As she opened her eyes and took in her surroundings a feeling of terror ran through her weakened body. She knew exactly where she was. And she knew exactly what was about to happen to her...

When Ella Tate stumbles into Black Rock Falls, her exhausted and bloodied body is a terrifying sight, but not as frightening as the story she has to tell. Ambushed on their way into town when they stopped to help a man by the side of the highway, Ella and her friend Sky ran when he pulled an ax on them. But only one of them got away.

As Detective Jenna Alton investigates the case, she looks into the history of missing persons in the town, and uncovers more cases - all young people. All stopped on the same stretch of highway into town. All vanished without a trace.

When a distinctive pink sweater belonging to Sky turns up in Black Rock Falls, Jenna follows the trail to a derelict building on the outskirts of town. But she isn't prepared for what lies behind those doors. Can she stop the killer before more lives are lost?

Where Angels Fear is the fifth installment of the Kane and Alton series of suspense thrillers by author D.K. Hood. Although the plot is one that moves quickly and held my interest, the writing is at times clunky, sentence constructions are often awkward and much of the dialogue is unrealistic and cliche. These shortcomings distracted me from the reading and removed me from the story far too often to overlook.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane, both living under assumed identities provided them by the government, work to discover the truth behind several missing teenagers. The cases share similarities that are disturbing, and all signs point to a serial killer on the loose in Black Rock Falls, Montana. The investigation unfolds as clues lead Alton and Kane to derelict locations in pursuit of unsavory characters who fall under suspicion. As the tension mounts, the pair close in and the truth of what’s happening in Black Rock Falls is finally revealed.

As mentioned, the story does move quickly from scene to scene, though tossing red herrings like scattered bird shot. Alton develops theory after theory, and shares them with the authority of someone who is convinced she is right. She just wasn’t a very likable character, and in fact some of her dialogue is flat out cringe-worthy. When carrying out interrogations she jumps to conclusions and behaves in a way that calls to mind the cliched cartoon detective—the one who points a finger and yells “AHA!” when he is convinced he has outwitted a suspect. It’s like a demented game of Clue in which someone occasionally ventures an overly enthusiastic guess—“Colonel Mustard in the library with a wrench!”

There were other areas of weakness here as well. Although set in the US state of Montana, Where Angels Fear has a distinctly British under current that is disconcerting. Characters go “to hospital”, a firing is called being “struck off” and a furnace becomes a “boiler”. Other word choices are, while not particularly British, equally as confusing. Pickup trucks are referred to as “rigs”, a grassy road is called a “two track” and the words “gape” and “maw” are put to use more than one time too many. Finally, problematic sentence constructions made the writing feel unpolished and clumsy (“The warm air from the heater permeated through her clothes, she was so sleepy”).

In the end, though a great plot, due to the issues raised above, this was simply not my cuppa tea.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Only in Black Rock Falls will you find a Sheriff who is an ex-DEA Agent in witness protection with a new name and a new face, a Deputy who was a sniper and member of the Special Forces Investigation Command and another who is also the ME.

Called to investigate when a young woman appears out of nowhere ... bloodied and half-frozen, she tells a story that has the Sheriff and her Deputies reeling. She tells them that she and her friend stopped along the highway to help a disabled driver when the man wielded what looked like an ax. Her friend did not get away ... and now she's missing.

Detective Jenna Alton does a little research and finds there have been many cases of missing persons ... all young people .... all stopped at the same place on the highway ... all who have never been seen since.

The detectives' investigation will lead them to a horrific discovery.

WHERE ANGELS FEAR can be read as part of the series or easily as a standalone. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Not only is it a fascinating story on how the three main characters came together, but their story is woven through an action-packed page-turner. I especially enjoy how the characters relate to each other ... with caring, respect, humor and sometimes a little sarcasm ... but it's the way they go about solving crime in their little town that sets them apart.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I received a free e-copy of Where Angels Fear Where Angels Fear, the fifth novel of this series.

This is the first book I have read of this series and I had no problem keeping up with what was happening. I would, however, like to go back from the beginning and read them all as it was a wonderful mystery.

Ella Tate is found on the highway, and she says he was attacked by a man with an axe. Ella also said that man killed her friend Sky. Sky, however is nowhere to be found. Sheriff Jenna Alton starts an investigation and soon discovers several other mysterious disappearances. Where are these missing people and why isn't there any evidence?

An exciting mystery that packs a punch.

Detectives Kane & Alton Book 5.

When Ella Tate stumbles into Black Rock Falls, her exhausted and bloodied body is a terrifying sight, but not as frightening as the story she has to tell. Ella and her friend Sky were travelling by car when they see another motorist standing by their car, waving them down. But the man pulls an axe on them. Ella manages to escape. Kane and Alton are now investigating Sky's disappearance and they also look into the history of missing people from the town. They discover that they had one thing in common - they were all young.

I really like this police procedural series. With its fast pace and curve balls flung at you from all directions, it's hard to put the book down. I just had to find out why these youngsters had disappeared without trace. The book is well written and plenty of though has went into the plot. I did not guess anything in the story line. I had no idea why the young people had been taken until it was revealed. This book could be read as a standalone but you will be missing out on a good series if you don't read them all in order.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author D. K. Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Where Angels Fear is the fifth book in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in beautiful, brutal Black Rock Falls, Montana. I'm a big fan of Ms Hood's novels, but I can't help feeling disappointed with this one. There are too many characters which leads to a lack of depth in terms of their development, and although the writing is as engaging as ever the plot left a lot to be desired. I figured out early on what was happening and who the perpetrator was and felt there were too many hints and clues pointing to that person that anyone with a decent level of intelligence will work it out quite rapidly. Of course, this does spoil the enjoyment but not enough to make me quit reading it.

There are some wonderful descriptions of the area and the snowy weather, and it moves at a fast pace for the majority of the story, but at times it dragged a little, sadly. Both Kane and Alton are tenacious investigators who form an intelligent partnership and are admirable in their stubbornness to achieve justice for the victims. There is still a spark between them, and I look forward to future books to see how their relationship evolves.

Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

4.5 stars. OK that was more like it - a very dark, disturbing and suspenseful book. I really wouldn't want to live in Black Rock Falls. For a smallish town it sure has a lot of murders and other nefarious goings on. This time it seems that people are running off the road or being run off the road and then disappearing. Sometimes their cars are disappeared too. The victims are always young (late teens to early twenties) but they are not all women. A couple of men have disappeared too. This all has the police chief, Jenna Alton, and her deputies stumped.

The police are suspicious of a wrecking yard and think some of the cars may have ended up in the crusher, maybe even with bodies inside. But what would be the motive for that? And any evidence is scarce. There is also a rather creepy doctor new in town but again, nothing to back up suspicions. It is only when a couple of residents finally come forward with some new information that things start to fall into place. And Rowley, the friendly and very promising young deputy, goes off to check something out. Could this be the last thing he ever does? The truth of the disappearances, when it is finally revealed, is worse than anyone could have imagined.

This book was dark and menacing. From the POV of a couple of captives you get a sense of what is really going on and it is cringeworthy. I just couldn't give it five stars because Hood's plots are always a bit OTT I think although this has been the best to date.

I would not want to live in Black Rock Falls... so many murders in the one small town! It's a good thing the police in town are on the ball. I love this series and it shows no signs no of letting up. The characters are great and I love how we learn so much more about them as the story goes. The book can be read as a stand alone but you really should get into this series if you haven't already.

Black Rock Falls is cold in winter, not just cold but super super feeezing with hideous amounts of snow. Nobody would visit there this time of year unless they had to. But Ella and Sky are travelling there to spend Christmas with Sky's family. They stop to help a man on the side of the road and he attacks them with an axe. Sky is taken and Ella escapes, finally finding her way to Black Rock Falls. Alton and Kane are on the case, even though they are not feeling the best. As they investigate they discover that they are not the first young people to disappear from this stretch of highway. Can they find tho so man before more people are hurt. While all of this is happening Jenna is worried that her cover may have been blown.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased

Ella and Sky are travelling through Black Rock Falls when she and her friend stopped along the highway to help man who then attacked them with an axe. Ella manages to escape but her friend is not that lucky. Sheriff Alton and Kane are on the case despite being under the weather and soon to their horror realize that there have been many cases of missing young people at the same place on the highway who have never been seen since.

Where Angels Fear by D.K.Hood is the 5th book in the Alton Kane the series but can be easily read as a standalone though I would highly recommend starting at the very beginning to know more about the characters and the circumstances that brought them all together . Ovearall a fast-paced plot with well-developed characters that does not let up makes it an entertaining read

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

And Ms Hood has knocked it out of the park again with this latest instalment. Where I thought the last book was dark and twisty and my god it was, this one was darker! She wasn’t lying when she updated her statuses to say it was darker than before! Reading this book, and other crime books I don’t think I can ever do a good deed for anyone ever again, so don’t ask me! I want to survive!!

It was great to be back with Alton and Kane, I will admit after the last book I’ve been worried about my #bookcrush David Kane, how would he be now? Does he have his memories? Where does it all leave him and Alton? Aaah so many questions needing an answer but no someone has to start killing people and interrupting rude much!!

With every book I read of this series, just gets stronger and stronger. The backdrop of Black Rock Falls is still somewhere I would love to visit but….maybe not in serial killer season because you know that is a thing!!

I have not been this on edge by a book in such a long time, with the days of the weeks leading the chapters, how much detail for one day! Dr Weaver had me panicking, Sky the missing girl had me gritting my teeth with fear, and the killer well I was would love to read it under the duvet and hope I’m never found. Where Angels Fear is relentless and does not let go of you. Its drives such a cold twisted hachette through you, leaving you gasping for breath as you turn the page as you know not everyone will make it out alive.

Like with all my reviews I won’t rehash the plot or talk about the blurb, what you need to know is I am ABSOLUTELY BLOODY LOVED IT!!! You need to read this series and when you do you will meet one of the most amazing families in a Police department. They’ve come a long way since book one and soldiers have fallen but they are strong and they have each other. If this book series is not on your radar why not, seriously go and change that straight away, go on what are you waiting for, if you need an invitation here it is!!! Now GO!

D.K. Hood shows her versatility with storytelling, a sure way to capture the reader’s attention. The story in this novel shows solid development of the larger themes in the series, as well as constant action. After a young woman stumbles into Black Rock Falls, she has a horrible tale to share. An axe-wielding man captured another young traveller in the middle of a blizzard. Now, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team will have to follow the leads, as more reports of abductions and missing vehicles come to light. All the while, Jenna has her own personal issues connected to a past she hoped would stay hidden forever. A great addition to the series that shows Hood’s superior abilities.

Ella Tate arrives in Black Rock Falls, bloodied and broken, with a story to share. While travelling on a stretch of highway just out of town, she and her friend were ambushed by a man with an axe, who dragged Sky away. Ella barely escaped and has come for help, though the raging blizzard has left any trace of the crime buried under the snow.

Once Sheriff Jenna Alton learns of the case, she rushes out to investigate, only to discover that the list of missing persons around Black Rock Falls includes many young people who have disappeared along this stretch of road, missing without a trace. Is there a serial killer out there, waiting and hunting when people stop along the highway?

After Sky’s sweater turns up in town, Sheriff Alton realises that she has a killer in plain sight, which leads her out to a building on the outskirts of town. Bringing Deputy Dave Kane with her, they uncover something as horrible as Ella’s original story. While they are both trying to put their lives back together, the case leaves them grasping at straws to keep their personal lives together. Black Rock Falls is about to be shaken by this case, with little hope of recovering. D.K. Hood keeps the reader on edge throughout this piece, a stellar addition to the series.

D.K. Hood never fails to impress and this book continues to pull me in with its steady pace. Great narrative description and detailed development of the story arcs keep the reader front and centre with this piece. Hood builds on some momentum from last novels and adds some new flavouring and develops some of the core elements of a police procedural in a small town. The series, while still new, has taken on exciting twists and turns, with Hood always spicing things up for the attentive reader.

Character development continues, as there were some moments that both protagonists needed to reflect on their pasts as well as their connection to one another. Alton has to explore her life in hiding, while Kane tries to piece together his memory loss and everything he left behind before arriving in Black Rock Falls. This development, as well as the introduction of new ‘one off’ characters is sure to provide a strong foundation for series growth that the reader can enjoy,

There are some great plot points that develop in this piece, bridging some of the earlier novels to what is sure to be an exciting new era in Black Rock Falls. Hood spins wonderful twists to keep readers focussed on the novels, while also leaving some threads dangling for ‘what if’ moments to entice series fans. Comments continue about how Alton and Kane’s time in town have surely brought many serial killers and criminals out of the woodwork, but Hood always has something to keep things exciting, even if small Montana communities seem to be getting much of the bloodshed. I am eager to see how the series will keep growing, as Hood does not seem to be stopping her writing in this series. I am hooked and cannot wait for more Kane and Alton!

Kudos, Madam Hood, for winning me over with this series.

Where Angels Fear by D. K. Hood is the 5th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books):
Sheriff Jenna Alton is the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. She is new to being Jenna Alton. She has a new name, and a new ID, because her past is still out there. She’s former DEA. Deputy David Kane also has a new name and new ID. Similar reasons. He’s a former Special Forces sharpshooter with exceptional profiling skills. He lost his wife in a bombing, that left him with a plate in his head, and bad headaches. Forensic Scientist Shane Wolf is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:
David Kane is still recovering from a tumble into the canyon last fall which shattered his knee, and necessitated a replacement plate be put in his head. Although he can walk again, the new plate is causing him intense pain in this cold weather, and messing with his memories. The death of his wife seems like it happened yesterday, and he is grieving all over again. His memories of that time are fresher than they ever were.

It seems Jenna’s past may also be rearing its head.

Ella Tate is found on the side of the road by a trucker. She is covered with blood, and insists that her friend Sky was murdered by a big man with an ax when they stopped to help a stranded motorist. There is no body, and no car, and no evidence. Although they take Ella’s story with a grain of salt, the blood she is covered in does give credence to her tale. Soon it becomes evident that Sky was not the first nor the last to go missing… and Black Rock Falls has another monster on the loose.

The weather is not co-operating either. Non-stop blizzards are interfering with both their search efforts, and their evidence collection.

My Opinions:
First, this is not meant to be a stand-alone novel, so read the other four before this one!

It was interesting to see the regrets that both Kane and Alton have for their past lives. It shows that the author is still developing her characters when we learn more of their back-stories. I also liked the “family” theme developing.

This was a fast paced, action-filled book. The plot was really interesting, with more than enough “bad guys”.

The books continue to improve as the series moves forward, and again, Jenna’s character is getting stronger.

Definitely enjoyed it.

4 and 1 / 2 stars

Ella Tate manages to escape a murderer, but her friend Sky was captured. Is she alive? Her car and belongings have disappeared. The responding police cannot find any evidence of the abduction in the snowstorm that has blanked the small Montana town.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner Deputy David Kane have a new mystery on their hands. Jenna’s past comes back with a vengeance and Kane is still recovering from the gunshot wound to his leg.

The team which consists of several loyal deputies and support staff begin to investigate the case. Ella recalls a little more about the abductor. Jenna has a shocking realization that several persons have gone missing in the area. They all disappeared in the same place, or nearly so, that Ella’s friend went missing. How did no one ever notice? Through a patient and exhaustive investigation, Jenna, Kane and the team track the killer to an old abandoned building.

This is a fast moving thrill ride of a book. This book is extremely well written and plotted, as are all of Ms. Hood’s novels. I really like Jenna and Kane, and the rest of the team as well. They are smart, savvy and dedicated detectives. They make a great team and get along very well. Their personalities complement one another well. I enjoy Ms. Hood’s novels and look very much forward to reading the next in this series.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.

It's almost Christmas and the low temperatures and snow have hit Black Rock Falls, MT, with a vengeance. College kids are returning home for the holidays. In fact, Sky Paul and her roommate, Ella Tate, are on their way to Sky's house for a family celebration. But, their happy plans are shattered when Sky stops to help a stranded motorist on the side of the highway. Bad idea. Ella spends the night sheltering high up in a pine tree to escape the man wielding the ax and soon Detectives Kane and Alton are investigating the case. Soon other young people go missing apparently from that same stretch of lonely dark road and Kane and Alton realize that these abductions are part of a larger and more complex crime. NO SPOILERS.

This is the 5th in series and I can't imagine not having read the previous 4 -- I don't feel that you could read as a standalone as there were a lot of changes due to events that happened in the other books. I felt that this one was almost a complete step backwards in the relationship situation between Kane and Alton and I really wasn't all that thrilled with dredging back up their past as previous government agents, etc. I don't care if they have a romance or not, in fact I wish they wouldn't, but it's such a cliche in this type of novel that I grin and bear it. Definitely the reader will find the setting and atmosphere of Montana in the winter well-described.

I found a few little oddities in the actual writing of this novel that is set in USA. Some of the vocabulary and phrases used were more British than American and that was a bit jarring. There were tons of characters and the author dangles red herrings freely and it seemed that not much mention was made of poor Sky after all and the whole reaction of her family to the situation. Also don't think even the most stupid college-aged person would do what Doug and Ella did. I thought there were some loose ends that never got tidied up.

So, this was a little disappointing as I have previously really enjoyed the series and I can't put my finger on exactly what felt off. This didn't have as much suspense or thrills as I'd hoped so I hope it will be back on track with the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Book 5 in the series and my 3rd one. It would be impossible to say which one is my fafvourite, because they are all gems.

I love the way the author has invented such interesting and intriguiing past for some of the police officers. It gives them an extra bit of spice.

Of course people are attracted to series due to their feelings towards the returning characters, but that is not enough. People also want stories filled with suspense and other emotions. Needless to say that this author knows perfectly how to combine all those things and mixes them into a tasty cocktail.

I had chills running down my spine and my stomach sometimes felt like it had gone through a shredder. The interaction between the team members certainly increases the reading pleasure.

At a given moment I had a lump in my throat and I liked the jokey tone at the end of the story.

The author left me no choice. I just had to dip into my pocket and pull the 5 stars card out of it.

Thank you, DK Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Where Angels Fear, the fifth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of the Black Waters Fall, Montana Sheriff’s Department.

When Ella Tate is found on the highway she claims to have been attacked by a man wielding an axe and that he killed her friend Sky but with no sign of Sky or her car the team don’t know what to think. Giving Ella the benefit of the doubt Jenna investigates further and finds several mysterious disappearances.

I enjoyed Where Angels Fear which is a good adventure with plenty of thrills. I hesitate to call it a mystery because the narrative is split between the investigation and the perpetrator’s actions giving the reader a good idea of what’s going on. I also guessed the identity of the perpetrator about half way through the book from the way he talks and other hints. To be honest I think that the reader is given too much information so it makes the investigation’s theorising rather redundant. The format may not be quite right but the rest is good. The action pieces are exciting, the descriptions of the snowy conditions are atmospheric and there is finally an explanation for three over qualified operators finding themselves thrown together in a Montana backwater. No mention, however, of why so many serial killers end up in said location.

I like the characters of Alton and Kane as they are smart, resourceful and commendable in their commitment to justice. As usual their relationship teeters on the edge of romance but with so much baggage who knows what will happen as they become closer. It will be interesting to see where Ms Hood takes them.

Where Angels Fear is not the best novel in the series but is still a good read. 3.5*

"It seemed each new season in Black Rock Falls brought with it a new brand of twisted psychopath."
I'm back in Black Rock Falls and a similar scene as when I started this journey in Don't Tell A Soul. It's snow covered and treacherous driving conditions so it's no wonder Sky wanted to help a fellow driver stranded in the snow.  What ensued was super sinister in just the way I've come to love D. K. Hood's tales from the Montana county. Where has Sky vanished to?!?
I loved the switch in perspective between the Black Rock Falls sheriff team, our nutter on the loose and the victims, helpless in their plight. As I read Sky's experience, I felt goose bumps creep up my arms from my kindle, spreading through out my body and I don't think I shook them until the seriously tense ending to the book. There were so many chapters I came out of realising I'd been holding my breath!
I can’t figure why you would risk driving to Black Rock Falls in the middle of the night.” ...“Are you aware of how many murders occurred in this county in the last couple of years?..."
That wasn't the only time I "saw " Ms Hood's wicked sense of humour worm it's way into the tale. Despite its dark sentiment, there is a slight comic nod in the characters' narrative. Before Kane and Alton arrived in Black Rack Falls, this was a sleepy town off the radar.....
Where Angels Fear is another cracking crime thriller from the mind of Ms Hood and I loved it. This series despite each book being effectively a stand-alone story keeps getting better and better and I for one cannot wait for book 6.

Another fantastic book in the Kane and Alton series.
This is a heart stopping book which will grab you from the first few pages.
A girl arrives in Black Rock Falls covered in blood and explains that her friend had been attacked on the roadside.
There’s no sign of Sky and no sign of her car, so is Ella telling the truth?
As Detective Alton investigates the case, she looks into the history of missing persons in the town, and uncovers more cases - all young people. All vanished without a trace.
We get an insight into the killer’s mind and it’s not pleasant as his sick plans come to light.
There’s a real race against time at the end and it had me storming through the pages to find out the ending.
This book can be read as a stand alone book but this is such a great series, I recommend you read the previous books too!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Thanks Netgalley, Bookouture, and author D.K. Hood for an ARC of this amazing novel.

This is the 5th book in the series, and having devoured the previous titles I couldn't wait to start reading this one.

Wow gripping suspenseful crime thriller with lots of surprises, twists and turns. The pace is perfect, the characters are real and engaging, and the build up for the end is exciting and unpredictable.

I highly recommend this book and the entire series to all fans of high quality crime thrillers.

Number 5 in the series and with each addition it gets better and better. I read this in one day and broke my own rule of leaving the book I was reading to start this as soon as I got it, Harrowing opening that grips you from the first line. Brilliant plot that’s keeps you guessing and fantastic development of the characters and plots in the sub plot. The main plot is gruesome and unusual. The reasons for why the characters in the sub plots are where they are is very interesting and as we learn more gets even more interesting. I love the setting too and with each book feel like I’m revisiting a familiar place though Black Rock Falls has to be THE most dangerous town in the US.

This is book #5 in the Kane and Alton series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone, it does refer to previous books, so it would be advisable to read them in order.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and her Deputy Dave Kane are on the case of a teenage girl who was attacked on a snowy highway whilst helping a stranded motorist. She has now disappeared and when more teenagers disappear, it becomes apparent that the cases are all linked and that another serial killer may be on loose. Not only does the Sheriff not have any leads on the missing persons, she also finds her protected identity may be at risk when someone seems very keen to find out who she really is.

I have loved this series from the very first book, so I went against the order of my ‘To Be Read’ list and moved it right to the top! Jenna Alton and Dave Kane are the equivalent of Mulder and Scully, a fantastic crime fighting duo! Based in Black Rock Falls, a remote town in Montana, you would imagine they have a very quiet role there, but over the course of 5 books, they’ve encountered more serial killers than you can shake a stick at!

The location in this book sounds bleaker than it has throughout all the other books, being in the middle of winter and with LOTS of snow! We don’t tend to get snow like that here in the UK, so it was an eye opener to read how bad it gets and how much of a hindrance it is when you are looking for a killer!

Following on from the previous book’s storyline, Deputy Dave is still recovering from what happened and is still suffering the after effects, both physically and mentally. I was pleased to see though that he was still on the ball with his super sharp skills and protective streak where Sheriff Alton was concerned! Deputy Wolfe was also back in this book, but I am slightly disappointed that his character seems to have been pushed to the back slightly as I do like his character and it seems like he has so much more to give.

The story itself was fast paced and addictive! It was, in parts, a little bit gruesome, so be warned if the sight of blood makes you squeamish!! The possibility of Jenna’s identity being blow was great and I was really excited at this part of the story as we were given a few more snippets as to why Jenna was under the Witness Protection Scheme and what she had done in her past! We was also, thanks to Dave’s injuries in the previous book, given an insight into Dave’s life before Black Rock Falls.

The storyline twisted and turned, throwing red herrings out at every opportunity. There weren’t too many characters, so it was obvious to assume that it had to be one of them as the killer, but I couldn’t work out which one until the Sheriffs did!! This was a fantastic crime story with a great collection of characters who all add their own little ‘thing’ to the storyline!! I read this book so fast I’m sure there was smoke coming from the pages! It had me completely hooked and I just couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to see what happens in book number 6!!

Thank you to #NetGalley, the Publisher and DK Hood for the opportunity to read "Where Angels Fear" in return for an honest review. I have read the four previous installments of the Kane and Alton series, and greatly looked forward to this book.

Hail, hail, the gang's all here! The return of Jenna Alton, Dave Kane, Shane Wolfe (and children), along with Deputies Rowley and Webber was highly anticipated, and this new story was certainly worth the wait.

It starts off on a dark and snowy highway between Blackwater and Black Rock Falls, when two teenage girls stop with the intention of assisting a broken-down car and driver; with lightning speed, the assailant (presumably) kills one of the girls, and the other manages to escape into the night. Tired, frightened, and up a tree, Ella Tate waits for the morning and prays that she can find her friend and the car they were in - but to no avail.

Dave Kane is recuperating at home from the events of the previous case, and Jenna Alton is dealing with a cold, but they are hands-on from home as the investigation into the kidnapping and possible murder commences.

Although Ella is originally seen as the prime suspect, as neither Sky nor her car can be located, it unfolds that she was just very lucky to escape. Soon, though, while out searching for her friend - with Sky's brother Doug - they are attacked again! Ella wakes up in Doug's truck without the keys, and next to a wreck on the side of the road with a dead woman and a missing girl.

This entry in the Kane and Alton series moves along at breakneck speed as the Detectives try to discover what happened to Sky, Doug and - as it turns out - a number of other people who also disappeared on the road to Black Rock Falls; and as a result we are plunged into the realm of organ harvesting, and we meet one of the more heartless bad guys that Jenna and Dave have come up against.

The climax will leave you breathless (it did me!). All in all, this is a worthy addition to the series and highly recommended. Thank you, DK Hood!

Where Angels Fear by D.K. Hood
Detectives Kanae and Alton #5

Coming into this series on book five made me wish I had read the other four books before I started. I could easily follow the murder mystery portion of the book but really felt I would have enjoyed the story more if I had met and gotten to know the many characters throughout the previous books. I have a feeling Jenna Alton and David Kane’s backstories would add depth to their characters as would the feeling that they may have had the beginning of a romance in previous books. I found Shane Wolfe intriguing but in this book he was more of a supporting character. Jake Rowley and some of the other characters mentioned no doubt flesh out the stories – especially if you have read the first books in the series. So...will take that into account when I rate it.

The actual murderer was a creep and a half and the people assisting him hard to understand. The idea was not new but it was riveting to read the story as it unrolled. I had a feeling about one of the baddies early on...just as I was supposed to...but the mastermind took a bit longer to be revealed.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Maybe...especially if I can get my hands on earlier books
Do I recommend it? If you can find and read the books in order

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

"Where Angels Fear" is book 5 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K. Hood. Detectives Kane and Alton were both homesick when they caught a case of the attack on Ella Tate and her friend gone missing Sky. At first, Detectives Kane, Alton, and ME were unsure if Ella Tate was a victim or murderer. However, the more they investigated, the more they realised that Ella Tate highlighted that Black Rock had a serial killer. The readers of "Where Angels Fear" will follow the twists and turns in Detectives Kane and Alton's investigations to discover what happens.

I found Detectives Kane and Alton series by mistake, and I am so please that I did. "Where Angels Fear" is a fantastic addition to this excellent series, and I engaged with the characters and the plot from the first page. I love D. K. Hodd's portrayal of the characters of "Where Angels Fear" and how they intertwine throughout this book. "Where Angels Fear" is well written and researched by D. K. Hood. I like D. K. Hood description of the settings of "Where Angels Fear" that allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

"Where Angels Fear" readers will understand the consequences of illegal organ harvesting. Also, the readers of "Where Angels Fear" will learn about the importance of placing salt spreaders on roads in heavy snow areas.

I recommend this book.

This is the 5th Kane and Alton book and I still love the series as well as looking forward to a 6th installment. I read this in two sittings, and it would have been one had I not started it later on in the first day. The plot was one that I found interesting and the writing kept me engaged. There were a few small instances where I felt that things were a little clumsy or rushed, for the most part I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm still invested in the character development and look forward to learning more about the where the characters are headed and what's in store for them. Though I will say, Black Rock Falls sure is a magnet for the scum of the earth. I wonder who will lose it next...

Ella and her friend Sky is on their way home and stop to help a stranger on the side of the road who's car broke down (as young girls often do). Sky is attacked and kidnapped while Ella manages to escape and contact the local police.

Luckily in this small down the sheriff is an ex DEA agent in witness protection and she has a deputy who use to a Special Forces sniper.

This elite troupe start their investigation with the most cliche, clunky awkward dialogue I've read this year and in places so distracted from the story that I could not focus on the overall plot.

I stumbled onto this book 5 in the series without having read any of the others and it stood on it's own quite well. Still, I will not make the effort to read the earlier ones

Another great read even though it was a bit gruesome in places and the thing I like most about this author that it's never obvious until the end who is committing the crimes. I was given this to read in exchange for my honest opinion and I would like to thank the publishers and netgalley for letting me have the book to review.
