That was awesome! This one is mainly focused on the White Whale’s battle, Subaru continues to grow up as a person and matures a lot, he ends up being a hero in the eyes of many and gains access to some respect, the battle was impressive and the many characters are well developed, we learn a lot about the Sword Devil and Rem was lovely and got her reward, that past was quite different from the anime, and another love declaration gave me the creeps.

3.5/5.
It was a good novel, but since it was mostly a battle, it became a little bit boring for me.
Though, we see a big character development and we learn about the struggles that everybody has due the White Whale, the Witch of Jealousy and her Cult.

What I like the most about this novel was Crusch Karsten, since she is my favorite candidate to the royal selection along with Emilia.

And Rem is a cute character and I get why a lot of people prefer her over Emilia, but I don't like the fact that she is always like a dog seeking for Subaru's attention. I just hate that, specially in a woman.

I'm looking forward to the next novel.

Three and a half.

This volume was the "Moby Dick" episode of this series. Every series needs one. The protagonist intended to exploit an opportunity to eradicate the malignant, roaming, "Dwarf Fortress"-like legendary monster White "White Whale" Whaleson who had spent the last four hundred years, since some witch or another created it, flying around, crushing stuff and people, and spewing some mist that causes everything it touches to get erased from existence as if it never existed. Kind of a gigantic nuisance. In any case the protagonist, who as established goes back in time whenever he dies, had already crossed paths with this creature, and thanks to the mobile phone he had on him when he was snatched from Earth back in volume one, he knows the exact time when the monster is going to appear. He wants to temporally ally with other royal candidates, mainly with military gal Crusch Karsten.

Pictured: Crusch Karsten-sama as depicted on the anime adaptation.

Military lady wants to destroy the whale because of fame and goodness, and another businesswoman candidate wants to clear a main threat to merchants in general. The protagonist is using the fight against the White Whale as a stepping stone to get some allies in the fight against the Witch Cult that in previous runs murdered the people he appreciates (which precipitated the Apocalypse). And he does all this because his beloved half-devil is mad at him and won't be happy to see him unless he turns the world around for her sake.

Pictured: the sort of lackluster but pretty cute heroine, as depicted on the anime adaptation.

Although in a previous run the protagonist had made an ass of himself by entering the negotiations with only his "pig's greed" as a bargaining chip, now he's learned the lessons that dying over and over has given him. He knows what those people with power want and need, and he can manipulate them into doing his bidding. In any case, murdering the White Whale is best for everybody. When military lady agrees to slay the damn thing, a peripheral character who had briefly played the role of a father-like figure reveals that the protagonist has given him the opportunity to seek revenge that he had been anticipating for fourteen years: turns out that the old guy, a master swordsman, lost his beloved wife to that monster, and has been in a single-minded path of revenge ever since. The stage is set for some whale stuff at the site of a gigantic fantasy tree that dwarfs sequoias, and that even the people in this fantasy world aren't sure why it exists.

With the forces gathered there at night we have some nice moments between characters that believe might interact with each other for the last time. Some people who had taken the protagonist for a worthless fool previously now are partly on his side, and impressed that his plan of attack mainly consists on acting as bait (he smells like shit and the witch-related demon monsters are attracted to that) while the actually competent fighters destroy the creature. Rem, the demon maid who has already thrown her life away a few times to save the protagonist, whom she loves (although he is infatuated with someone else), further reduces her autonomy by claiming that she'd be fine being his second wife. Getting into harem territory. In any case, by the end of the corresponding episode in the adaptation we get a cool moment in which the cell phone alarm that signals the time when the whale appeared the during the previous run plays ominously, and the fighting begins. That whole scene is in this link.

The fighting forces include some mercenary band contracted by the businesswoman royal candidate. Most of them are half-beast people from another country. Most notorious amongst them are a family of tiny, ruthless Khajiits who blow shit up with sonic booms.

Don't uwu me you murderous freak.

A prominent mercenary is a six and a half foot tall, loud and friendly dog-man who also rides some dog-like thing into battle. Name's Ricardo.

Tipping toes into furrydom.

The fight against the whale is a mess in which little goes as planned. Although the beast is attracted to the protagonist's stench, its hide is far more resistant to attacks, whether physical or magical, than expected. Some characters get on the whale to cut it up, only to get thrown off and then get on again. When Old Man Wil, revengeancing his wife, cuts out one of the whale's eyes, it gets real mad and starts spewing erasing mist that kills like a third of the forces. They only know that they are missing some because each platoon was made of fifteen people, and now the numbers don't add up; the memories of the missing are gone as well. As the whale gets injured enough, the group discovers for the first time that the whale can divide itself into three, each with a third of the strength and resistance, but each can still kill people. The main whale stays back from the fight, hovering over the field, while the forces are distracted dealing with the lesser versions.

The protagonist figures that he needs to get close enough to the main whale in order to drive it berserk due to his stench, which will allow him to draw it to the ground so it can be murdered. Rem, the demon maid, produces an ice torpedo that the protagonist rides up to the top of the whale. For a protagonist who has struggled so hard, and died several times, to move forward by inches, there's a triumphant moment on top of the whale's horn in which he gets to taunt it. He throws himself off the whale while activating the witch's scent, and the beast follows him to its doom. While the protagonist gets to safety dragged by Rem's flail's chain, turns out that the forces had prepared to blow up the big ass tree in order for it to fall on the whale. No way they had the destructive power to destroy such a trunk, and it falling the right way was unlikely, but in a nonetheless cool moment the trunk crushes the whale's body. Although Old Man Wil gets to exert his revengeance, the main story gets interrupted by a longer than expected backstory for this secondary character, showing us how he met the wife and how that progressed. The anime adaptation did the right thing in distributing chunks of that backstory around instead of concentrating it right at the climax of a boss battle.

The backstory is a rather straightforward tale of a solitary tsundere who only wants to swing his sword and kill people with it, but comes across a sweet girl who loves flowers. As they meet during his training he discovers that he's eager to get to the training place to see the girl instead of to train, and as he's repeatedly asked why he's swinging the sword, for what he didn't have an answer, he figures that he does so to protect others. He becomes more of a softie, focusing on protecting his teammates during the battles instead of just berserking around cutting people in half, and during a battle in which he almost dies he meets the girl, who is also cutting people down but like a god of cutting people with swords, I guess. Turns out that she was actually the recipient of the blessing to be a sword god or some shit like that, that comes once a generation, and it had found her despite her having no murderous wishes and just wanting to live a tranquil domestic life tending to her garden. When they meet again he attacks her like a maniac, claiming the she shouldn't hold a sword given the kind of person she is, but she argues that now she understands that her gift allows her to protect those she cares about, and in any case she's the best at it. The then Young Man Wil disappears for a time, as he was training like a madman, and during a royal meeting that the girl attended, he broke in and attacked the girl. A god-like sword fight ensued that the girl ended up losing, and while holding a sharp end against her throat, he tells her to drop the sword and never pick it up again, that he would take her responsibility from now on, and that she should do what she actually wanted out of life while becoming his reason for swinging the sword. Naturally a tale about protecting the woman you love tugs at my male heartstrings. Unfortunately the guy fucking failed at his task (you had one job, Wil) as some years later somehow the whale ended up murdering his wife, and he became a man hellbent on revenge, which is also a story that tugs on my heartstrings. Was feeling like a puppet by that point.

In any case, the whale gets killed and they cut off its head. Everybody is surprised that they won. Military lady proclaims that she now respects the lousy protagonist, and hints at a harem development by stating something to the effect that "I'll look upon you favorably when the time comes to choose a mate". Old Man Wil asks to become part of the protagonist's retinue in thanks, and promises that he'll murder anyone the protagonist orders him to. As Rem, considerably injured, gets separated from the protagonist, he gathers a posse (consisting of military lady's healer slash trap cat boi, Old Man Wil, cheerfully murderous tiny cat girl and dog dude Ricardo, along with some other mostly filler people) to ambush the Witch Cult's leader and end this loop.

Good fun. The boss battle itself was confusing, but such a situation in real life would have been as well, and the author did a good job describing the chaos. Still, a boss battle for like three fourths of the volume felt a bit too long.

Neskutečně povedený díl. Hodně akce, boj s Bílou velrybou a v neposlední řadě i backstory mého milovaného Wilhelma. Kam se hrabou waifu jako Emilia. Wilhelm je nejlepší.

this volume of the REZero story is probably amongst my favourite of the lot now just from the level of detail in the story that is shown.

Hell we get the entire backstory of Wilhelm in this, we learn what he was before that flowerfield and what that scene was we're shown in the Anime and it REALLY does a disservice to his character to not include the full story.

We get the culmination of Subaru's fight against the White Whale that does things virtually perfectly, there's little in the action that isn't intense, that isn't fun and engaging, from the splitting to the way Tappei writes the fight on multiple fronts to how he describes the psychological attacks that the White Whale does, it's brilliant.

We get a fuller and more complete understanding of the relationship between Subaru and Crusch and more context for that conversation that's coming up in a future Volume that'll make me cry.

Everything about it is fun, it's not a hard read and it's got a spirited fun to it that hasn't been seen before in this series.

Now to the spoilers, don't click if you don't wanna read em.

Now, I'm reading Volume 8 rn and it's harder to get though, especially since I know that this is only PART of the fight with the Advocate of LOVE!
But I'm scared guys...that line's coming up in the next two volumes and I don't wanna read it again!

This volume gave me a glimpse as to how Tappei writes action. It's ok. Sometimes the spacial setting of the fight was hard to follow, but that could be blamed on the large scale of battle and translation issues. A writing issue I've noticed is the redundancy.

The book will say "Subaru's plan to make the White Whale chase his scent [...] was a splendid success" and a mere 2 sentences emphasize that "Subaru, drafter of the plan, saw the operation through."
This is an cherrypicked example, but throughout the book we get recaps of things that just happened. Like extensive chapters of defeating a foe, one of the paragraphs in the following chapter will be like "remember how we used xxx to slay xxx monster, terror of the deep?"
Vocabulary wise, keep an eye out for often the translatogr spams "rent asunder" or "antagonism."

Subaru is growing, but he's still an unlikeable character. I don't think its intentional either, the way Tappei glorifies how soldiers rallied "behind the weakest man on the battlefield.
Re:zero has dated sensibilities regarding young men and women, though I guess that comes with the whole Light Novel premise.

(-)

This volume focuses on the battle with the White Whale in excellent detail. Subaru puts his knowledge from the previous loops to good use here. It funny how he went from a zero in the previous loops to a hero in this loop.

There's an entire chapter with the background story of Wilhelm van Astrea, who plays a big part in the battle, and it was nice to read.

I found some parts a bit too long-winded especially the last chapter. But overal it was a good volume and I'm looking forward to the next one.

After watching and reading the novel and the tv series adaption. I got to say, Re: zero has got to be my best read novel of all time. Without a doubt, this novel has stolen the special spot I've placed Evangelion on. In this novel and the rest of them introduces a cast of characters that blew my mind away, although it wasn't something I've never seen before, but the way the story makes them interact with each other just blows my mind. This is my biased review on the current state of Re:zero 2020.

The end of the White Whale arc after the "start again from zero" scene is actually one of my least favorite parts of Re:Zero, mainly just because it doesn't really top any emotional highs and the fighting against the whale isn't all that interesting to me. Plus, since it settles down into a successful loop, we don't get to see more Subaru deaths until the next arc. Boring! I come here to watch people suffer. Old Man Wilhelm is good though.

I was astounded.

The conclusion drawn in this volume amazed me. I already knew the results because of the anime, however, being able to read about the conclusions drawn in Subaru's mind made it all the better. As always, my sincere gratitude to the author, illustrator, and translator.

It feels like this episode made some real plot progress. I particularly appreciate seeing Rem find a secure place in Subaru's heart. It's nice.

I feel like the prose is smoothing out a little. I'm not getting lost in dialogue logic gaps as much. The context clues as to who is speaking are becoming clearer. Or maybe I'm just getting used to the style.

I really wished I remembered how the previous volume ended, so the novel wasn't as much of a surprise. The Hunt for the great white whale is on Subruru, is gathering allies, favors together to get an army together to hunt one of the great beasts. Then the battle is joined

The fight scenes seemed a little disjointed, but overall pretty good. It will be interested to see what comes next.

Compared to the prior 3 volumes this one is not nearly as good but it was still a fun read. Some good character work is done still and it's a good read but it is the weakest part of the arc for me. 7.5/10
