In a hilarious and sweet xianxia romance set in Ancient China, Lu Zhao Yao went through life living ostentatiously in every way possible. She lived her entire demon life in a loud and brazen manner, reigning over legions of demons, and yet——just before she was about to retrieve the sword of the ancient demon king and rightfully claim her spot on the throne——she died.
In the most quiet and unobtrusive manner possible. How? By accident.
Mo Qing, one of her lowest ranking lackeys at that point in time, had killed her after he retrieved the demon sword and unintentionally unleashed the sword’s demonic aura onto the heavily injured Lu Zhao Yao.
Her quiet and untimely death, coupled with her firm belief that Mo Qing had sneakily betrayed her by lying in the shadows and waiting to strike the final blow and reap all the rewards, nurtured a heavy grievance within her. Lu Zhao Yao refused to head to the underworld and reincarnate, hanging around in the human world in her spirit form.
Lady Luck, however, had not completely abandoned her.
One fine day, a female disciple of the Immortal Sect (Zhi Yan) fought with her childhood friend and banged her head onto Lu Zhao Yao’s grave. To Lu Zhao Yao’s utmost delight, she was able to possess Zhi Yan’s body for short periods of time after this.
Thus began her journey to avenge her very own death by destroying Mo Qing——and, in the process, resume her rightful place as the King over all demon sects!
This is a story about the son of the demon king with eyes as beautiful as the starry sky; and the ruthless, invincible leader of the demon sect, ostentatious Lu Zhao Yao.
One day, the two clash over the powerful Wanjun sword... One dies. The other lives. While he rises from a wimp to a powerhouse, she fades into a ghost thirsting for her blood debt... When Lu Zhao Yao returns from the dead for revenge, everything about Mo Qing cries out demon lord except for his starry night-like eyes which are the same. Things play out too weirdly, leaving her dazed, and, oh yes, too dazzled. She starts to wonder, "Is sustaining one's identity worth it?" One of the few xianxia stories told from a demon's perspective; this cute romance replete with side-splitting misunderstandings, funny nicknames, has a well thought out happy ending.
I enjoyed this book but was quite frustrated by Zhao Yao's cluelessness. More on that later.
The story is told in first person by our MC, Lu Zhao Yao. In her life, she founded and lead the powerful demonic sect called Wan Lu Sect, and her name was known throughout the jianghu. Unfortunately, she died unexpectedly when attempting to retrieve the sword of the previous Demon King, when another Wan Lu sect member Mo Qing pulled out the sword and its powerful energy killed everyone nearby, including the MC. Since then, she's been hanging out near her grave in ghost form for a couple years since her death.
Through a random coincidence, her ghost form becomes visible to Zhi Yan, a cultivator from a celestial sect who stumbles upon her tombstone, and eventually they realize that LZY has the ability to temporarily occupy Zhi Yan's physical body at night. Thus begins Zhao Yao's quest to take revenge on Mo Qing for killing her and usurping her place as the rightful head of the Wan Lu Sect.
The summary sounds serious, but the book itself was quite hilarious to read because it's told from first person POV, and the MC has a very dramatic inner voice.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I quite enjoyed this entire book except for one thing: the MC's cluelessness. As the reader, it's super obvious that Mo Qing has guessed quite early on that part of Zhi Yan's time awake is spent as Zhao Yao. Their personalities and how they treat him is completely different, and consequently, we can see that he's completely indifferent to Zhi Yan during the day but shows a soft and gentle side of him to her at night, when it's Zhao Yao in charge of the body. However, for the longest time, the MC doesn't catch on and thinks that Mo Qing has really been seduced by Zhi Yan. Is she really that dense and clueless??
While the main focus of the book is on the romance, there's a basic mystery plotline as well. There are some weird things going on with the Jian Xin Celestial Sect, which is why Zhi Yan ran to the Wan Lu Sect for help in getting revenge for her dad, and slowly it's revealed why her dad was killed and who was behind it. It's nothing complicated but is interesting enough.
A lot of the story is also spent describing Zhao Yao exploring the ghost world and figuring out how she can get money and buy different ghost spells, etc. I enjoyed this part. It was hilarious watching her (as Zhi Yan) force random people in town to burn paper money offerings for Zhao Yao so that she has more money to spend in the ghost market. Or when she married some random fat scholar ghost so that his rich family can buy a spell for her to temporarily return to earth in her own body for 24 hours to take care of some matters. And then later when Mo Qing found out about her getting married and then widowed as a ghost, he got all jealous XP
I enjoyed this story and might try watching the drama soon just to see what it's like. I hope it's as funny as the book.
Some examples of the MC's humor:
When Zhao Yao finds out that Mo Qing turned the area at the base of the mountain into farmland:
A Demonic Sect should have the qualities of a Demonic Sect! There should be fire! Blood! Lava! Swords! It should be bursting with murderous aura! Anyone who gets near dies – It should have this kind of imposing and majestic manner!
What springtime abundance, full of life, what planting vegetables and grains, reaping great harvests – Are you the Earth God? Are you the God of Wealth?
We are a Demonic Sect! We eat devils and monsters for dinner!
---------------------
When Mo Qing realizes the MC has entered everyone else's dreams except his, he sounds so salty:
As I advanced forward with small steps, I frowned in distress and said, “You’re always busy with handling affairs, you don’t even rest a bit? Yesterday, you came to save me and the day before, you went out to fetch the sword; you at least have not slept in two days…”
The sound of Mo Qing’s voice was indifferent: “No bother. In my dream, no one makes an appearance anyways.”
---------------------
Like I said, the MC is so clueless about Mo Qing's feelings for her:
The corners of Mo Qing’s lips quirked up slightly: “I sent someone to tell her, Lu Zhao Yao is back.”
I was taken aback, gazing foolishly at Mo Qing: “When did… Lu Zhao Yao return?”
Mo Qing turned his head to look at me, his eyes holding a little bit of tenderness: “Didn’t you say, she planned to come back and get revenge on me?”
Yes, I had told him this before, but could it be that this matter was not a headache for him. Why was he so weird: “…Why do you even look so happy…” I murmured out loud.
“Because, except for her, everything else doesn’t matter.”
My heart leapt.
At this moment, I could only think that Mo Qing was using nefarious methods. How come every phrase that came out of his mouth was all such an unfathomable mystery that made a person’s… heart flutter.
He seemed to have thought of something rather amusing and said, “The dark guard who found Xu Zhi also sent back news. When Xu Zhi heard that Lu Zhao Yao came back to seek revenge on me, she was so happy that she jumped up and clapped her hands. Then she said that she’ll come back to kill me together with her.”
[Do not say this kind of matter so lightly and so cheerfully, alright?! If you are like this, then even I can actually raise my hand and hold the sword to pierce your heart! But I will also have no sense of victory either!]
I sought out the original book of this story because I really enjoyed the Chinese TV show, The Legends, that came out in 2019, but the ending was so disjointed (timeline was wonky) so I wanted clarification. Unfortunately, the English translation of this Chinese web novel was incomplete, and the last handful of chapters appears to have been translated by Google translate (or something else automated). At least that’s my guess for the hilarious garbage that made up the last handful of chapters. I still give the story three stars because it truly was unique and engaging, but even reading the last few chapters with my eyes half-crossed, stretching my imagination to the max and making tons of inferences from the TV show couldn’t make it anything but a true head scratcher. I’ll keep an eye on it in case they finish the human review on the translation.
Zhaoyao is a fun protagonist. She's confident and shameless. The story follows her pov and the whole story is told in a straightforward (idk a better word) tone that fits her personality. The dynamics between the characters are entertaining, however I felt like besides her and Mo Qing all the other characters lacked depth. I also felt like the story was slow during the time at Wan Lu sect and picked up pace toward the ending. The plot itself didn't really blow me away. There were some twists but nothing that really left me awe.
3.5 stars and I fairly enjoyed this. This is a het romance. First off, I actually preferred the English fan translation because in Chinese, the writing was awkward and simplistic. Anyway, this was an enjoyable read because the main character is really bold, shameless, unconventional and all that. She had a fun dynamic with the love interest too. I really like this author's main characters and I'm going to try one of her other books.
I read the chinese version of 招摇 online with 79 chapters and 2 extra chapters from 墨青's point of view, and I LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT!!!
It was hilarious to read about how osentatious 招摇 used to be in the past before she died and it was even more interesting to read about her thoughts about her life when she became a ghost. She was willing to pull so many tricks such as using 芷嫣's body to seduce 墨青! There were also a lot of cute moments between the two of them, especially once 墨青 realises that it is actually 招摇 who is trying to seduce him. 招摇's character development has been amazing, especially when she starts to realise that maybe there was a misunderstanding between her and 墨青, which led to her death.
Most of all, arghh 墨青 is so cute and so sweet! He may have become the head of the Slaughter sect, but there is still a part of him who is still the old 小丑八怪 who was saved by 招摇. It was so sweet to read about how much of an impact 招摇 had on his life from his POV chapters. The best thing of all? Reading that he has always been grateful to 招摇 since they met that day. Also, the plot twist regarding his actual identity was very unexpected. I never thought that there was another reason the demon king decided to seal 墨青 inside the cave. Thinking back, there were quite a few hints throughout the book, but they were rather subtle, which could have been why I missed them.
Lastly, I just want to thank the author so much for including two chapters from 墨青's point of view, because dang those chapters were so sweet. Also, this plot was so much better than the TV drama's plot, which kept focusing too much on the side characters. The drama had so many changes that left me feeling bored and uninterested. However, this novel focuses solely on 招摇's POV, so it was much more interesting.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This novel was actually a re-read, kind of, because when I started reading it years ago I had to stop midway because it wasn't completely translated. Now I thought about it some weeks ago and decided to check if it was finally complete s I could pick it up again. It's a story I really like, the writing is nothing too special, but the characters are so endearing with all their flaws and lovely shades along with the coolest attitude. It was highly entertaining and that's just what I wanted to end this 2025. It tells the story of a powerful demonic cultivator that's killed in a weird accident by the subordinate she saved years ago, because of the rage and anger she's unable to move on and when the chance presents itself on the form of a body she can posses she decides to come back to get her sweet revenge. Obviously nothing goes as she planned and things aren't as they seem at first. One of those darker cultivation novels I really enjoy with morally grey characters and lots of misunderstandings and fun. There's a nice touch of romance too and it's done quite decently, for a change.
I honestly dont know how to feel about this one. The plot is fairly refreshing but I dont care about the characters enough. Zhaoyao is a great protagonist for sure, I like that she's both very funny, and confident but other than her? The rest of the characters are pretty weak.
Probably will read rest of the chapters when the book is done being translated, though.
3.5 stars rounded up because Lu Zhao Yao was a fantastic (and hilarious) narrator.
I read the whole book but could only find an English language listing for part 1. The story is a wild and darkly funny ride. Zhao Yao is entertaining from beginning to end. Mo Qing is hot and invincible. I am off to watch the C-drama adaptation (The Legends).😂
