Rate this book
One must never underestimate the consequence of a simple kiss…

Tall, dark, and brooding, the Viscount of Barnet stole Jane Milton’s heart the day she saw him astride his black horse in the woods. With her three seemingly perfect younger sisters now married, Jane might finally have a chance to win him over. When she learns of his upcoming trip to Brighton, she grasps at an opportunity to be a companion to an elderly woman there, in order to follow—er—accompany Lord Barnet to the seaside town.

Mr. Philip Honeyfield has suffered the dreaded misfortune of inheriting a title. Ungainly and shy, how can he perform well in the eye of society? To navigate his new role, Philip seeks advice from an unlikely source. When he is smitten by his grandmother’s new companion, Miss Jane Milton, his advisor offers one final piece of counsel: he must kiss her at the upcoming ball.

But a moonlit kiss can be catastrophic when witnessed by a cunning mother, a marriage can be inconvenient when forced, and a woman’s heart can be difficult to win when it belongs to another. Can an unexpected love conquer Jane’s resentment and Philip’s regret? Or will that simple kiss turn out to be his greatest misfortune of all?

Well, I made it a chapter. And I was building up a head of steam for a really cutting rant and just got . . . tired. So let me just say that a 22 year-old girl who has pined for seven years after a guy she has actively avoided even talking to (including blighting her own prospects with other men) is just silly and I don't see why I should be asked to sympathize with her or see her as anything but rather formidably immature. And I'm going to skip her dreadfully obtuse parents, her improbable interactions with her brother, and the author-manipulated clumsiness.

This is a historical fiction book that provides a clean and wholesome romance. This installment features Miss Jane Milton, who has been in love with a neighbor, since she saw him astride his black horse in the woods seven years before. Sh becomes a companion for someone in Brighton in order to be near him when he announcing he will visit there for the season.

Mr. Philip Honeyfield is the son of Jane's companion and was smitten when they were introduced. However, he has not adjusted to his new societal title. He is awkward and not as striking as most title gentleman, so he goes to a charming gentleman to be mentored. Taking his advice lands Adam in hot water. Does fate have different plans for these two, or will they get what they have desired?

This book is able to stand on its own since none of the characters from the first installment were involved in the content at all. Step inside this book and enter this literary fiction journey with twists and turns before arriving at their perfect H.E.A

The story is built on a good premise, the characters came to life, and the conclusion was all you could hope for in a H.E.A. So based on these observations, I enjoyed the first and book of this series and look forward to reading the final book as well.

Just decided I was tired of it, so I stopped at 59%. The "inciting incident" mentioned in the blurb was halfway through the novel, after pages and pages of nonsense. It strikes me that perhaps there was just enough plot for a short story, and the rest is all fluff, which is not the type of romance I enjoy. I also wasn't a huge fan of the two main characters, especially the heroine, who struck me as rather idiotic. Also, the hero and heroine's interactions struck me as more cringey than cute, personally.

However, if you don't mind that the story in the blurb doesn't even start until halfway through the book, well, this may be for you. :P I just really wanted a cute arranged marriage romance - that was the premise that excited me!

This book took a long time to take off. At 50% I almost put it down. The end was good but could not save the book. The Heroine spent most of the book in love with someone else. It was just hard to get into. This author does show promise and I think I would like something else written by her.

Poor misguided Jane. She set her heart on a man who does not want to be caught. In a desperate attempt to get his attention she travels to Brighton to be a companion to a very delightful older lady. Sometimes when we put our hopes on one person, someone better comes along.

The better for Jane is Phillip. He is a treasure that is worth seeking. Fortunately, she didn't have to seek him out, he kind of fell in her lap. He is the grandson of the delightful lady she is helping out.

There were times that this book seemed to lag and times I wanted to smack Jane upside the head. Overall, I really enjoyed the story.

Who knew food fights could be so romantic 😍

Sometimes the sequel to a book falls short of the first in comparison. Well this was not the case. This book was even better than the first one. I loved loved it! Jane, suffering from low self esteem, has been a chicken to meet the one gentleman she has been pining for from a distance since a teen. Now that her family has determined it’s time for her to marry she realizes she has to take drastic action to get his attention. This leads her to follow him to Brighton. Enter Philip, newly minted Marquess of Seaford who immediately is drawn to Jane and all her red curly haired with freckles beauty.

I had the best time reading about this couple. The banter was witty and sassy at the same time. I highlighted sooo many passages that I enjoyed and I normally am not a highlighter. Jane was a strong female lead character that you couldn’t help but feel for. There was no pretenses or airs of superiority, just Philip and Jane and how they fell in love despite starting off on the wrong foot.

This was just a great overall book. Clean Regency Romance.

While I liked this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as some of this author's other books.

I don't know if it was just an earlier work of hers or if I am just starting to notice stuff more as I write more myself. One thing in particular that bugged me is she used certain words too frequently, making the reading of the story rather flat.

While I liked Philip, it kept saying he was shy, but I didn't really think he was shy at all. I found his awkwardness rather amusing, although there was one incident that was a little over the top. Jane I found a little too shallow for my liking. I always hate it when a descent guy falls obsessively in love with a girl just because she's beautiful and that was the case here. While Philip seemed to be a pretty respectable guy, Jane was just bleh.

After being a bit disappointed with the first offering of Ashtyn Newbold’s Brides of Brighton series, I was extremely pleased that I thoroughly enjoyed Marrying Miss Milton. It was a charming story with a fun premise that I inhaled in a single evening.

Jane has pined for her handsome neighbor for seven years, so when he travels to Brighton for the Season, she decides to follow. There she meets the newly minted Marquess of Seaford, who immediately becomes smitten with her and seeks to capture her interest, despite him not having the slightest idea of how to woo a lady. Unfortunately for him, Jane isn't interested. But when her attempts to make her crush jealous results in her finding herself in a compromising situation, she’s forced to marry Philip, who, despite her resentment, genuinely loves her and wants to make their relationship work.

Philip is the most endearing hero— sweet, happy, shy, genuine, and adorably awkward, the kind of hero I’d love to marry myself. While Jane starts off the story a bit selfish, self-absorbed, and naive, she experiences terrific character growth throughout the novel as her confidence increases and her relationship with Philip progresses.

The romance between these two characters develops at a satisfying pace, with a lot of delightful banter and adorable scenes as Jane discovers herself and what true love is, while Philip strives to be a good husband and to see the best in his new wife whom he adores. Watching this couple fall in love was a thoroughly delightful and cute journey. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Bluh. I did not like Jane. She's supposed to be the oldest but she acts about 12, complete with eye rolling and food fights.
When Jane was little (how old? It's never specified), she spots some guy riding past her outside and promptly decides she's in love with him. She then spends years actually avoiding this guy, then when she finally can't avoid him, she follows him to another city.
She meets another perfectly sweet man, but she hates him immediately because she wants this other random dude she knows nothing about. She then is forced to marry the sweet man due to her own stupid ideas, and spends fully half the novel being shitty to him and testing not to love him. Jane's a real winner!

Did not enjoy!

I didn’t like this book at all. In fact, I couldn’t finish reading it. I disliked Jane immensely. What Philip saw in her, I don’t know. She was spoiled, rude, and just obnoxious in my opinion.

I’ve really enjoyed reading Ashtyn Newbold’s books! I love that she’s writing these so quickly. It seems there is almost always a new one of hers to read and that makes me happy!

I loved Jane in this one. I didn’t love the way her family treated her as almost an afterthought. All of Jane’s younger sisters have made advantageous matches. But Jane is as yet unmarried. She fancies herself in love with Viscount Barnet. I loved the way she and her friend, Caroline, figure out a way for Jane to follow Lord Barnet to Brighton, as a companion to Caroline’s grandmother.

That’s where Jane meets Phillip. Phillip has just inherited the title of Marquess. I loved Jane and Phillip’s first meeting. Jane is besotted with Lord Barnet and wants nothing at all to do with Phillip. Jane’s mother has other ideas.

Jane’s mother happens to catch the two in what she said was a compromising situation at a ball. And insisted the couple be married. Of course, Jane wants nothing to do with that. Phillip is not dismayed with the situation.

I loved watching the two of them make things work in their forced marriage. They both grew and learned a lot. The situation ends up beautiful.

This one has so many fun characters from A Convenient Engagement that I was thrilled to get to see again. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

Super cute read with slow blossoming romance.
Jane doubted any man would ever love her. And with parents such as hers, I'm not surprised. However, when she's caught in a compromising situation, her controlling and cruel mother jumps at the chance to have her eldest daughter marry a marquis.
Phillip has literally stumbled into a fortune and the title marquis. Enchanted by his grandmother's new companion, Phillip is falling hard.
Now they find themselves trapped in a marriage neither of them expected. Very cute read! I have a lot of fun in Seaford!! This was full of emotional ups and downs. At times I wondered how old Jane really was but seeing her family life, I made allowances for some of her immature behavior.

We revisit Adam & Amelia from book 1 and even the rakish Ramsbury.

I ADORED this book! Philip and Jane’s relationship came across the pages as so genuine but also imperfect and I think that’s why I loved watching their journey unfold.

Ashtyn Newbold did a beautiful job with this book and weaving a beautiful storyline where you really get to know the characters well and cheer for them all the way to the end!

Jane is the oldest, and by all rights, should have been the first to marry, but instead was the last of all her sisters. Jane has an infatuation with the tall, dark, and brooding neighbor, and wants to marry him so she devises a plan to follow him. It isn’t until she is found in the music room with a man who is not the man that she wants that things go awry.

I really despised Jane’s character. She is supposed to be in her twenty’s and yet she acts like she’s sixteen. Soooo immature!! Philip is so sweet and kind that you can’t help but love him, he really deserved so much more than Jane. I spent a lot of the book wishing Jane would put on her big girl underwear and be a woman, but was sorely disappointed. Anyways, I did like the final scene with her throwing the snowballs at him.

Of Two Thoughts

I am of 2 thoughts about this book. First, I did not like Jane, the female lead. She is 21 but very immature and really rude. She totally thinks only of herself, lies and does not mind using others in a hurtful way to get what she desires. Just not a like able character. On the other hand, Philip is sweet but so unsure of himself. Throughout the story, he only wants to make Jane happy and for her to truly care for him. Why he would want such a ninny as Jane is beyond me.

SUMMARY
Jane has had a crush on her neighbor, Lord Barnet, since she was 15. Her younger, beautiful sisters are all married to peers, and her parents can focus on her. They invite Lord Barnet to dinner, he seems interested and then announces he's going to Brighton for fall and winter. Jane's crushed.

Philip is the new Marquess of Seaford, inherited through some convoluted line. His parents died when he was 14, he was raised by his grandmother, and he has a few cousins in Surrey. He doesn't know how to behave as a peer, gets advice from Lord Ramsbury.

Jane's best friend, Caroline, writes to her grandmother in Brighton, who agrees to have Jane be her companion for the season so she can pursue Lord Barnet.

Philip visits his grandmother, meets Miss Milton and her parents. He's intrigued by this shy, uncommonly pretty girl with the beautiful voice. Mrs Milton is intrigued by his title. Grandmother asks Jane to not trifle with Philip's heart.

EVALUATION
I love stories where one person is attracted to a quality of the other that the other thinks is heinous. In this story, Jane thinks her red curly hair is hideous; Philip loves it. Philip can't speak to women without sputtering like a niddicock; Jane loves his charm and ever-present smile. I also love watching two people become friends and fall in love without any huge drama.

RECOMMENDATION
I recommend this to any reader.

FAVORITE QUOTES
If lightning truly was the light of heaven, then each strike meant another glimpse at his parents.

“Write her a note, give her flowers, or invite her to accompany you to town. Do not pester her with endless apologies and flattery. You must show her that you can be trusted, that you care for her, and that you are her friend. You must come to know her. Come to know her interests, her strengths, her joys. Become her confidant and her friend before you fret about winning her heart.”

“That is why I love spring. Each year it’s as if the world is awakening from a terrible nightmare, a season of despair, brushing itself off and declaring that it will reclaim joy, avoid defeat, and begin anew. The flowers bloom and color is born again. The green grasses reappear as the snow melts, and the sky shines blue once more. The clouds part and reveal the sun—a light that was always there, but simply hiding, forgotten amid the winter storm.”

Early on I thought would not like this book. Jane's behavior felt rather selfish, especially in contrast to the genuineness of Phillip. I was actually feeling irritated at the thought of her getting a HEA despite her shallowness. However, as the story progressed, the author did a surprisingly good job in conveying Jane's insecurities as the result of her upbringing. That, along with her willingness to see where she was in the wrong, made her a much more likable character. Overall, a good continuation of the series with another endearing couple/romance.

Minor details that confused me: *Possible slight spoilers*

I loved it! I see some other reviewers don’t quite agree with me, but I liked this better than the first in the series.

It was refreshing to have a hero be shy, ungainly and kind of a dork. He was so unlike most other heroes that I just loved him and the uniqueness it created in this story.

Yes this girl was “in love” with someone else throughout this story but of course she didn’t really know this person and it was fun to watch her and Phillips relationship grow.

Other books by this author have been light on regency customs but I felt like this one was more true to the time period.

I can’t wait for Lord Ramsbury’s story!!

Clean romance.

3 1/2 stars! I thought the storyline was interesting and somewhat unique from other books that I have read. In one respect, I thought Phillip was endearing, but then I also thought he was second guessing himself too much. At first, I didn’t care much for Miss Milton, but she grew on me by the end of the book. Overall, it was an entertaining read!

This was such a fun and wholesome story. Two people with their insecurities and flaws realize that what they really need is each other. It was such a fun read (I read it in one sitting) and left me with that lovely warm and fuzzy feeling at the end. This is exactly what I was looking for in a short, regency romance.

Such a sweet romance. Philip Honeyfield was so endearing 🥰 I feel in love with him instantly. One of my favorite male leads of all time. Jane frustrated me a little at first cause she had only eyes for Lord Barnet even though Philip was being so sweet to her. Watching Jane and Philip fall in love was great and while the book is short, it is worth the read 😊
