When I retired as a primary school teacher I felt bereft and needed something to think about. I took a writing course, then several more and finally joined The Next Chapter writing group. In that group I wrote short stories and poems. You can read some of them in my website. We all attended a course called Write a book in a year, run by Jackie Buxton. My first book, Forced to Flee was the result and I have now written three more. I am currently working on my memoir.

I start my review by mentioning the Books Cover, as whilst this is very picturesque, it is not a cover that I would automatically be drawn to when searching for my next fantasy genre read. The jacket cover itself gives a well worn appearance in both its physical feel and presentation, which may not be attractive to some readers and affect their choice of reading. However it is for the above reasons that I purposefully reference this and say to prospective readers not to be discouraged, and overlook this little gem.

The writing that lies inside its pages is a sheer delight and will not disappoint. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed, The Pathway Back, a wonderful time travel urban fantasy adventure, I am sure that fans of such similar works such as, Author Barbara Erskine will particularly appreciate and enjoy the story telling too.

In this exciting tale the main protagonist, Jason Brownlow, slips into the past when he introduces a nautical artefact into his sea faring collection. Events continue to happen until he prevents a crime that happened 90 years ago, but at what consequence? And what happens when he chooses to use the artefact to his own benefit and right a wrong?

The plot moves forward at a good pace, although in some places the quick jump through the events and scenes I felt could be a little smoother in their transition. I also noticed the odd editorial/formatting errors mostly with the dialogue. These are minor points, which the author can easily address and in no way distracted me from the story itself or spoiled my reading pleasure. The characters are believable and easy for readers to relate to and the dialogue is credible.

I do recommend this book to fans of time travel & historical adventure reads and in consideration of all of the above we award an overall score of 4 stars.

A fascinating tale of time-travel linking different lives and families across the centuries and generations. The plot is cleverly interwoven, connecting each story in unexpected and surprising ways. Central to the plot is the sand timer, discovered by Jason in an auction. Not wanting to be a spoiler, I won’t say more, other than to recommend it as an excellent read, that will grip you to the end.

An action-packed time travel story that was fast-paced. I enjoyed the way the author pulled me back from past to present and back into the past again, leaving me desperate to know what happened next. Great story. Perhaps the sand timer is out there looking for its next companion to travel through time with.
