I don't have the entirety of this work, only the Continuations, which begin on page 80 with Clovis' marriage to Baldechildis. However, I will assert that is up to Wallace-Hadrill's usual standard of excellence, a clear and readable translation with useful and thorough notes, of an interesting and lively historical document.
Very little can be known of the 600’s AD in Europe beisdes this author’s compendium, thus making it quite valuable and unique.
It is a standard “chronology of the world” and ends in 642 AD - focusing especially on it’s own century before this date. It’s full text is being suppresed from us and only certain redactions of it are given here out to the public today, though they possess the full manuscripts - as the editors are quite proud in stating in this work.
In this, what we have of it, Fredegar brings one to an awareness of many interesting facts that otherwise would not be known:
1. Per early Christians at this time all the beings in the Old Testament until “Seth born of a woman” in Genesis were called “Creatures” before rather he says. That means “Adam,” “Eva,” “Cain,” and “Abel” symbolize four being periods before man form, the latter of which began with Seth. I once found this mentioned too in an early 1900’s protestant bible chronology as well, and of course Lady Hahn speaks of all this in great detail. But what religionist or evolutionist knows this now today in 2019? There seems to have been a degradation in thought in the past 100 years, almost none know of this in either camp, they have become so dense in ways of understanding each other and polarized against each other with misinformation and half truths.
2. The Huns and Avars are equivocated as being basically the same in this text though this is ignored by modern Historians who like to confuse themselves over this question. Also in this work he shows the Huns were using the Germans and Norse as, what the Huns, he said, called: “Belfulci” - which loosely means “War Fodder.” What he means by that is, he says, they would force them to kill other innocent people against their will as slaves so that these Huns might despoil those others all the better. All Eastern Europe lived in fear of this happening to them he shows. Yet you have modern writers like Howarth today praising the mind, spirit, methods and culture of the Huns to the skies. Such scholars are not in the least considered moral monsters for doing this though but themselves given all kinds of awards in Academia. Such ill informed and degraded consciousness and conscience exists today among moderns let it be noted here for future generations. Ammianus Marcellinus, an austere, bold and great Roman historian, revered by Nietzsche and myself, said the locus origination point for all wars in the world, especially against Rome and for the past millenia before him, all came out from these Huns globally. And Dexippus in the 250-350 AD era, calls them, in works of his we no longer have access to today either anymore but that I have read: Iuthungri. Many have shown these are the very Xiung Niu (“New Old One’s” and such title also means “white flesh eaters”) China’s annals abound in mention of and state as the principal reason they built the Great Wall. They state such peoples originated in a place above the Urals called Wermalont even as Adam of Brehmen states of the Huns origin place, those enemies who came in among the Goths he shows. I have found in Arran, the biographer of Alexander the Great, going back just a bit further now, that these Huns also were affiliated with the Easterlings (as “Issedones” Arran says means). Such latter ones came from the wilds of far northeastern Rutulia when it fell to them long ago Arran says.
3. Grail lorists in our day praise to the skies Merovingian Blood lines and there is something interesting about it all. But they are nothing compared to the Heruli Goth bloodline of kings mentioned by Theodoric in Cassiodorus’ letters. The Merovingians are very periphery of such. Even Charlemagne descended from these Merovingians the next century after this chronicle’s end says as much what I am saying here. And one sees just how cutthroat and bloody and deceptive many of them were in this chronicle. I won’t even go into how this one “witch,” as they called her in her day, brought about more unecessary blood shed than had ever been seen on earth till his time per this Fredegar, the chronicler. It feels like half the book is dedicated to her intrigues and how others tried to extricate their people’s from all this and couldn’t and died one group after another.
4. Records of certain “Saints” lives at this time are pretty interesting that are collected into this compendium of histories and chronicles here. Especially of note are some of the libraries they built if they can ever be located again and some books might still be intact.
5. I call this period the eso-tribalicide period for a reason. This is the last period it seems where ancient family line tribalism awoke again to their esoteric ancient wisdom teachings and here attempted to reconfigure and consolidate as some astrological zeitgeist seemed used to inspire all tribes at once long ago so to do periodically - and even moreso before here, at times. One sees this clearly reading Tristan and Isolde set near these times and when reading of the Shiites peregrinations, and Muhammed and his peoples before that, all around these times. Now today we live in a global melting pot village of all intermingled people’s and I don’t see this tumultous regrowth and polarization ever happening again as we head toward a very odd synergy quickly. So studying the last time it will have ever happened on earth - and maybe for quite some time going forward - is of some value for historians trying to understand how humans have been on earth over the different times. For maybe in the far future when the 6th house of man gets going with the new 6th World of Beings many archaic traditions have us lined up within their framework within to experience, something like family tribal formations might arise again as it did here long ago. This is probably thousands of years into the future but it seems noble to keep records of how man is for future posterity in case we on a larger scale are repeating in mechanical and less than conscious predictable destructive patterns over and over that we need to get out of and ride in more harmonic manners.
I have underlines all over his chronicle so I might one day add a few things to this and annotate it all better but here at least is a fairly thorough review of a book largely forgotten to time and of some interest.
