Stupendous read! Each story is a gem. With plots that are all different, some with magical elements and some without but each is a full blooded cozy regardless of how long it is. Plus each will keep you guessing until the end. Great variety of characters throughout and each a delightful. If you have read any of the author's before then you'll be pleased to add this to your read list. For any authors that are new to you this will make them new favourites. Absolutely terrific! !
Has no one EVER heard of a proofreader or editor - or friends and family for that matter? None of these stories were without multiple errors. I just don't get it! I'm beginning to wonder if the majority of indie authors really care about the quality of their work. None of these stories felt like they were up to par. I have read Constance Barker and Sonia Parrin before and I think they have done much better than the stories included in this set. Maybe it's the fact that most of these authors turn out longer books and the novella or short story put a bit of a cramp in their style. But the biggest disappointment of all was the story by Ani Gonzalez, called Mystery of the Holiday Cards. She managed to hit all three of my pet peeves - multiple typos and grammar errors, a rambling storyline and the biggest of all - a cliffhanger! Seriously? In a Christmas boxset? Unforgivable. I don't want potential readers to think all of the stories were a disappointment. A Murder in Rhyme by Kathryn Dionne was wonderful. It probably helped that it was the longest story included in the set so it gave Ms. Dionne more time to develop her storyline. It was well written with great characters, suspense, and plenty of red herrings. I was never 100% sure I had figured out who the perpetrator was, and it turns out I was wrong in my suspicions. (The sign of an excellent author in my opinion!) I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. Dionne's work to read. I realize that this is an inexpensive box set, but I still expected a quality product. To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
I picked up Mistletoe & Murder because it included a short story from a series I have been following. I was only familiar with the one author, but I'm always game to try new to me authors and maybe find a new author's writing to love. That definitely happened with this anthology.
Mistletoe & Murder boasts six short story/novelette length holiday cozy mystery stories. There is a range from settings to differing mystery styles. I enjoyed the sampling. While shorter stories can be a gamble because its tough to get a fully developed story with a short page count like this, I felt the authors did a good job of introducing the setting, characters, and situation well. I do like how the page length did get to the point quickly. It was also nice to be able to read a few, getting a full story in a short amount a time, in between activities during the busy holiday season. Oh, and the last one is full-length. Not that I minded.
I don't plan to remark on each book individually, but here is the list of titles for future reference: A Christmas Present by Abby Vandiver, Yuletide Murder by Sonia Parin, The Candy Cane Killer by Constance Barker, Christmas, Chaos & Second Chances by Zanna Mackenzie, The Mystery of the Holiday Cards by Ani Gonzalez, and Murder in Rhyme by Katherine Dionne.
As to the story, I hunted up this book to get, that was The Mystery of the Holiday Cards by Ani Gonzalez. I have recently read her Banshee Creek paranormal romances, then her Main Street Witches paranormal cozies, and then started her Dora Pendragon short stories. This was one of the Dora Stories.
So, all in all, this was a good choose and now I have some other authors to watch for when I'm in the mood for a cozy.
Oh my gosh !!! A possible death, mysterious old Christmas Cards, a Secret Santa Exchage, a Magical Shop whose artifacts have a mind of their own, a mystery to solve and the loveable inhabitants of Banshee Creek. Yep, this book has it ALL!! The storyline is fast, the characters are so real and the world building is absolutely Amazing. I love this story!!! Dora sure has her hands full with her shop and its Magical artifacts, now she must uncover the mystery surrounding the life or death of a young man whose ancestor is one of the town's famous ghosts and figure out what gift to give her Secret Santa!!! I was gifted an ARC of this story and am voluntarily reviewing it without any compensation. Now, Ms. Gonzalez... you have to write Seargent Atwells story !
Really worth your time! A good bunch of reads for any season. 1. Upstate NY, a tree farm that isn't, dogs, a sheriff who's really a politician. Abby L Vandiver. 2. Maine, a bridge collapse, an Inn, conscientious coppers. Sonia Parin. 3. Kentucky, murders, Christmas magic, surprised sheriff. Constance Barker. 4. England, International agents, locked room, surprises. Zanna Mackenzie. 5. Banshee Creek, Magical Curiosity Shoppe, Civil War ghost and his descendant. Ani Gonzalez. 6. Upstate NY, widow, old Victorian, dog, magical old book, missing artist. Kathryn Dionne. I've always felt that short stories are the hardest to write, but these authors did extremely well!
Dora is back and Banshee Creek is gearing up for Christmas. But she keeps getting visions of a young man lying in a pool of blood - not exactly festive! But she also has to try and figure out the perfect present for her secret santa nomination.
But a certain Civil War era ghost is causing a furore and his descendent seems intent on finding more family artefacts. Oh, and a certain hottie from PRoVE still makes Dora's heart go pitter patter.
Ani Gonzalez is one of my favorite authors. I love visiting Banshee Creek. This holiday group of short stories includes a Christmas magical visit to Dora and the Magical Curiosity Shoppe. I loved this cozy paranormal mystery.
I love the short stories especially at this time of yr. With everyone so busy its refreshing to be able to become engrossed in the stories and read straight thru to the end in one or two sittings. Also I love the way they all make you just feel good in the end
I just loved these stories. They were all so different and I enjoyed them all so much! I couldn't solve one of the cases , but want to read more of each of these fine author.
