Police/detective/crime/thriller/mystery (with romance) that’s basically a labyrinth full of plot twists, betrayals, and conspiracies. I was wondering why it was taking me forever to read this until I saw it’s going to be five volumes when published by Rosmei 😬

Characters
MC: Jiang Tiang: smart, aloof, lil bit of a mystery, I really just want to protect him at all costs
ML: Yan Xie: young, shameless, lil bit arrogant, “straight”, popular, rich, makes friends easily, charismatic

🚔Gripping with lots of plot and action
🚔Slow burn and mostly wholesome romance
🚔Cute banter/picking/quarreling
🚔Funny misunderstandings
🚔 A fujoshi that doesn’t interfere 🙌
🚔Older cast of characters (30 +)
🚔The extras are SO cute!!!

🔵The angst, suspense, and action in the last 25% made this book unputdownable
🔵As someone who doesn’t typically read this genre there were some parts of the story where I just lost interest but not often. I still loved the story.
🔵I was expecting not to like Yan Xie after reading a few reviews but I actually enjoyed his character except the “I’m a man! Are you a girl?” type comments. I feel like we can have good m/m stories without it being derogatory towards women. Really just over the misogyny we see in so many novels these days.

If you liked Silent Reading/Mo Du and In the Dark, you will love this!

4.5/5 🌟

I was at the edge of my seat almost the whole time reading this novel. I've never read a detective danmei with so much intense action in a while and reading this made me remember how much I loved this kind of genre.

I freaking loved Yan Xie and Jiang Ting so much. They have such opposite personalities but they complement each other very well. Yan Xie is an interesting character. He's not someone who can gain good impression at first meeting but the more I get to know him through his perspective, the more I love his character. His shamelessness is unparalleled and his smugness and arrogance is very entertaining to read. He's a male chauvinist and he's very self aware of it. He's the type of man who'll receive hate from most women in real life and maybe that's why he stayed single until he met Jiang Ting.

Jiang Ting, on the other hand, is the typical calm and composed character with an expressionless face most of the time. He's very intelligent but he's also a very unreliable character. Although my instinct often told me that he's doing things with a reason no matter how suspicious it is, my stress level reached its limit with his every action. He has a lot of secrets and it's very natural for readers to doubt him. He's actually very lucky to have a person like Yan Xie who chose to unconditionally believe and love him despite all the suspicions. But I also think that only Jiang Ting can handle Yan Xie.

The plot of this novel is very intricate. You can see clearly that the author really did her research well, with all the terms thrown in every cases. I also loved the author's humor that really made me laugh but when the ambiance shift, you can't help but focus really well with all the information. The fighting scenes are so intense and you can feel the adrenaline with all the life-and-death experiences. The angst in the last arc made my heart clench but it shows not just the intricacy of the plot, but also the development of the couple.

I highly recommend this for those who loved Mo Du, Criminal Psychology and SCI Mystery Series. So much case solving and plot story but also with a touch of romance.

4.5⭐️

The twists and turns. The ups and downs. The comedy and the second-hand embarrassment moments, but also the heartfelt and gut-wrenching scenes. And the last arc!!! It was so high in suspense and emotion, my poor heart could barely take it.

I have some reservations about the ML, though. The “straight man” Yan Xie and his chauvinistic values can be considered a characterization, and most of the time he’s okay—he can even be vulnerable and cute sometimes—but I’d prefer it if the author had toned down those things.

All the volumes were genius, and the extras were DELICIOUS, they literally had me giggling and kicking my feet.
All in all, this novel had me speechless, gasping and covering my mouth in shock with how good it is. This author has become one of my favourite of all time.

Probablemente.

I randomly started this book since translations were recently completed and it popped up when I was looking for a new book to read on Novel Updates, but I'm so glad I gave it a shot. It's a mystery novel where the MC's past is interwoven beautifully with the cases set in the current time, and there are plenty of twists to keep the reader captivated. Until the very end, you're on the edge of your seat reading through some pretty action-packed scenes and wondering who the good guys and bad guys are.

The MC here is Jiang Ting, former chief in the Gongzhou police department's anti-drug division. He's believed to be dead by the world after a drug bust gone wrong 3 years ago, and there are a lot of questions and doubts in that accident about how and why the drug traffickers knew where the police were going to be and Jiang Ting's role in all of that.

Fast forward a bit, and Jiang Ting finally woke up from a three year coma and is recovering at his friend's karaoke business in Jianning. It's there that a young man is found dead due to overdose of a new drug, and the local criminal investigation unit is brought in to investigate. That's how the ML, Yan Xie, is introduced, as he's the deputy chief of the team heading up the investigation.

The two of them work together to solve the case, and Yan Xie eventually realizes Jiang Ting's real identity as Gongzhou's former Captain Jiang who should be dead. Though he initially isn't sure whether to trust JT or not, it can't be denied that JT is a brilliant individual who can contribute greatly to solving the case, so the two keep working together on the next case as well.

After solving the immediate details of the first case, it's clear that there's more than meets the eye, especially since there are folks from JT's past that are involved. Our main characters don't get much of a respite before the next case comes along, which involves a 200 million ransom for a boy who hasn't even been kidnapped yet. This was probably my favorite case of the two, since there were some twists here that I didn't see coming. As YX and JT collaborate on this second case, that's when YX realizes his feelings for JT and makes his move by the end of the arc. And finally JT opens up to YX a little bit about his past and how the kidnappings are indeed related to him.

After the first two arcs, the rest of the story focuses on the police trying to take down the King of Spades and figuring out who his moles are within the police. Along the way, we learn the full story behind JT's relationship with him. At times it was a bit hard to follow since there are so many names and references to previous incidents, but there were some thrilling twists along the way and the reader is constantly kept guessing who is helping which side. I had trouble putting the book down and had a couple of late nights because I was so drawn into the story that I couldn't stop reading.

Would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good police thriller with an intricate storyline!

Happy wedding,” Yan Xie lowered his head and kissed Jiang Ting’s temple, then pressed it close to his ear and said with a smile, “Me too, my forever lover.”

~

this had one of my favourite plots in all danmeis I've read till now..it was so plot driven and interconnected, I felt like I was there solving it along.💗

Yan Xie and Jiang Ting now belong to my favourite danmei couples to exist, the intimacy, the sacrifices they did for each other, the pure love..the emotions, this couple had me on my toes, these two had the most intriguing relationship and the best getting together in any danmei I've read yet.

this danmei was of mystery/crime/thriller genre involving drug lords, murders, deaths, betrayals and a lot more.

(p.s- i couldn't stop falling in love with one person besides our main couple "Qin Chuan" 😭 ).

what a read! the plot dragged a little (only a bit) in between but soon it picked up pace really really well.
jiang ting is my baby who deserves all the love and cuddle yan xie's giving him..

(i thinking I'm also shipping han xiaomei & yang mei, they are cute lmaoooo)😭🤣

as for some littered misogynist comments, author should understand it was not necessary to pull down girls or women, so the only reason I won't give this a 5⭐

i finally finished this.... jesus...

this is a detective bl story and it's very well-loved in mainland china. i really enjoyed it at first but i had a lot of problems with this.

what i liked: this is set in modern times and i actually picked up a lot of chinese internet slang reading this, lol. mutual physical intimacy (a bit less dubcon than usual lol), desire, realistic ages (everyone's 30+) that correspond to their job ranks, the humor and the characterization (I thought Yanxie was going to annoy me but he was quite cute).

what i disliked: instalove (or more like instalust), the imposition of heterosexual dynamics onto an m/m couple so much so that i wonder if this author is fetishizing mlm, casually ignorant jokes and comments, the intense angst and almost excessively emotional scenes...

“I want to return victorious from the battlefield hand in hand with you—or die on the battlefield side by side with you. Don’t you understand Jiang Ting? Have I ever left you behind? Have I ever deliberately not told you the clues because the criminals were too vicious and the case was too complicated, or did I make you wait for me anxiously, sleepless, and unable to eat anything?!”

This was easily one of the most confusing books I've read. The sheer amount of plot twists, side characters and names made me dizzy 😵‍💫 For instance, Jiang Ting was also known as 'Consultant Lu' and there was literally another character called 'Chief Lu'. I know this might not sound that bad, but I have been ridiculously this year, only managing to read a couple chapters a day (it took me almost two weeks to read this book.) Even now, after fully reading it I can't remember most of the plot 😞 That being said, the characters and romance are genuinely some of my favourites (the extras are so adorable.) While I did get a bit bored around the middle, the ending was so good.

😭😭😭

This is literally my third favourite danmei (after Global Examination and Hui Tian.) Huai Shang is literally a goddess 😫

[incoherent screaming]

I LOVE YANJIANG SO MUCH. https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1iD4... (watch this after you've finished the book it's like so adorable.)

However, even with how much I liked this book, I'm not tempted to pick up the sequel since it's about different characters... however I am considering for the Yanjiang cameos!

P.S. The audio drama song (城市天空) is so good!

:D (help this review still makes no sense)

Breaking Through the Clouds, aka Poyun, is ne of the best crime thrillers I've read this year. The two main characters are really made for each other. Jiang Ting, a former commander in chief, now presumably dead, was in coma for 3 years. Upon awakening, he meets Yan Xie, Deputy Inspector of the Jian Ning City Crime Investigation Division, with whom he has to work on a case he invariably got mixed up in.

As the story unfolds, we get to learn more about Jang Ting's past, why he ended up in a coma, and why he is now trying to be anonymous, and why he now avoids meeting anyone from his past.

The sparks btw the two fly from the beginning, and you can easily see how drawn to each other are, like to moths to each other's flame.

The more they work together, the more dangerous their path becomes, especially when there is someone from Jian Ting's past who wants both of them dead.

The book is not fully translated, so I had to MTL the rest. Still very easy to understand.

I feel such an overwhelming sense of disappointment. Maybe this is on me because this was one of my most anticipated danmei reads and I went into it expecting myself to love it from the get-go––but I didn't.

Something I did enjoy and want to acknowledge is that the mystery aspect of this novel was well done and I found myself gasping at the appropriate moments when something was revealed. It is also very heavy in terms of topics and I thought the cases were handled in a mature way. Some of the storytelling was nonlinear which is always a favorite for me. I also really enjoyed Jiang Ting's character. He was someone to be suspicious of and as more things were revealed the more his character became morally gray. Of course as the main character he was redeemed in the end, but I do wish his character continued down that path and sided with the antagonist in the final chapters. His redemption also meant that he suffered minor (social) consequences which is one point of frustration for me.

I am a very nitpicky reader and over the 155 chapters I constantly found myself picking on little things I just did not enjoy. Some I identified right off the bat: the way Yan Xie rushed into the relationship (I HATE instalove); the blatant misogyny, more greatly amplified because it was the done by main lead; the heterosexual dynamics for a homosexual couple (it made my skin crawl when Jiang Ting was referred to as "wife" or "daughter-in-law"); and the casual racism/colorism/fatphobia. And yes while I am identifying these themes in this book, they are also quite rampant in danmei which is surely and steadily making me stray away from the genre. There were also some flaws with the plot which made me incredibly frustrated, like the fact that the author would make Jiang Ting have some great revelation that when following the plot does not really make sense. Then Huai Shang would scramble to make things up to make that revelation make sense. This made the plot feel superficial and as a plot-focused reader, I felt dissatisfied the entire time while reading.

I also really disliked Yan Xie, he is a typical rich-man with too much power in his hands. His treatment towards the women in this book was really upsetting to read and I did not like how he talked to Jiang Ting sometimes (again forcing heterosexual dynamics). The fact that he was a main character and the romantic interest of Jiang Ting meant I had to think about him more than I wanted to, perpetuating my further dislike for him.

Due to the complexity of the cases, the storytelling, some of the chemistry-related knowledge, and Jiang Ting (i am a big fan) I think this novel deserves a good rating, but I had so many qualms with characterization and plot that I cannot in good conscience give this book anything more than three stars.

Breaking Through the Clouds by Huai Shang is an exhilarating blend of crime, mystery, and romance that keeps you hooked from start to finish. If you love slow-burn relationships wrapped in a high-stakes plot, this novel delivers on all fronts.

The story follows Jiang Ting (MC-the shou), a former narcotics officer with a mysterious past, and Yan Xie (ML-the gong), a brash and charismatic police captain, as they team up to unravel a complex web of criminal activity. What starts as a reluctant partnership evolves into a deeply layered bond filled with tension, vulnerability, and eventual trust. The romance is slow-building but incredibly rewarding, with every shared moment between the MC and ML carrying emotional weight.

What makes this novel stand out is its seamless blend of genres. The police procedural elements are gripping, with intricate cases, unexpected twists, and detailed investigations that make you feel like you’re solving the mysteries alongside the characters. The writing is intelligent and immersive, keeping you on the edge of your seat as the plot unfolds.

At the same time, the characters are richly developed. The MC’s quiet resilience and haunted past contrast beautifully with the ML’s boldness and sense of justice. Their chemistry is undeniable, and watching their relationship develop—through misunderstandings, banter, and moments of raw vulnerability—is one of the highlights of the story.

Huai Shang also does a fantastic job of balancing the darker themes of crime and corruption with moments of levity and human connection. The supporting characters are memorable, the pacing is sharp, and the world-building immerses you in a gritty yet fascinating environment.

If you’re a fan of danmei novels with strong plots, complex characters, and a romance that feels earned, Breaking Through the Clouds is a must-read. It’s a thrilling ride from beginning to end, and it leaves you thinking about the characters long after the final chapter.

1) O Wen Shao/King of Spades é um psicopata mas CLARAMENTE era apaixonado pelo Jiang Ting, a obsessão dele com o JT não tem a ver apenas com o fato deles serem irmãos adotivos. Isso fica bem claro nos últimos capítulos quando o JT está em coma e sonha com as memórias dele;

2) O Yan Xie é taxado como um dos personagens mais misóginos/machistas do danmei e sinceramente considerando que dois dos vilões são mulheres eu não o julgo!! Além disso, ele trata absolutamente todo mundo igual sem distinção nenhuma de gênero então é mais fácil dizer que ele é um pé no saco maluco do c4ralho mesmo;
