From the very beginning, Quinn and Anna had something different; until Anna left without a word. Having moved on, finally getting her life back to a kind of normal after the loss of her father, Quinn’s world is turned upside down when Anna comes back.
From one moment to the next, everything can change. Everything can happen, or nothing. In every moment of her life, Quinn was never sure in which direction things would shift. But when it came to Anna, she thought she knew where they were going.
And then the one thing happens that Quinn could never have seen coming. Anna dies on duty, and Quinn goes into a spiral, looking for something to hold on to, while at the same time learning to let go.

“...A minute longer and Quinn probably would’ve fallen asleep, but the slight breeze that had been flowing in off the water had dropped and the heat of the sun grew quickly, biting into her skin.
‘Don’t fall asleep.’ Quinn whispered, stealing a kiss before Anna opened her eyes. The thin fabric of her shirt softened the sunlight to an airy white, tempering the brown of Anna’s eyes to an amber glow.
Quinn remembered a moment, on the day Anna had shown up on the boardwalk, a moment where she’d wished she could freeze time, and she found herself with that same thought now. Though maybe not to stop time, but to stay in this moment, in this place. Secret and hidden between leagues of ocean and land. All the time in the world. Nowhere in particular. And then she realised that she really didn’t know where they were. She hadn’t been paying attention; not for a long time.
‘Where are you?’ It seemed Anna had read her mind, more likely the distance in Quinn’s eyes.
‘Nowhere.’ Quinn blinked, bringing Anna back into focus, ‘Here….’ “

“…Quinn stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind her. She watched as little particles of dust danced and twirled between the lines of light, disappearing in the shadows and then reappearing, like a magic trick. Gone one moment, there the next…”

depressing

A long slow read, just to examine how truly awful people can be, and how we never really learn from our mistakes

I have loved everything of A.J.'s. Any review I might write would just say the same thing, over and over. "Loved it, can hardly wait for their next, highly recommended". So, consider them written!
