RACHEL AUKES writes horror stories, and as BERINN RAE she writes sci-fi romance and paranormal romance. Rachel was raised on a farm in Iowa where she boasted the small town’s largest (and only) comic book collection, and she's still addicted to stories starring characters with kickassitude. When not writing, Rachel flies old airplanes in the American Midwest with her awesomely supportive husband and caters to an incredibly spoiled sixty-pound lap dog.
Book One: 4 stars, Book Two: 4 stars, Book Three: 5 stars. Rounded up to 5 stars.
This is a very enjoyable and easy to read trilogy. I had never read anything by Rachel Aukes before, so I had no idea what to expect in terms of how good or bad the author's writing was. (It's excellent!)
It's an interesting story, and has everything you could ever wish for to entertain you: action, love, two sets of aliens at war, and a female lead who (outwardly, anyway) seems to take everything in her stride and knows her own mind. You find yourself being drawn to the characters. You may even care for them... or hate them. The action is really good and keeps the reader turning the pages to find out what happens next. The twists and turns are so sweet they're almost decay-inducing.
The finale of the trilogy, in particular, brings with it hatred, destruction and death. There were two particularly poignant parts for me that brought tears to my eyes and a huge lump to my throat. I defy anyone not to be overwhelmed with sadness at these points.
I was lucky enough to be sent this complete trilogy; The Colliding Worlds, which includes Collision, Implosion, and Explosion. The tale is of first contact; first contact times two. The characters are well-developed and very likable, even the aliens. Let me introduce the main human characters, then the aliens. Sienna, a strong, sensible woman who gets much more than she bargained for when she pulls the pilot from a crashed plane near her cabin in the Ozarks. Lieutenant Jax, the Army Ranger liaison officer between humans, Sephians, and ultimately Draekens as well. Sephians, a supposed peaceful alien race having a heavy French accent. Draekens, a supposed hostile alien race having a Russian accent. It took me a few chapters to get used to the French accent but still required a bit of concentration. The first volume Collision chronicles the arrival of the aliens, focusing primarily on the Sephians and their efforts to ally with the humans. Volume two Implosion focuses on the Draeken and their bid to ally with the humans while refuting the accusations of the Sephians. Volume three Explosion starts with a bang! A virus has been turned loose on the world and the Draeken are suspect. Since signing a peace treaty, Sephian and Draeken colonists have been restricted to a large camp; the U.S. Extraterrestrial Restricted Zone. The speed and severity of the virus have shocked humans to their core and the U.S. is about to retaliate. Who created the virus, why, and what will be the results is the focus of volume three. Excellent story with an awesome climax! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
