Joseph Finley writes historical fantasy that mixes medieval history, myth, and a dash of magic. He’s a longtime fan of knights, old legends, classic fantasy paperbacks, and wandering through castles and cathedrals on his travels. Most evenings you’ll find him with a glass of wine in hand, and most mornings he’s back at it, surrounded by history books and chasing down the next story.
It's been 6 years since I read Enoch's Device, and I've read close to 300 books in that time. So when I saw the sequel was being released, I was a little nervous I wouldn't remember enough of the details from the first book to throughly enjoy Key to the Abyss.
I didn't have to worry! While page 1 starts where Enoch's Device left off, Key to the Abyss gives enough cues and reminders from Enoch's (and not in a boring summary) throughout the book to remind you of the essential details. Not to mention Ciaran and Alais, (and Khalil!) are unforgettable, so the segue was smooth.
Key to the Abyss is a seamless blend of history and fantasy, so much so that I found myself looking up different events and places to see if they really existed. Incredible detail made it easy to visualize the characters and events. And did I mention Vikings??
While there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you wondering what's going to happen next, it's a great book to savor and not rush through.
Hope we don't have to wait 6 years for the next one!
I loved this book very much. It took me on a journey that I will never forget. It had Romans, Vikings and priests. The battles were intense and the end was thrilling.
