Reeling from her discovery in the stables, Kat is left with no choice. She must find out the truth before she sets sail for Wiete.
But who can she really trust?
As she comes to terms with her family’s secrets, she must decide whether to confront the person she suspects most and risk everything, or live her life in the shadow of lies.
The Emperor is the fifth episode of the coming-of-age epic fantasy serial, The Ravenglass Chronicles. Inspired by the tarot and set in a rich medieval world, it is an epic journey of magic, adventure, and forbidden love.
Jon Cronshaw is a British science fiction and fantasy author based in the north of England, just south of the wall. As a freelance features writer, he has had work published in local and national newspapers across the UK, including the Yorkshire Post and the Guardian. He earned his PhD in history of art from the University of Leeds in 2011, focusing on the life and work of Anglo-American sculptor, Jacob Epstein (1880-1959). As her wedding day approaches she oscillates more between rebelling against her mother and the pressure of being the eldest child of an empress, and living up to the expectations of being a princess and the obligations upon her.
She is also discovering more about her family’s history and also the other worldliness and magic of her Ravenglass knife.
Just when you think Kat has faced the worst of times, you realize she has just begun to fight for her future. In The Emperor, Kat’s adventures become much more serious than in the previous stories leading up to a significant turning point, the question is which fork in the metaphorical road will she take? If you are a Ravenglass Chronicles reader, this is a must read, if you are new to Mr. Cronshaw’s Ravenglass series starting at this point will leave you with very little back story or foundation for this or future stories. Grab the first book – The Fool and start there. I received an advance reader copy and chose to provide this review.
Kat is still searching for answers. A scribe in the palace library explains that history is what the scribe who wrote it recorded. Truth is in the eye of the beholder. Will her marriage to a lecherous foreign pompous pretender win the peace her mother intends.
Marriage to her childhood friend Hansel is only a dream; we know the story of Edward the Eighth. Kat is at pains to reconcile the loving doting father she knew with the cruel tyrant about whom she reads. And then there’s haunting tale of a brother who supposedly died before she was born.
The Emperor is Book #4 in the Ravenglass Chronicles by Jon Crenshaw is a spellbinding, episodic fantasy series that blends tarot-inspired storytelling with a rich coming-of-age journey. Jon Cronshaw crafts a world that feels both intimate and expansive, where magic is woven into the very fabric of the land and every chapter feels like turning over a new card in a mysterious deck. For readers who are looking for immersive world-building, character-driven fantasy, with a tarot-infused storyline that’s brimming with imagination. Happy Reading…
This author has me second guessing every characters motives. I am very much invested now and realize nothing is clear as yet, except that this MC truly keeps making bad decisions no matter how plainly things are spelled out to her. Each time I believe she experienced a light bulb moment in her brain, she does something equally as dumbfounding. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
I was captivated with Kat's life and her trials and tribulations from the very start. Her challenges seemed so insurmountable and her choices limited... I cannot wait to see how the rest of her life unfolds and if she becomes the scribe of her own destiny.
*3.5 stars* Overall the book series is becoming better. Kat is becoming a favorite of mine and I’m excited for her adventure. The author states that this book is the end of Act 1.
Kat's life has turned into a bad situation finding a discovery that turns her world upside down. She has to flee but she is still searching for the truth. Things are not what they seem. Another great book in the series.
