This is the series fans of Twilight and Vampire Diaries can't wait to read.
Isabel Jones lived through a nightmare. She lost everything she had known and everyone that she loved. Now, she's moving to a new town to start over for her senior year. Shaded Falls is a small dot on the map and Isabel has low expectations when she drives into town.
It isn't long before she realizes that Shaded Falls isn't just a forgotten town in the middle of nowhere – it's a hotbed for strange occurrences and mysterious people. One of those people, Nicholas Rockson, seems to always be around, lurking in the shadows. Isabel finds herself drawn to Nick and to the darker elements of Shaded Falls. As she gets pulled into the dangerous underbelly, the true nature of the town is revealed.
Isabel must face her own dark secrets as her past is drawn forth. Everything she's ever believed about her life is about to change, and not always for the better. Isabel is about to find out exactly what happens when darkness falls.
This book was okay. Good enough to finish but not great. It was full of cliches. I didn't think that some of the background made sense. I can't believe that Uncle Jim was so clueless about his town when he was the sheriff. Jim being a sheriff actually didn't come off as believable at all. Isobel was also very well adjusted considering her past. She should have been a little more traumatized, but instead she's running around like she doesn't have a care in the world for most of the book. I also got annoyed by how every guy in the book was a jerk except for Nick. Finally, the author did the waitress cliche, which is my biggest pet peeve. The MC goes to a restaurant with her hot boyfriend and the waitress hits on him and acts rude to the MC. That cliche. Authors need to get over the waitress.
The redeeming element was a spark of originality. I have never read a book where the turned character has a choice about what they turn into. Without that bit this book would only be 2 stars. I probably won't read the next book in the series.
Dead at Twilight definitely pulls inspiration from The Vampire Diaries and, of course, Twilight. But, while the writing and dialogue felt forced at times, it was enjoyable. I felt like I was watching an episode of TVD. I couldn't help but catch all the parallels. From the clueless sheriff (who isn't so clueless) to the Founding Families and parties to bff witches and Hunters. AND, one of Isabel's new friends is named Elena. I can relate almost anything back to The Vampire Diaries. It's a talent.
I never use the word 'instalove' because I love romance in my stories. The more the better in my opinion. But, beware here, because it's instantinstant. 😂
I also kept trying to figure out if I missed a chapter or a whole prequel because Isabel's past kept being referenced but I didn't remember reading about it. Maybe it's explored more in later books???
Shaded Falls has the potential to be a bingeworthy series so on to book 2.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention that Dead at Twilight is currently free on Kindle.
If you’re looking for a vampire and werewolves book with well developed characters and a deep, well thought out plot, this isn’t it.
If you’re looking for an easy vamp and were read and something that doesn’t require too much brain power to process, this is perfect.
I actually quite enjoyed it. It had me hooked within the first couple pages. I liked that The main character, Isabel, wasn’t your typical broody/I want him but won’t let myself want him/ airhead. But yet she wasn’t overly cocky or traumatized, etc... she just went on with life and functioned.
I liked that many of the characters were different ages. The plots are not overly drawn out and detailed (which I appreciated because I wanted an easy read).
The books do end on cliffhangers so be prepared for that. I enjoyed this book enough that I bought the rest of the series that’s available (4 books total including this one) and then read them all in a little over 24 hours.
I know this is the first book in the series, but it’s honestly so rushed and overly established, some of the descriptions are very vague or nonexistent, and I’m not the biggest fan of the unnecessary sarcasm, all that aside, I did enjoy the story quite a bit, and I would be willing to check out more from the series down the road, but I cannot say the story is spectacular it’s just interesting and fast pace action and romance
Can anyone say What is sleep? I started this book at midnight and finished at 5am. 175 pages or so very short. I gave a 5 star because something that can keep me from not putting down is worth it... was this groundbreaking, no, have I read this similar trope, yes. It was unique because where this had vampires and werewolves it also had Nick who is undead but has not picked a side to one or the other for 3 yrs, until Isabel comes into the town, and he wants nothing more but to have her. She is a Hunter and not just any Hunter but a pure-blooded female hunter which has everyone in Shaded Falls after her. Slide Nick in the mix and you have a slow burn romance, sassy hunter girl who has no clue what she really can do. Isabel has lost a lot in her young life and came to the falls to get away from supernatural beings, only to move to the most supernatural place of them all. This will have you on the edge of your sit turning the pages as fast as you can, just to find out whats next. This to me could have been a great standalone if E. J. King just did a few more chapters, we could not have that though no we had to get book 2 just to find out what's going to happen next and how much power does Isabel have or how many. Recommend to 14yrs and up. If you like supernatural's, sassy girls and a slow romance that will have you smiling like a schoolgirl with a crush and friendships then this is for you... Go have fun don't say I didn't warn you of the addiction of these books... Gina Clabo
An interesting take on a vampire hunter. Isabel has just lost everything and is the new girl in town. She soon discovers that she has to face the same thing that she is running away from. Shaded Falls is mystical and there are monsters lurking around. When bad things start to happen, is she going to run again?
At the begenning, she comes across as being too cocky, but her sense of humour soon takes over. She has this forbidden love for Nick who is an interesting character. It ends on a cliffhanger and I am sure more will be revealed in the next installment.
A good start to a series. The characters are well developed and storyline moves quickly. The romantic side could be turned down, considering the girl is 17 and her sexual interest is older than 20. The storyline builds to the point where the reader wants more. Of course, the only way to be able to read more is to read the next book in the series. Thanks for a good read. Keep the story going.
She had lost her dad, her boyfriend, and her mentor to supernaturals. It was am agonizing crash course on survival. Being only 17, her dad's brother becomes her guardian. He lives in Shaded Falls, her father's hometown. What is hiding in Shaded Falls? Why is there a curfew at dusk? Izzy has more questions than answers. Getting answers turns out to be more than she could imagine. Supernaturals exist. Now what?
I enjoyed reading the book but was slightly disappointed that story was not more inventive. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this genre, but my expectations were set a notch higher and I expected more of a jolt from an already flooded storyline. I will be watching for the next installment to see the future progression of the characters.
Due to the historical treatment of the local native americans, the sons of the founding families are cursed. Around the age of 18 they become undead - and have the choice of becoming a vampire or a werewolf. Some of the girls become witches... and some become hunters.
With a bit of (complicated) romance thrown in. Fun.
Shaded Falls-Werewolves and Vampires and now a Hunter
Isabel thinks she is escaping the supernatural world when she moves in with her uncle. Unfortunately that is not the truth, she has landed in a bit bed of brewing rivalry. I can't wait for more.
When Isabel moves back home after the death our her parents, she didn't expect to fund supernatural beings anywhere near Shaded Falls. But that seems to be all that is in the small town.
Tease! Good book about a female hunter and rival groups of werewolves and vampires. A different take on the supernatural world which was interesting enough to make me keep turning the page!
Effectively, Buffy The Vampire Slayer except her name is Izabel and she’s going to be slaying more than vampires :)The love interest isn’t too bad and the dynamic looks like it’ll work. The story kept me more interested than I expected, so was well worth the read.
This book is a fantastic read. Its a story, that to me, is the rise of a hunter. Isabel is one tough girl that falls in love and knows how to engage against supernatural people. Read this book!
Love the characters, setting and story telling. Very easy to get swept away. Looking forward to reading the complete series. Would recommend to friends.
Good book but don’t read this series if you don’t like a switch in love interest!! So disappointed and the switch was a bit h move on the main characters part. So angry right now.
