More Than Anything

Rate this book
Joe Carpenter’s parents have pressured him his entire life. He’s always needed to do more and do it better, but as hard as he tries, he can’t seem to keep his head above water. When a friend makes an offhand comment about finding a Daddy, Joe initially scoffs at the idea—until he doesn’t. Through mutual friends, he meets not one, but two gorgeous men who are looking for somebody just like Joe.

Charles Thurston knew when he called Eugene for a favor, the younger man would come running back into his life. Thurston loves Eugene and wants more than anything to repair the damage to their relationship, but no matter how much time has passed between then, Eugene still isn’t everything Thurston needs.

Eugene lost Thurston once, and he will not do it again. The pressure to be everything Thurston needs is more than he can handle. Unwilling to accept Thurston’s attentive level of attention and discipline, Eugene comes up with a simple solution—find a third.

Joe is the kind of man who can give Thurston what he needs and Thurston used to be the only man Eugene wanted. But once they’re together, the three of them discover a shared life is a life they want more than anything.

Don’t get me wrong. This was lovely.
BUT. At way into the second half of the book all was well between the three main characters and I saw no conflict coming. So, maybe I'm missing out here, maybe not. But the story couldn’t hold my interest any longer.

Also, the part of Thurston and Eugene being a second chance was solved way too quickly. The tension and pining I crave from that trope (that I expected for these two) were missing and I was disappointed.

So I’m dropping it here and move on.

But one quote, if I may, because I loved that sentiment so much:

Thurston was strong enough to lean on when you needed him, and soft enough to land on when you fell.

E.M. Denning has done it again. She's written a book that hits all the right places for me.

We see all three characters appear in book one, Half As Much. I'll be honest here I was not into Joe having a book. He just didn't stand out to me as a character like Eugene and Thurston did. But he so stands out now. Very much so in fact.

These three have very different personalities and probably shouldn't work. That's the talent of E.M. Denning. She has a knack for putting characters together and not only making them fall in love but making them feel special. Feel alive, comfortable, at home. That is so important, something everyone wants, something we all deserve. Not only does she do that she does it in a way that feels natural.

I don't feel like I'm reading the same stories of insta-lust and insta-love. Emo writes sex and emotion and she writes them well, but they don't feel fake. Yes, her characters sometimes fall into bed early, but they have reason to. They have layers and sex is one of those layers. But what I probably wouldn't like in another book I love in hers. Why? Because they have reason. They have purpose. Whether the characters know it or not they're halfway to being each other's everything. And that is what makes me fall in love with the books and the characters. Because I can see thanks to the pretty words on the page how they feel.

My heart broke for Joe. He wasn't in a good place. He was struggling in all the ways and I just wanted to cuddle him and make sure he was okay. I can't say better because there's no "better" for some of the things that Joe faced. But there is good. There is safety, there is self-care. All of those things Joe needed, he just couldn't reach them. Not without help. Enter Eugene and Thurston.

Thurston and Eugene have a history. They tried once in the past but couldn't give each other what they needed. That doesn't mean the feelings went away, doesn't mean they wanted each other any less, they just needed a new way to approach the relationship, even if they didn't know it at the time. When Eugene and Thurston fall back into one another's lives they agree to try something new. To bring in someone else. Such a major decision should scare them, but the only thing they're afraid of is losing each other again.

Daddy Thurston is...different than I expected. He's both as intense as I thought him to be based on what we see in Half As Much, but not. I know he has a softer side, based on things said in More Than Anything, and the whole premise of the book. But the way he is with Joe and with Eugene is endearing. I loved how patient and kind he was with Joe, but also how exacting, demanding, and impatient he could be. He loved both his boys and everything he did showed that.

Eugene is probably my favorite of the triad. He had the looks, the money, and the name to get anything he wanted. Yet he didn't use those things unless he had to. And never for himself, but for the men in his life. He's a brat, but there's also a maturity there that he hides well. It comes out more and more the longer Joe is with them, but he'll never stop being a brat. He's my favorite because he's the one who doesn't seem to fit in the relationship. You wouldn't think he'd be okay to be in a triad, let alone have a Daddy. But he needs it. He needs the stable life Thurston provides. He needs someone to care for--even if he didn't know he needed that before Joe.

Together these three men come together and tell a very well written, well-rounded love story. E.M. Denning wrote a book that I got lost in. Her words always seem to flow off the page and I usually forget I'm reading because I become so invested in these characters. That happened here. I didn't realize I was nearing the ending until I was teary at what happened. No spoilers, but let's just say it was the perfect ending to the story of the Daddy, the boy, and the brat.

3.5 ménage stars. I enjoyed these characters and their dynamic. While they all had their own approach to the relationship, there was no doubt they complimented each other. Thurston was the senior, the Daddy who loved his brat Eugene but needed someone to pamper and spoil. Eugene suggested they bring in a third and by a stroke of luck they meet Joe at a friends party. Joe was in a dark place, working 3 jobs, battling an insurmountable debt and depression. Taking a risk he agreed to trial being part of Thurston & Eugene’s family. The rest was history. Really sweet ❤️

This is a good m/m/m in that it has room for all the different men and they all have a place in the relationship. It's sexy and I could feel the emotional attachment between them.

However, this also has my least favorite daddy kink trope in the "rescued youngster just simply overwhelmed by life". Every time Joey whined about getting an economics degree he'll never use and worried about his student loans I wanted to quit the book. At no time in the book does he appear to actually try to get a job that would be associated with his degree. Instead he works three low paying jobs he's overqualified for and stresses about money. And then his savior comes in and just makes it all go away. There is absolutely no repercussions now for getting a degree he didn't want with money he didn't have and having no backbone to deal with that before he was overwhelmed by the debt incurred. And a Fraternity and all those extra costs using student loans? Ugh. No.

I didn't like Joey that much but I did love how much Eugene and Thurston (but I loved Eugene the most) loved him and that made the book for me.

This is probably a case of it's me, not the book. We all have our preferences. I like Daddy kink but I grow very weary of the young guy who's so overwhelmed by life he needs a Daddy to come along and sweep him off his feet and fix everything. I feel for Joe, who But the setup here between Thurston, Eugene and Joe just doesn't intrigue me.

Balance

An excellent Daddy kink triad romance. One daddy, one tippy brat, and one boy, starved for affection. I liked Joey adjusting to the idea that he actually has people to care for him, and Eugene being more mature having someone to care for and keep safe. I think they have a great dynamic. It's also nice that no one is trying to hide that they are a triad.

2019 = 3 stars
2024 = reread to write review

MM Poly Romance with light BDSM & Daddy kink.

A pretty good story that's sweet and somewhat sexy. My first read was good, but a failed reread in 2022, and my 2024 read, showed why it remains at 3 stars.

💖 Recommended for those wanting a mostly light & fluffy read.

The Good:
✅ The older MCs care for the young, needy sub.
✅ The MCs are distinct and likable, though not fully fleshed out.
✅ There's a bit of depth. Two MCs need a third. When the poly relationship is complete, they're happy and a few touching moments occur. 🤗

The Bad:
➊ The plot moves quickly and unrealistically.
➋ Most of the relationship development occurs off-page. We learn about it as weeks pass.
➌ There are multiple sex scenes. At the beginning and end, with several in between. The scenes lack detail and emotional depth.
➍ The story lacks sensory details, making it bland and less engaging.
➎ The problems are resolved in a page or two.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐂𝗌:
Charles Thurston (pushing 50): A wealthy English Professor and Dom.

Eugene (34): Freelance English Professor, comes from money, and is versatile.

Joseph/Joe (22): A recent economics graduate, has no desire to use his degree, is heavily in debt, and feels adrift. His parents force him to be independent. A year ago, he .

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓: (some spoilers)
The story begins with Thurston and Eugene reconciling after their breakup. Eugene, a brat who prefers discipline and limited affection, convinces Thurston he needs someone to dote on and spoil. Thurston needs more, and it turns out Eugene does too, as a third helps him mature.

Joe, lonely and overwhelmed by his messy life, considers getting a sugar daddy. Thurston and Eugene meet Joe at a party at a mutual friend's house. With a friend's help, Joe becomes involved with T & E. They quickly establish a DD/lb/lb relationship, move in together, and fall in love.

A Few Problems:
● Joe misses a date with Thurston and Eugene, and they find him asleep at his apartment, exhausted from working three jobs. Thurston takes control, urges Joe to stay with him, and convinces him to quit two jobs. He also pays off Joe's debts.

● Thurston and Joe go with Eugene to his aunt's charity dinner. After Eugene leaves Joe alone, Joe gets upset and drinks when he overhears people talking about him. Thurston, angry that he put his health at risk, later spanks him to show that he cares and b/c he's not allowed any alcohol. Eugene is also punished.

● Joe goes to pack up his old apartment; Thurston drops him off, promising to return. Joe can't reach Thurston, who also can't reach Joe due to a broken phone. Joe walks home, while Thurston frantically searches for his baby boy. Upon return, Joe is punished by writing out all of his rules.

6/19/19: Looking back on this 1.5 months later, I have excellent memories of it, so I'm rounding up to 3.25 stars -- I want to give it 4 stars, but if the editing is as bad as I said below, I just can't condone it...

I liked this one better than the first, although the editing was still abysmal. The dynamic between the three men was lovely, and watching Joe's confidence grow along with Eugene's maturity was wonderful. 2.75 stars rounded up.

Loved it! Endearing, engaging, sexy.

I already want to read this again! One of my favorite things about this author’s works is the true emotion I see. Always an ideal balance-yes, sexy and steamy OF COURSE, but so heartfelt as well. At the risk of being repetitive, endearing is the perfect word. I love how the author takes an atypical character (or two or three), a dynamic that’s not completely mainstream, and makes it not only hot and sexy but also romantic and loving, all at once.

The chemistry between the three men is tangible. Character and relationship development is spot on and everything just works. This is the ideal level of Daddy kink for me, and meshes well into the overall flow of the book. The Daddy/boys dynamic doesn’t overpower the plot and relationship-and vice versa.

I also enjoyed revisiting the setting/community and time with previous characters, one of my favorite parts of reading series-seeing everyone and everything I loved in a previous book again. I also of course can’t wait for whatever comes next!

Loved it, I highly recommend this (and book 1, Half as Much)! I will be eagerly awaiting more!

Daddy yummy

I loved this book! Professor Thurston gets his story! This book is deliciously filled with daddy kink. And Thurston is one sexy daddy. This is not an abdl story.
Thurston and Eugene love each other but both recognize that something is missing. Or rather someone. They both realize that they need someone who they can spoil and care for. Joe is that someone. This is a fantastic story of how the three of them come together. Including all of the sexy times we love to read! Can't wait to read what is next!

Beautiful Triad story

Have you ever read a book that made you just so joyful that the characters found each other.
Throughout the book every character made me feel.
Joe desperately needed hugs and people that loved him. Eugene needed that too even though he was very resistant to it. Thurston was the glue that kept everything just so, the love, the care and the romance.
I really love this book. I know I’ll be re-reading very soon.

The Daddy, the brat, and the boy

I really enjoyed this book. The characters don't seem like they should work together, but they do. I enjoyed the gentle way Joe's depression was presented and the care he got from the other two men. Eugene was my favorite, as the middle man. He grew more emotionally the longer Joe was with them. Thurston was a great daddy, both fair and stern. All in all, this gave me everything I want in MMM.

Daddy Thurston and Eugene are everything but when you add in Joe it makes this book so much more. The relationship these three men have is everything I love in a book and I can not say enough about this amazing book. EM Denning has a winner on her hands with this book.

Expected More

Thurston, Eugene and Joe’s story really didn’t meet my expectations. I usually love triad relationship stories but not this one…

Each of the main characters had a clearly defined role, but it was their personality traits within those roles that really didn’t work for me.

Eugene was ‘the brat’, but he was just a bit too childish to be endearing, deliberately pushing someone’s buttons really doesn’t appeal to me, it’s just immature.

Thurston was ‘the Daddy’, but I didn’t take to his style of control, nor did I really like him just in general.

Joe was ‘the baby’, I wanted him to be a bit more confident in his own capabilities, I felt he relied too heavily on the other two for his happiness and that made me feel frustrated.

Their relationship started like a business transaction and I didn’t feel like it ever really evolved. They said they all loved one another.. but I just didn’t really believe them, if this was real life I’d fast forward ten years and be unsurprised if I’d learned they’d separated. It was only a HFN ending to me..

Also, whoever edited this story could have done a much better job because there were quite a few spelling and grammatical errors which contributed to me not enjoying the read.

This is a beautifully written story. You’ve got your Daddy, the brat, and the baby boy to complete the triad.

Thurston and Eugene needed Joseph to balance out their triad.
• Joseph’s life hasn’t been the easiest and he’s lost after graduating college, working 3 jobs, and wearing himself out. Joseph is truly touch starved and it pains you, the reader, when you feel his need to be loved.
• Eugene comes from wealth and needs a strong hand to keep him in line. However, he matures and is someone Joseph leans on for courage and guidance. Ugh, it’s beautiful to read.
•Thurston, the Daddy, needs someone to pamper with affection & his other side enjoys the challenge of a brat. But too much of one side doesn’t work, hence the reason for a triad.

The story has no angst which I LOVE. Also, the character and relationship development in the story was well written. The steamy scenes are glorious 😈 The more daddy kink I read, the more I love it.

All in all, great book!

I adore mmm+ and Daddy Doms so this seemed like a great fit. The premise is another of my favorites, adding a third to an already established couple. Especially when that third will be a pampered bottom to the two others. A daddy dom, a brat and a baby boy? Basically my perfect trifecta. Add in a little discipline and what's not to love?

However, the execution left a lot to be desired. It felt a little like an outline that was never fleshed out. There was so much telling, not showing. We jumped months and months in this book so it felt like we were just getting the cliff notes of their relationship which is just a bummer. There was a little discipline which I liked, but even those scenes were pretty short.

Basically, I felt robbed of a good story. I read it because it gave it enough of what I like to keep me hoping for me, but it never quite delivered.

Another awesome add to the series. Joe, Thurston and Eugene are fun, sexy and their difference fit together perfectly. I loved how Thurston and Eugene loved each other and with their second chance to make things work together they know they missing something and fight for each other when trying something new: bringing in a third. Enter in Joe who's story will break your heart and you can't help but want to hold him and fit things. Each of these guys has their own voice, insecurities and strengths that I loved I couldn't pick a favorite. Coming together they are explosive and sweet at the same time. I didn't want the book to end.

This rating was challenging to give. The character development was lacking, and the excessive use of the word "Daddy" in the context of the "Daddy trope" became tiresome. I conducted a word count on my Kindle to confirm the frequency of its usage. 🤣 Regrettably, I did not find this book as enjoyable as the first in the series. The initial relationship dynamics were off, and the pace of relationship development between Joe and Thurston did not exceed my personal preference. I enjoyed Eugene the most, and that's reaching bc Joe and Thurston had more potential but didn't come thru in the end. I'll give the spice level a 2 🌶 🌶.

Wow!

Where hot and steamy meets love and tenderness. EM Denning has done it again with her second book in the Upstate Education series. In this book, we get a little more personal with Thurston and Eugene, add in lost and lonely Joe and we get Daddy, Brat, and Boy.

I love the flow of this story as well as the feelings invoked by it. I was enveloped and invested in the feelings between these men and how they express their needs, wants, and concerns. Throw in a feline that sheds everywhere and you get a most unique family. Definitely not a book to be missed.

OMG! I loved it. The dynamic in a mmm relationship never fails to intrigue me. This one was super hot and very sweet at times. Thurston and Eugene loved each other but couldn't make it work. Neither filled each other's needs completely, until sweet, eager to please, Joe stumbled into their lives. Joe was a hot mess, drowning in colledge debt, working three jobs, exhausted, having been brought up that you did for yourself. He needed Daddy Thurston and tippy Eugene to guide his way... and they so did.

What do you get when you have a semi grumpy Daddy, a bratty boy and a baby boy? Pure perfection! EM Denning first introduced us to Daddy Thurston and boy Eugene in book one of the series. Joe also made an appearance separately in the first book. Book two fulfills our dreams of a perfect Daddy (at least in my case - can I have one please?) who finally comes to believe that he can have what he needs in his bratty and baby boys. The boys each grow in their own ways. Such a wonderful story!

Amazing

I never would have thought a three person Daddy story would be so wonderful. I've only read one before and it was nowhere near as beautiful. If you can't tell, I really loved this story. It was done with love and care, focusing on love and appreciation, rather than discipline and rules. Don't get me wrong, it's a Daddy book, so there was definitely both, but it was perfectly balanced. I would definitely recommend this book.

The Daddy, Brat, and Baby Boy

Is Hot Hot Hot!!! I loved this book. Daddy kink is my favorite and I prefer it on the sweet side and this delivered it. It in no way detracts from my like but it would have been nice for joe to go to therapy. There is so much stigma against it that it would have been nice for the author to use their platform to normalize it.

This series is yummy! This book is flipping fantastic! It was a ménage with Daddy/boy kink. Daddy Thurston made me swoon while Eugene made me laugh and Joey was the perfect third to complete their relationship! EM does kink magically...never losing sight of the romance! I needed this book to never end! Can’t wait for more of this series!

Very good ménage story.

Well balanced. Very sexy. Lovable characters. Just no too sure about the end, did not feel right. My favorite character was Eugene, who I believe is the real “glue” of the relationship. Joe was necessary for Thurston and Eugene to work but I think Eugene was necessary for Thurston and Joe as well, even if not as explicitly.

I enjoyed this book just as much as I’ve enjoyed all of the books that I’ve read by this author so far. I love the twist at the end. I’ve read a lot of polyamorous books and I think this is the only one I’ve read with this particular spin to it so I have to give props for originality. Highly recommended and I definitely hope for more books in this series soon.

Just As Good As First

This book was just as good as first book. Thurston, Eugene and Joseph make a hot threesome in this story with Thurston being the Daddy, Eugene being the brat and Joseph being the golden boy. It all just worked. Lots of educating going on here. I hope there is at least one more book for Will maybe. Highly recommend this series.
