Everyone’s favorite atomic-powered multi-role surface weapons system is back! Thrill as he and his comrades bomb and strafe their way across the galaxy fighting evil. Plot? We don’t need no steenkin’ plot! Or… do we? Even as the cybertanks blithely go about their daily routines of shopping, playing immersive adventure games and blowing things up, there is a shadowy presence that lurks insidiously within the very heart of their civilization. Where does it come from? What does it want? Is it great fun at parties? We don’t know either because we haven’t written the ending yet, but I’m sure we’ll come up with something. Active ingredients (45% by volume): Cybertanks, vampires, space monkeys, MegaHitler, the Dichoptic Maculatron (played by herself), self-aware museums, plastic blocks, talking swords, Neoliberal Economists, and fiendish alien thought-viruses. I grew up in Boston, MA, and got an electrical engineering degree from M.I.T. I then worked at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) for a time, then got my PhD in Physiology, and did a post-doctoral fellowship at the Laboratory of Neuropsychology at the NIH. Since 1996 I have been on the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the Department of Vision Sciences. My primary research interest is in the nature of the neural code, and the physical basis of human thought. I live with my wife Adrienne and an Australian Shepherd named "Ginger" and a strange mutt named "Proton." I have a son who works as an engineer in Vandenberg Air Force base in CA, and a daughter who teaches English in Japan. My hobbies are carpentry, tinkering with electronics, and making plants die.
I've long been a fan of cybertanks. Starting with the Bolos, then for years playing OGRE. I was very happy to stumble across the stories of Old Guy and his friends. Frisbee, Fanboy, and others are represented here: but it winds up centered around Olga. There's plenty of Old Guy sarcasm for the fans here. Anytime Old Guy wants to share a story, I'll be happy to pull up a seat.
The rapidly changing society of cheetahs has been enjoyable to follow. Hopefully mr. Yawns can keep the storylines interesting with all the changes in their society.
I was delighted to discover this author and his Cybertank universe. Interesting, fun concepts. Lots of exciting battles and adventures. A vein of humor running throughout that kept me chuckling, puns and all.
The "Old Guy" books are great entertainment, but every great story has an end. Gawne has written a very satisfying end to the series without completely ruling out another chapter in the saga. Well done!
Another in the "Old Guy". Although I have certainly enjoyed the novels, Old Guy seems to find his finest expression in the anthology format, and this book is no exception. Light, fun scifi adventure. Gawne is a neuroscientist and has many interesting ideas about mentality and AI. How about the further adventures of Olga Razon and Fanboy, Dr. Gawne!
How can not love them? Highly eccentric war machines with attitude and absurd sence of humor to match. If you like Keith Laumer's Bolos you gonna love cybertanks!
