The Guardian

Rate this book
Jess is on the hunt for Cliff Radish, and after he puts him down, he ends up taking the body to the town of Duston, Texas. The town marshal there happens to be Cliff’s older brother, Ernie. While there, two men gun down the marshal and he’s unable to perform his duties.

Ernie Radish calls on Jess to protect the town until he can get out of bed and to make matters worse, a huge cattle drive will arrive in a few days. Jess finds himself dealing with hired guns, whores, drunken cowpunchers and drifters coming to town. He pins his United States Marshal’s badge on and takes over the law in Duston.

The cattle drive leaves and the working girls try to hire Jess to escort them safely to Oklahoma City, but instead, he recommends they hire Rick Muller, a gambler and gunslinger from California, who happens to be hanging around Duston. Before Jess leaves town, he realizes that three outlaws are trailing the wagon of women.

He quickly finds himself helping Muller transport the women, but trouble seems to show up at every turn. He has to deal with ambushers, gunslingers and men with a grudge against him.

STRANGERS MEETING

Jess Williams meets Rick Muller who makes a living as a professional gambler. He's just returned from California and on his way to Kansas to another big time poker game in Kansas. Jess is in Duston, Texas, where he just turned in a recent bad man for the bounty, which we all know he doesn't need. While there he meets RIck Muller, who Jess was suspicious about, because he constantly stated at him, making us all think he was going to challenge Jess. Then Jess meets a Madame and her girls who follow a cattle drive providing their services to cowboys herding the cattle. As usual Jess takes out a few owlhoots, murderers, felons to us and escorts these soiled doves to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to wait for the cattle drive to arrive. During that trip Jess helps foil an ambush led by three men whose intentions were far from honorable, but whose intentions were to seek the women to a a murderous trading post pimp, who buys women to sell them to anyone who can pay the price. Besides mistreatment, abusive beatings just a miserable excuse for a human being. This was the fate of many miseries that faced women living in the west issued by the cowboys or their husbands....such is life..Jess rescued Lilley from this pimp who had made her dig her own grave with a gun barrel aimed directly at her head...to dehumanize her further he made her dig the grave naked, so he could use her clothes for the next sex slave kept against her will. Jess rescued her and she joined Maria's girls not as a prostitute, but heading to Seattle, Washington to live with her sister.
Jess Williams Series we all enjoy the plots and the different characters we meet as we ride the trails with Jess, Gray and Sharps. It's a special treat when Shadow appears and travels along with Jess, and the special relationship he has with Sharps who he runs with and the greetings he gives Sharps...makes you wonder about that especially horses are spooked by wolves..sensational. A great series...

The 77th Novel About Jess Williams/Professional Bounty Hunter

RJT. Has penned the 77th Novel in the Jess Williams Series. JW is working West Texas Panhandle Western. He delivers his bounty to a sheriff. The Sheriff is wounded and Jess Williams, as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, assumed the position of City Marshal after the sheriff is wounded. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Good, As Always - But...

I love the entire series and Mr. Thomas has grown very adept at rounding out his stories as time has passed. There were a few editing errors in this one but surely not as bad as at the beginning of our long ride together. I am still waiting for a bit more ethnic/cultural diversity in the books, maybe the many settlements of Negro, Irish, or German founding in Texas after the Civil War. Please???
