This book was my first foray into the Captivating History series, and in order to see whether or not the series actually lives up to its name, I intentionally chose a topic that I found extremely tedious and boring in high school many years ago. All I can say now is that I wish this series existed all those years ago! Straight to the point, exciting, and tremendously informative.

I especially enjoyed learning more about Napolean Bonaparte and his role before, during, and after the revolution. I was also surprised to find myself feeling sorry for Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. I remember being taught that they were cruel and ruthless rulers, but it seems that they were just extremely naive.

Incidentally, France is now again in the midst of what has the potential to become another full blown revolution, and the circumstances and reasons have not changed very much (See Chapter 5 - Taxes, Famine, and the Enlightenment). Talk about history repeating itself...

For those of you like me who know nothing about the French Revolution other than the cake, the Palace and the guillotine, then this is the book for you. By the end you will know the significance of those three items and many more facts too.

This is a sad story in many parts, more so due to incidents that could not easily have been altered or changed. King Louis XV had laid the path for King Louis XVI to follow.

Like me you might feel that the upshot of the whole affair was an outcome for France that was fairer for all in the long run. However, it is difficult to view Versailles Palace and not think that as beautiful as it is, it was a bridge too far for the peasants to swallow. A loaf would have been better.

This book is good as an intro to the Fr. Rev. but a little thin for people more in the know. It does a lot of skipping around (probably needed when so many different people involved). There are a # of words used that the author must assume everybody knows but I doubt it. People may need to look up these words, & that's annoying. The famous quote of Marie Antonette is alluded to a couple of times but the context of it is not given. Napoleon's role is narrated very quickly. Whole volumes have been written on Nap. & here it takes only 1 short chapt. Napoleons Russian adventure is never mentioned. Adding a gloss. of terms used would be helpful.

A solid introduction

I really enjoy Matt Clayton’s series of short history books. His coverage of the French Revolution and its causes is solid, although he jumps around in time rather than using a strictly chronological approach. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the events of the French Revolution, this is a good starting point, and Clayton includes a bibliography for more in-depth exploration of the era.

Refresher

There are few events in human history as impactful as the French Revolution which in a way helped to shape the world we live in today by bringing down the old system of absolute monarchies. This book manages to condense 10 years of eventful action into merely 106 pages, I am quite passionate towards books of this kind which help to see things I’ve learn in school from a quite different angle. I super recommend, it is a quick read and yet very informative

There are many interesting facts and figures that will intrigue readers. Key people and events are discussed briefly in detail. This book whets the appetite to learn more more and find books on the subject.

A nice summary of a complicated period. Inevitably in a short treatise, some events are overlooked or glossed over but in general the book put the events in context in a balanced and objective manner. For people with little or no knowledge of the events it is an excellent "enlightenment".

Excellent book on the French Revolution

Excellent reading. Very well researched. The book she'd light on Louis XVI's compassion for his people and how Marie was wilingl to adopt orphans into their home. I highly recommend this book.

Needed something to listen to on a longish drive with the husband and historical war fiction is his jam. I learned a lot - but I think I forgot it already. :O
