A wonderful book and a must-have for children. I'm sending a copy to my nephew so he'll better learn to build fires, slingshots, dugout canoes, igloos, shelters, etc. He'll also be ready to escape a car trunk, a sinking vehicle, a brick jail cell and more! All those pesky fears about ghosts, zombies and aliens (the outer space kind) are alleviated with clear, sensible information and instruction. There's also a wealth of valuable advice regarding pimples, your first dance, missing homework, bears, sharks, avalanches and honeybees. All presented in an interesting, light-hearted manner with no ickily condescending overtones. I think I may have to buy a copy for myself, and I'll bring it with me on my next ride in a small airplane, and then I'll be able to land the plane (in case of emergency) and, thanks to page 122, I'll know how to be a modest hero upon my handily managed landing. I'm so inspired, I'm gonna run out right now (the book I now have must be returned to the public library) and get into a tricky situation so that I can experience the satisfaction of engineering my own survival.
THE BOYS' BOOK OF SURVIVAL is a uniquely comedic book that can help young boys face any situation - from a zombie invasion, to a school dance, to landing an airplane.
There are many educational tips in this book that can be used in real life if one every got lost or stuck in a forest or was in any other dire situation. There are also impractical, yet funny, tips on how to survive alien invasions and disastrous pimples.
Guy Campbell writes witty and useful tips that will keep the reader wanting more. This book is a very quick read and the great illustrations by Simon Ecob only enhance the book's overall satisfaction.
And don't think that this book is only useful for boys; being an 18-year-old girl, I found this book very helpful, as well. I learned how to survive many dangerous situations, such as walking into quicksand or confronting a bear.
No matter your age or gender, this is one fast and funny read.
This is a great "how to" guide for boys and gils to deal with and excel in any situation they may be presented with (no matter how crazy it may seem). Although the book stresses a need for an adult when going on an expedition, this book answers many of the "what if.." questions young children always seem to ask. I would recommend this book to older children (and even adults) to read. From how to fish with your bare hands to surviving a bully at school, this book will prepare you for any situation out there!
Filled with useful and sometimes outlandish strategies which can be used in various emergency situations. Most of the tips for survival are excellent, but there are a few “red herrings” thrown-in the mix. Great, en- joyable read for most boys, yet most anybody would benefit from the contents and advice rendered in the book.
Full of sh!t book, full of lies. This is one of those books that makes me wish for negative stars. At best humorous for a child, but is just awful advice.
Not even good as a BR reader for me. Very childish. They try to be humorous but epic fail army! How to survive Zombies & an Alien Invasion, versus actual practical advice like how start a fire or deal with bullies. As for the actual practical, they are lies. I have a an argument with my principal father for 40 years that continues to this day. I became a bully at HIS school to PROVE tell a teacher was baloney!
What happens when you tell the teacher on a bully? From great experience I can safely say nothing good. Even in adulthood, I actually wrote HR a very long well thought out letter about a bully. This bully had an extensive history, including violence, at that company. Including with me all the way back to HS. At that company we had a seminar on workplace violence directly because of him. Directly after the seminar, he broke someone's nose, what do you think HR did? What do you think the police did? When it comes to bullies you are on your own. No one, especially those whose job it is to deal with bullies, will deal with it. You must fight the bully until they go away. Horrible advice.
How to read a compass? OK so this book was published in 2009. It is 2025. When did people stop using watches with hands? Apparently after 2009. Kids today use phones as watches. What smartphones came after 09? When did people revert back to watches with hands? I can find a clock or any device with hands.
While there is some - "SOME" - actual valuable advice ((3 fires forming a triangle is a well known distress signal) true enough though not actually true - source? ME. I am in the safety industry)) by bookending it between Yeti (not the cooler!) and surviving a family Christmas, this book squanders anything it might have attained from serious legitimate entries.
The Boys' Book of Survival: How to Survive Anything, Anywhere Guy Campbell Informational Text Book Level: 4.7
For a students that love the outdoors and mystery, this is the book you give them. Young boys or girls with an adventurous spirit will find this book hard to put down. Readers will find survival and adventure skills throughout this book, both practical and ones that you will probably never need. One thing is for sure, kids who don't typically like to read, this one is for them because it plays into the things they likely do like to do.
The ideas seen in this book are priceless and will have readers excited with every new skill learned. Readers will be stimulated by the ideas seen here and be itching to try some of them for themselves.
A curious blend of truly practical advice & hilarious comments. While I cringe a bit at the gender bias it is a product of its time and the duelling, alien invasion, haunting, bringing down an airplane in an emergency, visiting with an abomindable snowman, surviving zombie invasion and school disco and a long car ride and family xmas certainly made me smile. The practical bits that I certainly intend to try out include using the sun in lieu of compass, survival shelter building & making a ladder out of rope & branches ;-)
I skimmed this book and read a few of the chapters before assigning it to my almost 10 year old son to read. He gives it a 4 star rating, and I'd also say around 3 or 4 stars. Most of the chapters (about 2 pages each) dealt with real survival tips like tying knots and building shelters. Others were silly like surviving holidays with extended family or going to a dance. My son was afraid of the one on zombies 😅 This would would have been 5 stars if it stuck to real survival tips. Great pictures, warnings, and encouragement.
I absolutely loved the Boys’ book of survival. Contrary to the title this book is great for young boys and girls, and even adults! This book is full of answers to all of those what if questions. The author does well to answer them in entertaining ways and with interesting tips. It will teach young readers not only about survival techniques, but tips for things they are bound to encounter as they grow up. For instance what they should do to survive their first dance, or first pimple. This book may be just as beneficial to adults as it is for children.
sometimes this book jokes around and tries not to take itself seriously, but it is actually a very useful handbook. the tone is right fire the target audience. it's a great book full of ideas of tasks and arts and crafts. I know my nephew will have fun with this book and I hope he actually tries to do some of these things!
This book was absolutely fantastic, it gave me many tips, and taught me many things, the next time I go camping, for sure I will take this book. If you have a tornado coming your way, it tells you what to do, if your in a shark attack, it tells you what to do. Read to find out, to not only save your life, but others to!
This book was pretty entertaining, but it had about a dozen random things, like how to survive a zombie attack or surviving a visit form a abominable snowman. Those things a very unlikely, so it makes it lees entertaining for me.
