The Chameleon Effect

The Golden Thread

Rate this book
She’s an empath who can read anyone’s feelings, except his. He can sense her every emotion and possibly read her mind. It’s like he stole her ability and is using it against her…

Megan Van Olsen didn't want to move to California. She prefers New York, with its melting pot of emotions that swathes her like a blanket, and all she can think about it going back. That is until the crystal embedded in her chest starts going haywire.

Bry Miller has a crystal, too, and a few secrets of his own. Secrets so strange he can’t risk falling in love. Not when a simple dream could trigger his transformation into a scaly green monster.

Then he spots Megan and his crystal goes crazy. She’s golden-haired, beautiful… and to the crystal tugging him in her direction, totally irresistible. If only he could turn off the plethora of mix messages he’s picking up from her. Emotions that make him feel wanted one second and rejected the next.

The Golden Thread is a tie-in novella to the Chameleon Effect Series.

Alex Hayes

Alex Hayes lives in a castle. Not one of those dark, damp ones in England (or Scotland, even) where it rains all the time, but a white one with the view of a volcano where it’s sunny 364 days out of the year.

She hosts four cats. One white queen. Two black knights. And a ginger jester, famed for her impressive backflips and pirouettes.

Alex is considering turning her castle into a cat sanctuary. It all depends on whether she can find a way to pay the food bills. (If you think she should, buy her books. The cats will thank you.)

When she isn’t writing, she's thinking about what to write next, while working on her tan. (Vitamin D rules.)

She’s a vegetarian (almost vegan) who believes in love not war, feminine power, and enjoys singing (usually quite badly).

This an easy reading book that draws you in. It’s a good thing that it can easily be done in one day because you want to put it down. It’s about two teens going through those difficult years of self discovery and finding out about themselves. That is difficult enough, but add in strange phenomena that is also happening to them and around them , and it just becomes weird and frightening. Both are adopted so they can’t ask their adoptive parents for explanations. Neither is aware that they are both experiencing the same thing and that too makes it difficult as they are getting strong feelings for each other and are afraid of what the other will think. There is no final ending as this is part of a series.

I read lots of romance books each week and very little paranormal. But this novella, which features both, hooked me right away. The premise for the attraction between Megan and Bry was intriguing. It kept drawing me in to see how the characters were going to react once they figured out what was going on with the crystal in their chests. The story was amazingly dense, especially considering its length, and I’ve already begun reading the next book in the series to continue the romantic journey.

Well this book sure keep me reading, yes I'm going to find the next book. This book is about fate and foster kids. A crystal neckless and find out who they really are... But the question is what are they?

Great introduction to a series. I was very impressed with both the story line and the writing.

This story was pretty cute, though it was short and I felt like the last bit could've used more development and seemed rushed. The sample chapters at the end make it apparent that this is connected to a series, so I would hope that a lot of the questions that remained unanswered would be answered in the other books. The main characters abilities were interesting, but I think a lot of the story could happen without them. So maybe this is something else that can be better explained within the overarching series...

I'd really prefer to give this a 3.5 but the stars won't cooperate. I think that this book would be well suited to junior high students. It has some interesting sci-fi tones to it that will give forth to more stories as the series builds. Though it does bounce between the two main characters I didn't find that that format took away from the story presented.

I found The Golden Thread… interesting. I’ve given it two stars because, while I finished it, it was only really because I like to finish what I start. I would have given it two-and-a-half stars if given the option. The following has some minor spoilers.

Then, there’s the way she gets described as being actually physically perfect. Despite her emotion problem and her severe desire to go back to NYC, she reads as a Mary Sue from the start. “Heavenly legs,” “incredible ass,” “eyes that sparkle like faceted diamonds,” “hips rocking side to side in this sexy way.” The list goes on with how absolutely perfect she apparently looks. Why does every female protagonist have to be blond haired and blue eyed?

The same goes with Bry’s character; he’s apparently perfect, too, by the way Megan describes him. “Perfect jawline,” “arrow-straight eyebrows,” “eyes as black as the night of a new moon,” “velvety eyes,” “soul-pinning eyes,” “perfect dimples.”

Neither really felt like they had individual personalities; they were almost written as the same person, just different pronouns and names.

The action/climax of the story also left little to the imagination. I understand it’s a novella but there was so much exposition and the awkward thing was uninteresting and predictable. Nothing /actually/ happened.

The romance was quick and unbelievable to me. Two weeks feels a little brash to .

Overall, I suppose the plot was okay. I think, if given the chance in a full-length novel, it could have been fleshed out better and the romance could have taken a lot longer to build. I definitely could have done without the instant attraction, but it is what it is. It just didn’t have enough action that would keep me wanting to read more.

If you’re into quick sci-fi-ish-fantasy with a bit of romance, this could be up your alley.

For proofreading:

“Once the lady’s left” should be “ladies” on page 13 (or the first page of chapter 2: Bry)
