Dr. Evangeline Parr lost it all when the Xathi attacked Fraga. When she's asked to establish a clinic in the devastated town of Einhiv, she jumps at the chance to help.
The only problem? A smart ass, joking Skotan warrior. He's a terrible patient. Impossible. Refuses to take anything seriously.
Until they're caught in an explosive situation, and a new side of him emerges.
Protective. Efficient.
And very intriguing.
Sakev joined the Skotan fleet after an... unusual career. The ghosts of his past have mostly subsided against the ongoing struggle to keep up with the Xathi attacks and their new hybrid weapons.
Mostly.
He never expected a tiny human female to break through his carefully constructed facade.
But his past pales against the mystery of the war they're fighting. And when the enemy changes yet again, keeping Evie safe becomes more than just another mission.
It's the only mission he cares about.
Sakev is the fourth book in the science fiction romance series Conquered World. Each book features the romance of a new couple, with alpha male alien warriors and women who don't put up with their nonsense. No cheating, no cliffhangers, HEA guaranteed!
I'm going to start this by saying I am enjoying these books. BUT...Sakev's astounding lack of impulse control in fraught situations drove me batty. Like, he put his team AND Evie's lives in danger on more than one occasion simply because he wanted to do something and went ahead and did it without considering how it might affect others.
*blink, blink* *blink*
Dude. No. Putting yourself in danger is one thing. I mean, if you're going to be a bonehead and rush into situations without covering your flank...I guess that's cool. But when you endanger your teammates and the person entrusted to you for protection...not cool.
That said, Evie uncovered more facets of the Xathi invasion AND found a potential new ally, so I was into that. Sakev did eventually act a little more carefully and he pulled his weight when things went south. The alien crew are finding mates to balance them out, which is a good, but they're also still trying to get home and I'm not sure how that's going to work for those who have paired up. To be fair, though, there's plenty of time to deal with that. First they have to defeat the bad guys and figure out how to get their ship spaceworthy again and that's not going to be happening anytime soon, right?
As a doctor, Evie has always wanted to help, so when the opportunity to go to one of the other human cities crops up, she jumps at the chance. Sakev uses humour as a defense, and even an offense. He’s impulsive, primarily because he craves action. So he’s not entirely thrilled to be given bodyguard duty, and escort Dr. Evie to the human city. The Xathi have been running experiments, and it’s up to Evie to learn as much as possible so the crew of the Vengeance can stop them. Of course, the annoy, yet attractive alien with her might just be more hindrance than help.
Book four in the series has some interesting new turns. The Xathi are working on a different plan, and it’s very dangerous to humans. The crew of the Venegance are trying hard to overcome the Xathi, but they’re badly overwhelmed. Evie and Sakev are sent on a mission which might just be able to help!
This book introduces some new characters, a few new twists to the background story, and some important information. That being said, the final couple of chapters of the book seem to be somewhat flipped... in that the final “Evie” chapter should really be read right after the Sakev chapter ending with Evie saying they need to get back to the Vengeance. It *can* be read as is, but trust me, it would be better the other way! It was a little confusing in my edition!
This series is an entertaining and enjoyable one. Each book, with a different romance, is part of an ongoing storyline, a continuity that requires you to read the books in the order given, and it’s worth it. The war being fought by the humans and aliens is life threatening. The sense of oppression and near futility is balance only by the happiness of the romance. You can’t help but want the absolute extermination of the Xathi, and hope for a good resolution.
Recommended for those who enjoy their sci-fi stories on the epic scale (which as a series this *is*), and their romances with an alien love interest!
Originally from Fraga, Dr Evangeline Parr (Evie) lost everything when the Xathi attacked, so when she is asked to establish a new clinic in Einhiv she immediately says she will help. However, she has to have smartass and constantly joking Skotan warrior Sakev with her. That view changes when they are in a new explosive situation when she sees a protective and efficient side to him that intrigues her. Sakev joined the Skotan fleet after an unusual career which has relegated his past to the background as the fight against the Xathi has intensified. What he never expected was for a human to break through his constructed facade and as things adapt and change keeping Evie safe becomes far more than just another mission - it instead becomes the only mission he cares about.
I really enjoyed the surly joker of Sakev and how he suddenly found he had to adjust his thinking and priorities as the fireworks between him and Evie morphed from just disagreements on approach/results and became something far more personal between them. I loved the way he then became dogged in his determination to protect her at all costs to himself. He was heartened to see that he had adapted into something more like a partnership and real affection as it was obvious at the start that they both irritated each other. Easy to read and understand. Contains explicit sexual content.
Well this was different. There was a forward motion to the storyline that gave us a glimpse into defeating the enemy, but still so far away. Evie was an unknown h and as it turns out, seems to be a brilliant match for the almost annoying Sakev. His humour was a nice touch of breathing space but for me was annoying as well. I think I'd have to say, so far, although it introduces another asset, this is the least book ove liked so far. Elin has shown me a different tone to her writing with a slice of dry humour mixed with some simple wit. Although there isnt as much fast pace and fight scenes as in previous books, this plot took an internal twist and showed a different vulnerability to one of our own. This H's history is masked with his humour which can quite easily parallel with individuals today. Such a different angle and chapter to this exciting saga. Thanks again to Piers for bringing everyone to life.
Let me start off by saying that this book has a truly unique plot. In 2000 books, I’ve read in my lifetime, I’ve never read anything like it. Having said that, most of the books did not have a lot of plot development. They happened every few books or so. The couples would meet and fall in love within 2 to 3 days and suddenly they’re all life partners which I find extremely hard to believe and doesn’t allow you to get to know the characters as fully as You could/should. So I hope she works on that. This book set could’ve been so much more than it was. As I previously mentioned, the plot was unique, and I would have loved to see more of it In all of the books. My chapter review is below. Negative means little to no plot development and plus equals plot development. And the plus and minus mean there was a little bit of plot development, but not a lot. Are you confused?
- 1 to 8 + Book 9, 10, 11, 12 - book 13, 14 +15 +- book 16, 17 + book 18
I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.
You need to read the previous books in the series before you read this book.
Sakev took some time to warm up to, his impulsiveness comes across as a bit annoying at first but the more you understand of his background the more his attitude makes sense. Evie made a nice counter-point to him, she's a bit more serious but not stuffy. I liked the build-up to their romance, it a natural flow to it as they work together and develop a camaraderie.
The plot gives us more on the hybrids that are proving to be as big of a threat as the direct attacks by the Xathi. There is a bit of a twist in this story (don't want to spoil it!) that has me eagerly waiting for the next book to see where Elin is going to take this adventure next.
This is not, In my opinion, a stand-alone story. Half the time you’re trying to play catch-up and you can’t of course. Evie and Sakev are an interesting couple although, I have to say, I’d kill him at the first opportunity. Although the title of the book is Sakev the main protagonist is Evie. She is the one who was studying the hybrids. She is the one who proved to be too strong for the hive queen, and she is the one who made contact with Fen. The book is reasonably well written but I don’t have any desire to go back to the first book and catch up on what has happened. So, the book picks up where book three ended (obviously) and next year book 5 will maybe give readers some more information on the Xathi and how to defeat them.
Absolutely an outstanding Sci - Fi /romance . I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of SAKEV . I really enjoyed reading this story . It's full of action and suspense . The story is well written , a very interesting storyline . The entire series is fantastic . This is book 4 in Conquered World Series . This is Sakev a Skotan alien soldier and Dr. Evangeline Parr's (Evie) story . The story pulls you in from the start . It's a real page Turner . I'm looking forward to more of the series . I highly recommend this story if you enjoy a great Sci -Fi / romance . This is definitely A Must read .
Sakev has to be my favourite character in a while. He comes across as immature and very rarely, if ever, thinks things through before he acts which lands him and his team in danger. His commanding officer benches him but the doctor who treated him, Evie, has other ideas. His impulsiveness almost gets both him & Evie killed but luckily her diplomacy gets them out of trouble. But for these two the hits keep on coming and I really enjoyed their story. Plenty of action, mystery, a visit by the Xanthi Queen & a new species make for a thrilling read & I cannot wait for more.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Stories getting better. As well as ending, not just dropping it off. Loved the picnic like episodes. Enjoyed finding more of human hybrids. But I would call them infected humans. Did not buy the doctor or Warrior not knowing right away they were-infected . With previous books the other couples had enough info to share with all of them about characteristics and earning signs. Not to mention the communication between groups. Why is the author wishy washing between communication between settlers and seeming to be Stone Age? Too inconsistent and not logical. Now the new Auria survivors? Suddenly they are alive? Why did the scanners not find them?
Every time a new book comes out in the Conquered World series i say its my favorite. All four books are simply amazing and you cant go wrong reading any book by the talented Elin Wyn. Sakev is a prankster, jokester and snarky, but behind all that he hides a past that was filled with hardship. Dr Evie sees right through the red mans shenanigans and it looks like he has met his match. The beatiful docg9or brings out a side of Sakev that he never knew he had in him....he is protective, considerate and in love.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
I must say I look forward to each and every book that Elin Wyn puts out. The world-building is so complete and the characters are familiar, but unique. Just because they are from somewhere else, their thoughts, dreams and loves are something we all share. Sakev is the jokester that jumps before thinking things all the way through. Evie is the calm, thoughtfulness to ease the situation and make sense of things. This is a fantastic series and I recommend reading it from the beginning. I requested an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
I really enjoyed the stories and the characters, but I left a star off because the kindle version I read had abysmal proofreading. On top of that, the last full chapter before the epilogue had to be out of order. Also, during a couple of the romantic encounters it seemed like they were walking around all day dressed like Winnie the Pooh with shirts only and no pants because they started fondling with out removing any pants. But overall the characters and story were enjoyable for the overall arc of the series.
Aww, I loved Sakev so so much!!! Such a great story with lots of excitement. Evie is a sweetie but a spitfire at the same time and it takes that to keep Sakev in line. Sakev is headstrong and is one to react first and think later. I loved his flirtiness and tenderness towards Evie and I think they made a pretty good team despite not always agreeing on things. Sakev is an amazing book in an amazing series from an amazing author. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I started the series a while back and only read the first 2 books. Now that I have finished the 4th book. I am rolling right into book 5. I know that she says that these can be read as stand-alone books, but they are so much better reading one right after another. And I get see everyone from the other books and see how the relationship keep developing.
I had to make myself put my book down so I could get some sleep. They keep getting better and better.
I enjoyed this 4th book in the series. Dr. Evie had no idea what she was getting into on her fact finding mission. And Sakev was probably the wrong escort to send with her. But it worked out because they balanced each other and I think Sakev’s antics and impulsiveness were exactly what Evie needed when the Hive Queen came calling. Sakev played mind games with everyone so he basically armored Evie without knowing it. Loved it
The book was just as great as all the previous ones and holds your attention from beginning to end. It has everything you want in a romance about aliens with enough action, adventure, hostile alien insects, humor, passion, and steamy hot romance with awesome characters? A must buy and so ready to read the next book in the series.
I still really like this world but this book fell short for me. Yes it was funny but i didnt feel a real break out connection point between the two characters. I'll read the next but this pile isnt on the top of my list right now.
I enjoyed reading Evie and Sakev’s story and the struggles they went through trying to help the humans. I am also looking forward to what Fey will bring to future books.
These books keep your interest. Although the characters appear on each book , the addition of the new female and the new romantic developments make each great. The additional information on the alien enemy adds to the story developments.
Things are getting interesting. The number of human hybrids are increasing, but not at the same rate, and not all the same way. Is it an infection? How does it spread? A new species is introduced...the Ukri. Will they help? Can they help? So many questions....
This is a good book. I really like the doctors personality. She's smart and has a sense of humor. Sakev has an interesting personality. It's unlike the other aliens. I highly recommend reading this series.
This book started off well. I really liked that Evie could hold her own with Sakev. Their first encounter with each other is a hoot. But after awhile the book just became meh to me. I still liked it overall but I enjoyed the beginning much more than the end.
The aliens just keep getting creepier as this series progresses. Then, what about this new alien species? Friends? The best part is the sweet and spicy romances of these friendly aliens and the human women.
This was good for me. Sakev was an amazing character who uses humor to cope but can switch to his warrior abilities when is absolutely necessary!! The ending was off for me but I am just one person. And I am totally sure the next book will clear things up 🤞
I liked this story especially the H's character and I can not fault the book in any way but...I don't feel drawn in enough to continue with the standalone series.
