Phyllis Goodwin was born in Bath, England. At three months, she was taken to Argentina by her parents and lived there for twelve years. She came back to England in 1949. The memoir covers her childhood and early school years. At first the family lived in the outskirts of Buenos Aires in a place called Caseros. As an only child, she often felt lonely. Her best friend, Negrita, lived next door and she soon learned to chat in Spanish. Her mother worried that Phyllis may forget that English was her native tongue, so she arranged to take her regularly to see the Carters, an English couple. Also, she met their lodger, Mr. Wilkinson, who owned a motor car - not many people owned private cars in those days. He was an artist who painted in oils and water colours. He frightened Phyllis with his booming voice and stern appearance. It took a while for her to regain her confidence. The ups and downs of her life, included a stay at the British Hospital during a 'Polio' scare and she witnessed her mother's break down when the Second World War started. The Graf Spe, the German battle ship docked in Montevideo and her father disappeared for a while. She found solace with her Godparents, Auntie Ethel and Uncle Jack. Her best friend, after Negrita, was Whiskers, a mongrel dog. Her young days were full of drama, anxiety and love. She still believes that she had a charmed life in two countries!
