Born in a hut along the Victoria Nile River, to a mother who hates her from her first breath, with a name that means ‘trouble being born’, a little girl faces a life of suffering and drudgery. She cannot speak, her eyes are too watchful; her mother calls her retarded, even evil.

But the little girl has a gift. She helps the dying cross over in peace.

Her tranquil influence on those dying and those grieving, leads to a village decision to change her name. When she is named Mirembe, which means ‘peace and quiet’, only her mother refuses to accept it.

One day Mirembe’s life changes forever when a car arrives in the village, looking for her, looking for the girl able to ease the passing of those close to death. Frightened, she leaves her old life behind, and discovers the meaning of care and freedom … and her true calling.

She is Mirembe and she will help the living learn how to deal with grief, for in bereavement everyone needs the healing warmth of a friend. Mirembe highlights the lack of education surrounding bereavement in the western world. By example, she proves there is a holistic way to cope with grief and teaches others how to be a friend to those enduring their darkest time.

Death is a part of life. This is a story of hope and understanding, of life so precious.

This is Mirembe’s story.

I cannot stress how wonderful Mirembe is, not only as story, but as a character! I am so pleased Hannah Ferguson wrote this, for it is filled with life’s lessons and so much insight that I was almost overwhelmed. From humble beginnings, Mirembe teaches us how to accept death, but more than that, she reveals how important the grieving process is and how to deal with it, as well as how to be there for those going through bereavement.

Please read this. The story itself beautifully written, and the hope and understanding imbued in every situation fills the reader with that same hope and understanding. If you find yourself in the sadness of loss, read Mirembe. If you have a friend you are not sure how to approach in his or her grief, read this. Mirembe points you in the right direction.

Thank you for writing this.
