Euroopan suosituimpien sarjakuvien kärkijoukkoon kuuluva Thorgal on suuri saaga, jonka päähenkilö on kaukaa avaruudesta Maan kamaralle saapunut viikinkisankari.
Mustanaamio-lehden sivuilta suomalaisille lukijoille tuttu Thorgal on puolalaissyntyisen sarjakuvapiirtäjä Grzegorz Rosinskin ja belgialaisen huippukäsikirjoittaja Jean Van Hammen eeppinen suurteos. Vuonna 1977 Tintin-lehdessä alkanut sarja yhdistelee fantasiaa, scifiä, seikkailua ja huumoria. Thorgalia on ilmestynyt jo 35 osaa ja myyty eri kielillä yli 14 miljoonaa kappaletta. Sarjakuva on Tintin jälkeen suosituin belgialainen sarjakuva. Siitä on tekeillä elokuvaversio, jonka ohjaa Muiden elämä -elokuvallaan Oscarin voittanut Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
Story-telling was passable but not super fleshed out (this album is composed of several vignettes). Art was nice, old-school, some lovely compositions, creative paneling and I like the linework. You kind of have to like this style though, maybe some would find it dated but I like it. Looking forward to reading more in this series to get a better feel for what this is about.
Although the story starts in media res, and can be a bit hard to follow in the beginning for that reason, it solves itself quickly in the usual style of self-contained vignettes, and ends up being interesting the longer it gets. It's fantasy, but not overwhelmingly so, in the sense that the impression of "real history" is kept throughout, and we're barely made to recall this isn't all pure history. I think I'm going to like this, although I have the feeling the magic will increase in later volumes because of how this first one ended.
I liked Thorgal, very mysterious Viking, this one. And looking at him, he doesn't have a typical Northern appearance but would fit better amongs Southern Europeans. I'm wondering where he is from, because nobody knows whence he came and he has no patronymic nor known place of birth. Instead, he's called Aegirsson, son of the Aegir, the elements. Is he supposed to be divine, as in the child of some god and a mortal or a plain god that somehow ended in Midgard by meddling from some other mortal when he was a baby? Gods know, I'm really curious.
And lastly, the art! Polish artist Grzegorz Rosinski is one of the best artists out there, whatever he does will be impressive, and fortunately for his fans (me amongst them), he's always paired up with excellent scriptwriters! Thank Odin for that. And this old-school style has for once been beautifully coloured as well.
Time to plug this shameful gap in my sword & sorcery knowledge as a comic book lover and a Belgian: Thorgal! I can finally hold my head high as a patriot...
Originally a one-off in Tintin magazine (of course, everything flows forth from Tintin) in 1977, its success led to an ongoing with multiple spin-offs, some of which still run to this day.
Thorgal is a bastard who dared to love a chieftain's daughter and is left to drown chained to a lonely obelisk. A one-eyed sorceress rescues him, but demands a year's servitude in payment.
You can tell this was an episodic 30-pager as there's basically a cliffhanger every couple pages (and the short-burst adventures are sometimes hilariously resolved - thanks Sharn the wolf!) and a 16 page back-up story about Thorgal getting stuck in a treacherous Eden to round things out to a full-volume 46 pages.
Rosinski's artwork is breathtaking, so honestly I won't complain about stuff I give Burroughs and Moorcock a pass for.
V funny that the mean chieftain is called "Gandalf le fou"; pop culture references just didn't need to be deep cuts at all in the 70s, I guess! Also v funny that beloved Aaricia is just straight up Brigitte Bardot.
Of course this is essentially a proof-of-concept/pilot ep, but Thorgal himself is a bit of a boring do-gooder so far. I'm also squinting at things being a little PG in terms of the violence and boobery, but I guess that's what a publication in Tintin'll get ya.
Let's see where the series takes it once they develop their own identity, cuz this was a fun start.
I've always wanted to try Thorgal and it did not disappoint. On some level it's a very simple story, but I like the exploration of morality based in no way on the Christian one with one's word, honour, blood fraternity being tested especially against each other. The other story in the volume I've read was even more straightforward but very bittersweet in a way I enjoyed.
This comic book series seriously defined my taste in comics and books, and I guess, life in general. Great concept and execution of mixing viking methodology and space travel. Returning to it now, I ordered the last one in this series.
