My parents promised my soul to a god. But he wants my heart instead.
I’ve felt him. My whole life, I’ve felt him.
That touch on the back of my neck in an empty room. That sound on the wind of someone saying my name. That sinking feeling of eyes watching me in the dark.
I told myself I was crazy. It was just nerves. My imagination playing tricks.
But he was there. Watching. Listening. Waiting.
Until now.

USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Tabatha Kiss is from Chicago, Illinois.
You can probably catch her huddled up in a hoodie, reading a good romance beneath a tree with her trusty husky by her side. She enjoys roller derby, sushi, and is always searching for her forever bad boy.
“Fall with me, Tannis. I promise the world will catch you.”
4.5 Eternal Stars!
This is one of those rarities that I came across totally by chance. After reading Lovers by Fiona Cole and discovering it was originally part of a multi-author series called Cards of Love, I went down the rabbit hole to discover what I could be missing out on from this series.....I saw one of my newly favorited authors and knew I needed to read this one. I’m not a fan of anything paranormal in romance (not since Twilight at least). But for Tabatha, I was willing to take a chance.
That chance definitely paid off. This book is on the shorter side BUT it told a unique and fascinating story that I can truly say I’ve never experienced before. A heroine who has been promised to a God since the day she was born? It could have gone so incredibly cheesy, but Tabatha was able to spin a tale that had just the right paranormal element without taking it to “wtf is this” territory. I loved Ari, I loved Tannis, and I loved the twist that I honestly didn’t see coming.
Book Facts: Told in: Dual POV, all present. About: In this paranormal-style stand-alone romance, Tannis is just an ordinary 19 year old with overprotective parents and a nonexistent love life. A card reading that was meant to be fun ends with a warning to go home to her parents, Tannis also has no idea that it will set off events that will put her face to face with a God she has been promised to since the day she was born. Ari is the God of Death and he is here to collect her soul, but he wants her heart instead. Three dates to win her over, three chances to make her his forever. Tannis is determined to be strong, but does she stand a chance against a God? Safe Read? Yes, no dark elements or triggering situations. Ends in: HEA ending with extended epilogue.
My Thoughts: As I said before, I am not a typical fan of paranormal. I prefer my romance to feel like it could be a possibility in real life. As much as I wished sexy vampires existed back in my teen/young adult years I just don’t see it happening now. With that said, this intrigued me because of the concept involving a God and a mortal. That is hot anyway you look at it. Not to mention she made it as realistic as something seemingly so unrealistic could be. IF this kind of stuff existed this would feel as close to the reality of it as anything else. I loved the fact that while this book was short, she was able to tell a complete story in that page count. I think my favorite thing about the plot line was the fact that she didn’t create any unnecessary drama or involve a bunch of side characters or side plots to drag it out. What you get is a focused romance about these two characters and how they come together.
As for the characters.....if you come into this book expecting a dark and irredeemable antihero you are in for a surprise, Ari is so sweet and caring that I was shocked I didn’t hate it (I’m a sucker for the mean ones). But with Ari it just made him that much more amazing. Tabatha presented him a way that made it clear just how powerful and dangerous he was BUT also gave him these human qualities and emotions that made it easy to sympathize with him. I honestly expected to not like Tannis after their first encounter early on in the book, but she grew on me as Ari grew on her. I loved that despite her being forced into this “deal” she kept an open mind and an open heart, committing to the potential of a future by a God’s side.
But my favorite thing about the story itself is how enchanting the world Tabatha creates within it is. The way Ari’s “home” is described and set up and how he operates as the God of Death were completely fascinating and unique. And how he came to be what he is, how what he does affects him, and what happens to the dead were all aspects of the story that gave it this extra special element that made me want to stay buried in this book.
As I said before, this does end in a HEA but not before a twist you won’t see coming is revealed...... ......it only adds to the amazing-ness of this book.
My Verdict: This was a complete awesome surprise for me and I can easily encourage anyone to give it the chance it deserves. It is less than 200 pages so it’s a quick read, and it’s one that is enjoyable and worth the energy. Just read it, I promise it’s not a dud.
“I have always been his queen. Ari extends his hand to me. And I take it.”
Wow, this story is amazing. Tannis and Ari's story is one that will have you wondering about things in the afterlife. I couldn't devour this book quick enough. Ari is a death god that has been watching over Tannis her entire life. Actually he was there in the delivery room when she didn't take her first breathe and her parents were praying for her to live. He granted them her life but when she turned twenty there had to be a soul given to him. Her parents were overjoyed to have her live and be happy but the day Tannis was accidentally pushed into the road in front of a moving car and Ari saved her is her parent's worst nightmare. They knew when they saw him on the porch with Tannis that the time was getting near because it was three days until her twentieth birthday. What were they going to do, how would they live without her?! Tannis overheard her parents talking one morning and she was confused but she knew she had seen Ari before when she was nine and had been sick with a terrible fever for a week. Aris appeared and touched her on the forehead and her fever was gone. Things didn't make sense so she started questioning Ari about what she had heard and him healing her when she was a child. Ari confessed to being a death god and that he wanted her to be his queen. Was this guy serious, surely not. Ari convinced Tannis to grant him three dates and after each date she had to kiss him and if she still wasn't convinced then she could live her life. She was sure she could do this but Ari made things extremely hard for her. Can she do it, you have to read to find out. Love, love this book.
What a mystical and beautiful paranormal novella by Tabatha Kiss that will leave readers wondering... Tannis and Ari's love story is 1 that will have readers wondering about things in life and after. I couldn't finish this book fast enough, that's now delicious this novella is. Ari is a death god that has been watching over Tannis her whole life....he was actually in the delivery room when she came out not breathing, hearing her parents praying for her to live. Tannis ends up granting the parents wish but when she turned twenty there had to be a soul given to him. Her parents were completely shocked and just extremely happy to have her alive, well and happy ; as the years moved on, Tannis is a lovely young lady, beautiful and sweet- a joy to her parents but the day Tannis was accidentally pushed into the road in front of a moving car and then Ari saved her life is the moment her parent's worst nightmare comes back to life. Tannis doesn't understand the hidden currents in the air. To Tannis, Ari feels so familiar yet not. There is this sizzling chemistry between them and boy, do the sparks fly. Ari is ready for Tannis and what she represents but Tannis doesn't understand the deal her parents made with Ari when she was a baby and oh my, what she goes through....the emotional turmoil, the angst and heartache in order to accept what already is to find true love and happiness with Ari. Ari and Tannis's story is full of heat, sizzle and paranormal romance. You dont want to miss out on this.
Read in one sitting. Sensual and engaging. Well-paced and definitely a page-turner. The premise is perfect. I loved the gentleness and sincere love Ari had for Tannis even from her childhood. I also love how Tannis challenges him every time. She wasn't going to be wooed by fancy overnight trips and promises of the world. Loved this one. I was sick in bed with pneumonia on a sleepless night, and read this in three hours.
This was an interesting addition to The Cards of Love collaboration. It was unique and different, intriguing and beautiful. You could not help but love Ari and the chemistry between them was breathtaking. I loved the authors take on Death and what his job is, basically everything. I really enjoyed this story. It was short, but covered all the important things and did the tale justice with every page. No wasted words. Another five star read by Tabatha Kiss, well done.
The story was very interesting and there was a mystery added to it. This was a page-turner but I felt that it could've used more details. The premise was there, the setting was there, the elements were there but I wanted more details and there was a gap between the last chapter and the epilogue.
Since this is the author's first paranormal romance, it's very promising and it could be a start to a new series, a spin-off of a sort.
What an enticing story. What would you say if the God of Death wanted to court you? I'd say it's pretty scary, but this dashing, dark-eyed, powerful creature is quite persuasive .
The opening chapter grabbed my attention with its mystery, and it's followed by an intensely seductive dance of wills. The lady he's after is no meek kitten and doesn’t give in, even though her surrender might seem forfeit. I loved her pertinent questions and misgivings. Both the plot and the steamy scenes are captivating.
They go on little adventures that end in exhilarating ways, full of excitement and wonder and disturbing truths. I enjoyed the mythological male character, the arousing passion and the satisfying though bittersweet choices at the end. Good writing, too.
This book had so much potential. I love reinterpreted myths and legends and so forth, and this one was kinda-sorta a retelling of the Persephone myth. Except with, you know, dating and not just carrying her off. So, already promising.
Unfortunately, it just never lived up to the promise.
The pacing is slow, which isn't bad, except that this all still takes place in about 3 days (plus an epilogue). So, it's a slowly paced insta-love? I did like that she didn't just see him and swoon, but did get angry and upset about all of this. However, it'd take me a bit longer than a day to sort through that many emotions. It still boils down to three days to decide, "Ok, I'll die and spend eternity with you." Kinda a weird feeling, when you step back.
The most irritating thing for me was the attention to details. Or rather, the lack of. She's in school, right? But it's November, and there's no mention of classes, exams, or even being on Fall break. But she's made a big deal about going away to school or not, and how it caused friction with her parents, etc. Yet it's never mentioned in all the events of the story? Even if it was an offhand comment about being on Fall break, that would have sat better with me. Also, it starts at Halloween and occurs over the next few days (the whole 'being in November' thing again). Yet, she's wearing sandals and sundresses? She's in Ohio. It's not unusual for Ohio to have snow at Halloween. Same with the impromptu dinner in Paris. I live about 2 hrs from Paris, and no one is still wearing sandals and sundresses in November (you're looking at temps in the 40s F/ about 10 C). Again - attention to detail.
And the vocabulary. There were a lot of misused vocabulary terms - almost right words, or similar sounds, but not the right one for the phrase. It was really distracting for me. Things like how she could "see the wheels visually turning" in someone's mind. The correct word is visibly, not visually. Or how her mom tries 'to lull her out of her room'. No, you lull someone to sleep - you lure them out of their room. And so on.
Overall? Well, HEA and no cheating and not too long. Plus free on Kindle right now. I liked Ari - he isn't a dominating or annoyingly alpha H (so common in supernatural romances). Tannis is OK as an h, but the timeframe in which she works through some seriously significant life issues is too insta-love for my taste. The writing is smooth and slower-paced, which I did enjoy, but there were a lot of details that were jarringly inconsistent. Plus the incorrect vocabulary which was frequent enough to be frustrating. So, promising premise and storyline, and fairly likeable characters derailed by the distraction of too-quick pacing, shoddy details, and poor vocab.
This had a sweetness about it, yet it was more of a supernatural read. (I don't normally associate Supernatural/Paranormal with being 'sweet'.) He is a god, she a mere mortal, but she was destined to be his. She doesn't know what this powerful man see's in her, or why he would want to be with her, as she is mouse like. She has lived a fairly sheltered life due to her parents unwillingness to let her leave the nest (though they have their reasons, which she eventually finds out.) What does she have to offer this being. Despite how she feels about herself, or her place in the world, he is determined to win her heart and show her what she's capable of, and he has just three days to do it.
This is a pretty quick read and the story flows smoothly. It does have an insta-attraction, though that doesn't mean they immediately hook up. Because it is a slightly shorter book (under 200 pages,) it skips over some details, that, while not an important part in the grand scheme of things, felt like they were forgotten. One being her good friends (though we get to catch up with them in the epilogue.) They were a big part in the beginning of the story, then we don't hear anything about them until the end. I know things happened fast for her character, but it seemed like maybe she would have gone to them for advice or something. Other than that, it was a good story and even if you don't normally read supernatural type of books, you can enjoy this one... enjoy the romance of it. There is limited sexual content, but what there is, is pretty hot.
Where do I begin...so first, I didn't even think this book was going to be paranormal. I went in blind. I'm a huge fan of Ms. Tabatha Kiss so I didn't think twice about reading it. I can honestly say I was not disappointed!!! It all starts with Tannis going out with her friend Dina and Dina's boyfriend Riley. Dina takes them to see a psychic. Tannis doesn't believe in psychics but goes along anyways. But Tannis gets more than she wanted when the psychic reveals the cards of deception and death. Tannis is left confused after the reading, not knowing that soon everything would make sense. Out of nowhere a stranger saves Tannis from almost getting run over. His name is Ari and even though Tannis was sure she hadn't seen him before, he looks very familiar. Tannis's mother acts very strange when she sees Ari and leaves Tannis even more confused. But everything comes to light the next day after Tannis hears a weird conversation between her parents. This is when her life suddenly changes. Tannis finds out her parents made a deal with Death himself after she almost died at birth. Who is Death? Ari. And now Ari wants what is owed to him. But what do you give Death? A life. The epilogue broke me. I cried!😭 everyone needs someone to love...even Death❤ ❤I received a copy of this book as a gift❤
Not going to lie, I went into this book a bit skeptical if this would be in the wheelhouse of my fictional love, but being that it was written by Tabatha Kiss, I had to give it a go!
I. AM. SO. FREAKING. GLAD. I DID.
Tannis and Ari's story opened my mind to a whole new realm of possibilities and had me enthralled with the passionate, heartfelt characters, and their animal magnetism! Hooked from the very start on the twisted emotional heart heavy journey this fast-paced, jam-packed storyline had such a layer of heat right under the surface it heightened the appeal while increasing my curiosity over one Godly King character.. woo.. can I have some water, please! Who knew I would be fanning my self over a man of the underworld! Ha! Hot, alpha with a side of sweet and twisty. It may not be all of this world, but at the heart of it all, it is all about the man who is longing for his Queen to make his life in his world complete and the lengths he will go to make that happen.
Stellar book! I was crazy to be skeptical to begin reading it, by the last page I did not want it to end!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. WOW! I’ve been excited for this book and it did not disappoint. What do you do when you find out that your life as you know has been a lie? That you are not going to be fulfilling your wishes and dreams? That when you were born your life was promised to another and your clock is ticking. When Tannis learns her fate, she is dumbfounded and intrigued by Ari who has come to collect her, but how can this be? Why does she feel a connection, and heat between them when they just met? What kind of power does he have over her? Or is it the other way around? An agreement is set in place, three days for her to decide if he’s worthy of her. Ari has been with her, her whole life, she just wasn’t aware, but always felt like someone was looking out for her. Will Ari pass the test for Tannis to feel he’s worthy? So much steam, passion, emotions, the fight to keep what you have, but the desire to be something else. Amazing book, love this author so I purchased the book as well. I highly recommend this book, you won’t be able to put it down.
How do you begin to understand something that can’t be understood in this plain?
Tannis has felt Ari her entire life. A shadow of something she has yet to understand, but he’s been there waiting and helping her and most importantly making sure she stays alive. Until on Halloween Night she meets him face to face and once again it was close to death as she’s ever been. The simple realization that she’s seen him and met him before is startling and time is essentially up.
But time on earth is measured on a clock while time in Ari’s world is works differently, but the outcome is the same no matter what the cards say. Death will come it’s only up to Tannis if she accepts the terms and conditions and Ari has 3 days to prove he’s worthy of her because how is a King supposed to live without his Queen!
The only way I can describe Death is as beautiful.....it really was Ari was just so completely gentlemanly and he always held true to his word. He didn’t lie and all he wanted was her happiness and that is so deeply and completely beautiful to me.
Disclaimer I received an arc copy for an honest and voluntary review.
I have to admit that I read the blurbs for the other Cards of Love books and I wasn't really interested but this one just grabbed my attention. I wasn't really prepared for this book and started it during a break at work but found that I could not put it down - thankfully, it's not that long and I have flexible hours at work. Dang, what a ride. Tannis's parents have kept a major secret from her for her entire life and when it is revealed, it turns her whole existence topsy turvy and throws her into an emotional tailspin. I felt every single one of her emotions as she was thrust onto this fantastic roller coaster ride. Ari is just as awesome and will squeeze your heartstrings almost as much as Tannis. The question at the end of chapter 14 will freakin' blow your mind.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author but immediately purchased it as I need to help support this author so that she may bring us many more great books like this one. I have my fingers crossed that she will write more books in this genre.
Wow what a unique storyline and a beautifully heartfelt love story about Ari the king god of death and Tannis, a human promised as a companion at her birth by her parents. This story will open your eyes to all the possibilities outside what we normally think, the passion and connection of these two beautiful souls. Tannis has lived a sheltered life and her parents are very protective of her knowing what they promised the god of the underworld. Ari is one sexy alpha god who lives to help Tannis see him for what he really is and to even love him as he has had 20 years to fall in love with her. Tannis is not happy with the changes that occur over night and her life is turned upside down. I loved how understanding Ari is and how he agrees to 3 dates with Tannis to show her his life and hope she becomes his queen. Tannis is given a choice and how she comes to a decision is one special story! I really fell for these characters and all this story shows about the after life. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
It amazes me with what some authors can come up with and write, telling a story that captures you from beginning to end. This story tops it all, not my normal read with PNR, I’m assuming that’s what it is, but holy smokes, even with other worldly happenings, the emotions are all still there, making me wonder, can any of this really happen. Ari is the god of death and has come to collect his queen after waiting 20 years to be with her. Tannis has no idea of the deal her parents made with Ari when she was a baby and goes through emotional turmoil to accept what is to be. The descriptions are so vivid as is Ari, I could easily picture him in my head and hear his gentle voice, see his soft smile, feel the burden he carries on his shoulder, the loneliness of his existence and the grand love he has for Tannis as he watches over her and helps her accept her fate. There were tears, sad and happy and makes me wish that an Ari does exist and that this story could be real....somewhere....holy smokes!!! *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I really enjoyed reading this fascinating & unique paranormal romance, it grabbed my attention and kept it until the last page was turned. The plot is impressive, well-thought out, and written. The characters are well-developed with individual personalities and they are quite realistic with their emotional feelings & expectations. It is about: a young woman (Tannis) who almost died at birth, but her parents made a deal with a death god (Aristo aka Ari) now he has come to claim her. There is: friends, friendship, a psychic, a death god, intrigue, twists & turns, secrets, warnings, memories, confusion, sarcasm, curiosity, destiny, denial, an offer/deal, frustration, realization, sadness, guilt, surprises, confidence, vivid dreams, confrontations, unexplained forces, attraction, teasing, choices, loneliness, doubts, acceptance, trust, love & some steam. I really would recommend this paranormal romance.
It is a very interesting question to ponder.... are our souls our own to do with as we see fit, meaning to live your life however YOU choose to live it, or is that decision already made for you, and simply resign yourself to that fate? That is the very decision that our heroine Tannis must make. She discovers that her soul has been promised to Ari, her guardian angel by her parents at birth. Will she allow Ari to take her soul? Will she voluntarily surrender it? What is the price to be paid if she does? You feel every emotional moment with Tannis and Ari... the incredible highs, the terrible lows, the lingering doubts and questions inbetween. Tabatha takes you to a new realm and makes you ask questions that maybe you've never asked before... or maybe you had. Like everything else Tabatha has written, this story will pull at your heartstrings... make you laugh, make you cry, make you question .... how awesome is that!
4.25 stars I relish reading books from this author because of her witty writing style and have read most of her collection. This was a little different from what I have become accustomed to. It took a little to get into the storyline as it did not seem to flow as seemingly as her other works. However, Tannis and Ari are two characters that are definitely unforgettable. Ari was tasked with watching over Tannis since she was a young girl due to a pact that he made with her parents. Tannis grew up thinking she had the world at her feet….and she does just not in the way she expected. Can Tannis make peace with her newfound life or will she make another choice? Will Ari be able to move on if he cannot have Tannis? This is one emotional rollercoaster of a ride that leads the reader on a journey to see beneath the surface to one’s true intentions and heart. I volunteered to read an advance copy of this book.
Let me start by saying I'm not a big fan of paranormal stories, but Tabatha Kiss did her thing and I loved this book. Cards of Love: Death is dark, sad, hopeful and romantic and rolled into one story. The biggest thing it did for me is make me ask the question where do we go when we die? In my opinion Tabatha Kiss answered the question for herself but not so much for me. I think this is something we all have to come to terms with yourselves. I liked Tannis and the fact she did not just accept what Ari was saying and made him work for it. This is an instant love, yet it wasn't, in my opinion this is a very interesting story. In my opinion this is an intriguing story. In my opinion Tabatha Kiss did a good job with this story, this is not her typical genre. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy.
This was a different and interesting read! I liked the story and the characters. Tannis is out on Halloween with her friends who drag her into a tarot card reading. The card death shows up. Tannis doesn't believe in it but it still freaks her out some. In comes Ari, to save her from almost being run over. Ari is definitely more than he seems and there is more going on as well. I loved how Ari worked with Tannis considering the situation. I thought that the story was well written and it flowed well. It had a good pace for it. The story is on the shorter side but it worked with the premise of the story. There is a lot of sexual chemistry and tension but not a lot of sex. There's definitely some making out and rounding third base though lol. It was all done well and everything blended together. Overall, I enjoyed the story and the characters. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Ari and Tannis prove that when it fated their is escaping destiny. Tannis was never supposed to make it past the few fleeting moments on earth after her birth, but the pleas and prayers her parents frantically sent up that day didn’t fall on deaf ears. Ari heard their woeful cries and granted their wish with one solitary stipulation, when she turns 20 a soul is owned to him. So Tannis blissfully lives an ignorant life that is watched from afar by a man that grows increasing infatuated with her. When a fateful accident one day is avertered by a stranger that had this pull over Tannis she is not sure what to make of it. Ari has this aura around him that draws her to him. But once she learns of the truth and all that it entails, Tannis is crushed. Can she truly fall for the man that is here to claim her soul?
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book
Tabatha Kiss infuses magic in this wonderfully romantic novella about a woman whose life is destined for a greater purpose. Shy, reserved twenty-year old Tannis is thinking odd things are happening to her. Her over-protective parents have a secret to reveal that will change her life forever.
Ari is a death god whose immortal destiny is a lonely one. Fate stepped in his path to offer him love and give him a companion. But first Ari has a tough job to gently convince Tannis she is his mate. Will Ari succeed in his seduction of Tannis and win her affections? I love that Ari’s character is so patient and nurturing. He’s loved Tannis since she was born, but pushing her too fast might scare her away. Wonderful story that had my heart pounding for these two! I voluntarily received and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
If you are a fan of paranormal books, you will love this one.
Ari and Tannis have met many times in Tannis's life though she doesn't remember most of them. After a freak almost accident, she sees him again. She doesn't know who he is but yet he feels familiar somehow. A deal was made when Tannis was born and started her on a path that she didn't know she was on.
I really liked this book. It made me question things that if this had happened to me, would I have made the same choice that individuals in this book did.
I loved reading about the complete devotion that Ari had towards Tannis. This could have been written very creepy but the author wrote it in a way that is was very romantic.
Like every other Tabatha Kiss book, I couldn’t wait to start reading this one after reading the blurb especially with having paranormal elements in the story. I loved Tannis and Ari together. I just wished it was a longer book! I would have loved to get to know these two characters over time and see their relationship develop slowly. But nonetheless I still loved reading this short, quick and hot story. I loved how mysterious Ari was, I had so many questions about him, I needed to know more! I absolutely loved getting inside Ari’s head at the end, it was great knowing what he goes through every day, how he overcomes it and the thoughts he has. It was easy to love these characters right from the beginning, including all the side characters. A very good and enjoyable read 4.5 stars
It's been a very long time since my last PNR/supernatural read (think the Twilight days). Tabatha Kiss doesn't disappoint with Ari and Tannis' story. Ari is the god of death and has watched Tannis since birth. She stopped breathing when she was born and her parents made a deal with the "grim reaper" to give her a day to live. Ari gave them 20 years and has returned to retrieve the soul he was promised. The day Tannis meets Ari, he saves her from a fatal car accident. Their attraction is instant and Tannis leaves Ari feeling as though he is familiar.
Their story takes on from there. Cards of Love: Death was a short, sweet read! I loved both characters and the story flowed easily from one page to another. I think I've been hooked again on PNR romance after this book!
