A rogue mage. An alien invasion. What could go wrong?
Dacre Avvalon is tired of running from the Alliance. He has no choice but to fight back, even if that means forging a tenuous alliance with the terrorist race known as the Jackals.
After being kicked out of the Mage Academy, Verity Toya wants nothing more than to earn her spot back. But what if the only way is turning bounty hunter on her ex-fiance in a deadly manhunt that will put her and her closest allies in mortal danger?
Oh yeah, not to mention the impending alien invasion that will destroy the entire galaxy and send them all into the Void. No pressure.

I FINALLY have a new book out! I had a ton of fun writing this romp through space that includes rogue mages, alien invaders, a cat pilot, monsters with many mouths, and all kinds of other fun stuff :) Happy reading!
David Estes always manages to surprise me with the fact that he can write amazing novels in almost any genre. I first discovered him from his Dweller and Country series, which were dystopian and pretty epic. The audiobooks even won a SOVAS award! Then along came a series about a witch apocalypse. Then one of my favorite series was the sci-fi series Slip. His next series was another HUGE epic series and this one was high fantasy and once again JUST won the 2018 SOVAS Award for Audiobook Narration - Teens, Best Voiceover for the audiobook with Derek Perkins as narrator.
And here we are again. Now David has tackled a space opera with his newest series starting with Star-Born Mage! I liken this new series to Star Wars meets Guardians of the Galaxy meets Firefly. And once again, he's created a brilliant new universe so vastly different from anything else he's done.
This man is a writing machine and as long as he puts out new books, I will continue to read every page he writes!
David Estes has done it again! This book was totally awesome! The worldbuilding - or, more accurately, universebuilding - is fantastic, the characters are well-rounded and interesting, and the plot moves at a nice pace. This story will grab you from page one, and hold you captive until the end, while taking you on an emotional rollercoaster, and filling your mind with amazing descriptions that will have you feeling as if you're right there with the characters.
Extremely good book. Magic and sci-fi blended to perfection. The world building has just the right balance for me. Enough to engage you and invest you in the world, and not so much detail as to start boring you. Similarly with the characters, no mass info dump, their back stories are just enough and are naturally revealed as appropriate during the story not enmass at the beginning. Personally i was impressed with the balance of the book and got drawn into the story quite easily. Through out the entire book there was only one thing that bugged me and its really minor. In an advanced technology setting with space travel, advanced magical weapons the space ships are flown with ropes!!! Being different for the sake of being different doesnt always work. Why on earth would an advanced starship be piloted by ropes? I also found one character, a late addition in the book, too seem out of character, the major criminal coffee. How ever i suspect that book 2 will reveal more about him and explain his true motivations which at the moment are just none existant. Over all a good book that i do recommend you read.
I thought this story was amazing. I LOVED the characters and fantastic story line. I am definitely looking forward to continue the rest of this series. As I've said before, I've never read a book by David Estes that I didn't instantly fall in love with. When I get in a reading slump, his books always reignite my passion for reading. Thanks David!
This book has great character development. You keep reading to see how they evolve throughout the book. This is epic fantasy combined with good old action drama. I look forward to see where these Chronicles are heading.
David Estes has begun a new series, The Godstar Chronicles, with a dynamic blockbuster filled with alien races and lots of action. Can't wait for the next book!
The author did an exceptional job with the world-building, creating a universe where faith, alien races, magic, and science all coexist. I wish - but only because it's my personal bent - that there had been more of a focus on the spiritual beliefs of the protagonists (especially differences in how the races framed their spiritual beliefs), but I understand why that wasn't really explored.
The character development is also very well executed. Most of the characters are interesting to read and are generally well fleshed out. I think greater attention to the Jackal characters would have enriched the novel. I also feel that there were a couple of minor characters (who are likely to play larger roles in future installments) that were very cursorily developed. For the pacing to remain consistent, this was a necessary sacrifice, however, I think having more of an understanding of them would have made a big difference. I also found that one of the major players was lacking for me - again, I can see that there is an opening for greater development down the line. Still, I found that this character just didn't resonate with me - I think the instinct to obfuscate their motivations was good, but I think it could have been more deftly executed and revealed more of the character without spoiling their role in the story.
The pacing of the story was very tight. The reader learns enough to have a sense of how the universe works without being bogged down in techspeak. There's a lot of action, and the action sequences are particularly strongly written.
All in all, this was a great romp and I'm really looking forward to reading more from this universe.
an interesting and intriguing read. A complex book with different personalities. Vee a mage who was thrown out of the mage acadamy and has job as security. At a beauty pageant Jackal terrorists Interrupt it and Vee is shot with a Aura dart but she is the few humans who are not effected by it but must take Aura for the rest of her life. Another mage Miranda whom Vee cannot stand due to a Situation with her ex Dacre Avvvalon offers Vee lifelong aura if Vee helps her captufre Dacre. Dacre is also a mage and is one of the most wanted persons in the universe. He has his own Agenda but still has feelings for Vee. It turns out that both Dacre and Miranda are Centarians and are advance Scouts. Enough Action to Keep a person awake with plenty of surprises.
I haven’t had much enjoyment in Space Opera books previously but I really enjoy David Este’s writing so thought I would give Star-Born Mage a go. I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed the magical aspect merging with the sci-fi. The story is told in alternating view points of Vee and Dacre, and I loved how they were being merged together. Plenty of action and many different alien species. You never can really tell who are the ‘good guys’ and who are the ‘baddies’. Lots of twists and turns. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Another very good book from David Estes ! The plot is interesting, the writing funny and the characters are evolving, they don't get stuck with one way of thinking or reacting to the different things happenning to them. I'm waiting for the other books now because at the end of this one we are left with a lot of changes... I quite like Terry and I hope to see more of him, he's the one I'm best picturing in my mind.
This was my kind of novel! It had magic (with a strange system), alien races, approaching doom for an entire galaxy and a bit of a love story. I highly recommend this book.
