Sometimes it is revealing to take out an almost disintegrating children's book and read it with you teenage children.

That is precisely what we did today, one of my sons, my daughter, and myself. According to the dedication, I bought this book for my two sons in 2005, before my daughter was born, and when they were 2.5 and 1 years old.

According to the predominantly cello-taped pages, we read it A LOT! According to the stains on each page, we had a snack while doing so.

So far, so good. My son, now a tall 13-year-old, immediately claims it is boring, but lingers in the room while I read to my daughter.

"SO SILLY", he laughs, when Mamma Mu, a somewhat adventurous and unconventional cow, gets inspired to build a tree house like the children on the farm.

The Crow, Mamma Mu's arrogant and condescending friend, thinks the same. He is actually allergic to cows using hammers! He gets a RASH from it!

"Repeat after me, Mamma Mu!" He says, very slowly and clearly. "I. Am. A. Cow. Cows. Don't. Build. Tree houses."

But luckily, Mamma Muh trusts her own exploring nature more than her discouraging friend and his sarcastic comments ("You missed! You missed again!"), and in the end, she has a beautiful tree house. When she is about to leave it, as she is done with her challenge, the Crow gets into a state again.

"You can't leave now. You don't build to build. You build to have!"

But the process of trying out things is always more important to Mamma Mu than the end result, and she is content, even though the Crow claims that her tree house is less than perfect. In her quiet way, manipulating his rage, she manages to inspire him to build a tree house of his own. And now the Crow can live out all his competitiveness, using special tools, all at the same time, constructing a majestic Crow's Castle.

And in the end, he also realises that doing is more rewarding than owning. Not that he would admit it. No. That's not in his nature.

My daughter and son giggled their way through the story, and I had a great trip down memory lane. And I also learned something about the process of developing humour. When my daughter stood up to disappear into her own universe again, she turned around and said:

"I didn't remember that the Mamma Mu books (there are plenty of them...) are so funny! It was just an adventure, nothing to laugh at. But the Crow is HILARIOUS!"

I gather that she now knows real life examples of the bragging type that the Crow is modelled on, and can relate to his silly rage. When she was little, it was all about building the tree house without bending the nails too much, despite having to use your tail ... Now it is all about discovering personalities and characters. That's how the story goes, I guess. I am a step further still: for me, it is all about stealing a moment or two and relive the bliss of the early days with the kids, happily aware at the same time that I will have a full night's sleep now!

It is all about the process of living your life fully all the time, and believing that you can do anything. That was what Milo learned in The Phantom Tollbooth as well.

Handlung
[Klappentext]
