How to Win the Science Fair When You're Dead

Rate this book
It's safe to say Happy Conklin Jr. is the only 10-year-old who accidentally sold his entire family to aliens. And he might have opened a black hole in the middle of class when trying to impress his lab partner. But now he faces the biggest threat of all--Grandma.

Hap's Grandma isn't like normal grandmas--she's trying to overthrow the Galactic Emperor to rule over all, and she thinks Hap is her perfect partner in crime. Hap knows he has to stop her to save the universe. But that's easier said than done, what with giant robots and the like coming after him, and he'll need the help of his family, friends, and some very unlikely allies to do it.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS – OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Happy Conklin Jr. is back in his third adventure. As the book opens, Hap is being held prisoner by his evil Grandma, who has plans to take over the universe and destroy Earth, and also has a terrible punishment planned for him. Hap knows he has to escape and thwart Grandma’s plan and save his sisters with the help of aliens and Squeep, his pet lizard who communicates through a brain-blending ring.

If this sounds like a lot going on, it is. Also, since this is the third in a series, read them in order or you will be totally lost. The plot was fun, but difficult to follow. The title didn’t even really fit the book, since the science fair is only in the last few-pages and Hap shows up abruptly whilst the science fair wasn’t mentioned previously in the book. The pictures are cool and help explain the story, though I still think it’s weird Hap has a beard. The title and cover will draw readers in, but the ride is convoluted.

Happy Conklin Jr. is in a battle to the death with his grandmother, something he never wanted to have happen. With the elderly woman trying to play both ends against the middle in her efforts to gain control over the galaxy, Happy and his siblings are her pawns in her efforts toward not just world, but universal domination. And really, all Happy wants to do is win the science fair. Fortunately for Happy, he has some help from Squeep! and a special ring that he steals from his grandmother. Anyone who enjoys aliens, monsters, odd situations such as being carried in a creature's mouth, or bathroom humor will find this book satisfying. It might be better enjoyed after reading the previous titles in this series, but readers who are new to the series can easily sort out what's happening without much trouble. While some pages are largely text, others feature comic strips, making reading the book a breeze. Every time I looked at ten-year-old Happy sporting a robust beard, I found myself laughing.

Happy Conklin Jr. wants something very simple: to save the Galactic Empire and Planet Earth from the clutches of his evil grandmother. The reader starts their journey immediately following the events of the previous novel, where Hap has just barely saved the universe from the accidental black hole he created while trying to impress his lab partner, Nev. Now, he must involve her, a Gibbins named Ack, and a lizard name Squeep! to help him in his endeavors.

If you haven’t read the two previous books in the series, How to Sell Your Family to the Aliens and How to Properly Dispose of Planet Earth, you may be a little lost, as not much background information is transferred to the most recent addition. However, this is a must-have if your library or personal collection has the first two. Young readers will be thrilled for the action-packed third in the series that heavily hints at more to come.

This third book in the series should only be read after the first two and is recommended for middle grade readers of science fiction. Though mishaps with alien creatures and futuristic inventions are entertaining, readers who are just joining the series will be fairly lost, as the text does not explain anything that happened in previous volumes. Still, readers who like adventure will be taken for a ride as Happy navigates the universe, on the run from creatures who want to capture him while also communicating with his friends and family on other planets via a ring. The text is often humorous, boosted by frequent pen-and-ink cartoon drawings that depict creatures and other plot points. An optional purchase that will be welcome where the rest of the series is popular.
