This is another installment in the Shadow Boxer series of thrillers that features Brill Winger, Ex-South African Special Forces soldier who now works for Barraque, an off the books U.S.A. government contractor. In this case Brill is sent on a mission to rescue a pair of journalists who were working on a documentary in Syria. A terrorist group has kidnapped the journalist while they were documenting the Syrian government use chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war. The story and plotline are rather a bare bones effort. Action sequences are numerous and well done, but not much is explained or well understood by this reader as to why things are happening. Besides the action, there just isn’t much to the story or the characters.

Brill Winger has more luck than any man should expect to enjoy. Mind you his body is marked by scars from past wounds, he seems to be remarkably resilient. Not all the scars can be seen. His other assets are a lack of physical fear, he has been tortured within moments of death, a point at which most men could not have recovered. His killer instinct knows no second of pause before he acts and his accuracy is flawless. He kills without thought or remorse. Despite the traumas he has endured his libido remains intact.

Another text I’ve read under another title.

If you are looking for a quick thriller, you have one of the right books. Sideways is the third title to star Brill Winger who is gunning for terrorists after what they had done to him and his girlfriend. So when he gets a chance to retrieve a Senator's daughter, he takes it, not worrying about the how, jut the way. And by winging it, he does manage to survive and save the girl and her cameraman. The fun in in the how.

Hostages rescued and justice delivered

I enjoy books where justice is served and this book delivers. I enjoyed the interactions with other characters and how the main character finds a reason not to kill the innocents even if it means his mission is compromised. People who like the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child may enjoy the survival and combat skills of Brill, the main character. I will definitely be reading other books in the series. Thank you Chris for an enjoyable read.
