Olive Pennbrooke never expected to get a call to solve a magical murder. Now pulled back into the quaint town of Appleton she struggles to find her place as she uncovers who killed her mentor, Mr. Sorenson… All the while trying to figure out what happened to her magic! With a case this personal she won’t rest until she finds out who is wreaking havoc in her small town. Not to mention her boss will come after her if she doesn’t! But with evil forces nipping at her heels, can she get to the bottom of the case before it’s too late?
A good start to a new series. Okay the characters although good need a bit more fleshing out to become great and the plot was a nice new angle on an old theme. However it just needed a bit more oomph to be great plus a closer eye on the proofing. Her new job as lecturer hadn't filled her with the satisfaction that she thought it would have. Therefore the phone call from home was welcome even if the news was heartbreaking. Her surrogate father had died and although the police were investigating they thought it was an accident. However her sister thought it was murder! Murder by magic! Then finding out that he had left the museum to her gave her the impetus to decide to stay. Both of her sister's had magical powers although she always thought of hers as being inferior to theirs. What good was it to be able to glimpse the past? Add in mysterious bones, a missing fossil egg, a homeless teenager, thefts in the community and the sightings of goblins together with guardians (familiars) that were out of the ordinary. Can she solve the mystery? Will the family secret come out? Where is the egg and why is it important?
I loved it! It had all the elements I like in cozy book. I’m not saying much else because you should snuggle up and read it for yourself! Keep in mind Cozy Mysteries are meant to be light, easy reading. Series cozies you get to know the characters better with each book, like getting to know a new friend. I cannot wait for the next one. I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this one, fingers crossed I’ll get the next also.
