The narrator of Remnants of Ash read this book with an addictive passion. I’ll admit I haven’t read many Fae stories but I really liked this book.

The world as we know it is being torn apart by fae. Chloe sees the start of the end when her professor is killed not so accidentally. Now she needs to find a way to set things right. The task seems impossible but with the help of a fallen fae an adventure unfolds. With magic, romance and the overshadow of death Chloe and Bram set out to save the human world.

This is the start of a series and is a continuous story. I really enjoyed this but it will leave you wanting more.

What would you do if the fae took over your world? Are the light fae really to be trusted? Chloe and her friend Bram are thrown into a war between the fae as they try to save the mortal world they grew up in. But who really is Bram and how does he know so much about this war and the fae? I only have one complaint about this book..it was to short and I needed more. I will be picking up book two very soon. I fell in love with the characters in this story as well as the world. It mixes magic and fae with our modern day world which I thought was an awesome concept. If you are looking for a good fae book this is definitely a must read. I also really enjoyed hearing about the details of the magical creatures as well as the many different weapons they have to use to help them stop this war. I also enjoyed the magic in this world and I think C.K. Dawn did and amazing job mixing their world with ours. The narrator also did an amazing job brining the characters to life in this story. Their were parts of this story that had me laughing and the parts that had me fearing for their safety. Dawn really has a way of writing and made me feel like I was there and part of the action. I couldn’t put this book down and can’t wait to start book two!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a little unsure of how I feel about this book. From my understanding, fae have unleashed an apocalypse onto the human world, and Chole and Bram are the only hope left when it comes to saving the world and the remaining human population.

The synopsis for this book sounded amazing, and I couldn’t help myself when there was a copy available to read. I was immediately intrigued. I’m a huge fan of anything fae, so I expected a big hit!

Sadly, it left me feeling a little lost. There were a lot of holes in the storyline, and not a lot of explanation. Maybe that gets explained in the rest of the series, but I just needed more information.

I didn’t like that Chloe was amazing at everything, and she had so much hidden talent. The whole Chloe/Bram relationship felt very forced, and maybe if there was a little back story, so we knew how they got there, it might have felt less forced.

I think this had huge potential, and I hope that the rest of the series fills in the missing holes. While, I may have had a few more negatives than positives, I still would read book two, given the opportunity!

I’m only going to write one review for the first two books (which is what I read). The reason is that I feel this is a serial, not a series and, and as such, both books contain one single story that doesn’t break. I don’t actually understand why it’s broken in two. Neither book is so long as to prohibit their remaining as one. I can only imagine the same can be said for the rest of the series. I got no conclusions in either of these two, so I doubt I’d get one in the next or the next, etc.

There was a time I felt like I was making this point, about the difference between a serial and a series, every day. I even wrote a ranty blog post about it. But the trend finally died down and I haven’t had to in a while. I guess all those same books are making it to audio now. Because this is the second time in a week I’ve written a review for a ‘series’ that is actually a serial in my opinion.

So, on to the actual review. I don’t want to be mean, but I don’t think this was particularly good. I think the author probably had a good idea, but didn’t quite manage to get it onto paper. The hero and heroine meet in the prologue (meet and nothing more) and then when all hell breaks loose in chapter one (some time in the future) they are meant to already be friends and at least one is in love. The story moves from there. HOWEVER, the reader has been left out of all of it. Thus, I didn’t feel Bram’s affection for Chloe at all. How could I? We don’t see any of it prior to him basically telling her he loves her. NONE. In fact, I initially thought they were still virtual strangers.

We also don’t see any of the research Chloe, Bram and the professor have been doing to understand the Scorch. So, when it happens right out of the gate, the reader is clueless and basically unconcerned. And Chloe seems to know things she shouldn’t, because I didn’t know what she’d been researching. So, how could she recognize a royal fay [fae] on sight? No idea.

Then there is the rather large and abrupt shift in Chloe’s personality that happens at roughly 50% into the first book. She goes from teary and afraid to kick-butt superhero in a split second (in a seriously stupid move too). Though she does remain a too perfect Mary Sue throughout, as well as too good at everything, mastering magic and weaponry in an instant, without effort.

Then there is the fact that I think the author tried to get too much in. There are fae (high, low and royal), the four horseman of the apocalypse, witches, werewolves and vampires. And none of it given any real world building to understand it all.

The narrator did a fine job, except that it’s based in Seattle. Chloe started out sounding perfectly American. But about halfway through the fist book she turned English, apparently. Then in book two, she’s American again.

All in all, this was not a winner for me. Mechanically the writing is fine but the story feels barely sketched out.

This was so much fun (in the dangerous gory end of the world kind of way), my only complaint is that the story was too short and had to end! I will admit that I was concerned when the book first started since we are dropped into the middle of what seems like a crazy conflict with no explanation and I flailed a little. Once the pieces started clicking into place (even though there is basically no backstory at all- it is basically about living in the here and now), I could not get enough and blew through the story in one afternoon. I can easily say that I have never come across a story like Remnants of Ash before and now I am hungry for more.

“We can portal? Anywhere?” Chloe gasped.
Mary harrumphed. “This isn’t Diagon Alley and the name’s not Harry; it’s Mary.”

The story was 114 pages, 3 and a half hours as an audiobook and I could have easily listened/read this as a book that was three times as long! The world building was so creepy and complicated and detailed and I loved it. Not only is this a dystopian where the world as we know it ended, but the villains are the Fey. But keep in mind that these are not (only) the beautiful High Court Fey, but the deadly and terrifying beasts that destroy and eat mankind. And then we add in cool, powerful witches and a magical hideout that can relocate- with uncertain loyalties. There was nonstop action, almost the entire length of the book was battles and adventuring...and a dash of some forbidden style love that made me want to dance with joy. This ain't your typical apocalypse.

Bram chuckled.
“What? She said every speck.” Chloe laughed back.
“No, I know. That was just…cute.” Bram smiled.
“Cute?” She laughed again. “Cute in the apocalypse. Yay me.” Chloe blushed. She had to admit it, though. It was nice having a semi-normal meal and some conversation. Albeit in a Witch’s Spree hidden to human sight, eating with a fae, and about to portal through a magical mirror.

This was my first read from CK Dawn and I loved every minute of it. I have now added the other two books in the series to my wishlist and I l really wish that they were available in audio as well since the narrator did a terrific job of bringing Chloe to life and giving her the right amount of personality and feeling to make me connect to her spunk and determination. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes the darker side of the Fey like The Fae Games Series by Jill Ramsower or the apocalyptic destruction of Year One by Nora Roberts.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by CK Dawn. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

It was cute. Chloe is a fun character to follow around during a fae apocalypse. She and her professor have been researching the fae for a long time, so when the first volley of the apocalypse (several natural disasters in the same day) occur, Chloe knows exactly what is going on. I love that she’s not an empty headed twit! Love it! She has some idea of how bad it can get, she’s already got most of an emergency pack ready, and she knows where she wants to go first.

Alas, her professor is no longer in the picture, but his trusted sidekick Bram is. He’s been prepping for even longer (like lead lined apartment kind of prep). The two know of each other but Chloe initially has her reservations about waiting out the worse of it with him. Bram has some big revelations about himself! That was fun, a little cutsy. But then the two are headed out again.

The scabs are everywhere! They are horrible creatures who enjoy hunting down humans and eating them, or just tearing them apart. It was pretty gruesome when they gave little gifts to Chloe (who is under a fae glamor at this point so she doesn’t look human) and Bram. The two are headed for Bremerton (this adventure takes place in the Pacific Northwest) and there’s plenty of ways for the quest to go wrong.

Witches, vampires, werewolves, and the high fae courts are just some of the things Chloe has to deal with, or avoid. Later on, they meet Lorenzo (who puts lavender in his coffee, so we know he’s odd right off). There’s a witch named Mary who proves to be quite sneaky.

The ending winds up with big confessions of truth and love (yawn!) and a quick sex scene. Then back to the adventure! Briefly, but Chloe has an epiphany and she now things she can stop the apocalypse. So, we’re left on a big cliff hanger. Over all, it was a fun, light read. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Sydnee Fullmer is really great with Chloe’s voice. She really captured her personality and emotions. Her male voices could use a touch more masculinity, but were still distinct. I liked how she changed Chloe’s voice when she was under the glamor (as described in the book). The pacing was good and there were no issues with the recording. 4/5 stars.

I listened to the audio and the narrator does a really good job, so I'd recommend listening. She fit the female lead well.

Cool world building and an interesting idea. I really liked where the story went. There are popular elements to this story dealing with the Fae, but it still felt unique to me. Loved the magical elements, and the Fae elements were great. I also really enjoy apocalypse scenarios, so that added another interesting element to contend with and we get a little action with some fight scenes. This story feels YA for most of it, but the romance does get adult. The little bit of romance is generally really sweet though, and I liked the connection between them. I enjoyed the writing; there were some scenes where the characters randomly get mad at each other, so that felt weird at times. Overall, the writer did a nice job. Entertaining, fun read! It does end without full resolution, so that sucks, but I am looking forward to the next book! Lots of interesting ways the story could go!

I love stories about Fae. So when I had the opportunity to get an advanced copy of this book, I jumped at the chance! This is an interesting story about Chloe, a mere human, and Bram who is a Fae (but he’s fighting for the humans) and their quest for survival after the apocalypse starts. I found this to be a unique take on the Fae because they are causing the apocalypse on earth. There’s lots of stories out there about Fae coming to earth and causing trouble, or humans ending up in the Fae world, or even Fae and humans in a made up world. But this is Fae causing the apocalypse on the earth that we live in. It’s sci-fi/apocalypse fiction with Fae, so I thought that was cool. There’s lots of action, some very curious characters, and some sweet moments of romance between Chloe and Bram. I very much want to see what will happen in their continued fight against the Fae.

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed this, it was an exciting adventure. I adore Fae and am always ready to read about them. This book added an apocalyptic feel and it worked so well.

I love that Chloe is strong and intelligent, she knew what was coming and has a plan. Bram is a very prepared hunter, he's mysterious and intriguing. I would like a little more meat to the story; more fleshing out of the characters and their backgrounds. It was good but I wanted it to be longer. I'm definitely interested in continuing the series.

Sydnee Fullmer's narration is great, she really brought Chloe to life and delivered her emotions. I really enjoyed how she changed her voice at certain parts. It was clear and easy to distinguish between each character.

I received this audiobook at no-cost from Audiobookworm Promotions. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Such a good story!

I loved reading this first book of this series! The main character Chloe & Bram are so perfect for each other! They are super kick-ass and have such great chemistry. I am totally hooked and want to know what happens next. It's non stop action and I love how the Fae there is no purely good or evil, it's not so straight cut. That the "Light Fae" can also be "Dark", and vise versa. I have to admit this is my first reading a story which involves the four horsemens. It's so interesting and can't wait to read more! Highly recommend. Also besides magic and fae there are witches and other magical beings and creatures who are like werewolves mixed with vampires it seems. So COOL and creepy at same time!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. It was recommended to me by a friend for a challenge. It started where you met the two main characters and then next thing you knew it got crazy. I really enjoyed that as it didn't seem to slow down from there. I liked the interaction between the characters. When I got done with the book I was like wow, so what happens next. I am bumming as I have some other books that I have to read before I can see what the next books are like. I already added them to my list. It wasn't a cliffhanger but more of a ending for now with more to come, which since I don't like cliffhangers was happy with. Can't wait to read the next one and did and will recommend this book.

I enjoyed Remnants of Ash. It is the first installment to CK Dawn's Reign of Fate series. It is, also, first introduction to her storytelling. I had the pleasure of listening to the audio version of this book. I thought Sydnee Fullmer did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. Her performance portrayed the characters perfectly. The action, adventure, and romance was quite entertaining.
I am giving Remnants of Ash four stars. I can not wait to read more by CK Dawn in the future. I would love to find out what happens next in the Reign of Fate series.

Remnants of Ash is book one of the Reign of Fae series. This is a unique and different take on the beginning to the biblical apocalypse. Seemingly the only hope for humanity is Chloe (a human) and Bram (a fae). The story line draws you in and keeps you turning pages to the end. Would have been great to have a little more background information. We do have action and twist and turns, some you will see coming and other you will not. Looking forward to book two to see where CK Dawn will be taking us. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

I really enjoyed this new take on the fae, the apocalypse, & the four horsemen!

This New Adult novel had me hooked from the beginning. I just had to know who (or what) Bram was! And the revelation? Oh yes!

As for Chloe, I loved that she was well educated, & invested in learning. The way she stumbled into Bram’s life was spot on.

As for the narration, I quite enjoyed this voice actor. She didn’t go overboard with deepening her voice for Bram, yet still managed to convey masculinity. Her words flowed smoothly and were filled with passion for the story.

Read this as part of a collection called Shades of Fae. The book was enjoyable and the story was still written. There are aspects of the story i enjoyed, but the similarities of the four major fae characters to another mythical for seemed a bit of a stretch to mange and unnecessary. I think those for characters could have stood well enough on their own without this connection being implied. I recommend the book, but that part which is a major of the story was a bit much for me.

CK Dawn had me hooked from the first line. I would've liked a longer story, but I am glad Chloe and Bram's tale continues into more books. I really enjoyed Dawn's take on fae politics. It has been a while since I read a fantasy that I enjoyed. It had a nice pace and was engaging. Her story had me guessing up until the very end. I cannot wait to read the subsequent books and continue Chloe and Bram's journey.

This is a very enjoyable fae read!!! Loved the twist with the Fae royals and who they really are!! The characters are very well developed and each have a voice of their own. The author's description of people and places paint a vivid picture in your mind. There is also an amazing love story in the making. Action and Adventure too. What more could you ask for except the next book in the series. Can't wait to continue the story!!

My review is based on the audiobook. This book is on the shorter side and I wish it were longer becasue I enjoyed what I read. The storyline is pretty original and the characters likeable. The narration had good pacing and character voices. I am invested enough to want to know more and will continue to book 2 which I am hoping has more depth and character development

Very interesting story and characters. Chloe is pretty relatable and realistic. The apocalypse nature mixed with faeries is really cool and like nothing I've read before.
I do think some pieces of the plot happened a little too fast, like the romance, and the writing could use some polishing but overall, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next book.

Truly phenomenal

I absolutely loved this novel. Everything about it is so unique and leaves you on edge. What you think is about to happen, doesn't, this novel isn't predictable. It's simply amazing. The characters are so well rounded that you fall in love with them, even the villains. And the world is immersive. With each page turn you become more hooked.

If your world went into utter chaos and destruction tomorrow, how would you survive? Would you have the will to survive if you lost all of the people who meant anything to you? In a post-apocalyptic world, it is kill or be killed. In Remnants of Ash, Dawn takes two characters who are unlikely to pair up—and they are forced to save what is left of humanity. This story will pull readers in just enough to give the reader a sense of foreboding and then it’s over.

Chloe Etain is a college student, making her way through the world on her own when the war picks up its pace and obliterates the earth with something called the Scorch. The Fae have really put survival to the test with these vampire-like creatures scouring the earth in search of their next meal. Meeting up with Bram has been the best and possibly the worst thing that could have happened. Bram is mysterious, sexy, but most importantly, he is a hunter and very lethal. As their journey rapidly continues, both individuals must learn the ways of this new world and each other. Can they work together? Can they survive against the impending doom that lurks at their destination?

Dawn has a very short story with the first installment of the Reign of Fae series, called Remnants of Ash. Short stories are totally acceptable for certain genres; however, this specific series seems to have a lot going on which is not conducive to this type of writing. In such a short time frame, the story loses space for a well-written backstory on characters and the plot is virtually thrown together which appears sloppy. In this story, characters appear a bit underdeveloped and scenes typically smoosh together fairly quickly, which may leave readers with confusion or complete loss of interest. Since this review does compliment the audiobook, Fullmer kept up with the quick pace fairly well; however, some wording was slurred together and there were mispronunciations through the story. The story itself has the capacity to be five-star worthy if the author ever decides to lengthen this installment and add more “meat” to the characters and scenes, and categorizes the book correctly. The development process of this story could definitely use another look. If you are a reader of post-apocalyptic, science fiction, magic, fantasy with a small amount of romance, you may enjoy this read. Since this is the first installment within the series, readers are able to jump right in.

A copy of this audiobook was provided to Turning Another Page by Audiobookworm Promotions and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a three-star rating to Remnants of Ash by CK Dawn.

The romance came from nowhere to turn this into an apocalyptic fae steamy romance. Unbelievable.

And instead of using fae lore (there’s so much to choose from!) it suddenly changes into the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

The beginning was awesome: vivid descriptions, fast-paced action, interesting characters and believable emotion.

Adding the witches was pushing it. Changing the basic premise of fae scorching the world to three of the four horsemen of the apocalypse was breaking suspended disbelief. Along with the forced romance, this novella threw me out of the story.

Too much happening for a novella. There’s even a chapter from a witch’s point of view that has nothing to do with the main characters. If it had been any longer, I wouldn’t have finished it. As it is, this novella is the start of a series that I won’t be reading.

Trigger warning: violence, death, gore.

*I read this as part of the Relics and Runes boxset.
