Haven Hart #4

From These Ashes

Rate this book
A product of his past, Black spends half his time saving lives and the other half taking them. Every day, a hard choice must be made and he’s the man to make it. Long ago, he vowed to never love again; one-night stands with a willing body was all he ever needed. But along came Quill, and Black’s life is irrevocably changed. He never expects something as simple as Quill’s persistence to alter the way he not only sees the world, but how he lives it.

Quill has bad taste in men and equally horrible luck. Growing up wasn’t easy, surviving is even harder. When his past and present collide, he’s convinced he’ll finally witness his own destruction. But when an unlikely antihero steps in to protect him, his life is turned on its head. He’s spent months flirting with the man of his dreams and hoping he’d take notice. But it turns out, being on Black’s radar isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and his idea of protection varies greatly from Quill’s.

Unknowingly sharing the same goal—burying their own pasts deeper than the fires of hell can reach—they’re both unaware that jumping into that fire will do more than ignite their feelings, it could lead to their own demise. Will Black and Quill be consumed by the flames, or from these ashes, will they find their own happily ever after?

My favourite one so far.
I was looking forward to this book mainly in part because Black has proved himself to be a complete arsehole. And who doesn’t love an alpha bad boy. Quill seemed quirky and confident and not slow at showing he’s definitely interested in Black. As shown in this bit from the previous book A Dangerous Dance.

“You should come more often, you’ve got a fan club.” As subtly as possible, I gestured behind him to Quill, who was wiping the counter slowly as he gawked at Black.
“The kid?” Black seemed shocked that Quill was fawning over him. “He’s what, sixteen?”
“Twenty-two,” Quill shouted from the counter.
“Has great hearing, too,” Mace joked.
“I’m old enough to be his father,” Black grumbled as he gathered the garbage and took it to the trash.
“I’m fine with that.” Quill winked at Black as he gave the kid one last look.

I enjoyed this book. I warmed to Black and thought Quill was just delightful. I’m now looking forward to the next one which I assume will feature Lee and Jones.

Action, sex, fierceness ! Haven Hart series #4.
We have seen some very wonderful guys and extremely bad men in this series. This story is about a younger guy, Quill, working two jobs and having a rough time. He’s been through a lot of hospital visits in his young life.
He also delivers items for Mr, Blackrose/ Black,

the big, 6’6” tattooed hunk, with his long hair, beard, muscles, is a powerful security expert and assassin. Things change when Quill is beaten and misses a delivery.
Black, with his long hair and beard, muscles and strength, takes over. We see some very bad men, a horrible brother, some fierce assassins, and helpful friends. Black is an interesting mix of a caring heart along with his aggressive killer side.
Quill is 5’2” pierced, flamboyant,

and has a wild spirit.
Black reveals his past, and Quill finally admits his. These two understand each other. Their sexy scenes are hot, powerful and exciting.
It was Snow and Christopher Manos who first caught my attention, and we see them once again.

I loved the ending and bad guy round up and bloody justice. The epilogue is terrific.
Highly recommended. Enjoy !

Another fantastic job from Davidson King

I love Davidson King's romantic suspense style, there's always enough tension and a real sense that something could go wrong at anytime.

There's always two vastly different men who somehow manage to be perfect for each other.

One is always uniquely gifted with the ability to bring out the best side of what are normally incredibly dangerous men while still retaining their own strength and independence.

Here I liked how the whole narrative sort of accidentally came to be. Black wasn't looking for Quill, Quill was just trying to survive. But somehow circumstances conspired to bring them together and make Black be the one to try and put things right.

There's brief glimpses of Mace and Bill, Teddy and Riordan and series faves Snow and Christopher. We also get given a potential new pairing which I personally think may end up being a three, and there's another glimpse into the world of the mysterious Poe, who is so totally the Hart heir I'd put money on it.

There is violence, as expected, but I was surprised at just how dirty Black was willing to get his hands dirty once it became clear Quill was a target. The ending is brutal but I felt not a flicker of pity for those involved.

I'm eagerly looking forward to reading the next one in this fascinating series.

5.0 stars ...

(Re-read: Feb. '25 ... my previous words still apply in totality!)

Don't you just love stories where the characters actually get what they deserve?!? The "justice" dealt out in these books is spot-on perfect! And, yes, the "good" guys get their well-earned happy ever after. This series is absofuckinlutely delicious!! 😏😋😉

I couldn’t believe it. I had wished my whole life for a fairytale ending. For my prince to come save me from my life, and I got so much more than a prince or a knight, I got the king.

I'm obsessed with this series and now I MUST dive into the next tale ... STAT ... which brings Snow, Christopher, and Simon from Book #1 back to center stage. Then ... THEN ... Book #6 with Lee, Jones, and Ginger and, JIMINY CHRISTMAS! ... is it, oh dear me, possibly a throuple?!? Oh, hell yes please!! ❤️🥴❤️

I have been waiting for this book and it exceeded all my expectations! It broke my heart, made me cry and then made me happy! It was so engrossing I couldn't stop till I finished it. My preconceived notions about Black were shattered like a unwanted ugly vase gifted to me by the least favorite distant relative. I was very surprised and loved it that he was so different from what I thought.

Both men have pasts that are better left forgotten but still are ruling their lives. The demons buried deep haunt them giving purpose to one, and robbing the other of self worth. There was real angst and pain that needed to be expunged from Black so that he could heal. And Quill needed to find himself and finally see that he was somebody worthy of love and happiness. Many secrets are revealed, questions are answered. I will keep mum about that - it will have greater emotional effect when read for the first time. But I felt the connection between them snap into place like a rubber band. It was tangible. I got to know both Quill and Black from a different intimate angle, see their vulnerabilities, see them let go and just be.

Many secondary characters from previous books featured here shortly. They are still as close as ever, and I am happy to say that Black finally opened up and showed his gentle side not only to Quill but several others. There is thrill of revenge, blood and fear that is speckled with humor, sarcasm and sweet romantic moments. It was all well balanced and flowed so smoothly, a very enjoyable read. Ms King did an amazing job, I commend her and highly recommend this book!

Another addition to an addictive series. Perhaps I found Black a little tiresome with his "I'm to old for you" but another 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

BlackQuill is ❤️.

Black just kicked Chris out of the top of this series' morally gray hot savior list. (Book 5 will determine if Chris can get that back. LOL) Black is a big, strong, and powerful man with a very soft heart for Quill and these two brokenhearted men fits each other perfectly. Quill is a survivor and I just wanna hug him all throughout this book.

Things are getting intense in Haven Hart and the circle is getting bigger. Everyone's involvement has become an entangled mess and I'm here for it!

I like it but ...

I have issues with the plot and flow of the story. It seems and feels , as recycle of previous plots. Same goes for typecasting all the baddies anti-heroes as dumb OTT sociopaths.

Quill and Black "romance built up" was non existent. Didn't see even a spark of chemistry between them. When they finally get together, almost at the end of the book, their sexy times were lukewarm , then faded to black.

Terrance Blackrose is supposed to be this skilled, successful , founder and CEO of a highly profitable Assassin's Organization. Yet, the way he talks/reacts to his fellows assassins employees and his poor decisions making, shows him more as a caricature of what a big, bad, arse MF, than an actual one.

With all that said, I do enjoy Haven Hart series ; the word building and characters are dear to me. Looking forward reading book 5 , as Snow , a favorite character from book 1 , and his hubby Chris are once again front and center.

Quill & Black - loved it ❤️❤️❤️ my only wish was more time in the epilogue. I have really enjoyed this series and while I expected more grit and suspense, I loved the softer side of the assassins and their ability to let a vulnerable softie get under their guard. Snow remains the key player in the series and continues to wield his beauty !

Reread/Relisten

same as before, but i am coming to not enjoy these very short epilogues... i want more but they are so short that i feel like if they were at least 5-10 pages longer i wouldn't be mad haha

4 stars

Okay Snow and Christopher have a run for their money for top couple of this series.

I really enjoyed getting to see Quill and Black's relationship bloom. I think that this story could have benefited being longer, but that is just me being selfish because I wanted more with these two characters.

I will say the endings (even though this one was WAY better than the last book) they leave a lot to be desired, since to me they end kinda abrupt to me.

Now back to Snow and Christopher, my fave couple haha

Ok, I’m crying over this one.

Quill & Black are perfect for each other. Amazing chemistry & Black doing what he does best is epic.

The ending was beautiful & I so did cry. Yep. This one is good.

Minus one star because Davidson needs a better editor.

Quill and Black's book!

I must admit I expected much more from this book than was given. Don't get me wrong, it was still as enjoyable as the others but there was something missing.

Black's sudden interest and protectiveness over Quill was expected but the "feelings" were a bit abrupt. It was like whiplash.

Also the story had huge potholes but like all that have come before, it managed to be enjoyable. HOW DO YOU DO IT DAVIDSON KING?!!! Lol!

Reread 10/2021 review- 4.3〜4.4 stars?? I found Black’s slight high-handedness a little irritating, especially because it’s something I hate. Still, I do quite like this book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Reread 09/2020 review- 4.4 stars?

Original 11/2019 review- 4 stars. I enjoy this series very much =)
I like Black and Quill, especially Quill & his story.
I will say that the steamy scenes were not as good as book 3’s in my opinion, but they were better than 2’s I think.

3.5 Stars

You guys.... this is the 4th book at 3.5 stars... I don’t know why I can’t seem to close on these ones. When I think about these books after I’ve read them I tell myself that we’re great and I want to find another series just like this. So they are really good, I just can’t seem to get to the fuck me silly I loved this book....

Anyways onto the review.

I have been looking forward to more Quill since the last book and he did not disappoint. It was Quill and Black’s relationship I didn’t like as well as the abrupt ending.

So for most of the book Black had 0 interest in Quill romantically. He was protective but it was never made to appear as it was more than someone bigger protecting someone littler. (At least from Blacks POV, from others they saw it for what it was. But BLACK never had those thoughts personally.) And then all of a sudden big closed off Black spills his past and boom they are in bed and living it. Which is fine but I still personally found Black rather romantically disconnected the whole time.

The ending was abrupt... like super abrupt. When we get to the official turning point in Black and Quills relationship things just speed up and finish. We get the the info we need, we get the bad guys, we kill them, we live HEA.

For me there was also a couple of plot holes that I would have liked filled, so that it wasn’t just in the book for filler. At one point during our abrupt ending, Black calls Lee and says he needs him but we never actually see or hear what Lee does for him, if anything. We also make a big deal about Quills brother having a tech guy but hear nothing more about it later on. And I am going to be honest the Hart family Vaults just make me want to roll my eyes... I don’t of course because I enjoy the storyline and that is part of it but I get pretty close.

Lastly I have been looking forward to Jones and Lees story for a long time and I really hope this book didn’t ruin that for us. Either they don’t get their HEA or Davidson King really needs to step up the emotion in there book and make you feel it. And I’m honestly a little nervous.

“You sound like an angry dad.”
When he was silent for too long, I glanced at him. His green eyes were on me, and fuck if he wasn’t in flirt mode.
“Wanna be my angry daddy?”

Nathan wasn’t going to listen to me, so I had to protect myself. If I got killed, Black would murder me.

Eep!! I’m so excited 🙃

I would give this a 3.75 if I could. The story was interesting but I honestly didn't feel the connection between Quill and Black. I was surprised that Quill didn't have a last run in with his brother or Ronnie. It was a bit anticlimactic. I think this series is decent but I am definitely hooked.

I have been eagerly awaiting for Black and Quill story ever since I learned that they going to be a thing. Black is such a larger than life character being the boss of a group of assassins and Quill is the sassy twink who flirted shamelessly with him.

In this book, Quill's past and current drama was the meat of the story. He was a victim of domestic abuse and he finally found his Dark Prince to sweep him off his feet and keep him safe. Black is a formidable character and I actually like the way he was portrayed in the beginning. He was professional, aloof, protective of Quill in a platonic manner. I like to see how he change his feelings towards Quill over time. However, when the feeling finally changes, I find the transition a bit abrupt, and part of it might be due to Quill's similarities to Black's ex, which doesn't make me swoon over.

I like the action, the involvement of Snow and Poe in the grand scheme of things. The blood thirsty in me was engrossed with the violence towards the end. Overall, it was a comforting story for Quill and I'm just so happy that he found his HEA.

ATTENZIONE!

Ho adorato ovviamente ritrovare i vecchi personaggi. Adoro come Snow riesca a inserirsi in ogni capitolo senza mai annoiare. Ho iniziato a guardare con interesse Lee, Jones e la New entry Ginger. Continuo a voler prendere a pugni Poe... Credo lo odierò fino al suo libro... E... Awww.... Semplicemente amo questa serie! È scritta bene e sempre sul pezzo. Straordinaria e da venerare. Se amate le storie un po' oscure ma anche ricche di amore e azione... fa al caos vostro. La adoro e ora.... Let's go! Devo continuare ora! Snow Storm sto arrivando!

DNF @ 75%!! This is where I throw the towel in where this series and this author is concerned! Bummer [because this author is seriously a sweetheart and I really/truly wanted to like her books] :-/ ... but I just cannot continue!!

FINAL THOUGHTS AND UPDATES::

Alright, this is where I decide to indefinitely part ways with this author (or more specifically, her books)! As much as I wanted to like this author's books and/or her writing, I can't, because dude, they're really really bad :-/!! The author herself is a sweetheart and I anticipate - for her - that she'll evolve into a kickass author, but as things stand for me now, I find these books in this series to be absolute and total train wrecks :-/!!
1. This author dials into all the typical M/M book stereotypes and when reading any of the last 4 books, I kept thinking it's like she was going through a checklist of stereotypes as she was writing, and boy did she hit them all!!

2. The dialogues and the writing in general [in need of tighter editing but not THAT badly] was quite choppy, inconsistent, and juvenile! The characterizations of each MC read like they were all mirrors of one another; the personalities didn't change, only the names did!

3. With every pair of MCs, there was ONE that was immature, bratty, irritating, and quite frankly, borderline obnoxious - with the exception of Snow, who was an absolute sweetheart through and through!

4. There was A LOT of tell and not enough show! More to the point, the author paraphrases what she thinks the reader wants to know! NO, let me read and make up my own decisions ... otherwise it's just like asking someone else to read something and having them just tell me about it! SHOW SHOW SHOW!!

5. There were quite a few plot-holes and the lack of logic in quite a few areas were mind-numbing! Black did NOT rule his company the way the reader tells us he did! The proof is in the pudding and it seems this author was NOT successful in wrangling her characters, because while she was "narrating" in one way, the characters kept getting away from her and acting in quite another; often times, contradicting the tone the author was trying to set for this book!! There was a huge disconnect between the characters and the author ... almost like she said one thing, and then went ahead and contradicted everything she just wrote! You expect an olympic swimmer to be able to swim ... just as a cryptic example!!!

6. All the sex scenes are almost exactly the same! Yawn! Enough said!

7. The writing, on top of everything I just said, was incredibly formulaic, dude, seriously!! AND ... ugh ... I am sure I have a lot more to say, but I'll leave it here for now!! I'm done venting! I'm done with these books, I'm just done! I gave this author a valiant try but this is where we permanently part ways :-/!!

I mean ABSOLUTELY NO ill will toward the author whatsoever!! Like I said, the author is such a sweetheart and I do wish her success! I just have to be honest about the books I've read - the two things are entirely separate! I'll say more at some point, but for now, I'm done! I won't be interacting in comments or anything else as this is simply a safe place for me to NEUTRALLY write about my thoughts on all the books!!

*****************************

I’m getting really irritated by the blaring issues in the books/writing here ...
1. Quill’s friend says she will give him an hour before she calls the cops, if she thinks he’s in danger!! Why an hour, do you have any fucking clue what can happen in an HOUR?!!? Why not 15 minutes (for example)?!? This makes absolutely no sense to me!!

2. An hour did NOT pass before the cops actually showed up, which is great, but in terms of timeframe, the author is either super sloop, or everything is happening in slow motion, because WHAT?!?

3. If you’re a great friend and you’re concerned, why the fuck did you just drive away?! If I’m concerned enough about someone’s well being you can bet I won’t just drop the person off and drive away!!!

4. Does Quill have ZERO preservation skills whatsoever?!? What kind of idiot walks INTO trouble, shrugging concerns off like nobody’s business, and then hopes for the best!!! Also, the man who’s about to rape you demands you walk to the bedroom and you just go?!!? Where’s the fight!!! I get that Quill feels defeated and has resolved himself to this reality but come on, man!!! If the police hadn’t showed up goodness knows what would have happened!! At least he had the wherewithal to yell for help when the cops were at the door, but still!!

I think that these books could have been way better if betas were a little more on point with this sort of thing, and if all the plot holes and inconsistencies were avoided!! Just some attention to detail would have sufficed! I just don’t agree with feeding into idiotic stereotypes JUST for plot development and angst!! Have some faith in the story and in your characters! Give them a fighting chance and give them tools to persevere, but knock it off with the stigmas and stereotypes!! Meh! Getting irritated but again, we shall see!!

*** This isn’t a review as much as it is an unabridged update, so I mean for it to be read as such!!
*** Everything in this "review" is structured as quick notes and observations!!

But as an IMPORTANT NOTE I will also say this: This author also has a way of weaving an engaging tale, which is why I keep giving these books chances, and I keep anticipating the series and this author hitting their stride :-)!! The tales and characters are engaging and I am intrigued to know more about Christopher’s and Black’s extended (professional) families (ie all the men these books are based on) :-)!! So there ARE positives and plus sides as well :-)! Anyway, I’ll expand on that later and again, we shall see!

Another great story by Davidson King.

I couldn’t wait to learn Black’s story.

I liked Quinn since we first saw him in the book and got mixed with the assassin’s later on. He becomes a messenger for Black and has a small crush on him since Black is a mix between Thor and Satan.

After what happened to Black’s company, he has been hesitant to trust anyone else. I liked that Black didn’t develop feelings for Quinn from the beginning and they evolved slowly while trying to protect Quinn. He isn’t fazed by Quinn’s flirting easily but lets him do it.

When things get out of hand, he is there to protect Quinn and with the help of the characters we saw in the other books they make plans.

I thought it’d be an angsty story but it was pretty straightforward.

Now I am looking forward to learn the story of certain assassins in Black’s company.

Audiobook review

I would say that From These Ashes could be read on its own if you haven’t read any of the previous ones. There are brief mentions of past characters, but nothing intrusive or anything that will have you wondering what you have missed. Then again, if you do skip them you are missing out on a lot of fun.

I have been looking forward to reading this story ever since we first met Quill. There was a spark between him and Black that I just wanted to explore. I – and probably almost everyone in his life adored Quill. He was cute, fun and sassy and just my kind of guy. Black on the other hand tried hard to be stoic and standoffish. Both are trying to keep others at arm’s length, to keep from getting hurt or for others being hurt. Both are troubled and haunted by their past and past mistakes. It’s shaped them into the men they are today.

From These Ashes was for the most part a sweet story – well as sweet and cuddly book with assassins could be I guess. But what I mean was, there were no real dark moments, no horror. Some angst and a few violent ones, but nothing dark. Like the previous stories, it’s not one that claims to be true to reality. It’s one meant to entertain – and it does from beginning to end.

I love this narration duo! Philip Alces and Joel Leslie were perfect for Quill and Black, I mean they were Quill and Black. I could see them before me when Alces and Leslie spoke. It’s rare that the narration fit so perfectly.

Another thing that I loved was how beautifully they work together. It’s effortless and seamless and so smooth when they switch off you don’t really notice it. Well, you notice that the POV is switching and the voices change, but the essence of the book and characters never leave. It stays the same and throughout. So does the pacing and tone. I’m also eternally grateful that the volume editing was much better this time around. There was no change in volume between the narrations – or at least one that you’d notice.

I hope that Alces and Leslie will continue to create many more audiobooks together in the future, because this was pure bliss and I can’t wait to hear more of them.

Oh yeah Black and Quill are back and Meredith gives us their story.

We meet both in the previous books in this series. Black is the boss of a group of hired assassins and lives his life with no drama. Quill is a troublemaker in the best way. He is a loyal friend but finds himself in trouble. When Quill saw something he should not have, Black made a decision to keep him around and give him a job

Quill is a big flirt when it comes to Black. Black knows this but won't pursue anything because Quill works for him. The real reason is that in Blacks line of work anyone he cares for is a target to his enemies.

I love Quill on the outside He is fun loving and flighty but inside he hides so much pain. All he always wanted was someone to love him but unfortunately with the family he had it didn't happen. He had to fight his whole life for anything he has. Bullies made his life miserable and he was always afraid. So he retreats into himself and doesn't show his pain on the outside but Black sees it.

When Quill is hurt Black steps in and all bets are off. I enjoyed the way Quill tried to get Black to break with all his behavior. But Black saw all the pain behind it and couldn't get him out of his mind. Quill reminded Black why he does what he does. When Black finally gives into the attraction and tells Quill his secret it made me want to cry for him. Black portrays himself as so strong and beyond emotion but it was great to read how he opens up to Quill.

When Quill said "He gave me something I’d never had in my entire adult life. He gave me love’s truth. The truth was we, I, mattered, I was a gift. " I couldn't help but cry. Quill went throughout so much in his young life that he deserved every happy moment he could get and Black gave him that.

Black falls in love with Quill when he swore he wasn't meant to be happy because of the man he became. Quill thought he would never find his happy ending but with Black he has....

The story is fast paced and full of action. Both men point of views makes the story more enjoyable to read.

I would recommend this series and can't wait to see who Davidson will pick to write about next I am hoping Poe.
