Solomon Gray #4

Bury the Bodies

Rate this book
A missing son, a web of lies, a murder covered up.

Detective Inspector Solomon Gray is getting closer to finding his son, missing now for over a decade. He’s on the trail of a bent cop, Lewis Strang, who appears connected to the disappearance, all those years ago. But Strang is untouchable, a star of the Metropolitan police force. Once more, Gray must blur the line between right and wrong.

When the body of a young black man turns up on a Margate back street it seems to be yet another drug related crime. Margate is currently the focus of a special operation, codenamed Pivot, to take down local suppliers. But Gray discovers there’s more to the case than initially meets the eye.

And Gray has his own problems to deal with. First there’s the public investigation into the death of Gray’s ex-boss, DCI Jeff Carslake and then Gray’s estranged daughter, Hope, turns up on his doorstep – she’s pregnant and left the child’s father.

As Gray investigates he discovers the truth about Tom and who took him. A truth that is even more shocking than Gray ever expected…

Set in the once grand town of Margate in the south of England, the now broken and depressed seaside resort becomes its own character in this dark detective thriller, perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, and Peter James.

Bury The Bodies is the fourth book in the series featuring Detective Sergeant Solomon Gray. Buy it now to discover if, in this, the final chapter, Gray will finally find out what happened to his long missing son.

For those who are familiar with this series, I am so sorry to say this is the last of the series. For those not familiar, start at the beginning ... you won't be sorry.

DI Solomon Gray is dealing with problems that are coming at him from every angle. Professionally, he's investigating the murder of a young man in what is thought to be a drug related killing. Gray is one of the members of a group called Pivot ... their main objective is to take down all the local drug dealers.

On a personal level, his daughter has shown up on his doorstep. She's newly pregnant and has left her partner. While Gray is thriller that he will be a grandfather, he knows his daughter is extremely unhappy and doesn't know whether she wants the baby or not. Gray's current girlfriend is concerned that he won't let her fully into his life.

The biggest goal he has is to find his son who has been missing for more than 10 years. His last lead is to another cop ... but that cop is untouchable, a star of the Metropolitan Police Force.

As Gray investigates he discovers the truth about Tom and who took him. A truth that is even more shocking than Gray ever expected…

This is an excellent addition to the series ... with all the loose ends being tied up accompanied by shocking twists and turns. I'm sorry to see the series end.

Many thanks to the author / TBC Reviewer Grouo (FB) for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

If, like me, you found Sol in Book 1, Dig Two Graves, and devoured the rest of the series then you'll love installment number 4.

All the ends have finally been tied up from across the series, with a few shocks along the way, or have they? I don't want to add much more in way of explanation so as not to add spoilers but can the bodies really stay buried with one loose canon still on the run? There is finally an answer to Sol's missing son Tom but is that really the end?

I was so pleased to receive an ARC copy of this but sad as I thought this was the last we were going to hear from our favourite down beat, often grumpy, reluctant Detective, but the author has definitely left the door open for another installment (yes please).

Although this could be read as a stand alone book I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series.

A massive 5 stars again from me. Here's hoping this is not the last we've heard from Detective Gray.

I am emotionally drained! Gray and Hope, Gray and Tom, Gray and just about everybody. I've cried, I've laughed, I've gasped! How does Mr Nixon do it? The first book was a 5 star read, and then each subsequent book just got better and better. This is just sublime. I want to go back and kiss my primary school teachers and thank them for teaching me to read. You really appreciate what a special gift it is when presented with books by authors like Keith Nixon. This entire series is an absolute gem. The writing is masterful, the concept is compelling and the whole thing is a gift. Buy the entire series and give yourself the biggest treat. Bury the Bodies is the perfect cure for all that ails you. Simply brilliant

I'm a big fan of Solomon Gray as I'm always drawn to troubled men (if only this wasn't the truth)! Having followed Sol's adventures through the three previous books - Dig Two Graves, Burn The Evidence, and Beg For Mercy, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one! And happily, I wasn't disappointed.

Gray is still searching for his missing son, Tom. He's closer than he's ever been to knowing the truth, but it's still just out of reach. And then, like it does, life gets in the way - he's working on a new case, his daughter's pregnant and he has to testify at the inquest into the death of his late boss, and former friend. One good thing is that Sol has a new love interest. Well, maybe not love exactly, but certainly a lovely distraction!

The story is written mainly in the present, but with flashbacks to around the time Tom was abducted. The first chapter is full of OMG moments, and my heart was in my mouth! I was hooked immediately. And kept turning the pages until the end. And what an ending - I didn't know whether to smile or cry.

It was great to be back in Margate again. Having read several of Keith's books, although I've never been there, Margate feels like an old friend that I know well. It's almost a character in itself.

I can't really say much more without giving away spoilers. Yes, this is a crime story, and it's full of action, but ultimately this is a tale of a man searching for the truth. It's about betrayal. And it's about love. It's beautifully written, and for those of us who've followed Sol's journey, it answers some questions. And uncovers some nasty stuff. It's a brilliant, satisfying read, but I would suggest it's best enjoyed if you've read the previous books in the series which are also great). This could be the last we hear of Gray, but I have a feeling (and a hope) that it won't be!

Another awesome read!

Mr Nixon does it again, if your a follower of this series you will understand what I mean, if you haven't had the pleasure of being in the company of DS Solomon Gray before, may I suggested you remedy that right now. But I'd advise starting with book one, to fully appreciate the context and characters of this compelling series.

Multi layered and written in the - then and now - the highs and lows of Sol's personal life over a ten year span, starting with the kidnapping of his eight year old son. His search for the truth of Tom's disappearance is intermingled with his working life and colleague's he thought of as friends, it seems have their own agenda.

The web of lies and corruption is seriously scary, putting Solomon's life in serious danger on more than one occasion, giving me palpitations and sharp intakes of breath, I didn't realise I'd been holding!
There's lots going on in this story, that keeps your attention from page one, web's of lies and misleading avenues keep you second guessing the author's subtle hints.

My heart has gone out to this character DS Solomon Gray, in all four books. As his ultimate goal in life is to find out if his son is alive or dead and what happened to him. Unknowingly his disappearance is linked to his work, and the shocking truth comes to light in a letter he least expects!

At last Sol has evidence to complete his search, and find the answers he's spent years breathtakingly searching for, to the detriment of his own health!
A series with great characterization, brilliant storylines and believable plot, it's a must read for crime book lovers!

I was so disappointed when i realised that this was the last book in the series but it really does not disapoint. My biggest recommendation is if this is the first book you are reading of Solomon Gray please go back and start with book 1- you will thank me for it I promise.
I've read all 4 books over a short period of time mainly because I honestly couldn't put them down, each book has got better and better.
I cannot reccomend these books enough!

Amazing!!

If you haven't read books 1-3 I highly recommend doing so before reading this one.

Solomon Gray is back in his final story (hopefully not) and its a story that won't disappoint. Gripping from start to finish, it's a fantastic ebd to what has become one of my favourite book series'.

A mix of personal and professional story lines but story lines that you find hard to leave. I didn't want to put this book down. Detective Gray certainly worms his way into your heart and you'll find yourself thinking about him even when the book ends.

After being betrayed by a 'friend', a murder of a man occurs whilst Gray is still trying to process the betrayal. The murdered man appears to be involved in the drug scene but who killed him and why? A thrilling who-dun-it that sees Gray trying to process and deal with things in his life whilst also trying to be a good cop.

In this final chapter we finally discover what happened to Gray's son Tom although how Gray comes by the information will stay with him for life I think. 8 couldn't read through the book fast enough and actually read it through a second time before posting this review.

Overall, a fantastic book, one I hated having to put down. I really hope this isn't the last we see of Solomon Gray, but if it is then the series ended amazingly! I shall glady re read all these books again.

Thank you Keith Nixon for introducing me to the loveable Solomon Gray. Your story telling had me on the edge of my seat more than once and I look forward to reading more of your work. Hopefully Gray will make a comeback one day too.

Thank you TBC reviews and Keith for giving me the chance to read and review this series.

This is the fourth book in the Solomon Gray series from Keith Nixon and arguably the best yet. When I read the first few chapters of the first book, I wasn’t convinced that I would like the hero but his dry wit, steadfast moral compass (which doesn’t always align with laws or rules of police procedure) and undeniable talents as a detective make him an absorbing character. New crimes and investigations move this book along at a cracking pace, incorporating heroes and villains both new to the reader and familiar from the previous novels. Solomon has had more than his fair share of trials and tribulations during this series and I don’t think that it is giving too much away to say that he is put through the wringer again here!

Whilst this book would work as a stand-alone story, I would recommend that you read ‘Dig Two Graves’, ‘Burn the Evidence’ and ‘Beg for Mercy’ first and enjoy the books as a series. This book ties the series off neatly with story arcs across the four books concluding here. There is, I believe, potential for more from Solomon Gray but if Keith Nixon decides that his world-weary protagonist has been through enough, it would be a very satisfying conclusion.

We are back with Detective Inspector Solomon Gray, past events still play heavily on Sol's mind as an inquest is held into the death of Jeff Carslake, one time friend and superior. He was there at the end..he could have done something...after learning the truth Jeff was no longer a friend...

As usual the author seamlessly mixes a personal tale and a police case, both of which are utterly engrossing..so much so you get sucked in and for me it was a very easy book to demolish since I found it too hard to put down.

While Sol is trying to process his friends betrayal a murder of a young man occurs..This young man isn't as innocent as he seems when links to drugs are found..but who murdered him a why?

As the murder case deepens Sol is also dealing with personal issues, his daughter turns up unannounced and there's also a new love interest in his life. This makes it hard for him as he doesn't know who he can trust and he's scared to lose those he cares for.

The great thing about this book for the readers is we get a lot of closure as the author wraps up the disappearance of Sol's son Tom, how he comes to get the information he needs will no doubt stay with Sol forever. The last few chapters had me on the edge of my sofa!

It's another riveting read from an author I always have high expectations of..and he never fails to deliver.

The Solomon Gray series is more than just another crime novel. It's about a father searching for the truth..with the answers being closer to home than he would have thought. I challenge any one to try this series and not get hooked.

One thing I really like is short, sharp, informative chapters that grip you and keep you reading, which Nixon gives you in bucket fulls. Along with this you get a mind boggingly brilliant plot that will stick with you.

I've been trying to think of anything I didn't like about this book and there's only one thing that comes to mind..it had to end. I'm not sure if we will see Sol again but if we don't, his will be a journey I won't forget and will happily reread.

Finally after 3 books of intense suspense it seems Sol is finally on the right trail for finding the truth behind his sons’ disappearance over 10 years ago.
The thread of corruption, begun in book 3 (beg for mercy) continues in bury the bodies, with a death of his ex-boss being the subject of investigation and Sols continued involvement with the criminal underworld putting him right in the firing line once more.
This is (very sadly) the last book in the series for Sol (a shame because I thoroughly enjoyed being part of his life for 4 books) and it neatly ties up the loose ends from the first 3 books (including, finally, some closure on what happened to Tom).
However this tidying up of the threads does not lessen the read at all- in fact it comes as a relief that the good, bad and ugly all get their just desserts and the mysteries are resolved whilst still galloping through the solving of Sol’s final case.
This series was a fantastic read - I am now off to put everything else Keith Nixon has ever written straight onto my wish list (who am I kidding- I really mean straight in my shopping basket).

I read all 4 Solomon Gray books 1 right after the other. I hope this is not the last I will hear of him! I love how we are allowed to get to know him without any obvious ploys to make us like him. The ongoing sadness of the search for his son, the other very real personal issues, unexpected tragedies and betrayals show him to be a survivor. Not perfect. A survivor. He stumbles but keeps pushing through until he thrives. I love this character! The mysteries themselves are all well written and kept me tuned in to the very last page. No spoilers but... I have to say I did not expect that ending. It was what I hoped for, but I really really REALLY want to know what will happen next for Sol. I am having a hard time leaving things here! Great, great story! TBC (I hope...)

This is the fourth in this series and in my opinion they need to be read in order to get the most out of them.
Sol is still coming to terms with what happened, and still trying to find his son. Then a young man is murdered, county lines drug running is suspected. There seems to be a good suspect but he's got an alibi. Sol is working the case and as the story progresses things get messy and murky. allegiances are torn apart and friendships tested.
This book is riveting, fast paced action, emotionally gripping drama, and a well told story. The characters are believable for the most part and Sol is a likeable irascible sod. The threads from the previous books are tied up and there is closure of sorts for Sol and for us the reader. The only negative was the few editing errors in the version I read. I really hope we see more from Sol in the future.

This is book four in the Solomon Gray series, and I feel that you really do need to have read the previous books to truly understand why events of the past are such a key feature. Speaking of past events, I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the inquest into the death of Carslake, which I felt were really well written and atmospheric.

Another important past event is the disappearance of Sol’s son, Tom, which inevitably haunts him, as he holds himself accountable for Tom's disappearance. We have been riding along with this storyline since the first book, and I was genuinely pleased that we finally get all the details surrounding Tom’s disappearance. I felt the author had given me closure, as well as Sol!

As always with these novels, the storyline moves at a good pace as the plot twists and turns - I read this book in a couple of sittings. I'm really not sure if this is the last journey we will take with Sol, it if is - it’s as good as place to leave him as any.

Gray #4 and each book just keeps getting better. A special task force named Pivot is set up to combat the flow of drugs into Margate and London and seems to be showing some success. But a young man is knifed to death on a dark Margate street and what initially appears to be drug gang payback turns out to be so much more. Once again, Solomon Gray has his hands full, not only with Pivot and this murder but also his daughter, Hope, who appears on his doorstep, pregnant and seeking shelter.

This is a gritty, compelling story where allegiances are tested and very bad men are around every corner. And finally some closure.......some shocking closure........on his son Tom, who has been missing for more than a decade. Nixon did a masterful job of pulling together the subtle story lines from Books 1-3 into an astonishing finish.

And some great news for Solomon Gray fans as this is NOT the final book in this series as Keith Nixon has communicated that he has just started writing the untitled "Gray 5". Keith can you confirm ?

Well what can I say!!!! The fourth instalment in the DS Solomon Gray series and it was a corker.
Sol is, as I've said before, a great character, he works hard and bad stuff just keeps on happening to him as he trys valiantly to do his job while living without the family he loved so much. I don't want to give spoilers to those reading this before the book so I'm not saying anything else about the story.
This instalment is so well written and cleverly done bringing all the threads of the previous books to a conclusion even when I didn't realise I was still waiting for some of them.
I love Keith's patience with the story while writing it, knowing in his own head it would take time for things to evolve over the series, well I'm guessing he knew anyway, maybe it just happened.
Are there more books to come, I don't know. Do I hope there are? You bet I do.

Finally. As the description says, so I can’t be accused of being a spoiler, in this fourth installment in Nixon’s Solomon Gray series, we along with Gray find out what happened to his son. Or do we? The description above I stole from the book’s Amazon listing makes it appear as though this fourth book is the final book in the Solomon Gray series, and yet there is a book 5 also listed on Amazon. Hmm. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

In addition to searching for his son, trying to figure out what happened to him and who was responsible, Gray also has lots of other crimes he’s investigating and trying to bring the guilty parties in to pay for their crimes. Just when you think you have a handle on what’s going to happen, something changes and you’re wondering again. But maybe this will be the book where Gray finally figures something out that has been haunting him through the series thus far. I’m not going to tell you if he does or not. It’s a fun and intense read, regardless of the answer to that question.

I have read all 4 books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Following Sol, his relationship with Hope his daughter, his endless mission to find his son Tom and the cases he has had to solve with his team has been riveting. If this is the final installment, then I will be deeply sorry not to be able to follow Sol further.

I had the pleasure of reading Keith Nixon's Solomon Gray novels parts 3 and 4 (Beg for Mercy and Bury the Bodies) of a series. I would advise readers to read in sequence. Such a great series and 3 and 4 bring many of the threads of stories, interwoven through the series, to a conclusion. Nixon has, very cleverly, allowed Solomon's personality to emerge throughout the series. I felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend as I closed the final page of book 4. This series is part police procedural part human story of loss, grief and searching for answers. I don't want to give too much away but I would highly recommend this series. Readers will not be disappointed. 5 well deserved stars from me.

I was quite pleased with the way Nixon wrapped up the series, all questions answered and a solid story-line in the final installment to bring it all together. Gray's been through the ringer and one of my favorite protagonists in the crime genre; it all comes full circle. I was a bit disappointed in the ending though. Don't get me wrong; it was apt and fitting, but after a four book investment on my part, I just wish it had played out a bit differently. That's a personal preference though and I highly recommend this series.
