En 1658, el pedagogo y filósofo checo Jan Amos Komenský, Comenius en latín, publicó esta obra, considerada el primer libro ilustrado para niños, fiel a su premisa: «Si alguna cosa pudiera ser percibida por diversos sentidos, ofrézcase a todos ellos. […] Puesto que los sentidos son los fidelísimos proveedores de la memoria».

Una enciclopedia visual dividida en ciento cincuenta capítulos, cuya temática abarca «todas las cosas fundamentales en el mundo y de las actividades en la vida». Orbis Sensualium Pictus, también conocido como Orbis Pictus, recorre la totalidad del universo de su tiempo: Dios, la naturaleza, los objetos y los seres humanos, recreando los diferentes aspectos de su condición moral y social. El libro, concebido originalmente para el aprendizaje del latín, introdujo una propuesta novedosa y revolucionaria en su momento, al emplear las ilustraciones con fines didácticos.

About the author

Jan Amos Komenský (also Johann Amos Comenius, John Amos Comenius, Iohannes Amos Comenius) was a Czech teacher, educator and writer. He served as the last bishop of Unity of the Brethren and became a religious refugee and one of the earliest champions of universal education, a concept eventually set forth in his book Didactica Magna. He is considered the father of modern education. He lived and worked in many different countries in Europe, including Sweden, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Transylvania, the Holy Roman Empire, England, the Netherlands and Royal Hungary.

Jan Amos Komenský (aka Ioannes Amos Comenius) as Wikipedia puts it, "was a Czech philosopher, pedagogue and theologian who is considered the father of modern education".

My son has recently visited the Czech Republic and returned with a few Czech left over banknotes, so it so happened that Jan Amos Komenský stared back at me from 200 korunas. This pecuniary encounter brought to my attention Komenský/Comenius and one of his most famous and popular books Orbis Pictus, the first ever illustrated children textbook, written in Latin and published in 1658.

This particular edition is free on amazon, but even so it's not worth the time you spend on opening it on your Kindle and finding your way through a jungle of notes and prefaces to the beginning of the actual book, only to discover that this Kindle e-book version of this first ever illustrated textbook for children... DOESN'T actually have any pictures.

For now, I've acquired another $1.99 Kindle edition -- this one seems to have pictures. We'll see how this goes.;)

Mir fällt es schwer, das Buch in irgendeiner Form zu bewerten, jedoch hatte ich überraschenderweise Spaß beim Lesen. Ich schätze, ich bin froh über mein neues Wissen über die zeitgenössische Gesellschaft des 17. Jahrhunderts und deren Weltauffassung, die natürlich in einen christlich-religiösen Kontext gerahmt, aber gleichzeitig weltoffener war, als ich erwartet hätte. Nochmal lesen muss ich es wahrscheinlich aber nicht. (:

El "Orbis sensualium pictus" (1658), de Comenius, fue el primer texto ilustrado para niñas y niños, una obra pedagógica que aspiraba ser para todas las personas, sin distinción de ningún tipo. Es una enciclopedia con imágenes, que recopila lo que se consideraba en su momento todo el saber del mundo. Es, además, un excelente manual para aprender latín.

Contiene un total de 150 entradas que abarcan la figura de Dios, el origen del mundo, los animales y las plantas, las letras o las ciencias, todas primorosamente compuestas, como poemas o pequeños relatos.

Esta edición de Libros del Zorro Rojo es una belleza: pasta dura, bilingüe (latín-español), con reproducciones de las xilografías originales de Paulo Kreutzberger.

Interesante!...publicado en 1658, "Orbis Pictus" es una enciclopedia de imágenes enfocado a la educación de las niñas y niños de esa época, por que lo estuve leyendo Jan Amos Komenský fue un revolucionario en el área pedagógica, esta edición bilingüe (español/latín) del Zorro Rojo es hermosa desde el papel hasta los grabados.

I am reading along with Evan der Millner at latinum.org.uk. I highly recommend both Millner and Comenius to the beginning student of Classical Latin. Brilliant scholarship on both parts.

Iohannes Amos Comenius presenta un excelente manual para comprender la vida de finales del Siglo XVI y principios del XVII, con un trasfondo de Reforma religiosa que impacta directamente en la didáctica de la época. Comenius implementa el uso de imágenes para cada lección como ayuda visual educativa, sin dudas un pionero en este sistema dual que aun hoy, cuatro siglos después seguimos utilizando. Este libro si bien es díficil de leer por que sus enseñanzas nos son anacrónicas es un excelente compendio de vocabulario en Latín. Para aquellos que esta lengua les interesa, este libro es un imprescindible.

Con unas ilustraciones maravillosas e intrigantes, en conjunto de los comentarios adjuntos a cada una, uno como lector termina inmerso en ese mundo de cuatro siglos atrás, con detalles que resuenan aún hoy en día y otros que se sienten propios de otra realidad. Es un libro con un fin pedagógico más que recreacional, por lo que hay partes que resultan un poco aburridas. Sin embargo cumple su función y te deja alguna que otra reflexión sobre lo que realmente importa en esta vida.

Comenius' work has provided many meaningful conversations in my own classroom so it was great to get my hands on a copy to share with students and explore the illustrations and writing. My only critique from a publishing perspective is that it would have been more helpful to have the latin/english side by side in the formatting as at times it felt a bit jumbled. Great to practice my very weak latin skills, though!

Le doy las cinco estrellas por presentación y diseño, por respetar el contenido y grabados originales. El libro no hay mucho que decir más que es una joya para ir aprendiendo latín (medieval) nivel infantil claro pero ya es algo.

This book is great as a children's picture book. I can see why it is sometimes referred to as "the world's first picture book for children". In fact it may very well serve as an instructional picture book for adults who: 1) speak English as a second language and/or, b) interested in learning Latin. I learned a lot of Latin words and phrases while reading this book, and went through many a "lightbulb" moment when I detect similarities between an old English word and its Latin counterpart. Hello, etymology!

It's good light reading. Wouldn't recommend it to today's children though (owing to its archaic language and some flaws in the "facts" presented - this is a century old book btw, with outdated scientific theories).

It was the first widely used children's textbook with pictures and became the defining children's textbook for centuries. Entertaining read. Excellent first year vocabulary builder. Layout and teaching scheme are engaging. Would be nice to see an updated version of this for young students. Because we don't see many metal-smiths at work in our day, a page on the latin vocabulary of smithying is fun only at the level of novelty.

Esta obra didáctica de Comenio presenta al mundo a través de imágenes y textos para que sean aprehendidos por los niños de su época. Esta es una versión bilingüe y muy cuidada materialmente. Me parece una obra de utilidad para comprender el mundo de esa época y su mentalidad, y replantearse cuestiones de la didáctica moderna.

Libro maravilloso que te muestra como se percibía el mundo en aquella época y qué era lo que Jan Amos Komensky creia vital en la enseñanza primaria. Un libro increíble no solo para los que conocemos a este pedagogo pionero sino para cualquier persona interesada en las visiones del mundo a lo largo de la historia, además ilustraciones hermosas.

Tuto knihu jsem po půlročním úsilí konečně dočetla, ale dávat jí hodnocení si netroufám. Však také jak bych měla hodnotit učebnici? Kniha se čte lépe než jsem myslela, ale kdybych měla někomu doporučit něco od Komenského, určitě by vyhrál Labyrint :)
