Among the annals of missionary service around the world are countless true stories of intrepid men and women. They braved innumerable dangers, toils, tragedies, and triumphs and made important discoveries. These accounts should be read and passed on to future generations--not in order to praise these brave men and women, but to give glory to the name of Jesus Christ. It was for Him that their lives were dedicated and often sacrificed. These are men and women of whom the world "was not worthy" (Hebrews 11:38). May these stories of those who have gone before inspire and encourage the current and future ranks of Christians, both young and old alike, to give everything for the sake of Jesus Christ.
Good information about many missionary heroes, some of whom are less familiar to the average Christian. Great details, almost too much, about the activities of headhunters and cannibals in various parts of the world. I especially enjoyed the story of Kapiolani, queen of Hawaii, who faced down the "god" Kilauea by walking into the crater of the volcano. I did find the reading to be difficult and wordy in places, probably because it is a manuscript from a wordier time period of writing, republished from 1912. I read most of it over Christmas break and finished it this morning--first book checked out from our local library via Hoopla.
Good. Informative. I wouldn't have minded more story and less summation, but still a great introduction to the missionaries who gave their lives to share the truth of Jesus Christ. Always inspiring to read of the work of the Holy Spirit around the world.
These stories are all about missionaries I hadn’t ever heard of before, which was refreshing after revisiting the normal round of most common missionary stories that I’ve heard many times. It was encouraging to hear of the amazing ways God has worked in far corners of the world, and given incredible courage to many of His people.
I enjoyed this as a read-aloud because of the older writing style, with long sentences and interesting vocabulary. My kids (ages 9, 10, and 13) are great at learning from read-alouds because we do it all the time, and they were able to keep up fine - but this book might feel boring or confusing to some kids, especially anyone younger than high school age.
This is an excellent little book. It was written to inspire the younger generations to continue the good work of their forebears in building Christ kingdom here on earth. Each chapter records key aspects of the lives of true heroes, those who were willing to lay down their lives for thier brothers, which many in the end did. These heroes' lives are filled with adventure, faith, courage, and works of God's providence that should never be forgotten. The chapters are short enough that you may read one a day easily. (If you can bear to limit yourself to that) It also contains excellent resources if you would like to read more on these amazing lives.
I began this book a few years ago and recently pulled it back out to finish. Inspiring missionary stories. The book is divided into four sections Asia, Africa, America and the South Pacific each section including 5-6 stories of missionary heroes who many times gave their lives for the cause of Christ. Good read.
