ARC KINDLY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR DARCY BURKE!! I don't want to give too much away about this wonderful romantic friendship based and sensual love story . I loved the characters Felix Havers Earl of Ware and Sarah Colton. The two lead characters are very well written. You will fall in love with both of them. They are the type of couple you well root for while reading there story.
Sarah's parents want her to marry now. Sarah is a hat designer something a Viscounts daughter should not be doing. She wants to open her own milliner shop. In case she never finds a husband she wants to be able to support herself.
Felix the Earl of Ware has been best friends with Anthony Colton, since they were very young. Anthony is Sarah's older brother. Felix has always like and been friends with Sarah too although she was much younger. As they grew older Felix and Sarah became close adult friends always chatting and able to confide in one another.
This couple is having what I call a Slow Burn. They are at a party given by Ware and playing a kissing game that ignites this Slow Burn between them into a blazing fire. I loved them as a couple. They were a perfect fit. I also, loved that Darcy Burke the author did not use gimmicks to advance the storyline. She use relationship building between Felix and Sarah. They grew in love with each other by confiding in each other, doing things together and helping one another. I love the way there story is written it is believable and not rushed into sex. They have very little if any conflict because they are first and foremost friends. I liked that they trust one another.
The only thing I didn't like is Sarah is almost 24 years old and I am so sick of the Spinster storyline. It is so overdone. These aristocratic lady's married very young. Some were ever betroth at birth with another aristocratic son. I guess its hard for a women of today to imagine 15 to 18 year old females being married and having marital relationships but they did. I also missed the appearance of Lady Dunn. Other then that this was a Excellent story. There is one very sad part in the story but Felix is there to help his two friends Anthony and Sarah overcome there grief.
I am so sorry this is the final book in The Untouchables. I will miss this series.
The friendship between the hero and the heroines brother and the heroine.
Kind of interesting hero.
➖ What I disliked:
Vague character description of both the main characters. (Apart from vague eye color and hair color descriptions much of the characters description/character appearance/physical description are vague for/about both the main characters …unfortunately this is also true for many of the other books/main characters in this series.)
Some parts dragged and were a little stilted.
Many parts of the story was too anachronistic/too modern.
Somewhat underdeveloped and lacking in depth.
The why and how of why the main characters feel in love was lacking.
The romantic build up and chemistry was lacking and felt stilted… there was no real “spark” between the couple and the jump/shift from friends to lovers felt unconvincing and forced.
Annoying heroine. (Some of the heroines decisions and actions were somewhat nonsensical and foolish and sometimes also contrary.)
Too much focus and repetition on and about the heroines hats and clothing.
Too little focus on the romance between the main characters.
The inconsistencies.
Some serious issues are more or less glossed over… such as childhood neglect, child abuse (beatings), alcoholism etc.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋💋 If you follow The Untouchables Series you’ll have been waiting with baited breath for this one . Felix , The man who is always there in the background, always cheerful and giving pleasure but we never were told anything about him till now . Your going to adore Felix more than before by the time you finish this book , he’s the same rakish , attentive, adorable Rogue , he’s always around to help and provide distraction and entertainment. But who is he really Sarah and Felix make a sweet and perfectly adorable couple, if she can just break through the shell and find the man beneath, the man who can love and devote himself to one woman for life . This is another excellent addition to the series , one not to be missed . I received an advance copy of this book and chose to submit a review
Series: The Untouchables #12 Publication Date: 2/26/19
The final book in the Untouchables series presents us with the much-anticipated story of Felix and Sarah. Felix is the best friend of Sarah’s brother Anthony and they have all known each other their whole lives. The story is well-written and stays on-point, but is, well, just a bit on the lackluster side. As I read, I kept expecting something to happen, but it never did. What we have is a straight-forward, friends-to-lovers story with little angst, no danger, no villain and no real excitement. This is a lovely story, but I think it could have benefitted from a prologue depicting Felix’s childhood and the things his father did because I think I learned those things far too late in the book.
Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, Duke of Distraction, has arranged a series of races over the last couple of books and they are featured in this book as well. They are fun and competitive and I enjoyed the competition and the participants.
Miss Sarah Colton’s parents think it is time she is married and they are tired of her single status. Her mother declares that she will marry and soon! Then, of all things, to Sarah’s great humiliation, they ask Felix if he’d marry her. Both Felix and Sarah are aghast and both immediately shout “NO”. Sarah has nothing against marriage, it is just that IF she marries, she wants to marry for love. In the meantime, she is making plans for her future as a spinster. She wants to open a millinery shop and she has all of the plans in place – she has the manager lined up (so she isn’t associated with trade) and she has almost enough money. Betting on the winners in Felix’s races have definitely contributed to her funds – all she needs is a location.
When Sarah’s parents ask Felix to marry Sarah, he can’t believe it. Everyone knows he will NEVER, EVER marry under any circumstances. However, he does volunteer to help Sarah find someone she can love and marry. He sets out with single-minded focus and assures that she meets a number of eligible and appropriate bachelors. Then, when they cancel the races in town, he decides to move the races to the estate of the Marquess of Northam – they’ll make it into a two- or three-day event and Felix will invite even more eligible bachelors. All goes as planned until there is a snafu in a kissing game Felix planned. Sarah is supposed to end up kissing Viscount Blakesley, but a mix-up occurs and she ends up kissing Felix. Sparks fly and fireworks explode for both of them. Then, when they discover who they kissed, they are appalled, dismayed, shocked – and they both decide that they’ll just forget that it happened. Right! We all know how that will go.
Then, the unthinkable happens and it throws both Sarah and Anthony into the deepest depths of despair. Their parents were murdered on their way to Oaklands, their country estate. They were going there to oversee some repairs that Anthony was supposed to have handled but postponed for a few days. Anthony blames himself and takes to drinking – all day every day. Felix visits every day and tries to help, but nothing seems to move either Anthony or Sarah. So, after about a month, Felix shows up one day and announces that they are going with him to his country estate, Stag’s Court.
The time at Stag’s Court throws Sarah and Felix into close proximity and both find themselves unable to forget that kiss they’d shared. They end up sharing more and more kisses – and more. Sarah realizes that she’d be happy being married to Felix quite early on, but Felix is adamant that he will not marry. We don’t really find out why until almost the last page and then it is sort of glossed over and we hear nothing of the mental abuse he must have suffered from his uncle. I would have preferred to understand Felix much earlier on in the book.
There is a wonderful epilogue that brings all of the characters from the earlier books together at a ball given by Lady Eugenia Satterfield. We get to see them in all of their happiness and – expecting – states.
I enjoyed the book and I think you will too. While this is the final book of the Untouchables series, be on the lookout for a new spinoff series, Untouchables: Spitfire Society, coming soon.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have loved the Untouchables Series and have looked forward to Sarah and Felix's story since meeting them in the Duke of Seduction. Felix Havers, the Earl of Ware is such a likeable character, but apparently, I misjudged his motivations, this story is completely different than I expected and I am still reeling and trying to come to grips with the events and revelations found within this book's pages!
Felix Havers and Sarah Colton have known each other for years, they are friends and share an almost platonic type of relationship. Felix looks out for Sarah and is the first one to sign her dance card - he likes her and thinks of her as family. So when her parents press her to marry and suggest that Felix would be a good match - they both revolt. But then Felix does what he does best and offers to help Sarah find love or at least help her become independent. Sarah is not opposed to marriage, but wants love and if she can't find that, she would like to open a millinery and design hats, in a perfect world she would do both! So when Felix learns of her dreams and offers to help her achieve them, she readily accepts.
The horse races he arranged in the previous book are ready to wrap up in this story, but when one of the participants has an accident, it seems like he will have to cancel the finals - but then an idea takes hold - he can finish the races AND help Sarah find love - he will just move the races to the Marquess of Northam's estate and throw a house party with hand picked guests for Sarah's perusal!
The house party is a success, and when a kissing game goes awry, Felix and Sarah share a kiss, things between them begin to change, but before they can really consider what that may mean - tragedy strikes and hurls Sarah and her brother Anthony into despair. Desperate to help them, Felix whisks them away to his estate. Where they all must come to terms with their loss and grief.
I thought this was an interesting story and Felix and Sarah are incredibly likeable leads and I don't doubt their love, but it was not the grand passion I had hoped for, it was more of a very gentle transition from friends to lovers. The book was well written and flowed well, but it lacked the action and spark between the H/h that I have come to expect from Ms. Burke. There is lots of emotion, some heated love scenes, cameos from the other "Untouchables", the definite possibility of Anthony getting his own story and an epilogue was the highlight of the book for me, that has me excited for the spin-off series. So overall, I liked the book, but it wasn't what I had hoped for as an end to the series.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an uncorrected eARC that was provided to me.

But when tragedy strikes, can they heal each other or will the demons of Felix’s past consume them both? This book was aptly named, it was very distracting and not at all what I've come to expect from this series. I found the beginning very enticing the middle somewhat confusing and the end somewhere in the middle. It is by far my least favorite title from this series and this author. It barely got a 4 of 5 stars in my opinion. I have come to expect much better from Darcy Burke. I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily. Thank you for this edited version. It reads much more smoothly than the first one I received. I could barely finish the first ARC I got of this book and I had expected it to be much better. This is definitely an upgrade and gets 4.35 of 5.0 stars. This series has been a favorite. I received a second version and I enjoyed this version much more. I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
As with the other books in this series, I was immediately all in.
I really liked Sarah and Felix. She knows what she wants out of life and she’s ready to go after it. He’s unsettled in life and going through the motions. I absolutely loved that Sarah and Felix had known each other forever. Sarah’s northern Anthony was interesting and of course all of the previous characters are great.
Plot wise it was good? I was definitely here for everything until a particular event happens and propels the story in an entirely different direction. I did struggle a bit with the jump to love. With their familiarity of each other, I was expecting more of a sudden OMG moment when it came to feelings. Instead it was an odd build up of lust and then some somewhat awkward and forced conversations.
My main complaint is that we didn’t get any sort of info on Felix and his childhood until the very end and then it was a brief mention. Okay, so there were minor mentions here and there, it wasn’t enough to paint a complete picture.
Overall, it was a quick read with characters I really liked. Even though I did enjoy it, I still can’t stop thinking there was a spark missing.
**Huge thanks to Darcy Burke for providing the arc free of charge**
Sarah is determined to live an independent life, and let social expectations be damned. But when everything comes crashing down around her, she realises the only bright point left, is life-long friend Felix.
I received a free copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. This is the twelfth book in the Untouchables series, but it can be read as a stand-alone (with the minor exception of the epilogue).
Sarah is an independent young woman, who doesn't want to marry out of obligation to family and society. If she finds love, that is a different matter; but as that has not happened yet, she is preparing for spinsterhood. Instead of sitting as a burden on her parents and brother, Sarah is determined to turn her passion for hat design into a profitable business.
Felix is her brother's best friend, and has known Sarah for most of their lives. He has always treated her as a little sister; and he takes it upon himself to try and find Sarah a man that she can fall in love with. As Felix is at the helm of many social engagements, it shouldn't be hard to round up some suitable bachelors for her... but after a simple mistake in mystery kissing game, Felix can't help but feel that no other man will be good enough for Sarah. It's only a pity that he has sworn off marriage.
This book started off as a bit of light-hearted fun, as we follow the races that Felix has arranged for the gentry; and the party designed to give Sarah more interactions with suitable bachelors. Things quickly take a serious turn, when tragedy strikes Sarah's family; and soon Felix is the only bright point on the horizon. It was endearing to see how Felix makes it his duty to support his two closest friends, doing whatever it takes to make their grief easier. He becomes a pillar of support for Sarah and her brother, and wants nothing in return.
I really liked Sarah for the most part. She has her own opinions, and isn't afraid to follow her desires. She recognises the constraints of society, and doesn't want to upset people, but she knows that isn't the life for her. I loved her passion for building her own business; and I loved when she decided to break convention and embrace her desires. She has already resigned herself to spinsterhood, why shouldn't she enjoy passion, at least once?
The not-so-good I wasn't a fan of the writing - it's good, but I felt the tone wasn't right for the period. It felt too modern, and too American. On the back of that, I thought that society (and Felix in particular) came across as very flippant. I liked Felix, I just never saw him as a 19th century Duke.
There is little plot beyond the getting together of Sarah and Felix. There is a theme of grief and loss, which is very well done. There is also a stab at something under-handed, in that Felix's odious uncle wants him to remain unmarried, so the title can go to Felix's cousin. It's not a spoiler, it wasn't subtle.
I think the thing that put me off most was the ending. Felix doesn't want to marry (as someone who is totally opposed to marriage myself, I can sympathise with him), and he has pretty good reasons why. He also doesn't like to celebrate his birthday - again, very good reason. Despite all the time and emotional energy Felix has freely given to them, in the last few chapters, Sarah and her brother bully Felix into getting married and having a birthday party. It was like, Sarah finally found out about Felix's background, and finally understood him; which gave her the right to ignore everything he wanted. After starting as such a strong character, she lost a million points.
Overall, it's good for a light read, but I won't be continuing with the series.
I must admit to finding the Duke of Distraction sort of distracting. How can such a seemingly strong storyline become less? I applauded Sarah Colton's desire to setup her own millenary establishment as a safeguard for her future if she remained a spinster. I was appalled by her willingness to give up not only her dream, but the promises she'd made to a milliner's assistant. Sadly lacking sense of loyalty here. (Oh wait, I don't really need a job not like the assistant milliner I was about to poach!) But the games Sarah played with Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, who has "vowed never to love", her seduction of him, was just a bit too over the top for me. Mind you she is fighting the curse for all young women of the period (a least in many romance novels) of having her parents decide whom she would marry within a set timeline. So what's a girl to do? Felix, with all his deeply hidden hangups, is endearing and he brightened up the way. Thankfully Sarah's noted hat design gift is given a nod. That pleased me. Presenting all the cast for a final curtain call was not really necessary, but hey, on the other hand, why not?
The Duke of Distraction is the 12th book in The Untouchables series and why do I have a feeling it sounded like the last :(. The end was definitely like a send off with all the previous hero and heroines making a ’pregnant’ appearance! We witnessed a reunion at Lady Eugenia Satterfield’s famous ball, and it hit all the right nostalgic buttons and will have the readers going back to revisit all the previous books.
Felix and Sarah had my attention in the Duke of Kisses and their pairing, though seemingly unlikely, had the makings of an unforgettable HEA. And it was! It helps that I had only recently read the previous book, and was so ready for Felix’s book and intrigued how this couple would ‘find’ each other. As I said ‘unlikely pairing’... as in the previous book, and in this their own, they remained just very good friends till forever… not one inkling for an awareness or any interest in the other … and then they kissed ‘accidently’, and everything fell into place. Sarah was an incredibly understanding and generous heroine who just loved unconditionally. Her desire to get into ‘trade’ and her gift of designings hats, was an interesting twist to the story. The races, as in the previous books were depicted brilliantly and makes the reader request for them in following books [if there are any :( ]
Felix was tormented with his past and had the usual issues with begetting an heir and not falling in love and all of that which was quite smoothly sorted (I expected the uncle to get evil and try to bump off Sarah!). There was no great twist for him to realize his love, and as I said, it was written smoothly and effortlessly by Darcy Burke. A lovely story and an tempting end where one is tempted to go back to Titus’s book and start reading all 12 books again.
Count on Burke to break a heart as only she can. Just when you think the pain is too much, she gives a reason to smile again. Embittered by love, Felix and Sarah are about to discover that no one is immune to it's power. Although not as passionate as some of the previous books in the series, The Duke of Distraction proves it can definitely hold it's own. Sarah and Felix have a romance that was years in the making and their hearts have decided to finally take flight. Can they friendship survive the obstacles that stand in the way? This couple will get under the skin before they steal your heart. What started as slow is destined to leave a lasting impression.
Miss Sarah Colton has decided she'll marry for love or not at all. Despite her parents pressuring her to marry, she hopes to make her own future by using funds she gathered from wagering on carriage races to open a millinery shop. It's a great plan until her parents find out about it and throw out an ultimatum: she must choose someone to marry or they'll choose someone for her.
Lord Felix Havers, the Earl of Ware, is a total cynic when it comes to love and wants no part in it. Ever. He is the master of entertainments and parties for his friends and conceals any emotion behind his charming facade. When his best friend's sister, Sarah, needs to find a husband, Felix vows to make her the most sought after lady in London. Of course he'll keep his own heart well free of the fray; he's seen what love and marriage did to his father and uncle and refuses to let the same fate befall him. He's always restless anyway and very easily bored, but he's charismatic and well-liked and he'll certainly never be lonely. Or hurt.
Having known Felix for nearly all of her life and knowing his lack of desire to ever marry, he's the only man Sarah really feels comfortable around since she doesn't have to worry about impressing him. This means Felix's plan to help her find a suitable husband actually has merit and Sarah decides to accept his help. However, neither expects the attraction that develops between them. When tragedy strikes her family, it is Felix who is there to help Sarah and her brother, Anthony, but his own issues seem sure to keep them from having any happy ending. Both Sarah and Felix insist they don't wish to marry and yet they could be the best thing to ever happen to each other.
I was highly anticipating this one after meeting Felix and Sarah in the previous book. I knew Felix's charisma had to be hiding some inner turmoil and I couldn't wait to find out just what that was. He is always keen to provide pleasure and entertainment for others, distracting himself from his own life and keeping a solid wall around his feelings that even he won't truly acknowledge. I loved that Sarah saw him for the truly generous person he is and tried to show him that same generosity. For a total cynic, Felix turned out to be a surprisingly likable hero with a heart of gold hidden well beneath his surface.
Sarah is struggling to find out who she really is, not what others have expected her to be and Felix is fighting to hide the true self that Sarah insists on bringing out in him. Felix turned out to be so much more than he initially seemed and was rather endearingly terrified of being hurt or helpless. These two are both just lonely people who don't even realize how lonely they truly are and I was a total sucker for it.
I received an advanced review copy of this book and voluntarily left a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Untouchables series has been an amazing collection and this last story is about Felix and Sarah. Felix appeared in many of the other books and but no much was said about his history. He is just so darn lovable and always seemed to be helping others. But it comes out what he has endured and why he never wants to marry. Sarah has know Felix forever because he is her brother Anthony's best friend. He has always been there to dance with her and just a lot of fun. When her parents insist she find a husband, Felix is there to help her. Oh yes, not to marry her as her parents suggest! Unexpectedly, they wind up at a house party he plans and hopes to find her a match. But when they are having a fun game with everyone, they end up kissing, and oh that sets a new awareness in motion! There is a tragedy and some strong emotions that come out and these two slowly try to come to terms with their feelings. I can honestly say it touched my heart at some places and I could only cheer these two on to find their happy ending. What a memorable series by Darcy Burke who knows just how to pull all the elements together for the perfect historical romances I love to read.
4.5 Stars After witnessing how love embittered his uncle and broke his father, Felix Havers, Earl of Ware vows never to love. He conceals his emotions behind a wall of wit and charm, and is celebrated as the master of entertainments—parties, picnics, races. When his best friend’s wallflower sister needs to find a husband, he promises to help her. Miss Sarah Colton has given up on the pursuit of marriage. Her parents want her to marry & give her an ultimatum: choose a husband or they’ll do it for her. She accepts Felix’s help, never imagining their scheme will ignite a mutual attraction neither of them dare indulge. At last Felix & Sarah have their story & what a lovely story of friends to lovers. The kiss in the closet what a turning point! This is the twelfth in the series, whilst it could easily be read on its own I’d recommend the whole series & the community the author has built, I loved the epilogue which was a very special update on all of the couples & a teaser for what’s to come. Another lovely read that had me enthralled & I read it in under a day. The characters were very well portrayed, I’ve always liked Felix, his journey to finding love wasn't easy but whilst emotional was very satisfying. I’ve also liked Sarah, she’s perfect for Felix. I hope Anthony will have his HEA. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
THE DUKE OF DISTRACTION by Darcy Burke is book 12 in The Untouchables Series. This is the story of Sarah Colton and Felix Havers, Earl of Ware. This can be a standalone book if you wish to do so. Felix is Sarah's brother best friend, so in turn her friend also. They have know each other for a long time. Sarah have given up on marring and has set her mind to being the owner of a millinery shop but her parents have other ideals. When they report she either marry of her choice or they will choose for her...they even ask Felix to marry her. Felix tells them no, but he will help her find a husband. But a mistaken kiss sets them to seeing each other as something more than friends but Felix has sworn to never marry. Something tragic happens setting things off for Sarah and her brother which turns things into a different direction. Enjoyed their story.
Miss Sara Colton wanted to marry for love or not at all. She had amassed enough money to open her own millenery shop. Everything was going according to plan, until her parents decide that it's high time she got married, even if they have to pick a husband for her. Her brother Anthony and his best friend Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, won't have it. And so Felix, THE DUKE OF DISTRACTION, will help her find someone to love.
Darling, adorable Felix, how eagerly I had been awaiting his story! Unfortunately, the book was not what I had hoped for. I loved the friendship Sarah, Anthony, and Felix shared; there was real affection and respect, and in a strange way, it proved to be somewhat of a problem later on. Even though I was told about it, I never felt a shift in the relationship between Sarah and Felix, unless you count the "lightning bolt" moment. It seemed as if two siblings had suddenly fallen in lust with each other after a somewhat contrived event gave them an opportunity for a little passionate episode. Felix had the usual hero's aversion to marriage, and Sarah was "his best friend 's little sister". Allow me a moment to rant here. This is not aimed solely at Darcy Burke, but I noticed a trend recently in romance novels, which I find very annoying. Do the authors - and/or publishers - deem it necessary to remind us countless times of the trope(s)? I know what the trope is, you told me already, I haven't forgotten, could we please get on with the story, not just a "best friend's little sister" story.
The progression from friendship to something else was thankfully not rushed, but it felt forced. I was rather shocked at Sarah's behaviour when the first kiss - and groping - occurred and she turned into a wanton. The "tragedy" was extremely convenient, requiring some obligatory "distracting", and Sarah's subsequent decisions made no sense to me. I thought she acted foolishly, but changed her mind according to what the plot dictated, I suppose. Even more frustrating was that, while there were detailed descriptions of very minor characters, and extensive and vibrant ones of Sarah's hats, there was precious little about the main couple. Although I dislike endless flowery descriptions of the main protagonists, I do enjoy having some idea of their appearances. Up until 65% in the book - when we finally get to know that Sarah has blue eyes - we only knew that she was shorter than Felix (no big surprise there), and that she had "bow-shaped lips" (of course!). At 88%, at last, we are told that her hair is dark; that's about the extent of Sarah's description, and it's disconcerting! (But at least, you will fare better than I did). Around the 75% mark is really where the author lost me as some inconsistencies crept in, again for obvious storyline purposes. A crucial event was even remarked upon by a character as being inconsistent with what had been done, and it was casually dismissed! I thought the last quarter of the book unsatisfying and rather unpleasant. And what was that epilogue all about? The introduction to an upcoming series?
To my consternation, THE DUKE OF DISTRACTION just didn't work for me. I felt it lacked the originality, the creativity, the excitement, the unpredictability, and the charm that had made The Untouchables so special and memorable. If you're looking for a well-written, steamy, and safe "best friend's little sister" historical romance, it might be the right book for you.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Duke of Distraction is the 12th and final book in The Untouchables series by Darcy Burke. You definitely don't need to read the other books to fully understand and enjoy this one.
Sarah Colton's parents are starting to get pushy about her getting married. She only wants to marry for love and as she hasn't found the 'one' yet she is setting her sights on going into trade. She wants to open a millinery shop and she will be the one to design and make all the hats. It's not the done thing for her class to go into trade so when her parents find out about her scheme they give her an ultimatum. Either she finds a husband to her liking and quickly, or they will choose for her.
Felix Havers, the Earl of Ware doesn't ever want to marry. He definitely doesn't believe he is capable of love. His father hated him, his uncle lives in a bitter marriage. Felix wants none of that. So he puts on a happy face and spends his time making life good for his friends. He is the one they turn to when they need cheering up. Even his best friends don't realise just how hurt he has been in life.
Felix has known Sarah all her life, they have practically grown up together, and he is Sarah's brother, Anthony's, best friend. So when he discovers that Sarah needs help to find somebody to love he decides to help her. He decides to throw a house party where amongst others he will invite a small group of eligible men who Sarah agrees might be somebody she could love. And from there the fun begins. What neither Sarah or Felix expect to happen is for them to start looking at each other in a new light. Felix can't give in to his feelings of attraction because he isn't capable of love. Sarah can't give in to her feelings either because well, he's like a brother to her...isn't he?
I have read quite a few of the books in this series, and I intend to eventually read them all. Each one I have read, including this one, are an absolute delight to read. They have just the right amount of drama, angst, humour and of course love and passion to make a fabulous feel-good story/series. Felix and Sarah's growing romance was beautiful, they are perfect for each other and I had to read as quickly as I could to see how they could have their happy ending. Which of course they did, but you will have to read for yourself just how it came about. I am sad that the series has come to an end, but at least I can read and re-read the books at my leisure.
Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, never wants to fall in love, marry or do something like that because of what he went through with his uncle and aunt. They aren't even friendly with each other and are living separately He loves to entertain his friends and when his best friend's parents suggest him to help their daughter a husband, he agrees. After he disagreed to marry her. Sarah, Felix's best friend's sister, gave up on marriage after two seasons. If she'd ever married, she'd marry for love and for nothing else. So she saved her money to open a millinery shop and design her own hats. During a house party they are playing a kissing game and because of an accident, they end up together ... it's the beginning of the end for both of them, their independence, their future plans ...
I absolutely enjoyed this book, couldnt book it aside. Well written, well developed characters.
I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. The Duke Of Distraction is the 12th book in Darcy Burke’s The Untouchables Series. Characters from the other books appear in this book but you could read it as a stand-alone. Felix Havers, Earl of Ware aka the Duke of Distraction learned to cope with his feelings by burying them behind a wall and seeking out endless entertainment. He never lets anyone to close and has no plans to marry or have a family. His best friends sister Sarah Colton has given up on looking for a husband and is making plans to open up her own millinery shop, when her parents give her an ultimatum find a husband or we will find one for you. Felix, who is like part of the family to her offers to help and it seems to be going well until due to a mixup in a parlour game they kiss and everything changes. I enjoyed this story and it’s exploration about how one deals with feelings and loss. Skip the epilogue as it’s just an endless listing of characters int he other books and does not add anything to the story. Medium Steam. Publishing Date February 26, 2019 #NetGalley #TheDukeOfDistraction #DarcyBurke #DarcyBurkePublishing
I put off reading this because I did not want the series to end. This story has one of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers. I thought that Felix's and Sarah's relationship was very well written and showed how much they cared for each other before the feelings became romantic. I thought that having Felix help Sarah with what was going on in her life made perfect sense in the context of their history, and having Sarah in turn help Felix was just perfect. I would highly recommend this series to all who enjoy historical romance!
The Duke of Distraction is book 12 in the Untouchables series by Darcy Burke. I have enjoyed all of the Untouchables books. But I felt that this one fell short of the mark. Felix Havers, the Earl of Ware is an agreeable character, but I kept hoping for more of a physical description of him. There is a brief one half way through the book, but not much. Felix also carries some secret that affects him negatively, but I couldn’t really understand the depth of it. I also wasn’t a fan of Sarah Colton the heroine. Her willingness to callously use men made her self centered and grasping. Her willingness to use an old friend like Felix was just awful. I enjoyed the scene of parlor games even though I had not heard of them before. There were some laugh out loud moments. Overall, I felt this book lacked something that the other books have had - solid character development with logical responses to life around them. I was given a copy of this book from Netgalley
OMG !! I can't believe The Untouchables has reached its last book, and once again, we fell in love with the improbability of this romance.
Felix Havers, Earl of Ware, didn't want to know about falling in love. Not because he did not believe in this feeling. Maybe he believed too much. But after seeing how love destroyed people so close to him, he decided it would be safer just to have fun without giving in to his heart.
Sarah Colton, once considered a wallflower by society, and friend of Felix's sister, found herself obliged by her parents to find a husband. She just wanted to be an independent woman, and of course, a husband would only disrupt her. When she decides to accept Felix's help in finding a husband, they did not expect what they feared the most could happen right there between them. How to deny such attraction, especially in the face of a tragedy? 4,5 stars
I encountered the leading couple in the previous book in this series The Duke Of Kisses, Felix Havers is known for the entertainments he holds. The carriage races he rules were very detailed and entertaining, but an accident puts a end to it, but few things will deter him to give it up if he does not want. He is a man living for amusement. He refuses to feel anything too deep, since he saw first hand how love can break someone and hurt those around. He thinks he is safe with only mild sentiments, why he enjoys cheering others if he does not get involved in the middle, so he takes matter in hands and is the one always proposing new entertainments and games. Sarah Colton is happy as she lives, trying to plan for her future, even if it is one of a spinster. Why she fights back when her parents decide she has to get married or they will make the decision for her. They have known each other since they were kids, and never saw the other in a romantic interest, but a kissing game will tilt their well ordered life and open them to a new world of sensations. It was a cute tale of friends to lovers, an unexpected kiss changed everything for them, making them realize there is more than meets the eyes about another, it was a bumpy ride as a tragedy strikes and moves their life to a darker path where they will have rethink their future’s expectations and move over their own griefs. I loved Felix, always cheering the others and never thinking he is worth care and love while Sarah’s stubbornness did upset me at time but it was her way of grieving and she put herself back on the right track.
Felix and Sarah are lifelong friends who find themselves attracted to each other after an accidental kiss. The author, in this the 12th of the series, has not lost any of the Joie de vivre that has been present throughout all her books. She captures the essence of friendships and what it means to stand by each other. She builds the relationships one brick at a time and allows the characters to grow and blossom into beautiful and lovable people. When Felix and Sarah give in to their attraction they build that fire which culminates ultimately in marriage and a happily ever after.
This is the last Untouchables book, and I am so so so sad! I'm going to miss them! I look forward anxiously to the coming spin off series. I know it will be brilliant.
Felix and Sarah of course, have my heart. Friends to Lovers is such a fun trope! I love the entire idea of these two. Growing up together, never seeing this deep love coming, and then, BAM! Slapped with the adoration stick.
Felix. I adore him. He has been numb, emotionally, his entire life. This began, and endures, as a survival tactic. Poor darling. He has just been waiting to be loved for his own self. Sarah is absolutely Ah-Mazing. She just loves Felix. Just loves him so hard.
This book was a breath of fresh air for me. It was exactly what I needed to kick me back into loving historical romance. Nothing about this story was predictable. I expected some things, that never did happen, and absolutely NEVER saw the plot twist coming. (A true rarity!) I very much enjoyed this story. I want to go back and read the whole series again.
I highly recommend starting at the beginning and reading through this series.
This story shows how a traumatic childhood may affect people in later life. Felix, Earl of Ware, was one such person. Felix distracted others by providing various means of entertainment but never engaging his feelings. Sarah Colton was being pressurised into getting married by her parents, when all she wanted was to open a millinery shop. Sarah was a creative person and loved making hat and accessories. She needed a husband who would appreciate her skills and who would love her. She has always been friends with Felix, as he was her brother’s best friend. This is an enjoyable story about two friends who could become more, if only they will submit to their feelings. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Duke of Distraction is the 12th book in the Untouchable Series by Darcy Burke. I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley but that did not influence the following review. I enjoyed this last book in the series and very sad to see the Untouchable Series End. I know though Darcy will somehow continue on with Characters very much like the 12 gentleman in this series. Who knows they might even be related! Felix Havens the Duke Of Ware is a bit of a complex character as he is quiet about his personal life yet full of fun and entertainment in his social life. He stages many of the entertainments that the young men in his circle attend. Parties, the races where women are also invited to race in and other various escapades that the ton talk about long after they are over with. Felix has no intentions of marrying as he has only been exposed to a marriage from Hell his Aunt and Uncle seem to have. His parents died when he was young and they were his guardians and still help run his estates. He wants their son, to eventually inherit the dukedom as he is in no want for marriage or children. Sarah Colton is a Dukes daughter and her brother is Anthony is the best friend of Felix. They have all grown up together with Felix becoming a family member as he spends so much time with the family. Sarah the strong minded girl want to marry but only for Love. She is 24 and after quite a few seasons she doesn’t hold out much hope for a good match and secretly is planning to open a millinery shop as she has a great talent to make the most unique and beautiful hats. She has to do it undercover though as her parents will have never go along with her going into a trade and not marrying. As you have to surmise that will be a moving force between her plans and her parents no nonsense demand she get a husband fast or they will find one for her. Felix steps in after her parents try to make a match between Felix and herself in the most awkward scene you can imagine there could be for the young couple. He want to help her when she tells him of her dreams of only marrying for love and going into trade. Of course no one must know not even his best friend Anthony. I don’t like telling the story in the review but he does try to help her make a match but it becomes a half hearted attempt when other men come into the picture. Some games at a house party also plays a part in softening Felix outlook on Love & Marriage and when unexpected circumstances happen Felix has to step into a role that jeopardizes relationships that have endured these many years. I loved the friends to something more themes. I love the bantering and comfortable scenes that take place when all are close and trusting friends. As in all the stories in this series the Dukes each gets an addition to their title of Duke. Felix does his best to cover his emotions and to avoid more serious relationships. He uses distraction to steer you away from any conversation that gets too close to his real feelings....hence the Duke of Distraction. The heroine to his surprise can do some distractions of her own which leave both of them confused and unsure of their feelings. I also like the ending of the book and series and I am not confused in the least. I felt like I was in the middle of Ricky Nelson’s song “Garden Party” meeting all ond friends from the past. It gave me hope there is more to come after this series I so throughly enjoyed. Thank you Darcy for the 12 Dukes and their ladies I have come to love!
I fell in love with Felix. He was very forward for the times. And what he went through as a child and how it affected him just tore at my heart. This was a man that was always loyal and there for others. He didn’t want anyone to be there for him. He felt no one cared. Dude was amazing. He was kind, sweet and generous. I loved how he encouraged Sarah to pursue her dreams and supported them. He even helped her. Watching him fall in love with her and learn what love was was so heart warming and just swoony.
Sarah was a strong female. You can’t help but admire her gumption. She wanted to please her parents but not at her own happiness. Her and Felix were perfect for each other. They understood each other and were friends before their attraction came about.
The two didn’t begin thinking of becoming more than friends. They began as two friends from childhood where one was helping the other. Felix was helping Sarah with finding someone to love and her business. This got them to be in a moment where their attraction came through. And once that happened neither could stop falling for the other. I loved how accepting Sarah was of Felix’s feelings but also how as she learned about him she became patient and understood where his views came from. How as she learned about him and who he is, she was patient and kind but also finding a way to show Felix love and what love is. Finding a way for Felix to see he is loved and has love around him.
When tragedy hit Sarah’s world, Felix was there for her and her brother (his best friend). He helps Sarah explore herself and also get her to live again. To find her way out of the depression and see that she is alive. She can honor her parents but not lose herself is what Felix helped her see. They do have a tense time with her brother and this is what precipitates Felix learning about love. He is such a good guy and even when you wanted to smack sense into him you wanted to hold him and let him know he is loved and wanted.
A great tale of love and patience. Of acceptance and support. A romance that begins as friendship and becomes more. The drama is minimal and the intimacy is wonderful on many levels. The exploration of finding yourself and the one who supports and accepts you and also encourages you to fulfill your dreams is seen here. We get a fun sweet and wonderful romance between two lovable characters that belong together.
I have never smiled reading a book a much as I have with this one. These two just make you smile from the start with how made for each other they are. They are alike in many ways and see in each other what others don’t. That spark was was always there waiting and it ignited with one game at a party. These two can’t keep their hands off of each other.
I was so unprepared for what happened with her parents that I almost dropped my Kindle. The emotions and aftereffects really came off the pages. Felix was there to help no matter what. When Anthony burst through the door I actually spoke out loud with what I was thinking. The ending was perfect and everyone was finally happy.
Sarah is full of sass and will not be told what to do by anyone. I loved her right away with her plans to open the shop and how she talked with Felix about it. She saw that there was more to him and was determined to help him and give to him like he did everyone else.
Felix is happy when he is making others happy and doesn’t know how to let others do the same for him. He made me smile at every turn and broke my heart when everything about his past came out. But it didn’t ruin him like he thought.
I was worried about Anthony and that something would happen to him and hope he finds happiness.
