Robin Patchen is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Christian romantic suspense. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, the setting of her Nutfield Saga books, and then headed to Boston to earn a journalism degree. After college, working in marketing and public relations, she discovered how much she loathed the nine-to-five ball-and-chain. After relocating to the Southwest, she started writing her first novel while she homeschooled her three children. The novel was dreadful, but her passion for storytelling didn’t wane. Thankfully, as her children grew, so did her writing ability. Now that her kids are adults, she has more time to play with the lives of fictional heroes and heroines, wreaking havoc and working magic to give her characters happy endings. When she’s not writing, she’s editing or reading, proving most of her life revolves around the twenty-six letters of the alphabet. Beauty in Flight is a wonderfully, suspenseful story. I could feel what Harper was feeling, the creepiness of being watched, the feeling of hopelessness and the sadness of being sadness being estranged from her family. Harper is stuck working two jobs trying to make something of her life so she can return to her parents somewhat of a success. After doing two years in prison she is ashamed of herself and will never realize her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Once she makes the move to Maryland to take care of Red, her boyfriend's grandfather, she is sure things are looking up. That is until she finds out that Derrick is not the person she thought he was, and that Red and herself are in danger.

Harper Cloud is a fabulous main character. She is street savvy due to her rough background but not hardened by it. I love her natural kindness for the elderly and on the flip side the zero amount of tolerance she has for anything shady. She does not trust easily and it doesn't take much for her to shy away of personal involvement. Red is also wonderful. He is an old man with health issues, but he sees the real Harper and loves her like his own. The ending is a huge cliff hanger, but fortunately, book two is published and can be read right away. I definitely recommend this book and series to those who like a clean suspenseful story with Christian overtones. The author generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Wow! Cliff hangar alert!

Beauty in Flight was unique in that the suspense was in the margins. There was more of a feeling of tension and something ominous to come than actual action.

Main character Harper is a fabulous main character. She is street savvy due to her rough background but not hardened by it. I love her natural kindness for the elderly and on the flip side the zero amount of tolerance she has for anything shady.

The ending definitely leaves readers hanging. Thank goodness book two comes out in less than two months! There is one secondary character that I am hoping we'll see in book two or three.

My gratitude to the author for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.

I decided to pick up this book after a goodreads friend (Staci) recommended it and glad I did. This was the first book I've read by Robin Patchen and the first of a series. Thought the action was not there from the start, there was a constant expectation that something is going to happen, and I found myself guessing a few times about what might happen and totally being wrong.

The action at the end brought about an adrenaline rush, so that I took a while being able to settle and fall asleep.

Harper is a very lost soul with a sad, dark past, but who is caring towards the elderly who is playing small seeds in what I guess will be her path to salvation. She learned to make better decisions and to stand up for herself when needed.

Content warning: Due to Harper being still unsaved and due to her past, there is some worldly content, such as mentions of gambling, murder and sex before marriage.

This book ended on a cliffhanger note and I will definitely continue with the series.

I’m divided on my feelings about this book. I wanted to see a bit more of a story arc but instead it’s a build to a cliffhanger. I liked the parts about her overcoming her prison time; I strongly disliked the parts where her boyfriend and another man tried to force her to sleep with them. I was expecting more suspense but it didn’t really happen until the end. The characterization wasn’t super deep and there was very little description. I also disliked the several swears. However, that cliffhanger....I guess I’ll get to the next book to see what happens!

Beauty in Flight, which is book 1 of a 3-book series. It was in the Christian/Romance books section and out of my normal genre of Crime so I wasn't sure what to expect but, having read Chasing Amanda and Finding Amanda, which had been extremely good reads, I decided to give it a try. It wasn't strictly Christian or romantic in the sloppy sense of the word. Yes, it did mention religion and there was a small romantic element but it was a very touching and endearing story that had me readin
g into the early hours when I finished the book in one sitting and had to stop myself instantly reading the next book of this 3 part series. To elaboratel would simply spoil the read for others. Loved this book. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Trapped

When you make the mistake of getting in the wrong crowd, or with the wrong man, you might not be able to escape your past life. Sometimes you get trapped in the cycle. Your past will always catch up with you, eventually. But the beauty is that God has forgiven you and your past mistakes, your past life, all is forgiven.
Harper tried to escape her past, to start again. She wanted to be a nurse, to start a new life. But, the creepy feeling that someone is watching her refuses to fade away, even when she moves across the country and starts a new life. Is someone really after her, or is it just her imagination? Is she truly in danger, or is she just being overly sensitive? As she learns more about the man who enticed her to move she begins to wonder if she’ll ever be safe anywhere or if she’ll forever be looking over her shoulder, trapped in the sins of her past...

Harper doesn’t trust anyone. Will she ever find safety?
-‘Neither of them understood. When you were alone, when you didn’t trust anybody, then nobody could hurt you.’-

This story is so well-written! It gives tiny little hints, just enough to make the reader feel wary, anticipating where the storyline is leading, feeling a little edgy... It starts off subtle so that you don’t feel it’s like a horror story, only lots of suspense but then the action builds and it leaves you on the edge of your seat. The story unravels at a steady pace, unrushed, yet never boring, the tension builds and towards the end it explodes... and ends in a cliffhanger as this is only part one of a three-part series. I can’t wait to read the rest!

-‘Fear rose like flames, but she tamped it down. Nobody was out to get her. Carter wouldn’t dare come into her room uninvited, not with his wife under the same roof. Not after Harper had shut him down at dinner. She wouldn’t let fear keep her from sleep. So the door didn’t lock. So what? She was safe here. She’d spent far too much of her life living in fear. Besides, nobody could hurt her. She’d learned in prison how to defend herself—or at least how to make enough noise to alert the guards. She’d be fine.’-

I would not consider this a typical Christian novel although the author does weave in a faith thread through some of the lesser characters. The heroine makes no profession of faith, past or present. However, she seems to be seeking something more as she continues to put time and distance between her and her two years in the penitentiary. Unlike many, she has learned from her past mistakes and bad choices. Either way, she is working extra hard to have a new and better life. Although bad influences still abound, she is fortunate to have some good people in her life. Most of her bad choices were a result of her inability to recognize the true character of the men to whom she was attracted. Young adults can learn a huge lesson from Harper. Be extremely careful who you choose to trust and to spend time with. Friends do have an impact on our decisions: they can help us make wise decisions or bad ones. Another lesson is that it takes a lot of work to leave the past behind, so exert the effort to choose wisely from the start. The story is a cliffhanger, so I am looking forward to the next book to see what happens. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

It’s possibly cheating a little to write this review after having read the rest of the series, because honestly, this first instalment left me feeling a bit ambivalent. If I didn’t know what Robin Patchen was capable of, I may have been tempted not to continue. But I have read Robin Patchen before, and I know she can deliver on a great romantic suspense, so I pushed on with the series. And I’m ever so glad, because the rest of the series was everything I was expecting when I picked up the first book. So while wouldn’t necessarily recommend Beauty in Flight on its own merit, I do think the series as a whole is worth reading.

To briefly explain my thoughts on Beauty in Flight: it felt hollow, and in hindsight (having read the whole series) it’s because it’s essentially backstory for the following two books. There was a sense of anticipation in that I could feel things building to a point, but it lacked the tension it needed to really suck me in the way the subsequent two books in the series did, and a lot of it was ‘on the nose’, as though it was trying too hard to show things to the reader rather than just telling as story. And that’s something I wouldn’t have thought I would be saying about Robin Patchen’s writing.

That said, the book does deliver quite a climax, it’s a relatively quick read, and it sets up the rest of the series—which, as I’ve already said, was a great read.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Good very good

I enjoyed the story. Harper grew on me as the story pressed. Quite honestly I would love to kick Derrick in the shins. He plays the jerk well. Red is the best.

Look forward to reading book 2

I was very quickly sucked into this book and couldn't put it down until I was finished. I read the Kindle version, but according to Goodreads the paperback has 201 pages. So it's a shorter book and one I would consider easy to devour in one sitting.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I would have liked to see a little more depth added to both Harper's background story as well as some of the emotions and temptations she was faced with. I would have liked to see more about what her life was like both before and after prison in terms of her attitude towards sin and when she started to hunger to know more about God. Did those feelings start before prison or when the Christian counselors started to talk to her? Even if there wasn't a distinct moment, I would have liked to read a bit more into her mindset as it changed from her past.

There was one quote that I really found interesting. Derrick was trying to manipulate Harper to get what he wanted and she was reminded of something she'd been told while in prison:

"She flashed back to those sweet counselors who'd visited the prison. They'd taught her that her biggest addiction wasn't substances, but people."

Although the story doesn't go into very much detail about her past, It is mentioned that partying and drugs was a part of it. Even though her time with the counselors didn't lead to Harper putting her complete faith in God, they were at least able to plant seeds that started to sprout and grow in her heart after she left. There were also other Christians she encountered on her path who could help lead her in the right direction as well. The words that were shared with her placed convictions in her heart and helped her recognize when she was being manipulated. I admire how the author fleshed out the changes in her heart. There wasn't and "ah-HAH!" moment where it all clicked, but she also wasn't fully opposed to God. Instead, she was "curious" and "hungry" to know more. She noticed that she felt changes in her attitude but she wasn't quite sure where they came from. As a believer I see it as God softening and tugging at her heart. I could also see it as an interesting concept to tug at the hearts of unbelievers as well.

Beauty in Flight is the first in a new series. I have the next two books and plan on reading them next. I'm sincerely curious to know where the author goes with this series. This one ends with a cliffhanger strong enough to demand you pick up the next book immediately. I'll be sharing my thoughts on the next one soon!

Review: I felt that the book did really good with character development and the writing was well done. The book is also really well paced and it’s not a very stress-inducing suspense novel, so if you want to read something suspenseful but can’t bring yourself to do so with most novels this would probably be a good one for you.

However, I felt that the book didn’t really go anywhere. There wasn’t much of a story here and the climax is at the end of the book. It feels like the book is mostly just background and story setting up, it’s really off-putting for a first book.

Verdict: If you can deal with story setting this book would be good for you.

Harper Cloud is a young lady that has made some poor choices, both in life and in love, and ultimately paid a stiff price - a prison sentence. Now she's out and attempting to remake her life. But with a criminal conviction hanging over her head her professional options are limited and she's put a wall of distrust around her heart.
Robin Patchen's Beauty in Flight is an old wooden roller coaster ride of a tale. That thrill-awaiting drag upwards, as we meet the characters in the story - Harper, a beautiful woman stained by a criminal conviction, longing for a place to belong; Derrick, Harper's boyfriend (or is he?), a driven young man that has a serious addiction that has him in some deep trouble; Red, Derrick's grandfather and Harper's employer, a gruff, intelligent, sad, gentle soul who has a strong faith and...is worth $$millions. Then Robin drops us over the top and we have the WHOOSH as the speed of the story cranks up and we hit the curves and turns then...WHAM!!! Right in the middle of one of those exhilarating, can't-catch-your-breath turns, someone throws the emergency brake. And we have to wait until the second book to continue the ride.

The first book in Robin Patchen’s Beauty in Flight series (with the same title) is a quick read due to its short length and could actually be considered a novella. The book introduces Harper Cloud, a young woman who has attempted to rebuild her life after a stint in prison. Loving her work with the elderly, she tries to ignore the feelings that she is being watched but a close call convinces her to accept a job taking care of her new boyfriend’s grandfather in Maryland. Is a second chance really possible for Harper or will her past catch up with her?

Overall I thought Beauty in Flight was a good read with enough suspense to keep it interesting. The characters were realistic and relatable. The author managed to drop a few clues along the way which left me with some doubts about one particular character. Some readers have complained that there was not enough Christian content but as this is a series, I anticipate that readers will see that particular topic expand in later installments.

I was able to read the entire series in order during a short span of time so the fact that I was left hanging at the end of this installment was not as frustrating as it might have been if I was forced to wait on the next book in the series. My advice would be to read all three books one after the other if possible. In my opinion, the three books could easily have been published as one.

I’ve seen and heard Robin Patchen’s name for a few years now, but this is the first book written by her I’ve read. Let me tell you, it won’t be my last (and not just because of the cliffhanger ending).
As readers follow Harper Cloud from Las Vegas to Maryland, Patchen draws us into the comfort Harper finds as a private nurse while slowly drawing us into the mystery of exactly what is going on with Derek.

Beauty in Flight is an excellent introduction to Harper as we get a sense of her guilt and remorse for her past decisions, her determination to move forward and live a better life than she was before, and her compassion in helping others.

The slow build of suspense kept me involved in this story, and I was not ready for it to end, which makes the fact there are two more books starring Harper Cloud the best kind of news.

Wow. What a fascinating suspense novel! This is the first book I’ve read by Robin Patchen and I’ll definitely be reading more books by this author in the near future. This book is book 1 in the Beauty in Flight series and the series should be read in order. This book ends in such a cliffhanger that I’m itching to start reading the second book even as I’m writing this review.
The plot is easy to follow and the main character Harper is endearing though flawed in so many ways. The major theme of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness shines brightly in Harper’s life as she tries her best to create a new life and beginning for herself after prison time and doing menial jobs just to get by. But she gets sucked into the world of gambling and money-hungry people purely by association and suddenly she’s being chased and injured.
If you enjoy a well-written, high-tension suspense novel, you will love this book. I received a copy of the book via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Beauty in Flight by Robin Patchen is an interesting glance into a life of a woman who wants to escape the stereotype of her past. While the book is categorized as a mystery / suspense novel, I had a hard time with that because there really isn't any suspense in the current novel. It might show up in the next two, but it wasn't in this one. The heroine, Harper Cloud, felt someone was following her a couple of times, and she did almost mugged at the beginning, but really nothing came of it. I see the novel as a contemporary women's fiction. The character is wonderfully written with a realistic distrust of circumstances in her life. I empathized with her, and I shook my head at her for some of her actions, but overall, she was a strong woman determined to shake her past. I believe fans of Karen Kingsbury and Catherine West might enjoy this novel.

"All she knew was that she didn't know anything."

Harper Cloud's post-prison life is full of new perspective. It was painful to learn that beauty on the outside often attracts the wrong kind of friends, in particular, the wrong kind of men. Her hopes and dreams have become simple again, except for Derrick Burns' insistence that their long distance relationship become a short distance one, with no strings attached. When has that every worked for Harper?

Glad to leave Las Vegas behind and the eerie feeling that she is being stalked, Harper travels to Maryland to become a caregiver for Derrick's aging grandfather. But it's not going to be the last trip that Harper takes; trouble knows no distance.

In some ways, the story seemed over-simplified, but it catches up in the end! A real cliff-hanger!

Harper Cloud is a convicted felon. She wanted to be an RN, but now that she is a felon, that is out of the question. Harper is dating Derrick from Maryland and she lives in Las Vegas. Harper is working in a nursing home and Derrick offers her a job taking care of his grandfather, Red. Derrick is a gambling addict and owes a lot of money to sharks. Harper gets attacked in a supermarket parking lot. She goes back and finds two dead bodies and Red standing over them. She takes Red and flees. This is a page turner and you have to read the sequel to find out the conclusion.

This story starts a bit slow, but the tension and suspense is held throughout. Danger seems to be hiding just around the corner as I read through this one.

I loved most of the characters in this book. Except maybe Derrick, he felt a bit flat and shallow to be, or maybe that was just me.

It has a bit of tough things going on, but also has plenty of positive points as well.

Overall, I loved this suspense novel. Though be warned it does end on a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed reading this book. It kept me turning pages so I could find out what happened next. The 2 stars rating is because of my frustration with it ending as a total cliff-hanger. Nothing was resolved. I like book series, but I prefer closure in each book with a continuation of the characters and setting and maybe one part of the storyline in subsequent books. This book left everything hanging. I have to read books two and three to get any closure to the storyline. Frustrating

I discovered Robin Patchen a little over a year ago as a "new to me" voice in Christian romantic suspense. In short order, I pretty much devoured her Hidden Truth series. When I learned she was doing a new series, I was super excited! This is the first book in a trilogy (don't worry, the other 2 books are just a couple of months out) and I'm now anxiously awaiting book 2.

This one started a bit slow for my liking, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Harper Cloud is attempting to get her life back on track and is going to school for nursing, while working in a nursing home, feeding and cleaning up the elderly in her care. Due to her record, she doesn't believe she will be able to get a real nursing job, but just wants to make her estranged family proud of her. She constantly feels like she's being watched and when she's nearly attacked on her way home from work one night, she decides to take her boyfriend up on the offer to move across the country to care of his elderly grandfather. (I absolutely adore Red (the grandfather) and his take on life and how he relates to Harper. ) In spite of the cross country move, the feeling of being watched does not diminish and Harper is continually reminding herself that she is safe. I think that this feeling of being watched and knowing this is a suspense, fed into the feeling of it being slow for me. It took a good bit before the actual action happened. If you're like me, though, don't give up just because it starts slow because once it picks up, it definitely picks up! I can't wait for the next installment to see what happens next!

This book does end in a cliffhanger (though it is a good breaking point - feels like the episode of an intense tv show that ends with "to be continued....." at the season finale), but the author has indicated that we won't have to wait very long for books 2 and 3. And.... book 2 will take us to Nutfield, the location for the Hidden Truth books. I'm hopeful we'll run into some old friends there! This one was a pretty quick read as well with right around 200 pages.

Special thanks to the author for an advanced e-copy of this book. I was not under any obligation to write a review and the thoughts and opinions contained herein are my own.

Interesting beginning, where will it all lead? Fear can cause people to do foolish things and Harper Cloud is one scared woman. You’d be scared too if you walked into the house and found two dead bodies on the floor with bullet holes in their head. But I digress, lets go back to the beginning.

Someone is out to get Harper but who? She already spent two years in prison by trusting the wrong people. Now she’s starting a new life… well as new a life as a felon can. For years she trusted the wrong people and it cost her. Now she’s running again. This time she doesn’t have a clue who wants her dead. Was it because of her life in Vegas where her trouble began? The trouble that caused her a prison stint? If so, why? Or does it have something to do with her new life? Now she’s across the country in Maryland. How would men from her her past know anything about her now and what would they want from her? Or maybe the old and new are connected. After all, she was being stalked in Vegas and was saved from being kidnapped from a past ‘acquaintance’ who literally popped up out of the blue to save her.

Her new job is being a home health worker with an elderly man named Red. Derrick, a wanna-be boyfriend persuaded Harper to move to Maryland to care for his grandfather. But things were not as they seemed to be. Derrick has his own problems… BIG problems. He needs money to pay off a gambling debt. Things go from bad to worse, Granddad Red’s Gatorade has been tampered with. Is someone trying to poison granddad? How bad do they want that money owed? Is it Derrick, his grandson, or the loansharks? Or maybe it’s someone from Harper’s Vegas past. All we know is Harper goes to the store for new Gatorade and is grabbed, beaten and knifed in the grocery store parking lot. She’s left with a message to “Tell him we stopped by”.

Hmmmm, tell who???? Not trusting the police she runs home, finds granddad all confused and sees two dead men on the floor… one , a dirty cop who moonlights for the loanshark and the other was the person who knifed and beat her in the parking lot. It’s time to run, get granddad to safety and somehow, someway find who is out to get her and who would poison granddad? Book two certainly will be interesting.
