The book, written by one of the premier sports agents in the country, is exceptionally well written. Insightful, with a good mix of stories and straight talk, any leader, manager or coach will find the book a good read. The overlay of sports makes it a bit different and interesting than many other books of its type, but it isn't so heavy that a non-sports enthusiast would find it irrelevant or difficult. The Quick Play Guide at the end of the book is a great summarizing touch, and recaps the relevant lessons learned from each chapter. All in all, a good read and a valuable addition to your leadership library.

This is what I liked best about this book and what I've taken away as most beneficial to me.
The book Game-Time Decision Making: High-Scoring Business Strategies from the Biggest Names in Sports by David Meltzer discusses how, for athletes, having positive mantras can help affirm their confidence in their abilities, preparing their mind to work in unison with their body. One of the best examples of this is a set of mantras called “The Athlete’s Litany.” This set of phrases is meant to be repeated every day, until they are a subconscious belief and eventually an unconscious competency. These can be easily adapted and incorporated into the routine of any leader, imbuing confidence in the approach he or she is taking to solving a problem. Creating a Leader’s Litany of your own can help give you more resolve in your actions, leading to better performance and a mindset capable of handling any challenging decision that may come your way.

I like how Meltzer talks about “Zone Coverage” or the 3 different zones: Comfort, Anxiety, and Learning zones.

He says, “If you’re thankful, forgiving, accountable, and communicating effectively with what inspires you, then you have a much better chance to continue the game and win.” Persevering through lows, as well as maintaining composure through highs, comes from making today a focal point. To get what you want, you must be consistent. Consistency is even more important than persistence because consistency breeds persistence - meaning, if you get in the habit of doing a particular thing every single day, quitting that habit is difficult.

"You can be born with the greatest talents and gifts, but if you’re not persistent and consistent in the use of those skills, you cannot achieve your fullest potential." Meltzer promotes to detach happiness from achievement. Attaching your goals to happiness is what leads to unhappiness. I totally agree!

We first establish a connection by emotionally connecting to one person or a group. We connect emotionally when we talk about the things that are important to us. The second way to communicate is to connect to that which inspires you, whatever that may be. Inspiration is the fuel for your action. It’s the fuel that goes through you to others. Meltzer advocates we share true stories, whether personal or observed, about former co-workers or employees who showed perseverance, or highlight current team members who display that attitude. As Lakers legend Jerry West said, “You can’t get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good.” To keep your team aligned with organizational goals, give them positive reinforcement, tools, or strategies that are rooted in your core values.

a very useful and practical book, I love how the book is structured with pre-game analysis, post-game wrap up and quick play guide, which are essentially chapter intro, chapter summary and book summary. However, I have a difficult time understanding what “access” really means, I wish the book has provided more examples to explain that.

Clear and to the point.
David's values and points of view resontate so well with me, which is probably why I loved this book so much!
I could understand that it would not stick with others as well.
Overall just a good book and David is a guy to follow!
