Starting to wonder if New Mutants just isn't for me. Another boring volume mixed with future versions of characters dealing with past. Nothing really was that interesting, not offensively bad, just boring as hell.
So, some of these stories are a little wacky. To the point where you might exclaim “what the hell is happening here?!” It’s a lot of movement, and it has to do with oddball timestream/reality stuff.
It worked, but in all honesty, the plot isn’t what makes this collection. It’s the characters.
This book has heart. Each character goes on a meaningful journey. They struggle, come to terms with themselves, and learn to trust their team mates. There’s a very pleasant and natural feelgood quality to this. It’s not corny, it’s just... nice.
The art can feel a but jumbled at times, but it’s bold and ambitious. I liked it.
As an added bonus, the final issue is one of those “all the characters at a party” issues. I love those. It’s aways fun with the asskicking is broken up with some fun.
I love the New Mutants! I also love Abnett & Lanning's run on cosmic Marvel, so this was real treat. Trippy existential threats interspersed with clever quips and genuine heart.
My only complaint, and it's not really a complaint, is how Doug Ramsay (AKA Cypher) is handled. Personally, I love Doug. I even liked this iteration of Doug, a testament to DnA's writing. It just found it kind of sad to see him portrayed as this kind of pathetic, hapless loser. Then again, when you're dealing with a character who is perhaps most memorable for dying, and this being the series that is effectively dealing with his resurrection after being dead for nearly 2 decades, I suppose it's to be suspected that the character has to work through that. It was good, and it was handled well. I don't know, I guess I'm just protective of him. I just wish him...happiness? lol
Also, big props for jettisoning the Dani/Sam relationship for Dani/Nate. Dani and Sam just felt gross and incestuous.
