Clint tries (and fails) to effectively mentor Kate, current leader of the West Coast Avengers, which includes super powerful America, who's dating the sister of Fuse! Add Gwenpool, Quentin Quire, Noh Varr and a little land shark; then throw in a reality TV show and lots of talking head interviews; not brilliant, but nice and quirky and different; and Marvel just gives it ten issues before cancelling it! Imagine how many great books would have never existed if they were only given their first ten issues to get the sales figures in? A Three Star, 6 out of 12 improvement on the first volume - a book with a lot of potential that will never be reached.

"This sucks. Also, I have a headache. Does anyone else have a headache?" - Quentin 'Kid Omega' Quire

"Well, you're talking . . . so . . . yes." - Gwendolyn 'Gwenpool' Poole

While West Coast Avengers, Vol. 1: Best Coast was no classic, I recall that it admittedly had its charms - as Kate 'Hawkeye' Bishop will always be a winning heroine - and often worked as a pretty good lightweight action-comedy with its newly-assembled squad of young superheroes. Unfortunately, their follow-up adventure Vol. 2: City of Evils seemed to be equipped with an engine running on the proverbial fumes. While it occasionally featured a humorous zinger or scene, this volume felt sort of tired and uninspired by the end. The Quentin Quire character was just flat-out annoying this time, and some of the intended barbs - Scientology chapters / followers, the Sharknado movie series, etc. - completely miss the mark and/or play it too safe. (Then again, I wouldn't want to be targeted by a lawsuit, either.) And in a sentence that I'm positive that you won't read anywhere else today, action girl Gwenpool and her newly-adopted pet landshark 'Jeff' (?!) were the MVPs of the storyline.

Thompson sort of ties up some of the loose ends from her previous Hawkeye series as we finally get some rushed answers about Kate's mom, although both of her parents' stories (and Madame Masque's) are unresolved. There's not a whole lot of cohesion between the story lines and that may be part of why I think this series was just OK.

I’m heartbroken that this lighthearted team series, assembled almost completely of superheroes with a "second chance" after solo cancellations, has also been cancelled. Even though this volume fell into the same pitfalls as Thompson’s other work, she still brought together a diverse team that deserved more than just two volumes.

The ragtag team feels cohesive, even though these characters were never intended to be on a single team. There’s plenty of witty banter with classic Clint and Kate moments (who serve as the team's anchors), but Gwenpool and snarky mutant Kid Omega ultimately stole the show. Thompson's sharp dialogue and pacing are her strengths, and she excels here with these characters.

However, there's very little emotional development underneath the action and one-liners, even though many emotional things happen: major elements of Kate’s personal and romantic life return, new romantic couples form, and Gwenpool adopts a baby land shark.

Very mild spoilers, because it's taken five volumes of setup (across Kate's solo series and WCA) for Kate and her mother to reunite. But weirdly, it falls flat for such an emotionally charged, climactic moment. The explanation of her mother’s disappearance and return is confusing and rushed, though perhaps Thompson saw the writing on the wall and had no choice.

Another happy reunion: Kate and her bags of frozen peas.

There's a similar flatness to Kate's reaction towards her former flame, Noh-Varr, who you may remember all the way back from Young Avengers. Kate doth protest too much that she's definitely over it (see above image), but why bring up unresolved feelings and then avoid resolution? Even the preview says Kate's relationship with current bf Fuse is "shaky" - but show me one moment in the book that shows them arguing because I couldn't find it!

Something was missing, and that may have been a meaningful talk between Kate and (an uncomfortable but caring) Clint, whose relationship is and should be the book's core.

I'm focusing on Kate's emotional development because it was the focus (presumably) of the book, and a lack of it had a ripple effect on the team, especially with the number of personal relationships between them. The group dynamic feels unchanged by the end of the book, which is strange, considering everything they’ve gone through.

The emotional beats are off, and it's also reflected in the art. Di Nicuolo’s opening issues were well drawn, kinetic, and expressive, but when Lim and Moy R respectively take over, things become more cartoony and not in a good way. At least Farrell’s colors help maintain some consistency.

And then the plot suddenly descends into weird fantasy cult territory. This ridiculousness is also an unfortunate trope of Thompson’s, and the silliness feels more shallow without the aforementioned character growth.

Marvel’s decision effectively abandons these characters who had a second chance on this title, which brought something different to the shelves. There's something special about a B-team title, but I have a hunch the Hawkeyes and Gwenpool weren't big enough names to draw the all-important sales numbers. (Frankly, Lucky the Pizza Dog should be enough for anyone, but I digress.)

West Coast Avengers deserved more volumes than it received, and could have become really special with more time and trust, especially under Thompson, despite her missteps here. Once again, Marvel seems to have little faith in diverse titles and casts (who aren’t the main Avengers) nor much desire to market them.

The West Coast Avengers continue to bounce off each other wonderfully here, creating one of the more amusing squads found in Marvel Comics. However, whilst the characters can be praised almost to the heavens and back, the same cannot be said about the plot which is meh at best. None of the villains feel threatening, coming off more like a random pick 'n' mix combo that doesn't mesh well because you hurriedly put it together without much thought. Even worse than the flat villains is the ending climax which really goes off the rails with its narrative direction. This is very much a came for the characters, stayed for the characters deal.

This is the second volume of a series that Marvel gave up on way too soon. It ties up some of the loose ends from Thompson's Hawkeye (another book that Marvel gave up on way too soon) and is a fine and amusing assemblage (!) of nicely quirky characters. It's extremely well-written, with several really clever twists, and the art is quite consistently good, despite being from three different artists. My favorite was the middle section from Gang Hyuk Lim. Gwen isn't annoying, Kate rules, and Pizza Dog has a fine new friend named Fred. Never question the inclusion of landsharks. Excelsior!

I seem to have a knack for falling for Avengers runs that are way underappreciated. I first found Kate Bishop in Young Avengers. A book that really doesn't get the credit it deserves. I blame the name, sounds like it's for babies when they actually mean 18-22 year olds.

I adore Kate Bishop. I also loved her solo run, that also got ended too soon. Kate Bishop Hawkeye is where I really solidified by adoration of author Kelly Thompson. She has a real talent for dialogue and for making each character shine with their own personality. She's also just simply more in touch with today's audiences. She's younger and knows what those of us who haven't been around since the silver age are looking for today.

So I followed both Kate Bishop and Kelly Thompson over here to West Coast Avengers knowing full well it was ended prematurely. I do not regret this decision. But it does fill me with longing. Everything I love gets taken away so soon!

As with Young Avengers and Kate Bishop Hawkeye, Bishop is the snarky, thirsty, always in just over her head, leader of a group of fresh and inexperienced heroes.

They are a diverse group featuring various races and sexual orientations. I love the ongoing joke of Bishop always being the token straight person in her groups. Especially since she never even seems to realize it.

Through two volumes The West Coast Avengers battle a line up of impressive bad guys featuring Madam Masque. She's one of my favorite underused Marvel Villains. She's so creepy and mysterious and I always get excited seeing her.

We are also graced by the presence of America Chavez, who is way too cool and powerful for this group but she finds a new girlfriend here so she's probably sticking around.

As a bonus we are introduced to Fuse and Alloy, a brother sister team descended from Wakanda. They're both infused with the power of Vibranium and they're honestly both kinda hot. So win win. Did I mention that author Thompson always seems to make her comics sexy? In totally non degrading ways! Seriously, check out Mr. and Mrs X.

The best part of West Coast Avengers is that it is simply fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It enjoys the action without getting bogged down on trying to be edgy or deep. It just takes you on a roller-coaster ride.

I fully enjoyed the ride and will continue to seek out more from both Kate Bishop and Kelly Thompson. I've yet to regret it from either of these starring ladies.

This was good. This volume takes the energy and fun from volume 1 and kicks it up a notch. Now-Var let’s the team know about this cult that he believes are skrulls . The team comes up with a plan to infiltrate. Of course the plan goes belly up as they discover they are not Skrulls but something else entirely. Now a rescue mission is in order. Love the silly, not taking ourselves too seriously, approach to this series . I had a blast reading it. Shame this didn’t continue.

This actually wrapped up fairly decent for being cut off so soon. I wish we could have gotten at least one more volume out of this title, but I'm hoping to see the team somewhere else soon. Oh, and I'm completely here for Noh and Johnny. Do ship! 5/5 stars.

Another series cut criminally short, the West Coast Avengers' adventures end in this second volume as Kelly Thompson does her best to resolve all the plotlines she set into motion while also bringing some closure to outstanding character relationships by reintroducing Marvel Boy to Kate Bishop's life. Fuse and his sister get some much-needed focus, while Gwenpool and Quentin Quire become your favourite ship without even meaning to.

Meanwhile, Kate's mother and Madam Masque make their return in an absolutely absurd vampire storyline that will have you laughing out loud. This book is so clever, so funny, and so full of heart that it's really a crime to lose it at this stage. I should be used to Marvel doing this to me, and yet here I am.

Daniele Di Nicolo takes some issues here, before Gang Hyuk Lim and Moy R. finish off the series. None of them are as impressive as Stefano Caselli was on the previous volume, but they do okay. It's always a shame when Marvel grab their top talent away, because it feels like they're giving up on the book - not to discount the artists here, but they're definitely in a different vein to Caselli, and it's easy to feel shortchanged.

RIP (again) West Coast Avengers. Gone, but never forgotten.

Sadly, the end of the new West Coast Avengers, as Marvel continues to prove unable to put out comics for longer than a year or two (or 10 months in this case).

The first story is typical for the WCA to date. They fight a whole Legion of foes, but the story is saved by great character pieces, with Gwen and Quire being particular stand-outs.

Fortunately, the second story, of the battle with the Cult of the Shifting Sun, is a step up. To start with, we get Marvel Boy back, making WCA into almost a Young Avengers (v2) reunion. Then we get fascinating background for Fuse and "Alloy", two characters that I expect we'll never see again, and the story of Kate's mom (finally!).

It's all a little rushed, and I'd still like to know more, but it's good to get at least some closure.

This title continues to be a pleasing blend of action, comedy, and young adult relationship drama. Kelly Thompson writes it just light enough to be entertaining, but not to the point where it's too goofy to be taken seriously.

Significant figures from Kate’s past show up, which should thrill readers of Thompson’s Hawkeye series. Me, I didn't even know that there was such a series until I saw the ad page inside the back cover of this volume. Might have to see about tracking those down …

Still digging this series. Yes, it's lightweight, but it's consistently entertaining. And, so far, there have been no continuity games where half the story appears in a different title or similar shenanigans. Recommended!

Just finished reading this run for the second time and it was even better than I remembered. Stories, characters, dialogue, artwork, all great and funny and unique.

My fondest wish with Kate Bishop joining the MCU in the Hawkeye tv series (first two episodes were great, btw) is that this comic will pick up right where it left off - with Kelly Thompson writing and a fascinating new West Coast Avengers team in place, from the dragon to the smol pet land shark.

This was a light-hearted, enjoyable read, but unfortunately it ends all too abruptly, having been canceled with issue # 10 due to low readership. The first three issues of this volume deal with the team being captured by Madam Masque and put through a sadistic theme park designed to break their spirits, and the second half of the book sees the return of Marvel Boy, who recruits the team to investigate a cult he believes are being run by Skrulls.

The stories are fun, the team interactions are always amusing, but the stories do feel a bit rushed in their brevity, and the entire volume lacks proper closure, which I really can't fault Thompson for. She ends on a pretty funny gag that's a callback to a gag in a previous issue, and honestly, it's probably the best way to close out a book like this. Still, the story with Kate's mom suffers the most from the abrupt cancelation of the book, and I don't know if that thread has been picked up in any other book as of yet.

There are three artists who penciled the issues in this volume: Daniele Di Nicuolo, Gang Hyuk Lim, and Moy R. Thankfully, all three of them have pretty consistent, clean styles that make the book flow pretty smoothly from artist to artist. I enjoyed them all and would like to see more from each of them.

It's a real shame that this book didn't find its readership because it was a fun team, and I think Thompson likely had some interesting stories cooked up. Though I think the team make-up may have been a little too quirky and misfit-oriented, which may have been the very thing that led to the book's unfortunate demise.

This was really entertaining. The plot was more focused without any unrelated comics included. There is just the one story and the focus is on that story and the characters in the story. It is a little silly, but the team kicks but and has a plan and a backup. There is a bit of actual character development even as I no longer wish Kid Omega would die. Gwen is good for him.

I just don't get all the bad reviews, it is like those reviewers did not even read the same comic. I mean Jeff the Landshark what has the shark ever done to you? 4.5 stars.

Why did they have to go and cancel this book?? It found a near-perfect balance of quirkiness, humor, and serious and every issue was so fun to read. I really hope that we get to see Thompson get another shot with these characters somewhere down the road. She did so much great ground work and for a series that got cut sort, ended it really well. I wish Marvel would just give these types of books more of a chance! 4.5 out of 5.

Well that was just an absolute pleasure to read, twice in a year. All the silliness, friction-filled relationships (yes, that too) and smart-sounding misfits indeed.

Why can’t I get this Kelly Thompson forever? Why she gotta go and get good at her serious stories and take on the mountain that is Carol Danvers? Having just come from that book, back to here, I hope I don’t miss this layer of Thompson for long.

Man, this run was ended way too soon.

While I enjoyed the first volume, I positively devoured the last couple of issues. It felt like this iteration of the West Coast Avengers had finally found its stride - along with a distinct feeling of comfort and camaraderie among all of the members. We learned just where that vibranium jewelry came from and how it came to be in Fuse's possession, along with just how much Ramone cares about dear America. We learned more about Kate's mother, that forever thorny issue that has never quite been fully resolved. We also learned more about Noh-Varr than perhaps any of us ever wanted to know, but moving on...

This WCA team is just utterly fantastic. I fell in love with Quentin Quire and Gwenpool, something I never thought I'd be able to say. I even enjoyed Jeff the Landshark. I liked seeing them work together and grow, and I loved seeing Kate coming into her own while Clint took a backseat to let this Hawkeye shine. Clint never felt sidelined or forgotten. On the contrary, he felt like he was truly cheering Kate on and enjoying watching her grow. It was rough and tumble and just so much fun.

I hope someday Kelly Thompson returns to this team, or at least writes more Kate Bishop. Kate is deserving of a writer who truly understands her and I firmly believe that Thompson is that writer. I miss Kate. I miss this run that never really got a chance. I understand now why everyone was so upset it was cancelled and now I have no choice but to join their ranks.

But hey, while we had it wasn't it great?

If you liked the first volume, this feels pretty similar. It ends a bit suddenly and there were some dangling threads, but it was still fun. This book is notable for the introduction of Jeff the Land Shark, so there's that.
I recognized Daniele Di Nicuolo's artwork from Seven Secrets Vol. 1 and enjoyed it in both books, although it does look a bit different from the previous volume.

This series continues to be the super fun misadventures of our misfit superhero team. Thompson delivers some engaging writing, and the art is consistently enjoyable. The story gains some added complexity here, but it all holds together quite well. Plus, we get Jeff the landshark which is worth celebrating entirely on its own.

The banter, the adventure--this is a title that embraces its own oddness and uses the quirk to its own advantage. It's a pity that it got cancelled, but the abrupt ending fits in its own amusing way. I hope to see these characters and storylines turn up again in some way.

Whoever cancelled this series needs to get booted.

It's funny, the character dynamics are great, Fuse isn't as bland as he was in the first vol, and they actually managed to write Gwenpool well, not great, but well enough that she keeps her charm. I've heard others talk against it, but I actually rather like the sitcom style. Anything that they did well, they did great. Anything that they didn't do well could be improved upon in future issues, if there were any. Unfortunately it was cancelled and now I'll never know if they actually could improve it.

Also Jeff is the single best thing in the Marvel universe and I will fight anyone who disagrees

It would be really sad if I was just breezing through comics to make up the deficit in my reading challenge so it’s good I’m not doing that.

Would have loved for Thompson’s Kate Bishop solo series to have gone on longer and found a more distinct voice, like Fraction’s Hawkeye got the space to do, but WCA was a pleasant enough continuation. Bit more on the trad capeshit side than the better Hawkeye books which know those characters’ charm lies in their mundane adventures, but after all it’s not a Hawkeye book, it’s a team book. The team in question is light, goofy fun, and as long as you’re not expecting more than that you could do a lot worse.

Your alien ex boyfriend from a parallel universe is back. He has the answer to all your weird run ins as of late. SKRULLS! (seriously?!)

Another filler book that the writer probably knew was going to get cancelled.

Quire is still waiting for find out Gwenpool's superpower.
America gets a girlfriend.
Fuse sets himself up for a three way with Marvel Boy and Kate.

Lucky the pizza dog cameos.

Baddies? Madame Masque still hates Team Hawkeye and brought some west coast friends to help make things painful for the heroes.

Read it if it's cheap.

Bonus? Baby land shark!

Gwenpool is still the best, and I love her awareness of the reboot. Additionally I enjoyed the adoption of a relationship to ensure that she remains crucial in her supporting role. Also, Jeff the Landshark forever!

Disappointing that they didn’t even get a proper conclusion, let alone any payoff of the prodigious number of hooks that were spread throughout.
