USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Herron fell in love with books at the ripe age of eight when she read her first Trixie Belden mystery. But she didn’t think real people grew up to be writers, so she became a teacher instead. Now she writes so she doesn’t have to get a real job. With over ninety books to her credit, she’s penned romantic suspense, romantic comedy and YA novels, but she especially likes writing dark romantic suspense and crime fiction set in small southern towns. So I wonder is this simply a prequel to DLD, or does it tie into things that happened in book two as well? I may need to go back and read a few parts of book two again, so I’m caught up for book four. All in all a good prequel that gets you excited for the fourth book and sets up the back story. Maybe introduces us to some of the key players in a new way. Won’t know for sure until I read book four!
Short and sweet prequel giving you a taste for more.
This book is a short prequel to give you some backstory on the following book, it also picks up from the epilogue from the previous book Good Little Girls. It follows the Darling Sisters, although you don’t ever meet them. The detective on the case was the first to respond and investigate the case, however all leads go cold (hence the next book in the sequel Dead Little Darlings) which will hopefully give us all some light and finish off the story arch nicely. It’s a lovely short piece to read if you enjoy the series.
A short prequel novel that takes place when 3 young sisters go missing. The investigation goes cold but by the end we are introduced to a killer who I am sure is going to play a prominent role in the follow up book Dead Little Darlings.
I was unaware that this was not a full book in the series when I purchased it. Having read books 1 & 2, I thought this would be the next in the series and it is...sort of. When the story ended abruptly, I went back to see if the book did not successfully download, or if I had somehow skipped over most of the book, and it was then I found out that this is a prequel to the next in the series although it reads as sample chapters and not a novella and just drops you out of the story. So because it leaves you hanging and feels really incomplete it is only getting the three stars. Hopefully it ties in to the series somehow with the next book as there is no tie in to previous books with this sliver of a book. Seriously, finished reading in less than 15 minutes. So I would suggest having this book and the next purchased so that you can go right to the next scenes and not have to wait to find out what on Earth is going on.
As a long-time fan of Rita Herron’s writing and of The Keeper’s series, it was a disappointment to pick this book up. Unfortunately, the Novella just failed to hit the mark. There was no obvious correlation between it and the previous books in this series and the absent plot summary left the writing to feel like a prologue rather than an independent piece of writing. One can assume that this was an overture to prepare the readers for next book in the series, however, it may have confused them even more. It felt rushed and lacked any real character development. Sorry but skip this one for the next book coming mid-February 2019.
This book was interesting and covered the main character detective William Flagler’s struggles with his career and his family life. After a tragedy almost took his life, he chose to give up his career for his family. The story finishes with an introduction to the evil monster that is holding three young girls. These girls were the last case Will worked on. I think he is not going to be able to stay in retirement!
I brought this as I was expecting it to be a follow on from the first 2 keepers books. It may have been set in the same place but it did not even mention the previous characters. This just seems to be prelude for another story. I will buy the 4th part an hope it does not disappoint. I have read many Rita Herron books an to be fair this is the only one that has really been a disappointment.
Disappointing. It wasn't a novel, just an intro to book 4. Nothing was wrapped up. There was quite a bit of lag time between the sections ("2 weeks later" "3 weeks later"). It makes me wonder if any of the books in this series is a complete novel or if this is one novel broken into pieces. Personally I hate cliffhangers.
I was very disappointed in this book. When I bought it I wasn't aware that it's only a few chapters. It should have been added at the beginning of the next book in the series. Definitely not worth paying for. And I'm betting that what's in this book will be covered over & over again in the next book in the series. I feel cheated by Amazon and the author.
This little story has me hooked. What comes next? Who is this bad guy? Will anyone ever find these 3 girls? Who has them? Did they run away? We're they abused at home? Just exactly the kind of suspense Rita does so well! Can't wait to read the next book! Highly recommended.
This book seemed totally unrelated to the prior books in the series. The concept was interesting and the suspense was good. But it ended with a thud. No answers. No resolutions. It turned into a mushy after school special about appreciating your family. I hope the next book in the series gets back on track.
This was a very short prequel to the third book. It could easily have been included to start the third book as it happens 25 years before, so like a prologue in the third book. It sets up the characters and the past for what happens in the third book, Dead Little Darlings.
The book was unrealistic. Something a junior high student would write. I would not recommend it anyone. If u want a good detective series invest in Michael Connelly Bosch series
It's a short intro to the missing Darling sisters. Three sisters went missing on NYE. Detective William is being assigned to look into this case and yet at the same time, he found something that doesn't add up to what their parents had been telling him. Their daughters are good girls. Are they???
It’s a race against time to find three sisters who have vanished into thin air, but the detective tasked with figuring it out has to save himself first. Short but powerful preview of what’s to come. Super read! Enjoy!!!
This was interesting and sparked my interest. Nice job for a pre-qual. I just had no idea i was reading one. I thought it was a book and was very confused when it abruptly ended.
With this only being a short prequel story, I don't think you have to read this, to understand what is going on in the main book. However, was a nice little bit of the story to read, to get a little bit more background information.
I read the whole series is 2 days because I couldn't put it down I was hooked from the description but once I started reading I ignored the world means this author is amazing I felt like I knew the characters and the way shes pulled it all together great job!!!!! Must read
Although I’m sure there’s a point to this story, I’m a pretty negative Nancy to these things.. in the case of this story, I feel like I’m missing something big... so I will just continue onto the next book and hope some clarity is gained
This story begins on New Years Day ...1995 on Seahawk Island..When Detective William Flagler gets the call that three young girls are missing ...With a teenage daughter himself , this case gets under his skin ...But with no leads and no information...What really happened to The Darling Girls ..?
I wouldn't recommend buying this novella. I was annoyed it appeared to be a full addition to the series when it is just a long prequel to the last book.
Please read my review of Pretty Little Killers for a review of the overall series.
Only mildly disappointed thinking this was a full length novel. But so good, kept my wanting to know more. Can’t wait for the conclusion with the next book!
