Everyone in Escape had heard the legend of La Lechuza. The eerie cries at night, hikers that disappear with only bones found scattered along the base of the mountain. Tales of Spanish Conquistadors who chased the owl-witch into the cave systems of Crystal Mountain hundreds of years ago has been enough to keep citizens and visitors alike from setting foot on Crystal Mountain. No one has seen the owl-witch, but all have heard her terrifying cries at night. Theme park developer Cole Jackson is determined to put the legend of La Lechuza to rest once and for all by building an underground theme park inside of Crystal Mountain. When a team of university students is sent into Crystal Mountain Caves to determine suitability for the project, they encounter a beast their zoology classes never prepared them for. La Lechuza is real and she is angry, hungry, and ready to be released.
I always enjoy a trip back to Escape, Colorado. This book began with some intense folklore and a heavy dose of worry and foreshadowing. I was eager to see how this would weave into what I already knew and loved about the Escape series. I met several interesting characters within the first few chapters of this book and was eager to watch their plans play out. Chapter 4 really amped up the action and fear that La Lechuza could induce. As the story went on, parts of it began to feel a bit inconsistent. The characters, when participating in the project, seemed a bit unrealistic in their thoughts and actions. I was still enjoying the story, but it took a little something away from it. The last few chapters got super dark and gory, while the ending left me wondering.
I had never heard of this Urband Legand so I got to read this book with no past knowledge of what it would be about. This was a really good book because it started out with explaining what the legend was and then it starts building the characters and keeps going with a great story that I had to keep reading until the end because I just needed to know what was going to happen next. I read this book all at once and boy did it pay off at the end. If you're into Urband Legands or not you will enjoy this book. It's a thriller and a little bit of a love story too. I definitely recommend this book. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 🤓❤️📚
***Word of caution to this tale, this is NOT for the faint of heart. If you don't like for a in your horror stories you probably will not like this story.***
Now, for those of us who love to be scared, I present to you La Luchza. She is ancient, she is terrifying and she is hungry. This is a fat paced, high impact horror story that takes its fire and smears it in your face. I loved it! From the tune Sophia hears the urban legend about the monster in this caves she is intrigued, as was I! The character development was sensational! The characters are relatable and likable. They are not perfect surprise brings, instead everyday kind of college students! The world building and flow of the plot worked seamlessly to create this story that pays out in the reader's mind. In order to learn what happens you have to read it! No way am I going to ruin this book for you!! It is so worth the read!! I look forward to the next A.K. Dickerson story!!
The debut horror novella by A.K. Dickerson combines classic horror chills with dynamic, well-rounded characters. For a novella, the character development is especially impressive. This isn't a book of cheap thrills, but horror fans will appreciate the ride. This is a story about a monster, but more specifically how a variety of fascinating characters face that monster. Beginning with a legendary story passed down by a grandmother-- much like a campfire tale one would tell to scare friends-- this isn't a generic story. It's a warning. From there, we have a college campus setting and plenty of misguided but well-intentioned plans that go terribly wrong, especially when they enter the mountain and caves that La Lechuza calls home. Horror fans will be rewarded with an scary, wickedly fun confrontation. Readers of all genres will enjoy following the characters through their adventures and what it means to look death in the face.
This is the debut for A.K. Dickerson and what a book. You are pulled in from the first page and won't stop until it's done. The storyline is about La Lechuze a story that Sofia grandmother had told her all her life. Sofia has gone to college and is asked to go up to Crystal Mountian with a group of students. Sofia is scared but goes, she tells Amy her roommate about the story of La Lechuze. The story is scary and you will love the way it is written. Dickerson keeps you on the edge of your chair the whole time. There are lots of twists and turns and you will love each and every one of them. Can't wait to see what is next with this author.
Spectacular story about a girl and her questions about her grandmother’s worry of what might happen if she were to move from her hometown in Mexico to a school in the mountains where La Lechuza is legended to be. When things happen on the mountain the night before she is chosen to do a special project in those mountains, the question is should she go or be afraid? You have to read this wonderful book to see exactly if La Lechuza is discovered and if so what havoc is done to those who dare explore.
Sophia is preparing to go to university, when her grandmother tells her of Le Lechuza, the owl-witch who resides on Crystal Mountain. Despite her grandmother’s warning, she brushes off the legend as myth and goes anyway. When she gets there, a series of horrific events unfold including murder, missing students from her university. When Sophia, three of her classmates and two instructors are tasked with a school project to explore the caves, havoc ensues. A fast paced horror story that doesn’t hold back on the gory details.
Horror fans, this story was written just for us. I promise you will not be disappointed! This book can either be read or listened (text to audio) to on your kindle device because the storyline is fresh, easy to follow and descriptive. The actions and reactions of the characters are so realistic. And, it contains just the "right" amount of fright. This is my second time reading Releasing La Lechuza and I hardly ever re-read books, but this one is really good and whenever I think about it, I smile.
This is a well written book. The characters and story drew me in and I had to continue reading. Although horror is not my normal choice for reading, this book handled all the elements well and I could not stop reading until I had finished the story. My only caution concerns the blood and gore used to complete the story. However, if you are looking for a good horror story, I recommend adding this to your reading material.
This is a first for Dickerson and it was knocked out of the park, or should I say cave? 😉 La Lechuza had me hooked from the first page and it only escalated from there. I literally felt like I could not read this book fast enough. The storyline is fantastic and will have you questioning and wondering about many things regarding Lechuza. And the ending.....I cannot wait to read the next book! Definitely, a must read for horror fans!
Despite the interesting premise, the writing just wasn't good. Lots of character inconsistencies and annoyingly long-winded dialogue tags that conveyed redundant information. Maybe it would have helped if the characters were better fleshed-out and given more development than simply filling the obligatory body count roles.
Wow, very interesting read. Had you hooked all the way to the very end. Dont want to post any spoliers, but i sure hope theres a book 2 out in the future. Could not but this one down. Recommend highly. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I just started this book and hour and a half ago and already finished it cuz I couldn't stop reading it! Loved the characters and the story/myth is a great telling of it. Will defenitly read the next one when it comes out.
An exciting new twist for the lovely and peaceful town of Escape, Colorado. I really loved this book and the new characters added to the community. I still want to go live there.
I received a copy from one of the authors for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation for this review. I jumped at this story solely on the fact that it was a horror novella. It didn't hurt that the monster of the book was La Lechuza. For those who do not know the story, La Lechuza is an urban legend. The legend goes is that a witch gave her soul to the devil. According to legend, people will see a half owl- half woman creature. This is Lechuza. If this is a disturbing image, A.K. Dickerson, an author duo, prove to make the image even more disturbing with the deaths of the characters. The story is filled with an ensemble cast, each figure with their own motivations and struggles. The group come together to study the wildlife and plants of a mountainous cave. In the process, they get more than what they wanted. As I was reading this novella, I felt a bit of a monster movie nostalgia. I am big on monster movies and the mix of gore horror with monster movie feel really grabbed me. Now, let me rephrase that, I don't mean SyFy or Kaiju monster (though I love those), I mean there is a monster movie feel that is similar to the black and white movies. Not Dracula but not Them. Sort of in the middle. Whatever the case may be, I had that feel and it was great. The story is gory but not enough to really deter you from the reading. If anything, it just enhances the feeling of fear. The story is simple but enjoyable and it doesn't prevent you from forming a relationship with one of the characters. I personally liked Sofia and Roman the best. All in all, I enjoyed the novella and will be reading more from the authors. Final Rating: 3/5
