. What are attachment difficulties? · How do they affect children? · How can you help?
This book provides clear and concise answers to these important questions - and more.
Much more than just a simple introduction to the subject of attachment, the book is also full of advice and practical ideas you can try. It tackles some challenging questions, such as 'what is the difference between trauma and attachment?', and explains how having an understanding of attachment is only part of the overall picture when it comes to caring for traumatized children.
It is an essential read for any adult parenting or caring for a child who has experienced attachment difficulties.
Betsy de Thierry is a trained psychotherapist and a qualified primary school teacher who has founded several charities that work directly with troubled families.
A good general overview of attachment difficulties, written in a friendly and easy-to-read way which give you a summary of the main areas of this big topic. As it's only just over a hundred pages and there's a lot of ground covered, it's more of an introduction and the "simple guide" bit of the title is an accurate description, so I'll most likely go away and do my own research on the areas I found most interesting to me - cortisol's role on children's behaviour and the overlap between trauma and attachment.
A gentle overview of attachment theory, how attachment can become disrupted and how to help repair the way a child relates to you as the caregiver and others. I am not sure if this book addresses the issues in our family, but there are some good ideas and reinforcement of what I already do naturally. I think this book would help any parent or caregiver whose child struggles with attachment. And the author does so in a nonjudgmental way.
I can't recommend Betsy's Simple Guide series enough! As a social worker I recommend them to foster carers all the time. They break down abstract concepts and theories into every day language with practical takeaways.
The second 'Simple Guide' I've read by Betsy De Thierry. I would highly recommend, as there is a wealth of information packed into this short book, yet it remains an easy read.
An interesting read as a prospective adopter. Helpful to understand some of the challenges around attachment in children and how to help them form strong bonds.
