Appealing photos feature large rooms with interesting architectural features, white slipcover design furniture and a rotating display of throw pillows, blankets, candles and other tchotchkes in varied colors (precisely the kind of things sold at Pottery Barn?) I found myself wondering where on earth one would store all of the “off duty” room decor.
While the seasonal displays were interesting and it was impressive to see how changing the color scheme of all of the room’s accessories truly made the space feel completely different, naturally the book reads as a bit dated, having been published in the early aughts. If this book was written today, surely the rooms would be lighter, brighter and less cluttered. Nary a fiddle leaf fig in the whole book!

I 'won' this book as prize at a Pottery Barn decorating workshop in the Salem store one day; it's not one I would have sought out for myself. Looking quickly through the book's pictures, I was sure I would like this one less than the Dining Rooms book I had read, since the styles in this one appeared more rustic, which usually isn't my style.
However, I ended up liking Living Rooms a little bit better. It was beautifully and clearly written, there were a few really nice day-to-night room transformations pictured, and I learned some new things about design - that a surface like a clear glass vase can be considered a texture, and that accessories in materials like bronze and wood, not just colors, can give a room a warm or cool feel.
My only criticism of this book is that there were two separate chapters for Accessories and Display, which I think could have been one. I understand the content would be too long for one chapter, but I would have liked maybe Artwork & Wall Decor as one chapter and Accessories (like tabletop stuff in another.) All in all, an enjoyable book.

My sister was visiting and she mentioned that she was going to go home and rearrange her living room furniture. It reminded me that I had this book wich was a gift and dug it out. I had forgotten how much good stuff was in it. I am not really a big Pottery Barn fan, but this book has awesome basic decorating ideas for any home. Pictures tell a good story while the text explains what one is striving for.

I love PB's use of natural elements & textures! While occasionally their rooms can feel stark to me, overall I love the PB style!

A book I like to revisit as I seem to change my living/dining room layout every couple of months. Pinterest has likely decreased the sale of such books. But I think if it as an old friend, waiting to give advice when I am ready to listen.
