While this book in particular was Uncomfortable to read and I've had similar experience once with a manga (that I will never recommend to anyone) it was surprisingly good, each story had some deeper meaning behind them. As of now their are 3 books in the installment, and you can read them as stand alone. These books have common theme of 6 tales told in different settings.
In this book we witness Hokasono-san telling these strange stories to a man. And as these stories unfold we get a clear picture of Hokasono-san and the other guy. (Manga has very subtle hints which I didn't notice until the end). We explore the relation between him and the guy he is telling stories to and (why is he telling those stories?) Over the Span of each tale hokasono-san's weight keeps on increasing drastically.
Ch 1:- Black prayer beads Yuu is an auto mechanic. One day she gets a call from her old classmate, that she is willing to buy used car from her. This classmate is referred as "Q" who is filthy rich. Yuu has never liked her but jumps in to help her anyways. Q buys the old car without any negotiation but on the other hand asks to take her new car away and dump it somewhere. While filling the paper work yuu notices that she is wearing a wristband which is made out of prayer beads. Instead of dumping the car Yuu decides to repair it and sell it at good price. As stange thing start happening Yuu is left with questions of whether it's something to do with the car and the mystery behind Q's wristband.
Ch 2:- Inside out K is a craftsman who has ability to see ghost, when a former worker asks him to take a look at his place. K is quick to notice the ominous feeling surrounding the neighborhood. And the truth behind the haunted houses with countless spirits.
Ch 3:- Left Arm A young police officer is assigned job to visit every house and collect information for a survey. While doing so a lady warns him to be careful about the 4th floor. The officer ignores her warning and goes on with the survey but notices something terrifying. Upon telling this incident to his colleague, he gets to know the twisted person who owned that building was rumoured to buy human body parts particularly "the left arm". Now that he knows the twisted rumour, will he go inside the house for the survey?
Ch 4- Message Ueda Ryouji is a typical 4th grader. As he is going home late after helping his teacher at school notices an unfamiliar kid going at the abandoned wooden bathroom which students usually avoid. Out of curiosity Udea goes in to check on him only to find that kid lying down whispering "it's enough" and then disappearing into thin air. This tale was rather a happy one with a tragic back story.
Ch 5:- Impirity A man is rushed into the hospital with scissor stabbed in the palm and his back scalded upon further inspection it is seen that he has numerous wounds and fractures. The doctor becomes concerned and asks him about the injuries to which he tells that his twin daughters are cursed by abourted fetuses. Which the company he is working at is secretly trafficking for medical research. But is it really? or there's more to the story.
(We see that Hokasono-san has gotten so obese, that he is unable to wear any clothes and We now know Where he is kept and who the other guy in picture is.)
Chp 6:- Snuff Videos T/W:- Contains extremely graphic artwork. Yasuichi-san is a rich brat who likes Creepy things/movies. His recent obsession is collecting snuff videos which he likes to watch with his friend. His behaviour starts changing after watching those videos to the point that he finds pleasure in his own dogs death. The story is told from his friends perspective after he is left with the mystery of Yasuichi-san's gruesome death. And what exactly happened that night after Yasuichi-san saw the cursed video of a girl dying.
After the last story we are left with so many questions:- Was Hokasono-san Insane? Why was he in the asylum? And the mystery of his obesity? Was he cursed to? Did he committed all these crimes and presented them as horror stories? 😂Did the doctor survive?
I haven't read "Turn of the key by Ruth ware" but the way it was pitched gaves me an impression that it's similar to this manga. So if you want to take a plunge, maybe give it a try (only if you aren't Squamish about Voilent art)
On a completely unrelated note, this volume reminds me of " American Horror Story ". Not the stories, just small things like the pig head picture on the shirt reminds of "Piggy Piggy" in AHS season 1 , "Snuff Videos" reminds me of " AHS:Freak Show " and the asylum reminds of, of course, " AHS:Asylum ".
Ok, back to the manga. This is the third and final volume of this horror manga trilogy. What I really like was this whole volume is portrayed as a guy telling these horror stories to another man. As we go on with the stories, the storyteller become stranger and stranger so, there's also a parallel horror story with that. The stories itself are just average. The story "Message", though, was not that scary but cute and bittersweet.
This entire series feels like a more R-rated, knock off version of Masaaki Nakayama’s works such as Fuan no Tane and PTSD Radio. So many panels looked like they were desperately trying to capture and recreate the eerie, ghoulish essence of the aforementioned manga series.
Some of the tales were creepy though, and it was cool to see this style of story with Hokazono’s gore and violence thrown into the mix. A few of the illustrations were imaginative and spoopy.
a semi disappointing collection considering its incredible potential.
obscure and open stories, there are some thoroughly examined metaphors and the art is alright in the frightfulness, in spite of the dreary equation of communicating with similar looks and so forth (likewise, it's truly forgettable), that sort of awfulness doesn't contact me definitely. the mental part is strong, has intriguing reactions of numerous things, and great exemplifications. it is a pity that it isn't intricate and stalls out in straightforwardness, leaving escape clauses that could be very much investigated. so, conceivably squandered which is quite sad.
The stories got better and better in this collection of short stories. I never thought the fat man telling the stories would have such and end, and I felt so touch by the story called" Message" . The scene were the kid cut himself was kind of gross but I do enjoy all the stories. I just hope I don't start getting weight by reading so much horror tales.
