This book is a look at coiled pottery with both historical examples and descriptions of the methods of contemporary and ethnic potters who build in this way. It also discusses different approaches to making and decorating, as well as aesthetic qualities of the work. In this colour edition, the author has brought the contemporary section up to date and included many new colour photographs throughout the book. This is the classic book on the subject and it should appeal not only to potters but to anyone interested in the history of art and cultural studies.
I'm so happy I stumbled on this book at a university sale. while there is some outdatedness in here I've literally never seen Indigenous potters named and their immense skill documented in a way that states them as artists rather than anthropological wonders.
This is not a 'how to' book but along the lines of a reference for those interested in the traditional and contemporary origins and methods for coiled pottery.
This a re-issue of the original publication and there may be a few updated photos since the original book was published but I was disappointed that there was not more of her current work in the latest issue.
