Robinson Crusoe was probably one of the best books that I have ever read in my life! Daniel Defoe made a literary masterpiece here! Robinson Crusoe is about a boy named Robinson Crusoe and he is born into a steady family. His parents wanted him to be an accountant because that is what their family business is, but Crusoe loved the sea! He became a sailor, but unfortunately his voyages do not go very well. His first voyage, the ship Crusoe is on gets shipwrecked and rescued by another boat. The second voyage was Crusoe's only successful voyage. The third voyage, Crusoe gets shipwrecked and stranded on an island. He is stuck there for 25 years until one day he finds something out of the ordinary on the beach, and finds out that he is not the only person on the island! Once you pick up this book you really cannot put it down! When I finished it I did not want it to end! One of the things that makes this book so great is the reality of it. It is not one of those books where some kid gets super powers or something far fetched like that, it is about a guy who gets stranded on a desert island! That could happen to anyone! Another thing that makes this book so great is that it takes a regular plot and turns it into something extraordinary! This is the plot: Kid has love for ocean wants to be a sailor but the parents do not want him to be one. Does not listen to them, becomes a sailor. Gets stranded on a desert island. Sound like a typical "adults are always right" kind of plot right? Wrong. Along the way there are unexpected suprises along the way! Overall, Defoe made a great book that should be read for centuries to come because of its reality and plot!
I have read this novel when I was a teenager and enjoyed it very much. I read it now and have enjoyed even more. An excellent adventure story that shows the resilience and strength of the human spirit.
I've always been familiar with this tale but have not read the complete story until now. It has a bit more gravitas than what I originally knew about the story-- the reason behind why Crusoe left home, delving deeper into his mindset dealing with his situation, a surprising amount of internalizing with God (which seemed to have been left out from the kid version and cartoon adaptation of this book). This particular is pretty cool too because it had side notes about some terms used in the book, like "pieces of eight" or "doubloon"; as well as some snippets of historical information that ties into the story-- "The Mutiny on the Bounty" and Britain reverting to a monarchy. Overall, it's a great story to read (even with all the God-talk) plus you get a history lesson to boot.
The maps and trivia make the story more readable. Connections to the real world and from where Defoe drew inspiration from have been listed in the form of small illustrations and infographics. Enjoyed reading it.
DK is great! This is a great companion to the book. It has lots of pictures and describes many things from that time era (like slaves, farming, and sailing).
