Karina Ashworth is willing to pay any price to be with the man she loves—a notorious fixer and the only man capable of making her walk away from everything she has ever known.

But power corrupts the soul too easily, and once Uilleam Runehart has his taste of it, there’s nothing he craves more. And when it comes to what he wants most, there is no line he won’t cross to get it.

With secrets plaguing them, and truths becoming harder and harder to tell, the things left unsaid between them might be their ruin.

Merciless.
Shameless.
Remorseless.

I love this couple so much, but gaaahhh...knowing something is going to happen doesn't lessen the impact when it finally comes to fruition. The ending of this book gutted me. I thought I was prepared. I wasn't. Sniff. However, as much as I enjoyed this installment in the THE KINGMAKER SAGA I can't quite rate it as high as the first book. I found this one to be a little too long and drawn out at times. Most notably the first 25% I found especially slow and hard to get into. However, it did pick up in pace as the story went along.

description

Now, I am well aware that this saga has A LOT of moving parts to it. Backstories and the recruitment of certain DEN members etc. Uilleam's rise to ultimate power. His and Karina's relationship. His relationship with his brother. Karina's relationship with her sister and mother. It is also going to span several years, so I did try and keep that in mind when I was reading. Alas, it just didn't quite have the same impact on me as much as the first book did.

However, it was still a cracking good read. This couple has such fantastic chemistry. There are excellent secondary characters. No OW or OM drama. Hot sexy times. Amazing plot and character development. A heartbreaking cliffhanger. It left me excited to see what happens next, so for that reason alone, it gets two thumbs up!

Reread 6/27/2022 in preparation for Alpha Omega. I'm going to add notes at the very bottom later about plot details that will likely connect to the last installment.

~

She hadn’t forgotten there were still so many secrets left between them.
“Do you think he would understand?”
It went beyond a simple miscommunication.
She couldn’t even say she was particularly evading.
She had outright lied to him about everything from the very beginning. It didn’t matter that she loved him with every part of her being and that none of that had been fake or pretend.
There was a chance none of that would matter to him at all.
He could very well just see it as a betrayal.

description

“It should no longer surprise me that you know as much as you do.”
She cringed, so easily forgetting herself and the careful life she had constructed, but she nearly breathed a very audible sound of relief.
“You’re very good at your job.”
She was.
But she was also very good at manipulating the truth to fit her needs.
They had that in common.

In part II to the Kingmaker Saga Uilleam & Karina's relationship progresses - but I was left with a keen sense of dread while it progressed because of the amount of secrets both of them were holding from one another, Karina in particular. In fact, one thing that makes this series stand out from all the other mafia & organized crime romances I've read is how the author has created a complex heroine full of agency. On the surface Karina may seem demure, but this is a young woman who comes from a family of means that Uilleam has not fully realized because he has been blinded by love. This added a level of suspense to the story that kept my attention, despite the pace being very slow for the first half. London Miller's writing style is excellent, meticulous, & detail-oriented, which I appreciate. This is not a fast, quick read. The last few weeks for me have been hectic at times, so I kept this book on the back-burner, but it was never forgotten. By the time I reached 75% I couldn't put this book down. The slow pace isn't a criticism, because it's what made the last 15% so compelling. Like Karina, Uilleam almost had me fooled. Just when I was thinking Uilleam seemed a rather soft anti-hero, events occurred that left me devastated. There's an all too human characterization of Uilleam and Karina that I have to give the author props for crafting.

In this life she’d wanted for herself, she lived modestly within the means afforded to her by the paper. Everything about Uilleam, from the homes he bought to the cars he drove, were all grand in comparison.
Larger than life almost.
That was how he seemed.
So far above the clouds that he could be watched and admired but was too far away to actually be touched.
She wanted to right wrongs while he wanted to make more of them.
The impossibility of what they were had made her think maybe they were fated—that there could be something amazing between them because they fit like two puzzle pieces.
Now … now, she knew how wrong she had been.
She should have known better.

The level of self-awareness Karina has is refreshing to see in a heroine. I said in the last book I appreciated the moral grayness the author gave Karina (I feel too often authors write morally gray men, but I'm liking having a morally gray heroine as well), and that I could see how Karina was attracted to Uilleam, his lifestyle, despite knowing better. Lo and behold she recognizes how she was attracted to his lifestyle and that she should have known better. Then she takes action to move on, like anyone with a solid head on their shoulders would. This turn of events is not the heroine taking the most moral route though - I see the potential for Karina to become an even darker shade of gray, though I'm not sure the author will take this route in the next book.
It was at this moment that she knew this was the man he was. Something dark and formidable hidden behind a beautiful smile. She hadn’t been foolish enough to believe she could change him. She’d just underestimated the monster that lived and breathed inside him.
The man who was willing to do anything to get what he wanted.
He’d shown her, more than once, but she’d elected to ignore it because she loved him.
Now … now, she had a choice to make.
It was time to leave.

description

“If you’re not in line with me,” he returned easily, meeting his stoic gaze, “then you’re already an enemy.”

Uilleam's rise, or was it his descent? Was chilling to witness. In book 1 his humanity shown through, but the author did a fabulous job of demonstrating Uilleam's ruthlessness in this installment. As a reader I am tired of angry, raving, over the top male main characters that come across as cartoonish villains. Both Uilleam and Karina feel like real people to me. To add to this, I have interesting experiences of knowing two people who have been involved in organized crime. One of them is an estranged family member who spent time in a white collar prison. The other I met while he was doing community service because his operation in the U.S & Brazil had been caught by the FBI. These experiences, though not extensive within the world of organized crime, lead me to value when authors take the time to research organized crime and include such research in their stories. It adds a level of authenticity that I appreciate.
The rumors were certainly true: It was very lonely at the top.
Karina, as much as he’d loved her and the way he felt as if he was complete when he was with her, had been a distraction. A beautiful distraction he’d quite enjoyed losing himself in as much as he possibly could, but to get to where he was now … he couldn’t be soft.
She’d made him that way.
But now that he was here, and people quaked in the face of his name alone, distraction or not, he wanted her back.

description
Was this what it felt like to die while still living?
It certainly felt that way.
She didn’t care that her wounds were healing, including the stitches down the length of her stomach, or that she was alive and breathing.
None of it mattered.
None of it made a difference because Poppy was still gone

w. o. w.

This is shaping up to be quite the trilogy. And here I thought those were all but dead. London miller has out done herself so far, but ill wait to write a longer review when the final installment is published.

But I will say one thing...
While the writing is fantastic, the characters have depth, and the plot is fresh and exciting...
...
the romance seems doomed to fail. Not sure how the hero will ever be capable of redeeming himself. He needs to loose an eye for what he did. So I'll be on the edge of my seat until the next book comes out.

Message me privately if you want the details.

5 The Beginning Of The End Stars

If you have read any of London Miller’s books, than you already know that this bloody woman can write a dark, gritty, and captivating story like no other. She has this amazing craft to suck her readers into the dark abyss she creates and keeps them on the edge of their seat from start to finish. WR: The Fall was utterly unputdownable. I cried. Sobbed. Never before have I ever shed as many tears over a book. London has slayed with this series!

"It was too dark, too widely splashed, too savage . . ."

White Rabbit: The Fall is THE book Miller fans have been waiting for. We finally get the answers on what ultimately happened to Uilleam and Karina. If you have read the Mercenaries series London gives us just a little tease that had me DYING to know the secrets that have laid dormant for so long.

Uilleam and Karina are key players in the Mercenaries series and now its time to see how the Belladonna and Kingmaker are born. How their love for one another turned to bitter hate and contempment.

"I warned you of the perils of falling in love with dangerous men. It never ends well."

The story begins with Uilleam raising his army, and becoming a name for himself. Building an empire, built on wealth and power. He has many enemies that would love nothing more than to have his head on a silver platter. Cold and detached he hides behind a mask, and his only weakness Karina. But once word comes out that he indeed has a weakness all bets are off the table.... No one is safe in this game called chess. WR: The Fall broke my heart, the amount of immense pain that these two go through will rip you to shreds. The cliffhanger ending will destroy you.

Uilleam’s world will crumble.
Karina’s life is forever tainted.

A path that leads to vengeance and revenge is the only thing running in their minds.

I will keep this review short, so I don’t spoil anything. But I will say one thing… this book.. this series… is a must read. London Miller’s hands down best work yet.

Now we wait. . .
The third book . . is going to kill me. . .

Oh Uilleam, Uilleam. Just like Karina do I love or hate you?

Without a shadow of a doubt I love Karina, Uilleam I have a more love-hate relationship with, though both characters 'speak' to me and I feel their emotion, their connection and their explosive love. Despite knowing where the story was going to end (from the Den books) the journey to reach that point was totally new. There were actions and reactions that brought me close to tears, but those final few chapters - they broke me. I think I possibly cried as many tears as the characters did.

The games, the twists, the manipulations are just mind blowing. On the surface the plot seems so simple, where actually it is the most complex of patterns, woven from dozens of different threads, all merging together in a way that you don't see the bigger picture until it is too late. I found myself second and third guessing so many things, and rarely being right on any of them!

I am really torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars on here (since 4 is 'really liked'), though it will be 5 on Amazon. Overall I REALLY did love this book. The last two thirds were definitely 5 stars but (and I hate that there is a'but') I did struggle to stay engaged at around the 25 - 30% mark. I can't say for sure if this was just 'me' struggling with what is one heck of a long read (around 7 hours), me knowing some of what was to come and being desperate to get there, or the pace just not being quite there.

However once I got past that 'lull' point I read it in one sitting, until 1.30am no less, because I simply couldn't put this down. I was on a a runaway train, speeding towards a catastrophic crash but I didn't want to get off and I most certainly couldn't look away.

I started the book, which by the way is not a stand alone and needs to be read after White Rabbit: The Rise , wanting a HEA for Uilleam and Karina. Even knowing some of where the story was heading there palpable love made me yearn desperately for this. By the 3/4 point I was a little peeved with Uilleam, by the 4/5ths mark I decided he didn't deserve Karina and could rot in a hell of his own making. But the end, oh the end *snivel, sob, wail* - made me waver just a fraction. Lets just say London Miller is going to have to do some persuading to redeem this man, though if there's an author who can do that, it is her.

You can read The Kingmaker Saga without having read the Den of Mercenaries series. There are events in those books that are pertinent to this series but one of the things I really love is that these events are explained again, but with a different perspective and background. This means you know some of what will happen, but you don't know ALL the truths, nor the impact it has on others.

Before I finish I do have to mention how much I love Isla and Skorpion. A sign of a good book is one where side characters demand a book of their own. Skorpion had already got one, though these books are giving me a lot of background to him that I'm sure will give me a whole new insight when I re-read it. Isla also needs her own book(s), she is a woman with one heck of a story to tell.

The pain and revenge started

I received an ARC in exchange of honest review

This roller coasters of emotions continued in this installment. I read all the Den of mercenaries series and I was very anxious to read this saga. The kingmaker was a character that caught me since his first appearance, and with every book my anxiety grows more and more. There was moments when I hate him and then just like a switch my feelings turns in love. The same happens with Belladonna and with everything that we read and the things she’s doing to the kingmaker just keeps me wonder what happened with this two.

The first book started all this journey and we were able to know just a little about Uilleam and Karina, but this second book is probably the one that developed all the secrets or some of them and to be honest, I just can’t helped, I cry a lot. For how the last book of the Den of mercenaries ended I have an idea of some of the things that happens to Karina, Kit and Uilleam, but still got me unguarded. I fell for Karina and completely understand her pain, hate and revenge toward Uilleam. As for him, well I wish him the worst but also not. It’s love/hate, just can helped to feel different.

As always happens with London’s work, this ones is a masterpiece, she gets better and better with every book, and I don’t know how is that possible because she’s already the best.
I love this book and the waiting for book 3 is going to be a very painful and stressful time.
I can’t said much because I may do some spoilers, big spoilers, so I’ll just keep my mouth shut and let you find out on your own, but please do it, this books are awesome.

Thank you so much to London Miller for the ARC.

Without a doubt, London brings us a crazy love-hate relationship between Uilleam and Karina.
A relationship of intrigue, secrets, pain, and sorrow. A love that grows despite all odds.

Uilleam had moments when I hated him and on the other hand, I loved him painfully.
Karina does not give up, walks between the raindrops, cautious, calculates every move. Wants to know, wants to enter to his heart and hold the love she feels for him.

Uilleam remained with me until almost the middle of the book a mysterious figure. I wanted to know more and contain the raging emotions inside.

There were times when I closed the book and took a deep breath. The strong scenes brought me in moments of crisis and tears.
It was like being on a roller coaster, ups, downs, twists and flattened out, until recent episodes.

Highly recommend, absolutely 5 stars.
so take your time. Start with the first book White Rabbit: The Rise and continue to this book.
Now I need the next book, I'm waiting to see how London is weaving everything in the package and closing the edges.

Lines were drawn in the sand and sides taken at the conclusion of book 1. Now Karina and Uilleam, the main couple, feel even more connected and cemented as a couple than ever before, despite the secrets and uncertainty that seem to always swirl around them. Trust, however, is a fragile thing. When it is broken, love and devotion come into question.

They may call Uilleam the Kingmaker, but risk taker is more like it, folks. Foolishly thinking business as usual needs to remain the game plan leads to unimaginable, heart breaking consequences for both of them. I have no words to describe the jaw dropping, double punch to the heart cliffhanger ending. Book 3 simply cannot come fast enough. Here’s to hoping it is just around the corner.

Title: The White Rabbit: The Fall, Series: The Kingmaker Saga (Book 2), Author: London Miller, Pages: 434, not a stand-alone (read book 1 first), criminal hero, journalist heroine, very steamy scenes, some violence, to be continued, ends in shocking major cliffhanger.

(I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not given any payment or compensation for this review, nor is there any affiliation or relationship between this reviewer and the author/publisher/PR firm.)

5 Ugly Crying Stars

London,
I knew from Bethany-Kris that I would need tissues. I knew in my heart before that, this book would gut me. It is called The Fall. I was on the edge of my seat this entire book. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was not prepared. This book (damn, I’m still crying), majestic. I don’t know how you continue to create stories that just keep getting better. Bravo!
Without giving too many spoilers, you will get a glimpse of Uilleam creating the den, early beginnings for some of the favorites. Skorpion is still present and we get a brief glimpse of Orion (sigh).
My favorite parts (that ruminate through my mind when I tried to sleep, but this book was so great, I couldn’t turn the thoughts off):

She brought him peace even as he didn’t deserve it. And if he kept her tucked away where nothing could get to her, he knew he’d only bruise her wings.

“Because they would be the center of our universe. And you know what my first gift would be?” she asked, her voice gentler now as she remembered her very favorite story as a little girl. Of exploring wonderland and all it had to offer …“A little white rabbit.”

“Could you not do it just because I asked?”“It depends on why you’re asking.” There was a reason behind everything he did. “I can’t give you a reason.” “That doesn’t make any sense. Why now?”
“There will always be things I can’t share with you, Karina. That’s just the way it is.”
She met his gaze, unblinking. “And there will be times when you won’t get to decide what I do.”

He knew, if she ever learned the truth, it wouldn’t matter. She wouldn’t remember this part of it— that he’d been there to wipe her tears and make her forget about her troubles for a while— she would only ever remember the rest of it.

“Answer! I want to know. What was I? A pawn? A bishop? A quee—” “You were what I needed you to be at the time,” he finally answered as if she had ripped the truth right out of him despite how much he didn’t want to say it. And somehow, those words hurt worse.

I think this book has ruined me for the rest of the day. I don’t know if I can face going to work tomorrow, let alone the thought of waiting for the next book. London, I hope you are stocked up on Mountain Dew and pineapple pizza while writing book 3. Thank you for the ARC. It was a privilege to read it.

I still can’t decide whether to sit in the corner and cry or get up and throw the tablet against the wall. The author warned that it would hurt. But I did’t think that London Miller would put a chainsaw into my heart. White Rabbit: The Fall has a very adequate title. Because as a reader of this masterpiece I fell. I fell and I can’t get up...

This part is full of ups and downs in Uilleam and Karina’s relationship. On the one hand, we have here an unearthly chemistry connecting these two and on the other hand at times as the reader I have undermined the strength of their feelings. Especially when it comes to Uilleam. His character confused me so much that I can’t decide if I love him or hate him... I suppose both. In this part we also experience a series of flashbacks in which we return to the Den Mercenaries series.

Power. Violence. Lies. Secrets. Indescribable lust. This book contains it all and so much more!

This book is genius because together with the main characters I experienced a total rollecoaster of emotions. And the ending... it just broke me down. London Miller completely destroyed me...
I still can’t wrap my head around it and I finished this read a few days ago.

Just... read this book. It will reveal all your emotions. I haven’t experienced such a catharsis in a long time...

Who is ugly crying over here? 🙋🏾‍♀️ Me!! I am! I am just all over the place with this book. I love these people....I mean characters...I mean I love them like they are real people and I am just heartbroken! The back stories for some of my favs helped soften the blows but to know and not know what was going to happen was intense! Now to be honest London warned us. She said it was going to hurt but DAMN!! This was cutting with damn near surgical precision. I can truly appreciate just how excellent London Miller is as an author because the way this story is written in conjunction with the other stories is masterful. I feel like I know more but still not nearly enough. I loved and hated every second of how everything came to fruition but I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT!!!!

A ten star read. I want to shake and kiss this author at the same time!!! This author continues to write amazing stories that suck you and from the beginning. The story of Karina and Ulliem continues and we now get a better picture of why Karina becomes Belladonna. There are still a lot of missing pieces to the puzzle but many questions are answered. This book was amazing absolutely amazing. Karina and Uliliums relationship is explosive, their chemistry is off the charts. I like how we get to see a little bit of The Kingmaker humanized in this book. Then he ruins it. Not that we expected anything less from him. The ending killed me and now I will anxiously await what happens next!!!!

Reading this book was difficult due to constant plot, grammar and spelling mistakes. In a lapse of three pages the author forgets that H is on the coast of Antigua and changes the setting to Brazil. The book begins with h leaving school of girls but we were told in the previous book that boys in her school were not interested in her. The h is investigating a story about a hotel owner who divorced his previous wife and remarried within 2 weeks but is now divorced one year later yet they have 2 kids old enough to have a party in the backyard. There were many many examples of these plot inconsistencies that felt like author was just making things up as she was moving forth. The pronouns didn’t make sense in many points and it was not clear which character the pronoun was referring to. If you have 2 males in a scene and they are both referred to as he, which one is it? Also the grammar was very off at times and I’m not American so if it was enough for me to notice and be distracted by, there is definitely an issue here that needs addressing.

On the positive side, I think the author is a talented story creator. But she needs to work on her art of story telling. Many details are mentioned but not explained or shown. Important plot points are left out. How is it possible that H who is depicted as so powerful and clever, has no clue who h is. What does h’s family really do? What does H really do in “fixing”?

I’m at a lost for words...and that never happens.
Oh London, I swear I think you were trying to kill me. My heart is aching with that ending....and I don’t know how I’m going to trek on until the next one comes out.

Prepare yourself...the last half of the book will rip you into two, and cause you to ball your eyes out to the point you have to remind yourself it’s fictional. Lol (I’m a tad dramatic)

When I first started on the LM train- I grew to loathe the Kingmaker -I mean how could you not right? And the more he was uncovered through each book and spin off series you grew more and more curious. Who is this guy? Why is he so ruthless? Who BROKE him? And then when Belladonna was born...you grew to hate her too. Why why why, are you so vengeful woman? What in the world happened? LM took two of the most (probably) hated characters and got you to then fall in love them, grow attached to them, ROOT for them only to basically kill you once you were fully invested. My head is literally spinning. I’ve had to try to gather my words for this one to many times, bc I didn’t know how to put my emotions to paper. Now I know why these two are a 5-part series. They’re both so complicated and they’re love has gotten more and more messy as the story has unfolded and progressed., They have such a story to tell, there’s NO possible way they could be limited to just one book— they definitely needed the 5 anticipated! So we’re in for a bumpy ride....

With that being said, this one will blow you away. From the highs and lows and in between, Ullieam and Karina are one hell of a rollercoaster that you just can’t get enough of. Additionally, each supporting character was so well thought out, I truly look forward to each of their stories being told at some point or another (Isla especially). Still waiting on the HEA for this....so I truly look forward to seeing how it unfolds.

And I agree with BK, this is some of your best work yet!
Dammit Ullieam! Was my entire mantra for the last half of the book. So good luck with that peeps!

Wow, I’m speechless. I knew it was coming, was warned it was coming but still hit me hard after I read it.
First off, London, these have been your best books to date and you should be proud of them! It was so worth the wait for you to write such an engaging story.
Answers! We got answers into Karina and Uilleam. And it is definitely a fall. I really don’t know how you can come back from this. Not trying to give to much away but I can understand now why these two people become who they are. Ugh, Uilleam. I have a complete love/hate relationship with him. He loves hard but can’t express it. Karina loves too much and it becomes her fall.
I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this book and really am looking forward to the next installment. It’s living up to the hype!! I love it!

Tears. Oh, poppy and a field of poppy’s was very emotional. There are things that I wanted to have happen. I wanted her “death” to be from the restaurant. That he would KNOW what he did. What it cost them. How badly his actions have spiraled their love into something so horrid. I thought Kit would be around. Maybe even Orion but at least Karina has her sister and over achieving mother in her corner. I can see Karina rising like a Phoenix and burning the Kingmakers world to the ground. He deserves that and more. Then while she is at it she can go back to that Claire woman and fix the mistake there so that Hugh gets his life back. In fact I thought that would be her first thing to rectify but she didn’t.🙃

This book just broke me into goddamn pieces.

I don't even know how to feel. The way London has shaped The Kingmaker and Belladonna's character, both of their characters are soul jarring and just strikes a chord inside me. I wanted to hate The Kingmaker but I couldn't. I love him and the shades of gray London so amazingly had painted. Karina's character is mind blowing. I loved her tenacity, her desperate notion to hold her love dear, her trauma everything. The ending made me cry. I am in such a bad place right now. Just waiting eagerly for the next book in the saga.

Following the Den of Mercenaries series I waited in anticipation for the story behind the story.... and it was well worth the wait. The emotions behind these two characters have made me want to re read the whole series to put it all back into perspective! The complicated stories sucks you in. I didn’t put my phone down once. A must read!

"He was the dream she never wanted to wake up from."

As the first book, the beginning of this one was slow too but as some truths came out, I could feel more connected with both Uilleam & Karina. Their chemistry was palpable and damn that cliffhanger has left me feeling so shocked and eager to read the next book asap!

OMG OMG OMG OMG

I don't know how Uilleam will redeem himself for what he has done unknowingly. The cliffhanger killed me.

So wild and angsty. Can't wait to read the next book.

Well now. Karina is a fantastic character. I loved part 2 where we pick right up and feel the deep love H and h have for each other. But we know this is leading to something pretty wild. Again, the writing is so eloquent and subtle that you never get the in your face violent aggression that this story is expected to bring.

The Kingmaker and his Poppet

It's always great to have a chance to look into the mind of The Kingmaker but getting to see into Karina's mind as well. As much as the two of them loved each other, they didn't love enough to share everything. This is the reason for their downfall. I'm excited to read part 3!
