Wonky Inn #4

Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot

Rate this book
There’s a psychic fayre heading to Whittlecombe.

Alf, the witch, didn’t see it coming … perhaps she should have done.

Whittle Inn is up and running and gaining in popularity. Proud owner Alfhild Daemonne can afford to relax, can’t she?
Apparently not.

When her neighbouring inn decides to host the south west region’s largest ever Psychic and Holistic Convention, you’d think that would allow Alf the opportunity to make lots of new friends. Think of it! Dozens and dozens of fortune tellers, mediums, diviners, psychics, rune-tellers, witch doctors, and even a voodoo priestess from New Orleans – all gathered together in one big field.

Not so.

Alf is banned from attending the Fayre and looks set to miss out - until Wizard Shadowmender sends her on an undercover operation that is.

In the meantime, someone is sending Alf death threats and many of her friends in the village of Whittlecombe are subject to fearful fortune tellings and terrible tarot readings at the Fayre.

It appears that dark forces are gathering in Whittlecombe.

Will Alf make it to her 31st birthday?

And just who is it that wishes her harm?

Praise for The Wonkiest Witch: Wonky Inn Book 1

‘Finally a strong, adventurous fun female witch.’ Amazon Reviewer

‘Emotionally thrilling, action packed, and engaging adventure filled with unknown danger, dark secrets and some seriously wonky magic..... Highly entertaining!’ Amazon Reviewer

‘This book is awesome the characters are amazing, and the writing is out of this world good.’ Amazon Reviewer

‘The characters are so full of life that they jump out of the page.’ Amazon Reviewer

‘I so enjoyed this deliciously quirky (and, yes, wonky!) story. I expected it to be good but it is much better than that. I'm not sure how to slide this entertaining story into a genre 'slot' but I also don't think it's very important to label it with anything other than "a surprisingly wonderful adventure". I love it and I highly recommend it and sincerely hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.’ Amazon Reviewer

I wanted to give this a lower rating because it is so short but just like a great serial it leaves you on a cliffhanger so I’m off to read the next book. If you liked the first 3 books in the series you’ll like this one just as much if not better.

Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarots - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Quite a mouthful of a title, but an intriguing introduction to the spooky tale within. The excellent author Jeannie Wycherley triumphs again, with book 4 in the Wonky Inn series, that fulfills fantasies, keeps one's appetite for cozy mysteries satisfied and makes you feel happy and relaxed, despite the spooky goings-on at the Whittle (aka Wonky) Inn.
This time Alf(hilda)'s rival at the Hay Loft has gone over to the dark side, lured by the temptation of riches by the evil Mori, who are the nemesis of witches everywhere - particularly for the often stressed Alf. Luckily she has a new beau, Detective George Gilchrist and the ever-capable (human) manageress Charity, poached from the Hay Loft to be a Godsend to Alf and a wonderful sidekick to the Inn's ghostly 'Cleanup Crew', as new manageress at the Wonky Inn .

Set at the Hay Loft's Psychic and Holistic Fayre, Alf undergoes a literal transformation to go undercover, with the help of Millicent, (a local witch/member of the Daemonne family) and George, who is also in disguise, (though more temporary than Alf's 'Fenella' persona) on hand to save her when she nearly suffers the fate of her ancestors at one point.

A 5-star winner for Jeannie Wycherley and another great adventure for the owner of the Wonky Inn...don't miss it!

S C R E A M! Scream, scream, scream!

The biggest cliffhanger EVER! Alf goes undercover at the Psychic and Holistic Fayre being held at the Hay Loft, the other Inn in the village. She is investigating the Mori at the behest of Wizard Shadowmender. DS Gilchrist, George, is also undercover but won’t say why. We meet some more very interesting characters and the Mori seem to be one step ahead all the time.
All that I’m going to say is that I couldn’t believe it when it just ended! A lot happened BUT..... now I’m just SO glad that I started reading this series when there were already so many books written! At least I don’t have to wait! Just be like a Boy Scout and BE PREPARED!😁

Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot #4 - I can't get enough of this series. I enjoy the characters and their functions throughout the series. This one has almost everyone undercover. Another well thought out addition full of intrigue and suspense, and humor. The storylines are developing and there's definitely bad news ahead. This book is darker than the previous ones and Alf gets to experience what witches suffered through centuries past. I didn't care for the ending; of course for the main reason (read the book) and Alf's attitude was nonchalant concerning that reason. I did enjoy Mama Henri, a voodoo queen from NOLA. 4*

The Wonkiest Witch: Wonky Inn Book #1 - This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the story. As I became wrapped up in the pages, I started enjoying the storylines and the characters and wondering how much witch Alf would become. Since I've been reading about witches a lot lately, I get bored when I come across another witch refusing to be herself. Why deny what you are; do you give yourself a lobotomy if you're intelligent and want to dumb down to normal? One of my role models, as a kid, was Samantha Stevens, she remained true to herself, and an independent woman, regardless of her silly husband's demands; unlike Jeannie, a beautiful, two-legged Labrador (eager to please her master).

Ms. Wycherley's writing style is conversational and casual. The likable and interesting characters are developing at a good rate and will probably gain more depth as the series continues. The storylines do a good job setting the foundation from which the series will build. Once the intros are made there's plenty of intrigue and suspense. A fire opens a can of troubles bringing the witch in Alf to full acceptance. A unique use of ghosts, which I've never read. I'm curious about the rest of the stories. I found this author on and her book through Booksprout. 4*

The Ghosts of Wonky Inn #2 - As much as I liked the first book, I loved this one. I absolutely love the ghosts and what they can actually do. This is one of the things I love about this series; plus the fact that the witch uses magic instead of denying who she is. The variety of ghostly characters are great. I couldn't put the book down, I was so immersed in the fast paced, funny and intriguing storylines. The characters range in personalities, eras and locations, lending the story depth and substance. I wish all the books of the series had already been published so I could chain read them. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Weird Wedding At Wonky Inn #3 - The additions to this series just keep getting better. Another hard to put down story. I love some of the guest characters; especially when she hit him (read the story), although why use blackmail in this case? Alf mixes a party with a vampire wedding and wonders what else is going to happen; lots do happen. Great-grandmother brings her share to the table and then splits, leaving a spot of bother. George is great with his acceptance of the vamps since he didn't get on board quickly about Alf being a witch previously; what trust is that. The past is over for Alf as she finds the Mori is still about. Oh, speaking of the past, how about crazed villagers and a burning (read the story). That's all the spoilers I've giving out. There's more but I want you to enjoy the book like I did, without a book report. I contacted the author about reviewing her books and received this through Booksprout. 4*

The Witch Who Killed Christmas - If you at all can, read the other books first, there's spoilers. Another well written, entertaining story that starts around Christmas, just months later after Wonkiest ended. While not as intriguing as Wonkiest, there was a difficult problem to solve. The cast of interesting characters are still around. The writing style is still casual with humor and drama dispersed throughout the story, this is a quickly read novella. I definitely want to read the rest of the stories. I found this book on Booksprout. 4*

The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise #5 - I absolutely love this series. You never know what to expect from Ms. Wycherley and her crew. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, there's a twist and you're off again working it out. The characters grow on you and the ghosts are a big part of the enjoyment. Yes, there's some darkness in this story; you've the good vs. the bad, plus a lot more in the storylines. There's a new ghost and he's great; I enjoyed what he and another ghost did to help Alf. With George, you know he's going to be found sooner or later, but what else is found and the result is hilarious. Alf is still my type of witch and she keeps kickin' it. Read these books sequentially, it is worth the time invested. A good, clean story full of interesting characters of all sorts and well thought out storylines with twists you just don't see coming sometimes.5*

The Mysterious Mr Wylie #6 – Entertaining and intriguing. Good storylines continued and new make this an interesting series. The past and the present come together with a bit of time travel to 1983, not a time I would have picked. The pace is fast and the characters, old and new, along with the humor help keep the reader immersed in the pages. It is great to see D back and he adds a bit of sexual tension to mix; good banter between him and A. 4*

The Great Witchy Cake Off #7 – There is a whole lot of intrigue with the murder, and pas and possible new love interest. I was happy with all the baking and not one bite available for me to sample, which is so sad since all the desserts sounded worthwhile to indulge with a cuppa. Again, there are good storylines, good characters with appearances from previous books and plenty of additional features in the background making Number 7 a toothy read. After reading so many of this series, it is hard not to get into a book report instead of a review, but I’ll let you discover that for yourself. 4*

Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn #8 - while it started slow for me, I was not in the mood for vampires, the pace picked up and I was immersed in the captivating storylines and good characters. This ended up being a good read. The author's talented blending of old and new storylines, vivid descriptions, I fell in love with Romania again, and her creative creation of characters made this story hard to put down once everything came together. Plenty of intrigue and suspense with touches of humor and romance. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout.

Magic, Murder and a Movie Star, #10 - I laughed myself silly with the names of the Witchywood movie cast. Fun. Entertaining. Good story lines with a seamless blending of the old with the new. The characters are always good in this series; you cannot help but love the regular crew and some of the new ones. Lovely surprise for Alfhind near the end. Well written and well thought out. 5*

Judge, Jury and Jailhouse Rockcakes, #11 - A wonderful story with plenty of humor through out the drama, a good balance. Well written and well thought out, the story lines were interesting and the book was hard to put down. Professor Dodo appears in this story; his interesting story is the first of the Wonderland Detective Agency series. Alf's experience as a Goblin is entertaining while performing a great deal of investigations in record time. 5*

A Midsummer Night’s Wonky, #12 - A lot of serious business going on this time around. There is a heatwave that does not help. 80 degrees F in Germany is almost as bad as 100 deg F in Texas, so imagine 70s in the UK. A whole lot of love is happening, including Manc and Silvan, which creates havoc for C and A. A good story. 4*

Pieces of Hate, #15 - It has been a long time since I read Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn, #8. I worried about missing the several books between Vengeful and Pieces. Silly me, it was like I never left. I still remembered the characters from the previously read stories. Pieces was fun and interesting, and I did not put the book down until the last page. It was enjoyable to return to Wonky Inn, and this story did not disappoint. Wonky Inn is one of my favorite series to get lost in at any time. 5*
Wonky Inn Series End.

Wonderland Detective Agency series.
Dead as a Dodo - I enjoy reading books by this author and this one fits in. There are characters from The Wonky Inn series. Eliseo is a good character along with the rest of the cast. Interesting. Fun. Good story lines. Better than a Cozy mystery. 4*

Whittlecombe is the midst of preparing for a Psychic and Holistic Convention. Alf isn;t too keen on the faire because she realizes alot of the psychics are fakes and take advantage of those who want a connection to a relative who;s passed. Unfortunately Alf is also under seige...she;s been receiving threatening letters. The last one just about guarantees her death on her birthday. She doesn;t want to take it to her beau, DS George Gilchrist. When she finds out that she is being barred from the faire because she;s a trouble maker, she discovers that George will be away for several weeks and won;t or can;t say why not. She;s called to Shadowmender;s in London and while there a discovery that could well be the Mori is revealed which also seems to involve Lyle Cavendish receiving quite a sum of money on the first for a few months. Now it;s up to Alf to find out what his relationship is to the Mori. So leaving the inn in control of her grandmama and Charity, disguised as a Romany gypsy named Fabulous Fenella the Far-Sighted. She ventures to in a real wagon with horse she is now at the faire to ply her trade and try to find information on Lyle, the Mori, and Astutus, a financial institution that seems to have suddenly disappeared when Shadowmender investigates it. Then to put in a wrench, she spots her George who;s gone undercover also to try to find a gang dealing in dangerous items and trespassing on another gang;s territory. The scene is set, Alf and George are set and as Homes would say--the game;s afoot!
Fantastic story that will keep you enthralled as you catch up with Alf and all her shenanigans.

I am really loving this series. I get more attached to all of these wonderful characters with each new book in the series! With Book 4 of the Wonky Inn Series, Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot, author Jeannie Wycherly takes to a slightly different venue. In this book, we spend a lot of time AWAY from the Wonky Inn. The other local Inn, The Hay Loft, is hosting a festival of sorts, featuring psychics and shamans and spiritualists. At first, our heroine, Alf, turns up her nose at the festival, assuming it will be populated with charlatans. But when signs begin to grow stronger that the Mori (the bad guys) may have returned, she finds she need to put on her detective hat and participate in the festival after all. In an unexpected way. As with all the Wonky Inn books, there's a lot of humor and sass in this book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. There is some romance as well, which I am a BIG fan of. Most of these end neatly and are stand alones...this one ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. The main storyline is resolved, but there's a new "gotcha" near the end that has me wanting to knock on the author's door every night until I get a (hopefully) satisfactory resolution. These are clever books, with a clearly British sensibility, and I really recommend them.

The world of the Wonky Inn keeps growing, with new friends, enemies and adventures.

This is book four of the series and things keep getting better and better. The book can be enjoyed as a standalone. You will be a little overwhelmed by all the zany characters at first, but you will catch on to all the essentials quickly enough to enjoy the story. That said, after reading this one, you will probably want to go back and fill in the gaps, so just keep that in mind.

I was so happy to return to the Wonky Inn for yet another adventure. As with all the previous stories, it was very well written, with an interesting plot and lots of bizarre characters. The plot has plenty of twists and turns which keep things moving along, but the real star as usual are the characters. They are just plain fun and provide enough humor to keep things from getting too heavy.

Once again, a wonderful story which will draw you in and keep you engaged right up to the end. Be sure to set aside plenty of time to read as you won't want to put it down.

Highly recommended.

Loved the story but really hate cliffhangers!

Awesome read but why, oh why did it have to end on a cliffhanger. Really hate it when that happens! A wonderful plot full of magic and suspense and the characters are really pulling you into the story. But it ended on a cliffhanger and have to wait for the next one.
She has been barred from the local Fayre but due to a magical makeover she is still able to attend. News has come in that something fishy is going on and that her biggest rival is in league with the bad guys. Proof however is in short supply. Her disguise as a gypsy is so good that she doesn't even feel like herself and when she spots George (who has told her he is going to be away for a while) in his disguise it takes time to convince him that she is Alf. A heartattack, a burnt out food van, assaults and warnings from the other psychics at the fayre ramp up her nerves. Especially with the death threats she has been receiving. Can she and George get out before they become victims. Is the Mori attempting to take over the village?

Wow, you need a scorecard to keep up with all the activity in this book! The action never stops!

Alfhild Daemonne, the quirky witch owner of the Wonky Inn, battles against pure evil in this Book 4. Since Alf has been banned from attending a local Fayre hosted by a neighboring inn – attended by fortune tellers, mediums, diviners, psychics, rune-tellers, witch doctors, and even a voodoo priestess from New Orleans -- and with rumors of dark magic being suspected, Wizard Shadowmender asks her to go undercover to find out what is going on. Indeed, it appears that dark forces are definitely gathering in Whittlecombe! People are in danger and bad things are happening. Even Alf may not be able to protect everyone.

Great writing, great characters, escalating story line! Don’t miss this latest book in the series! It’s getting more exciting than ever before and you won’t want to be left behind!

Whittle Inn owner and witch Alf has been banned from the Psychic and Holistic Fayre sponsored by a rival inn owner, however, this doesn’t stop her from attending. Wizard Shadowmender needs her to go undercover to find out about the dark forces (Mori) that are gathering in the town of Whittlecombe.

There is a lot going on in this the fourth book in the series. It is much darker than the previous books as Alf experiences some of which past witches were faced in history and it has a cliff hanger for an ending (which right now I am not liking). I am hoping book five ends on a very happy note for our heroine and her honey George.

With that all said, I love the writing style and how the author is able to mix a bit of reality in with the paranormal fiction. The characters have great dimension and I love how Alf, Charity, and her ghostly friends interact with each other to form a loving “family”.

Can you imagine an event in your area that is in your bailiwick , but you are told you cannot go to it. However, there is a way undercover, with a really good disguise, but it is like a spy mission.

That is this story in the latest of the Wonky Inn series. Love it but have to say GRRRR for the ending, lol. Where is the next book so I can stop GRRRRing, lol.

This book can be read by itself but some of the finer details from previous books will be missed. I know I forgot about the man with comment regarding the old treatment of witches. I have a feeling that I should know what Alf is struggling with but I cannot bring it to mind either. The clues are there but missing them. The Mori are (screeching).

BTW: Happy Birthday Alf.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

The Fayre is coming to town, and Fred is banned from going. Shadowmaster asks Fred to set up a booth in disguise as a fortune teller, to see what she can find out about the Mori and their connections to the town. Fred does as he asks and notices strange sightings and happenings. This was a very good book, I was surprised to find George was also at the Fayre doing his own investigation. Fred recognizes him right off the bat even though he is also in disguise, Fred's disguise is so good he doesn't know who she is. This book was different from the others in that it does not take place at the Inn but it all ties together with the story. If you like paranormal, mystery, romance all in one book, then this series is for you.

Great read

This is the fourth book I have read in this series, and it is getting more intriguing as time goes on. Alf is now set up in the wonky inn and it’s running well with Charity her hotel manager and the ghosts undertaking the general running and catering. The guests a varying mob of paranormals.
The fair comes to town with psychics galore, big wheels and fabulous food, but once again the spinning red and gold orbs cause chaos as Alf goes undercover. Who can she trust? People are not all what they seem and it’s coming up to Alf’s Birthday will she stay safe and manage to keep her friends and family safe, or will misfortune come to town along with the fair?
You will have to read to find out, but start at book 1, you won’t be disappointed if you enjoy paranormal mysteries.

I did read this as a stand alone novel but am enjoying this series so much I have to catch up on the few books I have missed, A Psychic Fayre is coming to Whittlecombe. This is surprising as the humans still do not seem to accept magick as real. Alf's Wonky Inn has been doing well and although there is another hotel in the small community, she does not see her clientele ass a threat to any other business. Alf is shocked when she is expressly FORBIDDEN from attending the fayre. She is also disappointed when her beau, George, will be away for her birthday. A chance to do some "under cover" work, which seems very important in the fight against The Mori, will be a distraction she needs.
Exciting and dangerous and a whole lot of fun, this book had me wanting to stay deep within the story until the lat page was turned. And WOW- what an impact!

I can't wait to see what happens next.

Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot is everything I hoped for and more! Jeannie Wycherley continues to enchant with her unique blend of spooky whimsy and heartfelt storytelling. The characters are as quirky and lovable as ever, and the plot is packed with surprises, laughter, and just the right touch of the supernatural.

Kim Bretton’s narration is pure perfection—her voice work brings the Wonky Inn and its eccentric residents to life in the most delightful way. She captures every nuance, making the listening experience feel like a cozy fireside chat with a magical twist.

This series just keeps getting better. If you’re a fan of paranormal cozies with charm, mystery, and a whole lot of heart, don’t miss this one!

dark cozy ?

Yet another brilliantly written story in this series that is full of fun, adventure and love along with a huge helping of danger and this time sadness and fear .
A much darker story than the earlier ones as yet again the quirky owner of the wonky inn battles against evil and tries to find the good in every situation Lots of disasters and accidents that are not so accidental. Death threats and mysterious fires along with disappearing people . The end is not the happy success that we are used to as Alf reaches the peak of happiness and the depths of despair at the same time.

"A Stunning and Adorable Paranormal Romance series"
Each story has been fun to read! The storylines and characters are awesome. They will keep you glued to their pages.
Alf is a spunky and sassy young witch. She owns and runs the Whittle Inn aka the Wonky Inn. The Inn is very unique as most of the staff are ghosts. Alf's boyfriend is the local police detective.
Ever since Alf inherited the Inn she has been receiving threatening letters. She has also been battling an evil group called the Mori. Alf and her friends stopped the Moro once. But could they be back?
You will love this super exciting, charming, funny, thrilling, adorable paranormal mystery romance series. This is a five star plus story and series.

after being banned from a local psychic fair, Alf is asked by Wizard Shadowmender to go undercover. There are rumor of dark magic starting to grow in that area.

she is lucky to spend some time with friends and family amid all the ruckus, and lucky to save at least one man who gets caught in the crossfire. sadly, not all who are in peril will remain unscathed

she may be able to call on her powers to save herself, but that will not likely be enough to protect all that is important to her.

edge of your seat adventure, that leads to the expectation that more that is awful is yet to come.

This is the fourth book of Alf, a witch who owns an inn and a few houses she rents out. Having been forced in the past (books) to fight crime and prejudice, she is surprised when her nemesis, the owner of the other inn in town, arranges for a psychic fair. He bans Alf and her friends from the fair, but they have their own ways to get access and find out what is going on.
The story brings us the usual mystery, a threat to Alf's life and the story ends in a cliff hanger. The next book is a must, if you care about Alf and her friends.

Alf has taken on an undercover job for Wizard Shadowmender as Fanella the Fabulous at a local psychic fair. She’s to gather information about the evil wizards, the Mori. The fair is busy and Alf actually tells a lot of fortunes and does find proof of the Mori’s presence. Events turn dark and dangerous and Alf heads back to her inn but things go horribly wrong. Alf is a wonderful character who I would love to be friends with and the Wonky Inn is a fantastic place with a great cast of people (living and dead) working there. FABULOUS FENNELLA FINAGLES THE FAIR while the home-bound ghosts run the Wonky Inn and wouldn't that just be a hoot if you humans went to stay there ( apparently you are very welcome ) and you were served food, room serviced and the vacuuming done by an invisible person, OH to be a fly on the wall to see all that!!
Amongst all the high jinks though there is trouble a foot for Alf has a job to do and let me tell you all does NOT go so smoothly.
Bit shocked at that one! Especially loved the good deeds she does the customers...can not say much more so not to ruin the story for you. Narration was brilliant as usual by Kim Bretton

Audiobook: I was as entertained by this book as much as the first three in the series. I was amused by the idea that Alf was banned from the fayre, but I wondered who could keep as talented a witch as Alf away from any place she wanted to go. I enjoyed the whole magical process which was used to disguise Alf. My attention was captured by the unfolding events. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I enjoyed Kim Bretton's narration as she provided different voices for the various characters. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

4 stars instead of 5 as this story ends in a cliff hanger.

Audiobook review: The narration is very good, easy listening.

Story review:
I enjoyed the story especially the main character Alf. Alf is a witch and a ghost whisperer. There is an evil group trying to take over Alf's land, her inn, and control the nearby village. I love the ghosts in the story. In this story, Alf goes on an undercover mission at a psychic fair when things go really wrong.

The story flows well and is an easy read, very entertaining. I'm looking forward to book 5.

Alf needs to get into the psychic Fayre that The Hay Loft is hosting to hopefully get answers about the Mori, unfortunately for her she has been barred from it by Lyle. This then leads to Alf hiding in plain sight with a little help of magic, meeting new mysterious people, learning more about the history of Whittlecombe and finding out more about the Mori. There is a lot more action, twists and the ending... wow when is the next book out!

I have had the opportunity of reading each book of this series so far and each one before this one has been wonderful. This one was just as excellent with a great cover a fun title and a fantastic story. Now Alf is banned from the largest ever Psychic and Holistic Convention what is a witch suppose to do? Never fear there is an answer. I love the characters from humans to otherworldly the mix is out of sight. If you like those books that are just a little wonky (sic) you really should read this one. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

As I finish 1 installment of the wonky inn series, I eagerly wait for the next. Alf & her gang have made a place in my heart for all time.

This book has also left me wanting for more. Book 4 happens to be a big bundle of magic and adventures. We read more about different types of magic and meet people with different spiritual powers.

The end of the book came as a total surprise. I was so not expecting it. Beware readers the book ends at a cliffhanger.

A psychic and holistic convention is coming to town and Alfhild Daemonne is going undercover as a fortune teller to investigate sightings of The Mori. Most of the action takes place around at the fairgrounds so we don’t see much of the Wonky Inn staff and residents. This story was very suspenseful and left me with a visceral sense of dread. I must get to the next book immediately. The narrative was fantastic and the performance definitely added to the feeling of unease that was integral in the story.
