Abigail

Rate this book
Since the death of her mother, Abigail Blakeslee has lost any desire to become a debutante and enter Society. But now, foregoing her first Season has brought an unwanted invitation to join her aunt and cousins for a summer at Timpton House, the large estate of the Stanton family.  Reluctantly accepting, Abigail is thrust into the vexing world of social propriety and matchmaking she had hoped to avoid. More vexing still is her cousin’s suitor, the young Timpton heir—Edwin Stanton. Moody and distant at times, remarkably endearing at others, Edwin seems a puzzle she can never solve, but can never quite put away. But then, Abigail has her own secret to hide—her own mystery to conceal. Perhaps such puzzles are better left unsolved, or perhaps love can find a solution.  Mild, Sweet/Clean

Kindle freebie Regency romance, of the sweet and clean variety. If you’re a fan of Edenbrooke and ingenue heroines, give this one a try.

3.5 stars. I do think it borrows too many plot concepts from Edenbrooke (which this author read and rated 5 stars). You have a young, goodhearted heroine whose mother has died, sent off on a lengthy visit to someone else's home, where she meets an attractive man who (it's clear to everyone but the heroine) is very interested in her, but she's determined not to return the interest because a beautiful and more confident relative of hers (a cousin in this case) has prior dibs on him ... you get the idea. The main differences are that the hero here is harder to warm up to than Phillip in Edenbrooke (I think he's intended to have a bit more of the stand-offish Darcy vibe to him) and Abigail, the heroine, is carrying a deep, dark secret that she doesn't want anyone to know. There's also a fun character in the form of the hero's married sister, who connives and jumps through all sorts of hoops to try to get her brother together with Abigail.

Even if it's derivative, it was charming reading for a light, sweet Regency romance. Recommended only to those who love this genre and aren't too hardcore about period accuracy. It's self-published and I caught a few grammatical errors (example: "Though her and Mother were sisters ..." Yes, I am a grammar stickler), but overall the writing quality was pretty good.

And I'm happy to report there was no twirling.

Despite this being a debut author the author doesn't write like she is. This book has a lot of substance. A lot of regencies in my opinion have a lot of fluff and eye lash fluttering and flirting over fans. The heroine here, Abigail is not afraid to state her opinion on things and tell Edwin Stanton exactly how she feels about things. After her mother's death Abigail is sent to Timpton House, the estate of the Stanton family. She didn't attend her first season in London so she'll be eased into society by being taught the social niceties by her family there. In this sweet, clean romance I really loved seeing the interaction between her and Edwin Stanton. Her cousin, snippy that she is has her cap set on Edwin. Titles and money are very important to the members of the Timpton House party, more important than true love. Which is sad to see. There is a lot going on but not too much that it was hard to keep track of and it definitely leads me to believe a sequel will follow as many of the characters could do well with their own story. I eagerly look forward to more books by this debut author. If you enjoyed Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, then this is just the book for you.

Ooh, I really enjoyed this story! It definitely had a Pride and Prejudice sort of feel for me with the brooding hero, the passionate and intelligent heroine and plenty of misunderstand and judgements on both sides.

Abigail is so easy to love. Honestly, she is kind, compassionate and freely herself even when it goes against what is "proper". She is a defender of people and exceptionally loyal. See? What's not to love?

I love how this story unfolded. Insight came little by little as I came to know the characters more and more. It was perfect. By the end I really felt like a movie had just played out in my mind and in my heart. The build up to the romantic, sigh worthy ending was fantastic. I'm sighing just thinking about it!

Content: mention of abuse, kissing

- I read a complimentary copy but have since picked up my own copy.

I love a delicious story full of conflicting personalities, hidden secrets, and a budding romance, and this one is just that. Abigail has had a hard life and this new situation that she's almost unwillingly thrust into is a challenge. It's refreshing for the times to see her hold true to herself and not to lose herself in the expectations of society.

Abigail is such a darling protagonist and has no qualms about helping those around her, especially the Bragg family is who struggling and down on their luck. I adored her and her selfless, sweet, and strong personality. Edwin is an enigma, but he quickly grew on me and I found myself eagerly anticipating their interactions, especially as he often found Abigail in compromising predicaments.

I loved the little triangles of relationships that emerged and really enjoyed the twists that popped up, completely taking me by surprise. I'm quite surprised that Heileman is a debut author, as I found this to be a very entertaining and engaging story. My emotions and attention were held hostage for several hours and I'm looking forward to more stories by this author!

Content: mild descriptions of violence; mild romance; very mild religion

I love when a cover catches my eye. This was one of those covers. I couldn’t look away and was instantly drawn into the thought that I wanted to know what the book was about. The saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” isn’t true in this instance. Totally judge this book by its cover because it’s a gorgeous book outside and inside the pages. It was a book that I highly recommend you don’t start reading unless you have plenty of time to read without having to set the book down. Because believe me, you won’t want to set it down. You’ll be saying to yourself, “just one more page…one more chapter…ahhh, I’ve already read 5 and I need to get such and such done.” I know you all know what I’m talking about because you’ve read books like that. Well, I’m just giving you your heads up warning now that this is one of those books.

When I read digital books, I love to highlight passages. Anyone else out there a highlighter too? Even in print copies I write and mark up my books if I absolutely love something in it. Not like extreme mark up in my print copies but if it’s something that absolutely touches me, I’ll make a note. In educational books, oh heavens, there’s notes EVERYWHERE! But this copy of mine, I would start to highlight something only to find that I’d highlighted the whole scene (sometimes the whole chapter). *blushes and shrugs* Seriously, I need a shelf on my Goodreads account that I call, “Highlighted the whole book.” I have a handful that that has happened to. And this one made that list. Absolutely loved it!

If someone were to have had me read the book then tell me afterwards that this was a debut novel, I never would have believed them. Jess Heileman did such an amazing job with all the different aspects of this book that I truly felt as if she had published many books and had honed her craft. Such a gift for sure! The characters were so well developed. I loved the descriptions and feelings she was able to convey throughout the book. I felt like I was there in the story and completely immersed and invested in the outcomes.

I had several moments where I ached for Abigail. I might have possibly even shed some tears. I cried, I laughed, I cheered for her, I ached for her, I was beyond thrilled to see how her story came full circle. There was heartache, deceit, pure love, friendship, caring, lies, family, forgiving, healing, secrets, promises, peace, sorrow, nature, sickness, fashion, walks, portraits, eavesdropping, sweet reunion, farewells, rain, bushes, witty banter, machinations, long stares, blindness, children, hesitation, early mornings, and of course love.

There are probably plenty more descriptive words that I could add to that list. But I think it is a pretty good list showing what all awaits you within this novel. One of my favorites would be rain. You’ll have to read to find out. If you’ve already read it, do you remember? Oh my!

I thought about sharing a couple quotes that I loved but then I have that problem of having the whole scene highlighted. Hee Hee! *shrugs* So I don’t think that the author would want me to type up each scene to share with you a “quote,” nor do I think Goodreads allows enough space for that in a review. Bummer, I had a couple good ones for you. So to remedy my not being able to share those with you, I have a perfect solution. Go get a copy, and enjoy the journey that Abigail goes on in this beautiful story. I honestly don’t think you’ll regret it. If you’re a Regency fan, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I promise you’ll love it! It’s really that wonderful! I read it a couple weeks ago and I have honestly thought about it a lot since then. I wanted to turn around and read it again right away. Another book that I know my teenage daughters are going to love! I can’t wait for them to read it so I can watch their reactions throughout the book then be able to talk about it with them. So excited!

I didn’t really talk much about Abigail’s love interest. I honestly didn’t want to give away anything about who it is. Nor do I want to give any spoilers. And knowing how much I loved each interaction with these two, I would start telling you about this scene and that scene and then we’re back to the whole problem of me wanting to share the whole highlighted book with you. I think it’s much better if you go read the actual thing and not my ramblings.

Content: Clean. Some flashbacks of childhood trauma. Sicknesses and death. A couple sweet kisses but nothing more. I recommend for YA and up. All ages will love this one!

I received a copy from the author but have since purchased my own. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

😍😍😍 You guys. This book. I loved it so much! Like, I think I'm going to have to buy the paperback and put it on my shelf of faves right beside Edenbrooke and Blackmoore. I adored every little second of it. It's everything I love in a good regency...and actually, it's more. There's a layer of the plot that includes the heroine (following the example of her parents) caring for a disadvantaged family and I just love the conversations in the book that come from that. (I work for a nonprofit that cares for people in need...so that piece of the plot endeared the story to me all the more.)

My only complaint: This is the author's first book...so there's no backlist for me to devour! Haha! But seriously...I need another book from this author. Preferably, Laurence's story. :)

I love when the female characters go against "the proper ways" of the time and Abigail Blakeslee (Abee) does that quite a bit. When Abigail's mother died she was allowed to skip having a Season that year, but now she finds herself at a houseparty at Timpton House to kind of ease her into society so she'll be prepared for her Season, but Abigail doesn't want a Season at all. She's not the flirty, bat-your-eyelashes, looking-for-anyone-with-a-title kind of young lady. She's the kind of young woman who speaks her mind, cares for those who need help--no matter their station in life--and puts others before herself.

Edwin Stanton, the heir to Timpton House, finds himself in a triangle with two young women who couldn't be more different--Abigail and her snooty, self-aware cousin, Helena. Edwin's behavior confuses Abigail because he sometimes seems as if he's two different people. What could've happened to make him so distant?

I really got into this story. I could tell Edwin and Abigail would be attracted to each other by the way sparks were flying at their first meeting when she speaks her mind to the standoffish Edwin. I loved how Abigail interacted with Uncle Stanton who had lost his sight and how she jumped right in and took care of the Bragg family who were going through a very difficult time. I liked how Edwin was when they spent time together.

There's a lot going on in the story--there are several matchmaking attempts going on, secrets that have been hidden for years are found out and there are a couple of twists and turns I didn't expect at all. I really liked Edwin's sister, Diana and Uncle Stanton.

I can't believe this book is by a debut author. I look forward to reading more from her. I offered to read this book as it's a debut author but I enjoyed it so much I ending up buying it.

This was a wonderful escape into the world of Regency England! I enjoyed Abigail and her somewhat unconventional attitude, and found it interesting who she chose to placate and who she felt she needed to be disrespectful to. She and Edwin definitely have a Darcy/Lizzie thing going, and it was fun seeing their interest and attraction despite their best efforts. I especially liked the parts where they get away from the house and are able to discover the deeper layers behind each of their facades. There are family secrets that are alluded to but also unexpected and bring quite the twist to the story.

What would otherwise be a cute HR is eclipsed and cast into suckdom by the jagweed hero it houses
description
Edwin? More like Edlose!

Man, reading this a month after falling in love with Jess Heileman and her wit in crafting 'The Nabob's Daughter,' is jarring. Not that this book was so terrible, it was simply very 'middle of the road' with the so called 'love story' being the roadkill lying in the middle of the middle of the road. The writing again is fine, the dialogue has it's moments but the couple- chiefly Edwin- and their lame romance... let's just say I wasn't too keen on them.
description
It is going for that 'Pride and Prejudice,' she thinks he hates her and has no interest in her, and it does indeed appear as such, but its actually quite the opposite. He has a funny way of showing it as he is actively courting another lady- her cousin!- and expectations for the announcement of their engagement could be any day. Despite his mercurial behavior, all along he loves the heroine ardently, everyone in his family knows it and like Abigail better for him and cruelly keep confusing poor Abigail with all this innuendo, and honestly it bordered on her being the butt of an inside joke.

The poor dear was so gaslit between Edwin being one moment overly attentive and sweet and the next flirting with her cousin he is courting and ignoring Abigail, and his sister pushing them together at every turn, while her conniving Aunt tries to keep them apart- ugh she was being tugged and pushed every which way; I was indignant on her behalf.
description
I couldn't like, respect, or root for Edwin. He kept kindling affection in Abigail's heart with his paradoxical behavior, and just when he felt her attention was not on him, and once it was he would go and flirt with her cousin. This guy straight up sucks!
Me to Edwin:
description
Abigail deserved better! I was rooting for her to ditch the flip flopping scrub and fall in love with the young doctor, or just straight up leave his estate.
description
She's a pretty heiress with a charitable heart, she can marry where she wants and who she wants, I'm sure worthy gentlemen would line up at the door despite her secret. I was also hopping she or someone would finally give her harridan aunt her just desserts but alas that course never came.

Also the end felt a bit disjointed, the plot was just throwing in so many random stuff, especially that bit with Edwin's step mom was redonk and unnecessary. Not to mention the stupid reason Edwin gave for his crappy behavior, it was so damned cliche!

The only aspect of the story I liked was Abigail's repartee with the blind, charming uncle. He was the only valid one. All in all, I would still not hesitate to pick up another Heileman novel. Nabob's Daughter is one my favorite HR's ever and it would take more than one mediocre love story from her pen to sink her in my esteem.

5+ Stars!!

I finished this book in one day- I’m still reeling and picking it up to re-read favorite parts. This is without a doubt one of the best regency romances I have read in quite some time! It’s still hard to believe this is the author’s first novel- I hope she continues to write more because this book is a gift.

The protagonist, Abigail, had me rooting for her from the start. She is kind, witty, independent, smart, and not afraid to stand up for her beliefs. I loved seeing her grow and blossom throughout the story. There was so much more to her than first meets the eye, and I loved reading from her perspective.

Don’t get me started on Edwin- he was such a perfect hero, with his own faults, misunderstandings, handsome-but-rare-smiles, and a deeply rooted kindness. His interactions with Abigail were my favorite! So much romantic tension had my toes curling and reading long into the night.

This was an incredible regency novel, with endearing supporting characters, a unique and heartfelt story, and a clean yet swoon-worthy romance. I can’t wait to see what the author writes next!!!!!

This was an excellent debut novel for Jess Heileman. I loved the story and the characters!

Abigail is a young woman who suffers from anxiety. She is full of spunk and humor when one gets to know her. A difficult past was alluded to several times in the book and it was rewarding when all of the secrets came to light. All of the little pieces of the puzzle came together quite nicely.

The book has characters that I loved and some that I disliked. It was the perfect house party. (I'm chuckling to myself right now.) The character of Edwin Stanton was complicated. I wasn't sure how I felt about him at first. Fortunately, he grew on me as the story progressed.

This is a great escape read. It was one where I really wanted the characters to find their happily-ever-after. This book is clean with kissing.

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This was a fun regency, it took me a bit to get into, but then I quickly found myself immersed in the story and characters. There is a bit of a mystery surrounding Abigail that slowly unfolds as the story progresses. She is an easy character to like, she tries to make those around her happy, but also speaks her mind. The romance was sweet, a bit on the forbidden-love side since Edwin is almost engaged to Abigails cousin. I thought this was well-written and kept me engaged. I hope Abigails brother gets a story one day as well.

Content: Clean romance, kisses.

Abigail was such a charming story, both beautifully written and well crafted. The plot was engaging and all the characters were well developed. I especially adored the first-person narration told from Abigail’s perspective. She was a darling protagonist and her love interest, Edwin, brooding and mysterious.

At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about their ‘Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy’ relationship, but their interactions were adorable and the development of their romance was wonderfully portrayed. I enjoyed watching them initially try to resist their attraction for one another, only for their feelings to deepen despite their efforts. They were a perfect match.

I enjoyed how there were many aspects of the story that supplemented the lovely romance, particularly in regard to Abigail's character. I guessed her secret quite early in the story but knowing it didn't hinder my enjoyment, and there were still some surprises in how it was all resolved. It unfolded at a lovely pace and never once did I want to put the book down. Even after I’ve finished, I find myself thinking about the story and want to return to immerse myself back in its pages for a reread.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Abigail—the plot, the well-developed characters, the lovely writing style, and adorable romance. I'm eager to see what Jess Heileman writes next.

A regal regency read

I'll give you peek at some of the numerous notes in my Kindle edition of this book to help you understand what you're in for. "So true" was noted first, followed by several "hahaha" peppered with "touché" and "so witty." My favorites were "swoon" or "be still my heart."
I enjoyed the first person perspective throughout. I really liked the instances where I felt like I knew more than Abigail about what was going on!
The characters had depth and were not only relatable, but engaging as well. I loved some. I disliked some. Yet, they all stuck with me.
On a steaminess level I would rate this a hot PG. It had all the build up and feelings without the uncomfortable blushing descriptions too many other authors use.
This is an excellent book and is definitely worthy of a repeat read!

With a 4.48 rating on goodreads I was looking forward to reading this one and hoping for another Edenbrooke.
Edenbrooke it was not.
There’s a lot wrong with this book.

Firstly- So many americanisms. “I guess” and “write me”. As a Brit i find this very irritating and distracting.
In England we would always say “I suppose” and “write TO me”
I never heard anyone British say “I guess” before about 1990.
Also peach cobbler? To us brits it’s peach crumble.
Secondly- The behaviour of characters and the conversations jump about all over the place and as such can be very confusing.
Thirdly- The heroine, Abigail frequently behaves and speaks in a shocking manner. She was very unlikeable to me. She is referred to as kind and yes, she helps a poor family and nurses another back to health however she has no kindness in her other behaviours and certainly not in the way she speaks to the hero and other characters. She comes across as a bit spiteful and oh so immature.
Lastly- The plot. It started off fine. By the time I got to the end? Ridiculous.

I was tempted to give this one star however I feel two is both fair and reasonable.

Awesome story

Abigail is a beautiful Regency romance by a new to me author. I loved it. My only concern while reading was I wanted to know Edwin, the hero's point of view. Y'all, dont worry, because at the end you get it. And wow what an ending. It was a lovely happily ever after. I only hope this author plans a book about Lydia and Laurence too.

Abigail was one of those books I had a hard time putting down. Jess Heileman pulled me in with her characterization and plot development. Parts of the ending were far from what I expected when I started reading the book.

Abigail Blakeslee has been attempting to avoid her "first season." Her mother died and her father and older brother have struggled somewhat to help Abigail in her societal obligations. Her brother insists their father send her to Timpton House to participate in a society gathering at the invitation of her aunt. Her cousins will attend as well and it is expected that cousin Helene will be announced as the intended of Edwin Stanton - heir of the Timpton House.

Abigail knows she is not like other society young ladies. Her mother instilled in her a desire to help those less fortunate, even when she was the Lady of an estate. While visiting Timpton House she comes in contact with a poor family who has just lost the father and the mother has fallen ill, leaving an eight-year-old boy to care for his 4 younger sisters. Abigail is quick to jump in to help - additional help arrives from an unlikely source.

Edwin is a moody sort of person. Yet, at times, another side of him comes to the surface. His married sister Diana is able to bring out the best in him. She befriends Abigail and becomes a bit of a match-maker even though Abigail insists she is not interested - after all Helene is intent on becoming his intended.

I don't want to share too many details of the story as there are some wonderful surprises sprinkled throughout the book, especially toward the end. I love it when there are surprises in a book that catch me off guard - this book contains that kind of surprise.

Jess Heileman appears to have researched the time period well. Her plot line is very convincing and her characters are realistic. While some of the plot is predictable - it is a romance after all - she included unanticipated plot twists which make the book more compelling to finish. She has been added to my list of favorite authors. I look forward to reading more from her.

I received an advanced e-copy of the book from I Am A Reader in exchange for this honest review.

I quite enjoyed this book. This is the authors only book listed on good reads and I find it remarkable that this could be a first book. I had so many questions come to mind during my reading which eventually all got answered but they weren't all obvious from the start. And while we knew from the start how the romance would end there were some twists and turns in there that I didn't see coming at all. The one solid predictable was that Abigail and Edwin would end up together. All the rest was a fun ride.

I think I was as confused by Edwin's behavior as Abigail often was. He was so hot then cold, sweet then angry all the time and it wasn't obvious to us why. At least not at first. So it is no surprise that Abigail couldn't figure out his true feelings until he spoke them aloud. I always like strong females that don't follow the norm in society and Abigail was definitely one of those.

I loved Diana. So mischievous in her matchmaking and on occasion dragged her husband along for the ride. They were both delightful and charming. I also loved Uncle Stanton. He was also a delight. Aunt Marianne, Helena and Hannah reminded me much of Cinderella's wicked stepmother and stepsisters. The aunt and one cousin were so very unpleasant. The other cousin wasn't unpleasant but pretty much went along with whatever got dished out so she wasn't a lot of help to Abigail either.

It was possibly a little slow in the middle where I thought perhaps there was too much of nothing new happening but it didn't decrease my enjoyment overall.

Unfortunately, this book and I just didn't connect.

I found Abigail to be quite grating, even though it is kind of shoved down your throat how kind, fiery and generally awesome she is. Sure, she helped out a poor family in need. Sure, she liked taking walks in the garden more than she liked needlepoint. But an interesting character this does not make.

Then there was Edwin, who I just didn't warm up to at all. All of his and Abigail's interactions felt stilted, and when the climactic declaration of love happened and his motives for acting so rude (and, well let's be honest, kind of bizarre) are revealed.. I wasn't convinced. We follow his character court another woman the whole story and give the odd smile to the heroine, and are then meant to believe he was falling for her the entire time but he just didn't "believe in love"? Bleh. Nah.

Basically, the setting, storyline and relationship between the two main characters was an attempt at replicating the magic formula that was Edenbrooke, but lacked the charm of Marianne and Phillip. Although I did appreciate the lack of "twirling" lol.

Also, there were just so many exclamations points!!! (a particular pet peeve of mine)

Jess Heileman did a very nice job with her debut novel, Abigail. I'm a sucker for characters that don't fit the mold, and Abigail was just such a character. Her good heart was very endearing, as was her relationship with her father and brother (although most of that is from a distance in this story, we get a very good feel for it). Her loyalty was also notable, especially because it meant sacrificing her own happiness.

I liked the banter between the main characters, and the goodness in many of the characters-caring more about helping others than what society would think.

I'm not sure if I got impatient for the end, but it started to go on a bit long for me. There was a reveal that was soap opera-esque, but it has a happy ending (a must have for me).

Abigail is a clean and enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Loved it! I downloaded this book as soon after it was released. While I was reading it, I kept wondering why I didn’t read it sooner. It was exceptionally good! The story had an element of intrigue, and the romance was wonderful. This was such an enjoyable read, and I can’t wait to see what this new author writes next.

Charming Regency story with some nods to Pride and Prejudice, with some brooding, feisty and witty characters.
