When the time comes for Livingstone Mouse to find a nest of his own, he wants it to be in the best place. I have heard that China is very nice," his mom says. But where is China? Could it be in a noisy cupboard? A smelly old shoe? A picnic basket? Can a small mouse find China all by himself? Livingstone isn't sure, but he is determined to find out.
Pamela Duncan Edwards' endearing story of a mouse with a mission is beautifully brought to life by Henry Cole's lively illustrations. Livingstone is a hero who will captivate and delight his audience.
Pamela Duncan Edwards is a British-born children's author living in the United States. She has written over forty picture books published in both the U.S. and the U.K., known for their playful language and engaging storytelling.
Give it up for a mouse named "Livingstone", an explorer of great renown. This little dude is going places.
When his mother informs her brood that it's time to find their own places, Livingstone decides he must find China. Why? Because his mother told him, China is very nice. So he begins a great journey, one which will take him to cupboards and human shoes and lightposts. He learns that cockroaches are argumentative and rats know a thing or two. Will he find the home he believes is his destiny?
This is a sweet children's story that teaches us to always be hopeful and to look out for the smaller beings in our lives. The story by Pamela Duncan Edwards is not too wordy and the illustrations by Henry Cole are full of hope and adventure. I certainly enjoyed this book and its little hero, too.
I seem to have a penchant for picking up books that centre on mice as characters, and this one is no exception. (I should make a shelf... I keep finding so many!)
This one is a simple picture book, which focuses on our main character trying (and eventually succeeding!) At finding China - a place to build his nest and live out his life. It ends with some clever wordplay that brought a smile to my face when I finished it.
Though the story is simple, the artwork is absolutely gorgeous and makes for a very enjoyable experience!
9 Livingstone Mouse i) Livingstone Mouse tells the story about an explorer mouse named Livingstone. When it was time to leave her mother’s nest, Livingstone went out in search for China, the “greatest place in the world”. He ventures off on his own and finds many places to start his nest in. However, one after the other, the places seem to fall short of Livingstone’s expectations. Doubting that he will ever get to see China, Livingstone decides to look one more time. He comes across a large tea cup lying in the grass. The tea cup looks spacious and roomy for the little mouse. The perfect place for a tiny mouse to start his nest in. When he asks a bat about the place, the bat confirms that it is indeed “Old China”. At last, Livingstone had found his great place and built his nest there. ii) The theme of this story is perseverance and how you should never give up on something that you really want. iii) Star Rating: 5 iv) I really enjoyed this story. This book reminded me of the time when I was trying to decide the “perfect” college. I looked at a bunch of schools, and they were nice, but they didn’t feel like home to me. I was going to settle for a school, but then I ran into TCU. After getting a feel from it and going on a visit, I realized that TCU was the school for me. Like Livingstone, I had found my “Old China”, and I wasn’t going to give up on it. v) I recommend this book because teachers could use it as a tool to teach the vocabulary word ‘perseverance’ to young children. This book is a great example of why should never give up on something. To further this lesson, teachers could have the students come up with a list of things that are hard for them to do, and then they could come up with ways to make the task easier. The book is good for teaching moral lessons, and it is a great book to entertain children.
Oh, my. I had skipped over this beat-up paperback in my library so many times without ever picking it up...until today. I'm so glad I finally did.
When Livingstone Mouse's mother tells her little mice that they have outgrown her small nest and they must find homes of their own, Livingstone sets out to find "the greatest place in the world". His mother says she has heard that China is nice, so Livingstone sets out to find China. Each time he arrives someplace new, he thinks he must be in China, but is always told to look somewhere else. On his way he finds a nest that is too noisy, one that is too smelly, one that seems to have food that is too hot for his tastes, one that almost hurts him, and one that is too bright. Eventually, he finds his own "greatest place" (a clever little place, too) and raises a new family there.
I thought this book was entirely adorable. Livingstone is such a cute little hero. This is now on my list of books to read to Pre-K when they're learning about the senses (along with Jim Averbeck's In a Blue Room). It's a gem.
When it's time to leave the nest and venture out on his own, Livingston decides to move to China, as he's heard it's very nice there. But will he find China? The ending is delightful and sure to surprise!

I would use this book to talk about perseverance. When Livingstone cannot find a house he does not give up he continues to look. Eventually he finds what he was looking for. I think this is an important lesson for students to learn because so many of them get so frustrated when they do not understand something right off the bat. They need to keep trying and eventually they will find what they are looking for.
Oh my gosh! I loved this story! It's about a mouse that wants to live in the greatest place in the world. His mother reply's with what she's heard is the greatest place in the world so Livingstone goes on his adventure in search of it. I couldn't help but smile at the creativity of the greatest place in the world.
A wonderful tale of a mouse who leaves his mother's nest in search of a place to build his own nest. He is an adventurer at heart and has heard that China is the best place to live so he sets out to find China to build his nest. Does he find China? Read the book to find out.
When Livingstone is forced to leave the nest by his mother he goes in earch of what he thinks might be "China". He eventually finds china, but its an old tea pot to be exact, but he thinks it's perfect and thats all that matters!
An "L" book for Collin's learning time. I LOVED this story, and Collin asked me to read it to him at least 50 times. A book that I will purchase in the future.
